Anderson Silva: 'I'll retire next year'

Anderson Silva

Props: InTheGuard.tv

Quoteworthy:

"I'll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don't need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I'll put my gloves aside."

-- UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva -- the man who tells company president Dana White that he wants to fight more often -- sounds like he may be bored. And who can blame him if the promotion doesn't get him someone who will take him beyond the second round. Let's hope something has been lost in translation or that he gets some money fights in the loaded light heavyweight division ... fast. Real fast.

How about move up a division

by Mike on Sep 21, 2008 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly…

by Semesy on Sep 21, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Is he due a new contract???

by MoonUK on Sep 22, 2008 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions

A Silva is a genius. I don’t actually think he’ll be retiring in a year but it’ll have Zuffa on his heels. They’ll throw him some really hard fights in the LHW division so they can break his aura of being undefeatable. They can’t afford to let him retire at the top and have some Randy situation.

I doubt anyone else feels the same way because they down talk a lot of the guys I’m going to refer to… but I miss the old UFC, those guys always fought their hearts out and never complained about pay or who they were fighting. I’m talking the Hughes-Franklin-Liddell era. Don’t forget this is the time of Wandy-Cro Cop-Rua in Pride

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 22, 2008 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

how did chuck not care about money? hes the highest paid fighter ever, guys like miletich, jeremy horn who fought over 100 carreer fights for FREE tank fought for FREE in his first run, those were the real days you listed 3 guys whos era was the start of money hungriness

by randy murders on Sep 22, 2008 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course he was the highest paid in the UFC, this is because he was the face of the UFC. Being the highest paid doesn’t mean he’s money hungry it means he’s at the top. The three guys I pointed out never made money an issue. Can you tell me when you knew about how much Chuck made until Dana announced it? No because none of them refused to fight based on money and none of them went public about it. You didn’t know jack until they all three were no longer on top so like I said it was their era where it was about fighting not money, not friends, but fighting to see who was the best. Being the champ and the face of the UFC means you get paid a lot of money more than almost any other fighter in the sport so there is no reason you should be complaining when you make $100k per fight, more than most people make in a year. and what they can make in a year (granted they fight enough) they’d make more than a lot of people could make in their lifetime.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 22, 2008 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: Cogito Ego Sum’s 9/22 post at 11:20:27

Liddell and Dana made a point of ensuring Chuck was the highest paid fighter since they are good friends. Dana’s comments about Tito’s business skills (I’m not a fan of Tito Ortiz) are typical Dana bad-mouthing anyone who asks for what is fair. Tito asked Dana for what Dana, when he was Tito’s manager, demanded for Tito. If Dana likes you and feels that he can control you, you will get a push in the UFC.

People talk to their colleagues about money all the time, and the fact that Randy Couture resigned/retired was due to the fact that he learned from a lot of fighters that he, as a 2 time HW and LHW champ, was being underpaid. These guys pay their trainers a lot to prepare for the fights, and are at higher risk than boxers of career ending injuries every time they fight. The UFC is doing huge PPV business, especially when they put on a quality card…not that often in recent mont…and their top fighters earn a small fraction what top boxers earn, despite the fact that MMA is far more popular over the last 3+ years.

Anderson Silva has no need to prove anything as he is one of the top fighters in any weight class, if not the best. This might be a money issue, but not entirely. He has destroyed everyone he has faced and has stated that he fought Irvin because he wants to fight more and Dana offered him the fight. I think that he wants to finish out the few remaining fights on his contract and see what happens then. He will probably be looking to transition to boxing if he can capitalize on his name and reputation as a striker.

As for him destroying Mayweather…please. In boxing he would get dismantled by a top 10 fighter in any division where he could fight. He would only be fighting ‘opponents’ to start in 4 or 6 round fights, and not be earning serious money until he fought someone credible. The only place where someone with a name but no real credentials gets paid main event money is EliteXC (read Kimbo Slice) and although they have a primetime TV deal, they clearly don’t know much about marketing.

Back to the greed issue. If you think these guys fight just because they love it, get real. They know they are good at what they do, and hope to make a career of it by making the UFC or some other ‘major’ promotion. Until the UFC starts paying its fighters what is even half of what boxers get, other organizations will keep popping up trying to csh in by snatching away all of the unappreciated talent. Having fighters from UFC, Affliction, EliteXC and others fight each other is the way this sport will gain real credibility and allow it to become truly mainstream.

