World Victory Road accuses Roger Gracie of faking the injury that kept him out of Sengoku 5

roger gracie
Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard Roger Gracie withdrew from his heavyweight fight against MMA legend Travis "Diesel" Wiuff at Sengoku 5 due to an alleged injury sustained in training on September 16.

Gracie (2-0) was set to compete at the September 28 event until an errant kick during sparring caused what his camp described as "An intermuscular tear to the intercostal muscle between the sixth and seventh left ribs".

Rogwash, according to officials from World Victory Road (WVR).

An apology was issued today by WVR on the Sengoku website for Gracie's absence, as well as a detailed account of the efforts put forth to verify the injury with both Gracie and his doctor.

Here is a translation of the letter, courtesy of the lovely Suki MMA:

We regret to announce that Roger Gracie, who was supposed to fight Travis Wiuff on Sep 28, won't fight in Sengoku 5. We will tell you how it came about.

On Sep 17, Kevin Liddle (who is the doctor of Roger Gracie) Emailed us and reported Roger's condition. In the Email, he described that he ordered Roger complete bed rest for 4 weeks because of the damages to his intercostal muscles. Roger's manager actually contacted us a week ago and mentioned about the possibility of Roger's injury. We ordered him to submit a formal doctor's note in the case of his injury.

WVR's official doctor read the Email and considered that Roger's condition wasn't serious enough to cancel the fight. WVR asked Roger to submit additional information such as an official doctor's note and the result of a CT scan or other close examinations he took. However, we didn't hear back from Roger.

On Sep 19, Roger contacted us and requested to have a phone meeting between Dr. Liddle and our doctor. Our doctor, translators and WVR staff were ready for the meeting, however, we were unable to contact Dr. Liddle. When Roger asked for a meeting, he agreed to let Dr. Liddle respond to our questions within 3 hours, but again we didn't hear from Dr. Liddle.

On Sep 20, Dr. Liddle Emailed us and reported that Roger didn't break or crack any bones and that he hadn't even taken an examination.

WVR ordered Roger to arrive in Japan by Sep 22 and take an examination many times. He refused to come to Japan because he expected to have difficulty in breathing during a long flight. We haven't seen him in Japan yet and haven't heard anything from him. So, WVR decided to make this announcement today.

We apologize to Travis and our fans for delivering this news at the last minute. As for Roger Gracie, we are considering punishing him severely. We will find an opponent for Travis as soon as we can.

From the tone of this letter it sounds like Gracie has a lot of explaining to do. Not just to World Victory Road, but to his fans and even Travis Wiuff.

Stay tuned as this story continues to develop.

This is something really hard for me to acept that a " Gracie "..would take this path with WVR.. I would like to hear what Roger himself has to say in his defense.. I’m not going to pass judgment..at this time solely based on this letter from WVR.

hey didnt war machine dodge this guy also? travis wiuff? i thought i saw an interview where he explained that he didnt want to fight him because travis is a super tough guy but doesnt have any name recognition, so the UFC cut him…

Hey, you can never have enough time to prepare for YAMMA champ and rising prospect Wiuff:) Seriously though, even injured i bet he can take him so i don’t this whole mess.

Brendan,,, War Machine ducked Brandon Wolff, Travis Wiuff is in a different weight class

by THORAZINE on Sep 23, 2008 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

my mistake Brandon Wolff was the opponent war machine turned down… sorry

by brendan on Sep 23, 2008 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Pardon my confusion but if you go through all this trouble to officially call yourself War Machine and then you turn down a fight, does it make all that effort pointless. Or did he prefer to fight for free in the philippines like he mention a couple of months back.

You know what else Gracies’ wouldn’t do? Take steroids. Oh…. riiiiiight.

Um, never mind.

Same here, I was somewhat a fan of his, I was actually thinking of training at his academy in London. But now after this I’m not so sure. Let’s see where this leads, but it’s not looking good.

That sounds kinda ridiculous to me. You wouldnt train under him for that? Im sure its some kind of misunderstanding. I wouldnt pass up an opportunity to train under a gracie at all. I wonder if you are even telling the truth actually.

SukiMMA always does a great job translation many japanese websites and fighter blogs. She contributes a whole lot to the mma world.

Wait a minute, MMA legend Travis Wiuff? Lulz…

by Mrs.Featherbottom on Sep 22, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know about calling him a legend… but he’s definitely a somebody..

by THORAZINE on Sep 23, 2008 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

very experienced fighter, looked him up on wiki

by brendan on Sep 23, 2008 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Why don’t you watch some of his fights instead of reading his life story?

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 23, 2008 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

this kind of fight dodging is probably more frequent than people assume

although I don’t have an opinion about this particular instance (may or may not be)

by aa on Sep 23, 2008 3:26 AM EDT reply actions

Wiuff is really dangerous.. KOed Jardine in 6 sec

by Mysterio on Sep 23, 2008 4:49 AM EDT reply actions

Okay, I hope the “LEGEND” moniker was a sick joke. Wiuff has lost every single fight in Pride and UFC. He is a can smasher, but he’s B-level at best.

by WarJardine on Sep 23, 2008 6:03 AM EDT reply actions

Hey WarJardine from what I hear from Mysterio he beat Jardine in 6 secs. Does that make Jardine a can? Maybe you should have to change your name to WarCan?

In an unprecedented move WVR/Sengoku have published an article on their website that directly or indirectly accuses Roger Gracie of faking his injury so as not to face his last minute opponent…Travis Wiuff. As reported on EFNSports, Roger took a front kick to his rib from Braulio Estima in training for this fight, and was advised by his doctor that he could not fight this event, but should be ok for the Sengoku January event…….

I find it hard to believe that Roger would duck a fight. I find it harder to believe to think that missing a fight when injured would influence someone not to go and train at his academy.
