Quinton Rampage Jackson vs Wanderlei Silva 3 UFC 92 fight set (not UFC 93)

wandi rampage
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson (28-7) and former Pride FC middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva (32-8-1) will collide at UFC 92 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 27.

The blockbuster light heavyweight match up was first discussed for the UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar"

show on November 15 and then the UFC 93 Super Bowl weekend event on January 31. Those dates did not work out, however, and the bout is now slated to enhance the New Year's Eve weekend mixed martial arts bonanza.

"The Axe Murderer" and "Rampage" of course share quite a bit of history, fighting twice overseas in Japan under the Pride FC banner. Silva was victorious on both occasions and in rather convincing fashion —

the fights ended with brutal knockouts.

Since that time, Jackson has indicated that he was not necessarily competing on a level playing field. He and/or his handlers have hinted at everything from unchecked steroid use to crooked officiating. One thing is for certain —

Jackson is now a much improved fighter who is dedicated to training with partners who can elevate his game.

That was something that he was clearly missing in "The Land of the Rising Sun." And now he gets to prove that with the right approach — and under strict supervision of a regulated sanctioning body —

he can exact revenge once and for all.

Silva’s last appearance was an absolute mauling of "The Dean of Mean" Keith Jardine at UFC 84: "Ill Will" back in May. He definitely looked like the "Axe Murderer" of old with a quick and vicious knockout. For "Rampage,"

this will mark his first fight after his highly publicized run-ins with the law and his subsequent split with long-time trainer, Juanito Ibarra.

He will also look to bounce back from his controversial unanimous decision loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin"

in July, which cost him his 205-pound title.

This is definitely a huge fight that the hardcore fans have been dreaming about —

Silva and Jackson have an epic feud and a real distaste for one another. This should definitely be another instant classic.

UFC 92 features the main event between current coaches of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8, interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and Frank Mir. To check out the latest UFC 92 fight card and rumors click here.

FINALLY!!!!!!!! Dont really care who wins this fight, but I hate to say it because I love Wanderlei…Rampage is going to win!

by john on Sep 27, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pointless fight with the same outcome still. Rampage just needs to accept this fact and move on. Try revenge against shogun, maybe that might work.

by NameNotRequired on Sep 28, 2008 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still don’t think Rampage has got his head back on straight, and I think that Wandy may be the worst fight for him if he is not all there mentally.

by naturalshadow on Sep 28, 2008 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I for one see the same outcome as the first two fights, the only difference is there are no ring ropes to dangle between. If Rampage comes in looking like he did against forrest, he’s in for a beating. TMZ had the pictures of that escalade he hit…way more damage than the broken mirror, the truck was totalled!!
If Rampage can get a great training camp in, he has a shot
either way, I think it will be a great fight!

by kevin doesn't know shit on Sep 27, 2008 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see this looking more like Wandy-Chuck. Not that I see Wandy losing, I just see a back-and-forth stand-up war, with Rampage maybe going for a takedown or two.

by Pat on Sep 27, 2008 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

After getting 2 BRUTAL KO’s from Wandy, I think Page tries his hardest to keep this fight on the ground, where he is bigger and stronger if he’s on top. I know Page is improved, but Wandy has an iron chin and is willing to take a shot to get inside and rock someone. I think PAge standing up wioth Wanderlei AGAIN, will result in a 3rd loss, thus setting Wandy up for a title shot.

by --utaptout-- on Sep 27, 2008 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so wandy wins 2 after losing 3 and gets a title shot? or do they just consider his UFC record and not his MMA record. if it the first, then he’ll be 2-1.

by sinister on Sep 27, 2008 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They will definitely consider his UFC record first and foremost. But I’m with Rampage on this one, no matter what the history is behind them. All out WAR RAMPAGE!!!

by The Negation on Sep 27, 2008 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes wandi should get title shot if he wins. why not? afterall, one dimensional lidell was clearly not deserving of a title shot even if he would have beat rashad though he was going to get it anyways!! the outcome wont be any different. wandi will chase him and finish him.

by blah. anything can/and will happen in MMA on Sep 27, 2008 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think wot he means is that if wandy wins this the ufc will give him a title shot cuz it’ll make them cash $$!!! not because he deserves it cuz he definatly doesnt even if he does win rampage IMO

there are other fighters that deserve a title shot way more than him

by ufcaddict on Sep 27, 2008 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d let him fight the winner of Machida/Silva then give him the title shot. Actually, I would have liked to see Machida vs Rampage, and then W.Silva vs T.Silva. Winner fight for title, and since Rampage lost a close decision,
it wouldn’t matter that he only won fight.