Dana and the Fertitta’s don’t want that since they are effectively controlling a monopoly by means of their indentured service type contracts. That is why Fedor isn’t in the UFC yet. He wanted to fight Randy, and also wanted to compete in his national sport of Sambo back in Russia. Dana wouldn’t allow it and gave us a story about how Fedor’s agent was being unreasonable, just like he insulted Tito, Randy’s agent, and anyone else who has the audacity to ask for a truly reasonable contract. If the UFC doesn’t change its ways, this sport will continue to degenerate into what boxing has become and like the soap opera of the WWE with all of its behind the scenes deals by Vince McMahon and his son-in-law, bitch, and chief operating officer, HHH.

by Elijah on Oct 18, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think if we moves to LHW and someone kicks his ass, he may want to stick around a little longer, but no one cant make it out of the second round, if that. God, I hope Cote KO’s him, because I’d like to see Silva stick around for a lot longer than just 1 year.

by c-war on Sep 21, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

My exact thoughts.

by the_mexicutioner on Sep 21, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Cote can do it I think. and if Silva is feeling like this, maybe he’ll come into this fight relaxed and not expecting Cote to hit him as hard as he will. We can hope, can’t we :)

by Mike Smith on Sep 21, 2008 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I hope Cote stamps him good.

by Ro-J on Sep 22, 2008 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I can’t believe that anyone thinks Cote might win. He is a suckier version of Franklin, and we saw how well that went. Yes, he has a puncher’s chance, but the Spider doesn’t look like the type of fighter who would get caught by something like that.

by PEZ on Sep 22, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

If this is what he’s sticking with, Liddell-Silva needs to happen quickly.

by c-war on Sep 21, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Makes no sense to me, this match-up…

by The Negation on Sep 21, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Liddell + Silva = Coma for Chuck

by Dolemite on Sep 21, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Title contention and rankings sometimes means nothing. Its about big names fighting big names.

Liddel vs. Silva would make no sense in title contentions….but..who wouldn’t pay to see it?

Other’s would be:
Silva vs. Randy Couture
Silva vs. Rampage
Silva vs. Forrest
Silva vs. Wand
Silva vs. GSP
Silva vs. BJ Penn
Sila vs. Fedor

Regardless of weight class or the such, I think Silva just wants to fight the big names. Big names = big pay checks.

by TabascoSAUCE on Sep 21, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with all of those fights, except for possibly Penn. Penn is fat at any weight above 155 and would be a butterball at 185. As great as his BJJ is, there is not a chance in hell he would get to use it.

by naturalshadow on Sep 22, 2008 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree about the Penn fight, but everything else looks fantastic!

by DSmith on Sep 22, 2008 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he’d win them all…except maybe for the last one. He’s not bad that rusky is he?

by RobH86 on Sep 22, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Penn beat Rodrigo and Renzo Gracie at 185, and lost a decision to Machida at 205. BJ Penn can compete at ANY level.

by pUniSHment on Sep 22, 2008 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Year rite, who is he kidding ? There are so many fights for him, he’s bluffing anyway but still..

by Liddell-Marquardt-GSP-Sherk on Sep 21, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

everyone is jumpin to conclusions here a bit. although i could see him retiring early a la barry sanders, within the next year seems highly unlikely to me. my guess is that this was taken out of context, perhaps he is saying he will just retire if they don’t start getting him fights more often….like “if they won’t let me work then i may as well just retire”, he’s in his prime now and won’t be beaten. he doesn’t want to sit idle while the ufc tries to build their hype machine around him. by the time he gets some of the fights he wants his time may have passed and we will have all missed out on some special stuff. I agree, let him fight as often as he wants and against whoever he wants, him destroying everyone will build his legend far more than the UFC marketing department. I don’t wanna wait 3 years for him to get certain meaningful fights….look how well it’s workin out for randy. half of us don’t even want to see him fight fedor any more.

by Crowls on Sep 21, 2008 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Aren’t there still a few losses that he could avenge?

by naturalshadow on Sep 22, 2008 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

theres always ryo chonan, but he fights at 170 and i doubt hed have any interest in moving up to fight silva, unless maybe the money was right

by brendan on Sep 22, 2008 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions

oh and the yushin okami fight still needs to happen

by brendan on Sep 22, 2008 3:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Nobody’s jumping to conclusions. Silva chooses his words carefully for a reason. The Randy situation also is not a fair comparrison because Randy tried bypassing all HW’s to fight one man and then refused to fight while on contract and lied about his pay. These are the reason’s nobody cares if Randy fights anymore.

