Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua vs Mark Coleman UFC 93 fight confirmed Jan. 17

Light heavyweight contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3) will return to the Octagon to rematch Mark Coleman (15-8) in a 205-pound showdown at UFC 93 at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17, 2009.
"The Hammer" defeated Rua in controversial fashion at PRIDE 31 back in 2006 when an awkward landing broke the Brazilian’s arm less than a minute into the fight. It was a bitter "fluke" loss for the 2005 Pride FC Grand Prix Champion and one that he has been out to avenge ever since it happened.
Rua made his debut with the promotion with much fanfare and promise late last year, being billed as the top 205-pound fighter in the world. He then lost his first match via third round submission (rear naked choke) in an action-packed fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: "Knockout" in September 2007.
Griffin went on to challenge for and win the light heavyweight championship. Meanwhile, Rua had surgery to repair a knee injury, which he then re-injured several months later while training for a fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 85: "Bedlam" in June that never happened.
He has not competed since the loss to Griffin. And when he does step inside the Octagon against Coleman he will have been on the sidelines for almost a year and a half.
Coleman — the first-ever UFC heavyweight champion and most recent inductee into the promotion's hall of fame — will return to the Octagon for the first time since 1999. He had a semi-successful run in the Pride FC organization, with the highlight of his work overseas being the champion of the first-ever open weight grand prix in 2000.
Since that time, however, the 43-year-old has compiled an average record (4-4), taking on some of the best competitors in the division such as Fedor Emelianenko (two losses), Mirko Cro Cop (loss) and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira (loss).
Coleman — the "Godfather" of the ground and pound — is a collegiate national wrestling champion for THE Ohio State University and competed in the Olympics in 1992. He was supposed to challenge Brock Lesnar in his return to the promotion in August before his own injury forced him off the card.
UFC 93 features a main event between light heavyweights and former champions Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson. It will air on pay-per-view (PPV) at 10 p.m. ET on fight night.

Should be an easy win for Shogun… I’m surprised to see Hendo at LHW, I thought he was trying to get a rematch with Silva, now Silva better move up too because there is no one at 185 that can challenge him! Plus, that would leave open the MW title for Filho to challenge for since they are babies and won’t fight. All that being said, I cant wait to see Hendo and Rich, GO RICH!!!!!

TKO Round 1 by Shogun by a barrage of blows while The Hammer is desperately trying to take him down!
I hate this matchup and the only reason they are putting this together is cos Shogun wants revenge not only for the loss but for the way Coleman disrespected him after the loss. Crazy stuff for anyone who hasn’t seen it as both camps get in the ring to try and batter each other!

Crazy but hilarious. Good old Wanderlei: “You kick my head in ground!!!”
Wanderlei (motioning to Coleman):
I want you. I want you next!!!
Coleman shits himself.
Rampage (appears from nowhere, looking over Coleman’s shoulder): Who me?….Nahhh….Me. What? You want me!

The only way I can see Coleman standing a chance is by pure brute force and size. Rua should take this provided hes back to full fitness.

What if shogun comes out like GSP did after his loss. What if he’s bigger and meaner. They were both terrorizing their respective divisions before losing to cans. That probly changes your mindest. And Yes forrest was a can at that point who ducked machida for a win-win situation.

The LHW picture is getting complicated. haha. VeraVSjardine, MachidaVSthiago, RichVSHendo and ForrestVSevans. Who fights who after? haha. i hope vera and machida does well. and hopefully forrest beats evans cause im sick of watching evans haha.

Phil, Props to you my friend! I remember you told me about this match up a while back when I told you about the Lesnar vs. Couture fight! Good Stuff! Are they fighting at HW or LHW?
This is a great fight for Shogun. shogun needs a warm up fight but if you ask him, he will tell you that he is ready for the top guys RIGHT NOW! Thats why I LOVE Shogun, He wants no WARM up fights, but the UFC is being very smart by giving him one!

Bro.. I was told when I found out about this match that this fight be HH fight.. When I found out that they were going to fight.. One of my first questions was.. @ LHW or HH..I got HH as a response.

Yeah, Mad props Phil!!
I remember when you posted that…You had said December at HW….Either way you were definitely the first person who put this fight in my mind, and props for that!
It does say in the article the fight is at LHW, and imo- I am glad it is..Shogun doesn’t need to keep the beef. He fights better at 205…And same with Hammer..At his age this fight will be suited at LHW, so he is forced to get in shape…
It is not the best match-up to have Shogun in right now, but I have always wanted him the avenge this loss..So I am fine with it..
Shogun via TKO round 1……..

Actually, I agree w/ Mexi. I think its a crappy match because I see Hendo running through Ace like wet paper. Besides, I think Hendo in the 185 division is much better for us as fans!

Lousy fight. Coleman will lose and no one will care.
I’m still not convinced that Shogun is for real. Shogun looked good in Pride, but it’s been hit and miss with these Pride guys coming to the UFC. Shogun’s fight against Forrest was really disappointing. We’ll see how good of a fighter Shogun can be without the steroids.

it real hasn’t beenhit or miss, the only one who has not suceeded is cro cop, the rest are doing just fine.do you think fighter in the ufc don’t use steroids?and that everyone in pride did?

