MMA Quick Quote: Antonio Silva innocent until proven guilty on steroid charge

"Antonio (Silva) is the EliteXC heavyweight champ and he will continue to be the heavyweight champ until he has his day in front of the commission. When the commission comes and levies down on him with whatever ruling they have, EliteXC will huddle up and we will figure out what we want to do about the title at that point."
-- Elite XC Vice President Jared Shaw stands behind his suspended heavyweight champion via MMAWeekly.com, taking an innocent until proven guilty approach. Silva tested positive for steroids following his title winning fight against Justin Eilers on July 26. Some would say that's pretty solid proof of guilt, but Silva and his camp are arguing that a tumor in the champ's body has caused an abnormal dose of testosterone to be released into his system. I'm no doctor, but if that's true, it sounds like a legitimate reason for the failed test. It's still hard to believe a man the size of Silva, who cuts weight to make the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds would take anything that would add more mass to his already enormous frame, especially before a fight with Eilers -- who is one of the smaller heavyweights in mixed martial arts. At least Elite XC is giving him the chance to make his case. The promotion deserves some credit for that.

So this tumor never did this in any of his previous fights or made any other drug tests come up positive? I have to call B.S.

Actually I have read in depth about the entire situation as well as the disease he has battled throughout his life and in all honesty, I actually believe that big Foot has not taken steroids. I wont go in depth about the disease right now, but from what I understand taking roids would be just to dangerous for a man that suffers from his condition.
I truly believe that Bigfoot is innocent and I hope that the crappy commissions due their due diligence before further tainting his name by calling him a cheater.

So this is the first time this issue has come up? Is this the first drug test he has ever taken? If his people knew this then why has it never been mentioned before? You would think that if they knew of a chemical problem with his body they would mention it to the athletic commission. I’m not buying it.

I agree with you Mexicutioner! None of this was brought up before, so why now, after a title fight? It seems like his managment is using his (growth thing) as an excuse.

Hey Bas, why do you train that less than mediocre fighter Kimbo? If he is good, why do you let him fight has beens like Shamrock?

What r u talking about Mex? tHis isnt the 1st time its been brought up. His disease has been well documented and the chemical problem is a byproduct of the disease. Its no secret. Thats why he used to have to fight at Super Heavyweight.

John: tell me why he hasn’t tested positive for Boldenone before? Why would he have it now when the tumor was taken out over a year ago and not come up in his other two fights he’s had since? It’s funny how you let your bias towards the CSAC cloud your judgemnet.
by the_mexicutioner on Sep 24, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the CSAC blows, i bet they fd something up AGAIN just like with Sherk, Aleksander, countless other fighters, F**k the CSAC
by brendan on Sep 24, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not a fan of the csac by any means, and still think they screwed Sherk. I hope bigfoot is innocent, but I can’t remember if it is an epitestosterone count that caused them to say it is boldenone, or that they found a metabolite of boldenone in his system. If it is the latter, it will not look good.

i don’t know what tumor he has, i don’t beleave they have sad but i have seen this before with pituitary tumors and it would explain his size.the tumor can grow and stop growing causing people to grow large(andre the giant had one).

According to a report I read on this whole situation, he tested positive for Boldenone. It’s an anabolic steroid thats been developed for veterinary use and is used mostly to treat horses (most probably know that already). Its the same steroid that Josh Barnett, Phil Baroni, and Stephan Bonner have been suspended for taking. Silva had the tumor removed in August 2007 and this was his third fight since then. So all of a sudden it just pops up in his system? I seriously doubt that. The half life for this steroid is pretty long, so if he was getting a steady stream of this in his system he would be popping positive all the time, not just once. I’m still calling B.S.

i do not know the details, if thats the case it dosn’t look good for him , most chemicals linked to positive steroid use are naturally produce by the body as well and some tumors are know to increase those levels like a steroid but like i said i real don’t know the situation here.

Agree 100% Mex! It does look like B.S. to me too!

Translation: I’ll take this opportunity to have Fergie fight a 62-year-old for the title. Then nobody can say he’s a joke when he has the title.

But yet.. K.J. Noons is stripped of the belt.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Sep 24, 2008 10:26 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Noons was stripped for refusing to fight the No. 1 contender. If Silva’s positive test is upheld then he will likely be stripped as well.

Diaz didnt deserv the number one contendership made weight in one fight out of three for the promotion have him fight jake shields.
by Joe on Sep 24, 2008 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And how many fights did Noons have before getting a title shot?
by chefdaddy on Sep 24, 2008 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
simply not enough, I mean Krazy Horse smashed KJ Noons. KJ Noons was sent in to fight Nick Diaz simply for the fact Elite XC wanted Nick to smash KJ. They were using KJ Noons as the UFC used Jason Macdonald. They brought him in to get worked and be a stepping stone for another fighter. So what KJ does not want to fight Diaz? Diaz has not made any weight minus the KJ and Wildman fight. Diaz should have to fight Yves Edwards and if he defeats Yves, then yes.. give him a title shot.

why does any of that matter? who cares who noons thought was the #1 contender, hes the champ (correction: WAS the champ lol) and should have fought anyone put in front of him, hes not in a position to pick opponents, he will always be known as the biggest pu**y in MMA

Is that the tumor that grows on the pituitary (spelling?) gland that makes someone continue to grow their entire life, causing many medical problems and eventualy could be fatal if it is not taken out. See Andre the Giant… Also, that 265 weight limit would be harder and harder to get to if he is still growing. Please claify someone.
by BNF on Sep 24, 2008 10:27 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yes bnf i did not see your post but i said the same thing
by roy on Sep 24, 2008 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I believe he had the tumor removed. I have met with Silva down at ATT and he is gigantic. I doubt he would be trying to bulk up. He clearly cuts to 265
by wrestler189 on Sep 24, 2008 11:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Guys don’t take roids to bulk up they take roids to change their bulk from fat to muscle and to recover from injuries faster. That guy has a typical roid head.
by paco on Sep 24, 2008 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you get that same head from a enlarged pituitary gland
by roy on Sep 24, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a biological impossibility to change fat into muscle and vice versa. Steroids can do lots of things, but the muscle-fat switcheroonie is not one of them.
by PW on Sep 24, 2008 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
there is no doubt that this dude has taken roids… that is just how it works, look at a guy like Shogun he did not look the same without the roids in the UFC he was fat and slow…
by RoB on Sep 24, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
maybe it had to do with him not having a acl
by roy on Sep 24, 2008 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok yea.. but it’s also easier to get injured after taking steroids in your career
by RoB on Sep 24, 2008 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
so everyone with a torn acl took steroids?i have never heard rumors of him taking them so why bash, as far as him being slow and fat in the ufc he has had only one fight and will see how he does when he comes back from back to back acl reconstructions.
by roy on Sep 24, 2008 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no im not saying everyone with a torn acl has been on steroids.. im just saying that many athletes in sports today is cheating and even if they never get caught it might catch up to them later in their careers with injuries and stuff..

its not a tumor. lol. kindegarden cop.

Tim Sylvia failed a steroid test, he sure didn’t need to get any bigger. The type of steroids that they find in your body are different from just testosterone. Silva is screwed, and I am very surprised that EliteXC is standing behind him. But I guess no one ever accused the EliteXC brass of being too smart.

I think he should be stripped of his title.