Okami will beat Silva. (IMO)

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 22, 2008 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Don’t forget avenging the loss to Daiju Takase

by DDT on Sep 22, 2008 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Na, he has expressed he doesn’t want to get in Machidas way.

by Nick J on Sep 22, 2008 5:15 AM EDT up reply actions

LOL, why not retire on top?
what is he supposed to do, fight anybody
I see no one beating him any time soon, okami is not even worth his time, chuck, rampage, penn or even fedor are truly the only fights that make sense at this point.
I also agree with crowls, where is the whole quote??? mania does this often, misleading us with half a quote! Anderson Silva is a true champion, he wants to fight 5+ times a year and is bored when not doing so, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t grant him this. I’ll take this type of champion any day if given the choice of him or a champ that fights 2 times a year (not going to mention any french canadian names)!
This is why anderson silve (even though he can’t speak english) is one of the most beloved fighters. My hats off to him!!!

by kevin doesn't know shit on Sep 22, 2008 6:16 AM EDT up reply actions

why not? Because business wise he is just on the verge of making big money.. at 205 he could be making chuck type money with some of the fights he could have

by Kory on Sep 22, 2008 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t hate on him for retiring at the top of his game. Bettis and Strahan just did the same thing. Eventually Silva will have to retire, so It might as well be while on top, going down as one of the greatest fighters the world has ever seen (Bas RUTTEN lEGENDARY sTATUS).

But to be honest….I don’t believe it. He may be sincere, but that will change. When ever the UFC feels like he is getting ready to leave, they will just offer him BIG MONEY Mega fights to entice him to stay around for a while Longer.

I expect to see him fight for another 3 years

by john on Sep 22, 2008 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Kory, do you know his background? money doesn’t seem to be the issue and on top of that, him and the nog bros are opening up schools, there is an everyday income!

by kevin doesn't know shit on Sep 22, 2008 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully it is just boredom. A permanent move to 205 might be the challenge the spider needs.

by SaVaGe on Sep 21, 2008 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

thats what i think. he is just going through a stage. i’ll believe it when i see it. lots of atheletes go through this, look how many times brett favre almost retired, did retire, and then un-retire. he should move up to 205 or wait for the winner of gsp/penn. he still has plent of challenges left.

Filho is overrated and is going to get beat down by sonnen

by brendan on Sep 21, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

My thoughts exactly. Sonnen isn’t gonna get armbarred the second time around. And He could definitely withstand submissions. Just check out the heel hook Sobral applied to him back in the day. He screamed in pain, but he never tapped out. Hope he could redeem himself in the rematch…

by THORAZINE on Sep 22, 2008 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

A Franklin Filo fight would be a good call for the next MW champ. To be honest if Silva leaves what does that mean for the MW division? Honestly not much because Franklin is only defeated by Silva so its not like the next guy won’t dominate the division. I’d miss getting to watch Silva fight because this is the only guy who makes me cringe when I watch him fight but if he wants to leave, nobodies gonna stop him… Silva dares them to try!

by BigRedOne on Sep 21, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t help but thinking his retirement is from MMA and he will still try his hand at boxing or maybe even K1.

Can you imagine him in K1? He’d be great.

I think the UFC would be smart to get an A Silva vs Liddell fight going before they are both gone, it is not exactly the most evenly ranked fight, but it would be exciting as hell and lots of money would be involved.

by DirtyML on Sep 21, 2008 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

I after watching Leddell’s last fight, I wouldn’t want to see this fight. The Spider would take him apart!
What is the buzz on this fight? Why are people clamering to see this fight?

by mmamac on Sep 21, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no upside, except for a lot of money, for Silva to fight Chuck Liddell. If he knocks Liddell out, so what, Rashad “titty twister” Evans just knocked chuck out cold. And of course there is always the danger of The Spider getting caught by a lucky Liddell overhand right and getting knocked out himself. So, IMO, Silva has nothing to gain from fighting Liddell.
I’d much rather see The Spider fight Wandy, GSP, Shogun, or Rampage. Or even Forrest, if he gets beat by the titty twister.

by Spider Rulz on Sep 22, 2008 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully, he just leaves the UFC and becomes a free agent. He’s proven himself in the UFC and there are better Middleweights outside the UFC.

by Macho Bullshit on Sep 22, 2008 6:57 AM EDT up reply actions

There is about one decent challenge in any rival org for him to face… then what? Exactly its a dumb idea for him to leave the UFC for some other org even more so that most of those other orgs are on their way to shutting down. I’d love to see him just move up to LHW and let Franklin take over the MW division.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Sep 22, 2008 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

He’s gotta’ get past Cote first. lol

Bored seems right. I dont’ get why Anderson is so content with domingating the worst division in the UFC. He only fought at lhw as a favor to beef up an anti-Affliction card for Dana.
Don’t get me wrong, I love A. Silva. But retiring as supposed P4P king and as champion of the UFC’s Middle-weight division somehow seems lame.