Don’t get me wrong, I am excited about this match, but I think there could have been other ways of having the Big 4 LHWs matched up.

by sinister on Sep 27, 2008 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

rampage got a title fight after beating the 25th ranked lhw, eastman. don’t get me started on who deserves a shot. wandys resume looks alot better than pages when he got his shot. I dont like the champs getting so much time in between fights, that sucks. Page went nine months without fighting before the griffin bout. let the champs fight about every three months.

by CLETIS on Sep 27, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely let Machida have his title shot at long last. Then maybe Wandi needs one more win. Put him up against Sokou maybe?

Also, concerning whether or not he deserves a shot soon or not, keep in mind that Wandi has only faced top notch competition, and one heavyweight. Liddel, Henderson (and he was sick for that one) and, well Jardine I just don’t know about, but Jardine has wins against Griffin and Lidell so he’s nothing to sneeze at.

by dave on Sep 28, 2008 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good point Cletus but on the other hand, the LHW division absolutely reaked at that time.

I love it how he says “no it is not necessary to post how much cash i drop cause i dont need the hype.” and then the very next thing is “im famous around these parts in case u did not know.” lawl.

If someone was still stupid to believe this guy had a bit of credibility he then starts talking about how everyone who replys to his post are his fans. If that aint delusional I don’t know what is.

Although he could be partly telling the truth, maybe he’s a 8 year old kid who won a game of monopoly. Are all these bets made with monopoly money stinky?

I got Rampage winning this one by tko. Hes too big and now too good for Wandy.

by JRV on Sep 27, 2008 4:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he still weighs 205. his skills are much better, but he still has trouble with technical fighters especially ones that use leg kicks. forrest exploited this in his match with page, and wandys hits and kicks alot harder. I think Page has a good chance but he must work on these things to take wandy.

i know silva and jackson dont especially like each other but here it sounds like they really dont get along, anyone wanna clue me in on this feud? i didnt know it was anything beyond a minor disliking of each other????

by medecine balls on Sep 27, 2008 4:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just a long rivalry from the pride days. Theres a clip of Rampage calling out Wandy for the belt after he won a fight, and Wandy coming into the ring and getting in his face and shoving him immediately. Also, in Japan, alot of times fighters’ teams would feud, and that would escalate tensions. Chute Boxe had a bit of a feud with Brazilian Top Team, and thats why Wandy and Arona hated eachother so much. You don’t see that so much in the U.S. Theres more respect and honor among fighters for the most part, which usually results in fewer feuds, and when they do have them, theyre always over after the fight ends…i.e. BJ/Sherk, Shamrock/Ortiz 3.

make up ur minds already…i believe it will be changed again… but the ufc needs this for 92, it was lookin weak…i wonder if evans vs. griffin will still happen with this addition.

by j-bone on Sep 27, 2008 4:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

im pretty sure it will, making this from top to bottom a better card than 91. i guess the ufc must be pretty confident that brock/randy can sell on its own. florian/stevenson is a nice fight, but not co-main event worthy imo. then we have 93, wich has gsp/penn 2 and machida/silva. nov through jan is gonna be great for the ufc with these three ppvs plus the tuf finale and the ufn for the military being free shows. what a great time to be a mma fan.

I don’t think training with Wolfslair is going to benefit or prepare Rampage for a fight against Wandy. Rampage is going to get KTFO, just like the other two times.

it’s about time they decided a date

by Ian on Sep 27, 2008 6:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alot of people know that I’m a big fan of Pride’s glory days, but it is truly a great time to be an MMA fan. The next few months are going to be phenomenal. Couture/Lesnar(although I disagree with it), Nog/Mir, Wandy/Rampage 3, BJ/GSP 2(IMO the biggest fight in MMA history), Diego/Alves, KenFlo/Stevenson, and more. Plus we’ll probably get to see Fedor/Arlovski eventually, and I’m positive that Fedor will end up in the UFC. An eventual matchup between Brock and Fedor will happen in a few years, after Brock gets some more training and earns it. I still think that Werdum has earned a title shot much more so than Brock has. When was the last time ANY pro fighter got a title shot in the UFC after 3 pro fights with a 2-1 record? If Brock was as good as people think he is, he would’ve sunk his hooks in on Herring, flattened him out, and finished him, instead of riding his back to a decision. That showed how 1 dimensional he still is.

