Ed Soares on Anderson Silva retirement remarks

anderson silva myspace
Props: MMA.tv

Quoteworthy:

"Anderson’s goal is to retire when he is 35. He still has six fights on his contract and he doesn’t turn 35 for another 18 months. I know he will finish his six fights before he considers hanging up his gloves."

Ed Soares -- the manager for UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva -- clarifies the wild retirement revelation that the Brazilian made in a recent interview right here. The interesting thing here is that Soares indicates that Silva could consider retirement when he fulfills his contractual obligations and hits the ripe old age of 35. Silva is currently 33 years old, meaning he could very well retire around the time he initially mentioned -- we're talking about perhaps a difference of six or seven months. And if he continues to press UFC President Dana White to be more active it's possible that he could squeeze in six fights in the next 18 months. The good news is that Silva intends to compete at least six more times inside the Octagon ... enjoy them while you can.

Absolutely…Sorry, but I’m Atenean! Finals parekoy!! But even if we’re from rival schools, we’re still one when it comes to MMA.

And you’re right, here the UFCs are free, in the US though, it’s an entirely different story. Go Balls!!

Good to hear then. let’s just hope for the best 6 fights of Anderson’s career before he retires. I want Anderson to fight the cream of the crop at 205 lbs at least before he retires because there’s literally nothin’ left for him at MW…

by The Negation on Sep 23, 2008 11:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

"Anderson’s goal is to retire when he is 35." OOooh!! THAT makes sense! And here I thought Silva was going to retire in a year…wtf?? Isn’t that like the same thing? I guess I’m just selfish for wanting him to fight as long as he still can; but to me, Ed Soares’ words aren’t any more comforting than the original news of his retirement. It still means in a very short amount of time, we’ll be saying goodbye to Silva’s amazing mma career.

Let’s not waste anymore of his six remaining fights on Cote please.

Silva vs. Fedor before he retires. Seriously. Catch weight fight at 210 or 215. Fedor could easily make that weight and Silva walks around at like 215. Fedor would lose the weight if the UFC made the right offer.

by RealDrew on Sep 24, 2008 2:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lol no doubt, Cote is a waste of one of those six fights. Its a shame he’s planning on retiring but if he beats 4 LHW’s with a dominant performance he’ll go down as the most feared and dominant fighter of all time (beating out Fedor hands down). *note that I’m subtracting Cote and Okami from the six fights left. I’d say he might possibly fight Hendo again as well but that could leave a possible Liddell, Rampage, and Rua fight. Would he fight Wandy? I know he wouldn’t fight Machida.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 24, 2008 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He will “retire” into a different field of fighting I bet.

He will do his boxing dream or maybe K1, i think his retirement is just from the UFC.

by DirtyML on Sep 23, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

if its 6 fights left then theres no need to panic just yet, thats plenty of time for him to fight some of the best fighters on the planet!! Plus im almost ceertain he wont win them all, so that delay the proposed retirement, hers hoping anyway!! Lets get some quality fighters up against the spider at 205 and test this machine!!!!!!!

Silva will turn 35 in 18 months, add 12 months to that before he turns 36 yrs of age, so really there’s 2 1/2 years left and he can retire at 35 yrs of age. 6 fights with no injuries and all goes according to schedule.

by THORAZINE on Sep 24, 2008 12:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Remember when everyone thought Chuck couldn’t be beat. Just wait, people will find a way to beat him look at the colts.

by Mr.FancyPants on Sep 24, 2008 12:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe he looked at Chucks birthday and planned his retirement accordingly to when Chuck was last dominant?

by DirtyML on Sep 24, 2008 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Spider should fight the Incredible Hulk first before retiring. At least he’s pushing himself to the limit. Really haven’t seen the Spider’s face bloodied up. I think GSP could pose more of a threat than any of the elite 205 fighters in the UFC…in any case, feed Anderson to the wolves first before ending his contract.

by The Negation on Sep 24, 2008 12:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah ive got mad respect for silva, but i hope he gets a few losses before hes out. or else for the next ten years people will say “oh silva could have beat him” about whoever the next great champ is.

by medecine balls on Sep 24, 2008 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

While I have a ton of respect for GSP, I think silva would beat him like he owed him money.

by chefdaddy on Sep 24, 2008 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I’m a huge GSP fan but I don’t really think he could beat Silva. 5"10" vs 6’2" is alot of size and reach to give up and its probably somewhere around 25 lbs. or so in walk around weight.

Just so people remember, Anderson has to lose the MW title in his next 6 fights or the dreaded “champion’s clause” kicks in, where he can’t leave the UFC until he loses his belt. It’s another one of Dana’s sly moves. He had it put in place after BJ won the WW title then left the company to fight guys that couldn’t/wouldn’t come to the UFC, namely Gomi (whom BJ tooled BTW).

by Pat on Sep 24, 2008 12:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm, nice corporate move there by Dana. Well if that’s the case, do you think Silva will lose on purpose so that he could bolt from the UFC? I mean, you say if he’s champ, he can’t retire. I believe he’ll take the easy way out which will be him relinquishing his MW belt so he could retire…

by The Negation on Sep 24, 2008 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude come on… he can retire soon as his six fights are up. he could even retire before if he wanted to, remember randy couture!

by mike22 on Sep 24, 2008 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy didn’t retire, he is, and was always the champ Legally, your slow.

by Chase on Sep 24, 2008 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy never retired, he resigned…which means he just quit the UFC. The contract clause doesn’t allow a champion to resign but they can retire from the sport any time they want to. They just wouldn’t be able to fight in another org.

by just1fix on Sep 24, 2008 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep…Everybody remembers the Randy fiasco…

by The Negation on Sep 24, 2008 2:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He can retire whenever he wants to, he just isn’t allowed to compete in other organizations unless he’s released from his UFC contract which he wouldn’t be if he were still the MW champion.

by GregC on Sep 24, 2008 5:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pat you’re wrong.. He has 6 fights left on his contract.. after he does those he can do anything he wants.. You can’t keep a fighter forever just because he is the champ.. it just means he has to finish his contract while he is the champ

by Kory on Sep 24, 2008 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Correction noted. Thanks.

by Pat on Sep 24, 2008 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing wrong with retiring as the greatest middleweight of his time. I’m sure if he just keeps on fighting and fighting, someone will beat him (again).

by Belisarius on Sep 24, 2008 12:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

UFC should treat the best mma fighter better.. pay anderson more…otherwise he should just follow his dream and fight Roy Jones in boxing.where he would at least get 3 million dollars..which is a smart thing to do(business wise) rather than get 250T per fight….
been reading sports illustrated and im really surprised basketball football tennis, golf.f1 and boxing get tons of cash.while in MMA Dana White has been preaching that mma would be the next NBA so and so…but mma is still soooo far away from mainsteam sports as far as salaries go….

by poot on Sep 24, 2008 3:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Remember though, MMA is NOT mainstream yet. Compared to the sports you mentioned, it’s still in its infancy.

by chefdaddy on Sep 24, 2008 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is how it should be if they would get paid like they should.. as everyone is getting better we will see that the best fighters are the young ones who have the bodies to compete and train the right way, then when they get old like 35-36 they have already made their money and it’s time to step down..

by RoB on Sep 24, 2008 6:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Anderson silva will hopefully old both belts if he fights another 6 fights! sweet..

by Sir_alan on Sep 24, 2008 7:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I say if their not going to feed Chuck to Anderson Silva next then give him the winner of Evans/Forrest so he can be the first person to hold 2 UFC belts at one time.