This better be publicity move. Why would he stop? It seems like he just got started in the U.S. He MUST be getting bored but like you guys say he should move up a weight class. I’m just thinking that with his mad skill, he should be making a ton of cash. I can’t wait for the real reason to come out.

by WDC on Sep 21, 2008 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

nah,i doubt it..IMO silva’s just becoming a little bit complacent,a match-up with some bigger name fighters will get him motivated again..
hope he moves up in lhw after the cote fight, lot’s of dream matchups for him there..

by faith7th on Sep 21, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

This would be a real shame, considering he is by far the best and most well rounded fighter MMA has seen to date. The only option he has, as many have mentioned, is to jump up to LHW and score some big pay days there. But that would only pad his pockets, and could jeopardize his best pound for pound ranking. Granted he is a great fighter, but 205 is not his natural fighting weight. He would be giving up a huge advantage with fighting the likes of the top guys there. But then again, after just looking at the list of fighters in the division, I personally give him even odds against anyone in there.

Regardless of if he retires or not, his fights are the greatest to watch, as least for me. No one can come close to having his foot work, angles, head movement, pin point accuracy, and combination of stand up and ground game. And is there a more humble, nicer guy out there?

1. A play for more money…

3. He’s bi-polar….he just said earlier this year that he wanted to fight as much as possible….now he wants to retire?

None of the 3 really make any sense….

by Timebomb on Sep 21, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Like most people on here at least so far, I would like to see him make a perminant jump to 205. Just let Franklin and Hendo fight over the 185 strap, he’s dominated the 185 division long enough, just give it up and take on the bigger fish.

by Toms Bombs on Sep 21, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions

I would hate to see Silva leave at this stage in his career……that’s like kobe leaving the nba at his peak……would be a big loss to the sport, love him or hate him. I honestly think they are doing him and injustice right now with petty fights like Cote…….honestly right now, he should only be involved with SUPERFIGHTS…..like uniting the middle weight title & LHW title……or fighting the elite in both devisions to inspire him to push harder…….i mean c’mon James Irvin and Patrick Cote…….jeez. that’s literally just exibitions……no reason to push harder.
He should be fighting……Gsp,Thiago alves,Machida, for the LHW title whoever that will be, thiago Silva, Bisping…..he doesn’t need to be working his way up through ranks in any division. I think he may want to be an Independent fighter too…..and command millions in salary to fight which would be very realistic .

I think people have a hard time understanding this decision because of what country the majority of us are from. U.S. athletes have a long history of hanging around until their skills fade and they are just shadows of their former selves. Maybe Silva justs wants to go out on top. Another athelete, arguably the best ever at his position retired at the top of his game-Barry Sanders. If memory serves he took a ton of criticism for his decision also.

by brendan on Sep 22, 2008 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

If he is looking to prove something he should wait till T.Silva does away with machida, take the belt then move up to the fight at HW. he walks at 219, and he should PROVE he is the best…

by charles on Sep 22, 2008 12:15 AM EDT reply actions

Im not buying it, hes after a bigger and better contract and quite right!! theres no way he can be happy of his legacy in the ufc being comlete at this stage?! As said before, he has beaten franklin and hendo, the only 2 big names to date. He will want bigger names and bigger fights surely before he retires, there are so many fights out there that dont need to get in the road of , machida.

Liddell #1
rampage #2
GSP #3
thiago #4
bisping #5
not sure if hed fight shogun or wandi?? I doubt it!

Plus loads of other possibles, before a title fight even has to be talked about, plus he can defend his own title. In the mean time machida will get beat by someone and that leaves the current title contenders open for a fight also, forrest/evans! This script aint over.

What about chuck liddells reception in the philipines….quality!! Do we think hes sticking around then for a while longer? Theres no way hes ending his illustrious career ona note like rashad evans, hel be back, im sure of it. Maybe just to KO the spider!!!!

by mo on Sep 22, 2008 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

I think Shogun and Wandi would fight Silva because they have said they would fight each other and I think they use to be a lot closer than AS was with either of them.