by --utaptout-- on Sep 27, 2008 6:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

UTAPOUt, you underestimate herrings ground game….. If it were that simple Brock would have gave Herring a chance to scramble or to roll into guard(possibly getting submitted or caught with a strike, look at gsp/serra 2, very similar fight)….. Brock’s gameplan was to get Herring down and keep him down and he put on a helluva show doing it. As for Werdum’s title shot hes in the same boat as a machida he fights and wins but doesnt win like lets say like rashad over chuck, thus bc of his showings he is unknown to most and wont draw any ppv, simple buisness. I see (assuming werdum and kongo get through their next opponents ) a kongo/werdum fight similiar to that of cote/big dog for title shot. Remember Couture has never faced an opponent as large and strong as Brock but if there was anyone to beat brock it would be randy. Brock is the only legitimate reason for randy to comeback and fight, to test if he can still fight at that champion level and will give us some insight to the randy/fedor fight.

I also think UFC 91 needs more than Brock/Randy for a main event some fighters to add would be Franklin, Chuck, Irvin and possible Jardine(assuming he finishesvera quickly)

by Colin D on Sep 27, 2008 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just don’t think Brock deserves a title shot at all, after 3 pro fights. And as far as Brock being the only guy for Randy to fight, there’s a guy in there they call Nogueira. I imagine that Randy would have come back to fight Nog, if TUF hadn’t already been set. Or, maybe he didn’t see Nog as an important fight, but IMO, Nog beats all three of these other guys, and will come out as the undispiuted HW champ in the end. At least until Fedor is finally signed.

As far as Herring’s ground game, he sure didn’t show much of it against Brock. All he did was turtle up and take the abuse. He’s got decent sub defense, but he doesn’t have any sub skills. I guarantee that Brock wasn’t worried about getting subbed by Heath. I believe that Brock is training hard, but I think he isn’t training in the right things. Anyone who has trained jiu-jitsu, knows that when a guy rolls over and gives you his back, you sink your hooks in, flatten him out, and either choke him or pound him out, a la Matt hughes vs. Royce Gracie. A dominant performance that goes to decision is NEVER as impressive as a finish, especially when there’s such an obvious mistake being made. Joe Rogan mentioned it several times during the fight, and Joe Rogan knows alot more about MMA than Brock, or most anyone else too.

by --utaptout-- on Sep 28, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If it does go the same way as their earlier fights, Rampage can’t fall through the ropes after the knees, so he will fall face first into the cage?

That would be ugly.

I see Rampage not getting stuck in that stupid clinch this time around though, and from there on it will get very interesting.

But if he does get stuck in the plum (spelling) again then he will probably be eating knees til he is crosseyed again.

Fight of the Night/Staredown of the Year?

HMM.. should be good.

by DirtyML on Sep 28, 2008 12:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’ll only get stuck in the plumb, after he gets tagged with a couple punches and gets rocked, just like before. I don’t think its the clinch that will beat him. I just think Rampage will crumble under the intensity of Wanderlei’s attack again. Rampage has a tough time dealing with someone coming forward relentlessly. Shogun beat him in the exact same way.

by --utaptout-- on Sep 28, 2008 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rampage will lose round one KO/TKO, you have to remember unlike pride which gave rampage WAY WAY to much time to ‘try and recover’ he took more of a beat down then needed that wont happen in the ufc the fight gets stopped early almost a for sure.

by Khaos_Warrior on Sep 28, 2008 2:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WAR WANDERLEI!!!!!! He hints to wanderlei on steroids. People say wanderlei looks smaller. This could be to a different reason too. since fighting in pride, wanderlei has switched from chute box to Xtreme corture. different training= different body. I wouldnt be surprised if rampage looked different in the fight whith his gym switch too. What made the difference in both fights was simply that wanderlei needed tone hole in destroy rampage. The muy thai clinch has been the cause for all three of rampages KO losses. Wanderlei by KO. Not sure when, not sure how, but he will KO him. Rampage got better, but every fighter has the one guy they cannot eat, and for him, thats the legend of Wanderlei Mother F**king Silva.

Cant wait. Honestly, rampage, despite how he’s improved, doesnt have the skills to take wanderlei. Wanderlei has better striking and clinch. Sure rampage is probably a stronger wrestler but it wont matter since Wanderlei is great at BJJ. Its gona be the best KO of the night when Wandy breaks rampages head open. Hope the KO’s stick witht he trend. The more times wanderlei and Rampage fight, the nastier Wandy KO’s Rampage.