Hi Hater!!! Agreeing with Mexi on this one. No one wants to see this fight. Free money for Shogun though. Good for him.

i know. im sick of seeing evans win. somebody needs to beat him already! id really hate to see him beat forrest. i think forrest has got this one though. as long as he keeps out of the way of those bombs rashad throws! i think forrest would say that he would wanna fight jardine to get that loss off his mind and beat him. i’d like to see that one again. i dont know if jardine will get past vera though. lots of possibility’s right now for title shots!!!

i’d like to see shogun win too. he better come prepared! coleman is a huge lhw! i’ve got shogun by submission too. i’ll say a prayer for shogun before that fight!!! (and i aint a religious kinda guy)

Another one sided match up involving Coleman. You would think that Dana was trying to kill him by first wanting to put him up against Lesnar and now Shogun.

FIRST PARAGRAPH.
“Light heavyweight contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3) will return to the Octagon to rematch Mark Coleman (15-8) in a 205-pound showdown at UFC 93 at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17, 2009.”
" in a 205-pound showdown at UFC 93 "
“205-pound showdown”
“205-pound”
“205”
Hope that helps.

Yeah im pretty sure he will. sucks, vitors been my favorite fighter 1997. I would rather see Lindland vs Mousasi, I think Lindland might have beat Vitor also. And Vitor Vs Prangly. i think Vitor can handle him.
by belfort_fan on Oct 1, 2008 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Matt “Tylenol PM” Lindland should NEVER fight on pay per view!
I used to be mad that Dana would keep him out of the UFC but now I love Dana for it because I cant stay awake watching him fight anymore
Prediction: MOusasi via submission!
I also heard that Mousasi’s next match up in DREAM might be Akiyama!
by john on Oct 1, 2008 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vitor is in HUGE trouble because Mousasi will train with Fedor for Affliction 2, since Fedor’s manager finklestein also represents Mousasi!
Who better to train with the THE GOD of mma?

yeah shoguns a lhw and coleman is fighting for the first time at lhw.i think he only walks round about 225-230 so shouldnt be much too much of a struggle but age does come into it.im gonna go for a coleman win by dq with shogun forgetting where he is and soccer kicking the hammers head into the crowd!!

I think this is a bad match up and a bad fight for Rua in particular.
If he wins, yes he will settle a score but how much will that improve his stock in the UFC? Not much, if at all, as it looks a mismatch to me. He won’t earn a title shot after this win that’s for sure. People are doubting him after his loss to Griffin. What will a win over Coleman prove? Coleman is now 43 and in the twilight of a distinguished career. In reality, how many problems will he pose a stronger, faster, fitter, younger, more well rounded Rua? Gut feeling is none at all.
But if Rua was to somehow lose, his reputation would be shot to pieces and his credibility as a top 205-pound fighter would be fast on the decline.
So I think it would make more sense to skip what I consider a tune-up fight and put Rua against a more challenging opponent, rather than protecting him in the hope of getting his first UFC victory. This is no disrespect to Coleman but I just can’t see him getting close to Rua.
Mismatches are not what I want to see and this looks like one of them.
by Jourdan on Oct 1, 2008 11:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree. it will give shogun an easy win for american fans to see and achance for coleman to be in the spotlight one last time after going into the hof. i think the ufc is trying to protect their investment in shogun (in contradiction that dana wants all “pride” fighters to lose). cant say that i blame them, but i dont like it either.

yeah onceagain as i keepsaying we get nonsense fights over here
Main event
Franklin v hendo
co main
shogun v coleman WTF!!
How pointless is that, coleman hasnt fought in the octagon in a decade, this is obviously a fight shogun asked for.
When are we gony get a decent card over here that is strong throughout with the likes of chuck liddell, british cards have 1 good match up and the rest generally suck!!!
It pisses me off to be honest, the sport should be promoted over here with strong cards and big names, not that these guys arent big names, but coleman?? and shogun off a bad injury and defeat!! rich v hendo at 205?? once again a pointless match up, but atleast a decent fight!!
There better be another big fight on this card or il be pissed as i want to go to this one!
by mo on Oct 1, 2008 6:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
of coarse its a fight he asked for, he wants to avenge a loss and there was some serious bad blood after that fight… and idk what all the hates about, i’m stoked to see coleman back in the octagon, even if he’s gettin old. gotta be a fan cause of his old “smashing machine” gig, got ta know him and he’s a pretty cool dude (despite some roid rage moments since those days). it’ll be fun watching a modern day contender fight a rematch with a legend… fun fight for me!
and ta say this card isnt even “decent” is a joke… there’s been two fights announced and its 3 of the top fighters in the world and 1 legend….. nasty
by gobrowns on Oct 1, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
coleman may be old but if shogun comes to fight with no gas in the tank like he did against griffin, then coleman may take over the fight
by day1er on Oct 1, 2008 10:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
My point is not that there is not good fighters, my point is that the fights that are scheduled are prob the main events, and I just dont see the UFC putting Main events like this on in the US.
They are nice fights as back up fights, however none of the winners will get a title shot!
There are 5 titles in the ufc,so there is no reason why there should not be a title fight over here, or atleast a title contention fight. Man atleast an attractive card with the ICEMAN would be nice!!!
Instead were gettin a shogun who was shocking in his ufc debut and coming off a terrible injury, and fighting a guy that is closer to 50 than 40 and hasnt fought in the ufc in a decade!
Just look at the main event for the upcoming UK event bisping v leben?? its a good fight, but never a main event!! we just want some big fights over here!!!
by mo on Oct 1, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ha i agree the leben card isnt the flashiest, but 93 is turning out to be a good one. haha and a “title or title contention fight” doesnt go in the same sentance w/ chuck as of now