Who knows though. There are definately a lot of good fights for him still.

COuld be A good move he is known as the best pnd for pnd, a retirement means he goes out on top. Not the Chuck route , and yes that pains me to say being a really big chuck fan, ps Im moving this wk end and where my new house is ,is way out in the country i dont have to go to dial up do i any body know im not computer savy.

by DBG on Sep 22, 2008 1:30 AM EDT reply actions

it will be the biggest upset in the history of the UFC if Patrick Cote beat Silva..

but i admire cote’s UFC journey, lost his 1st 4 fights in the UFC then came up big with 4 straight wins now in the UFC & all as a underdog, & even get the title shot right now against the most feard #1 P4P fighter in the World “ANDERSON SILVA”

by mad_drummer on Sep 22, 2008 2:34 AM EDT reply actions

They need to have him fight against HEndo&Okami if he were to win against them both then he shouldnt have to defend his MW title anymore and just let him fight at LHW to his hearts content. He could also move up to HW if he does not want to take the title from MAchida.

Maybe it’s a little wake up call he is sending to Dana due to his good friend big Nog getting fucked over in this whole Randy Lesnar BS.

by robw on Sep 22, 2008 4:30 AM EDT reply actions

he’s going to retire and be a pro boxer. and fight for money.thats it. its not wrong because he has to make a living.an athletes career is so short.he is the p4p mma fighter and gets a measly 250T or so..and de la hoya gets 80 million in total.mayweather gets 40million(according to sports illustrated) and pacquiao who is 135lbs would get 15 million to fight dela hoya…

common Dana wheres the money you are promising all these years? enough talking and start paying

by poot on Sep 22, 2008 4:31 AM EDT reply actions

hope he fights roy jones(his dream fight according to anderson)in boxing because he deserves it… athletes should get paid more than the promoters…roy jones indicated interest.don king as well… it was only Dana who stopped it from happening last january…the guy deserves a huge pay day..mma fighter trains 3 times more than a boxer but is paid 20x less.
justice

by poot on Sep 22, 2008 4:34 AM EDT reply actions

Silva you better keep your word and fight Bisping in England! Stop running from him like Franklin did.

by Tony on Sep 22, 2008 4:34 AM EDT reply actions

if anderson wants to be a pro boxer just to earn more money, i think i’ll have to respect it, he deserves it

by mad_drummer on Sep 22, 2008 5:01 AM EDT reply actions

Give him to Forrest, he’ll get his whole five rounds then reconsider playing the game.

by The Mymus on Sep 22, 2008 5:10 AM EDT reply actions

Mymus – True, I think Forrest would take him the distance, or pound out a victory before the fifth.

by MMACrossfire on Sep 22, 2008 7:17 AM EDT up reply actions

lol, stop smoking pot.. he would be out inside 2 rounds

by RoB on Sep 22, 2008 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

too bad for some upcoming current contenders, they might not get a chance against the spider:

demian maia
michael bisping
thales leites

etc…

regardless of he wants to leave or not i just want to see silva vs. henderson one more time.

by mad_drummer on Sep 22, 2008 5:14 AM EDT reply actions

This guy is not motivated because the promotion is not giving him fights that he is really interested in and also I know that what is making is not motivating either. He is said to The best on the Planet, so he must be paid as such.

by YSA on Sep 22, 2008 7:32 AM EDT reply actions

cote has no chance to beat silva….but i would like to see him move back up to Light H.D….but i still think he would dominate….Anderson silva is the best pound for pound fighter in the UFC today…..hopefully he sticks around longer than 1 yr

by ScottBags on Sep 22, 2008 9:09 AM EDT reply actions

somebody should really kick his ass, I remember BJ penn said that if pulver hadn’t beaten him he would have retired. we have the same situation here..

by shamo84 on Sep 22, 2008 10:16 AM EDT reply actions

If he has fights left on his contract him sure he will have too fight again , kinda like Couture..

And he just signed a Budlight Sponsorship , same as Chuck. How is he just gonna drop a few contracts and nobody care?

by dayzah on Sep 22, 2008 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

you understand that next year is not tomorrow right?

by shamo84 on Sep 22, 2008 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

This is talk of a fighter who is clearly not being pushed enough.

I mean let’s be fair at 185, he has been so dominant that there are no longer any creditable contenders to the belt in my opinion. To put him up against Cote, who was unconvincing against Almeida, is laughable. Even a win over Leben wouldn’t justify a shot for Bisping in my eyes. He would get found out by Silva for sure. Right now, no-one comes close to him in this weight class.

Silva’s retirement would be a blessing for the UFC’s middleweight division, as his dominance has turned it stale. I hope when he crushes Cote, UFC allow to him move up to 205 permanently and vacate the middleweight belt. If the title was vacated, this could lead to a grand prix of sorts in the division. The fights start to have meaning and gather interest again.

If he really is going to retire in 2009, why he is being given lacklustre fights? He needs to be given the best of the light-heavyweight division. There is no one to cause him too many problems at 185. Catchweight fights against GSP, Penn and Fedor are impractical because of the weight differences. So to be honest, the best option is to see him being challenged by the cream of the 205 weight class rather than going through the motions against Cote.

Bring on the SUPERFIGHTS!

by Jourdan on Sep 22, 2008 11:11 AM EDT reply actions

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. There are two huge UFC records that he is coming up on surpassing…

1) The record number of title defenses in the UFC is 5 consecutive (Tito and Hughes). Silva only has 3 right now (should be 4 but f*!king Lutter). He should be able to blow this record away in the MW division.

2) Undefeated record in the Octagon is 8-0 (Gracie and Fitch) and Silva will tie that record if he gets by Cote.

Even if he does retire in a year, he should be able to take both those records if he remains undefeated. And I would expect him to want to smash those records if he can. Only time will tell…

by just1fix on Sep 22, 2008 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

you mean “when” he gets by cote right? :-)

by shamo84 on Sep 22, 2008 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

LOL! No, I really did mean “if”. This is MMA after all. Ever since watching Serra TKO GSP, I have been unable to use “when” with ANY of my MMA predictions. I think I’m scarred for life ;)

by just1fix on Sep 22, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

That came out of nowhere. There are still alot of good blockbuster fighst for him, but I can’t argue about how easy things have been for him. He doesn’t have anything to prove. I guess he just doesn’t feel challenged. Dana will talk him out of it.

by DSmith on Sep 22, 2008 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Anderson Silva will go down in history as 1 of the best ever!

by kama kaze on Sep 22, 2008 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

too bad there’s so many good fights left out there for him, there’s still a few fighters around he might be a challenge for him.

by nathan on Sep 22, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

fedor will crush him and ufc stock will decline

by patrickgamil on Sep 22, 2008 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

i’m not even saying that he’s for sure lesser than fedor.

just that he’d lose that match up

by patrickgamil on Sep 22, 2008 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t blame him I would fulfill the contract then pursue challenges such as the Roy Jones fight. not only for money but for glory

by wayne on Sep 22, 2008 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds like the spider is scared of sticking around long enough to face the new GSP. I’m not sure he’d lose, but it would probably go more than 2 rounds. And what about Rashad or Couture?

There are still too many questions that need to be answered before you can say he is the ‘best ever’.

by Spitforce on Sep 22, 2008 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

silva is a classy guy and would never say “why are you putting me in a fight with cote”. instead he will say “if this is the best the ufc has to offer me in terms of challenges, i have nothing left to prove”

i dont have anything bad to say about cote, only that silva shouldnt have to fight him. this is nothing more than silva letting the higher ups at ufc know that they need to give him more attention and figure out a way to get him better fights, better pay, better name recognition better everything. silva is a really special fighter and the ufc needs to figure out how to use hm to explode the sport to the next level.

i said this before and i believe it more so now. ufc should have franklin move down to 185 again. when someone beats franklin then they can challenge anderson silva for the mw belt. until then, silva keeps his belt and can fight all the biggest names except of course machida, his friend.

and franklin get the awesome fights he wants. who doesnt want to see franklin vs hendo, marquart, bisping, or leben? or anderson vs rampage, wandi, shogun, jardine, rashad, or forest?

by COR on Sep 23, 2008 12:54 AM EDT reply actions

If Silva really retires, UFC will be losing one of the greatest fighters they have ever had. I hope he doesn’t go any time soon.

by E. Fairway on Sep 23, 2008 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

The problem is this Anderson Silva wanted to fight Roy Jones, Jr in a boxing match and his camp were in talks and Dna White comes waving his contract. some of the top boxers make no less than a million per fight. The UFC need to come off with the money and pay him his value. You have Kimbo Slice and he makes more money than the Silva.
