Demian Maia vs Nate Quarry UFC 91 fight possible

demian maia nate quarry
Undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia (8-0) will likely return to middleweight action against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 alum, Nate Quarry (10-2), at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15, according to Tatame.com.

Here's a sip from Maia on the match up:

"I didn’t study his fights yet, I’ll receive a DVD with his fights, but I only watch my opponents’ fights when the fight gets closer. I’m training a lot my stand up game like for the last fight, but every time I can I do some BJJ trainings."

That's a smart approach to this type of fight because Maia -- a 2007 Abu Dhabi tournament winner -- doesn't need to improve much on the ground.

He has won all three of his 185-pound bouts inside the Octagon since his debut with the promotion at UFC 77: "Hostile Territory" back in October 2007. And he's come out on top in each one of those contests in style, defeating Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman and Jason MacDonald by way of submission and earning "Submission of the Night" honors for all of those wins.

It's a remarkable streak, which he will look to keep intact against the heavy-handed "Rock."

Quarry is undefeated (2-0) since a nearly two-year break from competition to recover from a serious injury that required "spinal fusion" surgery to repair. He stopped Pete Sell via come from behind third round knockout in his return fight and outpointed Kalib Starnes on all three judges scorecards in his most recent performance.

This is a fine addition to a card that already includes the "Biggest Fight in UFC History" between heavyweight champion Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar as the marquee attraction.

This is awesome. Since Wand will be on that card too, i bet he’ll train with him. Maia says it’s hard finding people to train with towards christmas so this works out awesome. I am thinking triangle?

This will be a good stepping stone for Maia to get to Mr. Anderson…

This card is looking better by the minute.

Maia is amazing on the ground – offense and defense and will definately get the sub if he can get it to the ground.

Quarry has good takedown defense though so I hope Maia is willing to eat a few shots in the process.

Maia is one of my favorite fighters to watch. this should be a very solid match up. Maia better work his hands and his takedowns. Then again, with high level Jitsl like that, he can always just Pull Guard and go to work on Nate’s Limbs!

WAR MAIA!

Don’t be so quick to assume that Maiaaiaiaia is going to win this one. Nate is a very intelligent fighter who is probably doing nothing but training wrestling and takedown defense. I can see Nate peppering Maia with punches and working the clinch to keep the fight standing.

PW, u r damn right! I am a big fan of Maia, not so much of Quarry but I will admit that this is NO cakewalk for Maia. The Rock is a very tough guy, I just dont think to many UFC middleweights can hand with Demian on the ground.

If Nate works the clinch it will allow Maia to just pull guard and then Nate will be in trouble. Nate has to abandon his clinch game for this fight. He needs to work stand up (sticking and moving) keeping distance to avoid takedowns or Maia pulling guard because if the fight goes to the ground, NATE is DONE!!!!

I am not assuming that Maia beats Nate, but I am HOPING that he does

wow! Quarry has looked good since his return, this will be a great fight

by theCloser on Sep 18, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

he looked like sh*t against Pete Sell. I love Quarry but Maia will win this easy.

by c-war on Sep 18, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

He took a lot of counter punches, but I wouldn’t say he looked like shyt. How can you look like shit with a devastating ko win, so nice that the blood was punched straight from Sell’s gob into the 5th row?

by theCloser on Sep 19, 2008 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Maia for submission of the night…!

by The Negation on Sep 19, 2008 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Lets go Quarry!!! As long as it doesnt go to the ground, Nate by KO!

by JV on Sep 18, 2008 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

Yes sir… How could any one not like Quarry. Maia has been training his stand up with Wandi, but I don’t think that will help agaisn’t Quarry’s. If it hits the ground, lookout…

bet the farm on quarry

by mike on Sep 18, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

Didnt Maia lose to Cote?

by jin on Sep 18, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

No, that was Ricardo Almeida. Maia beat MacDonald at UFC 87.

wow.. go Quarry. probably my favorite middleweight fighter. nate by decision.. i dont think he’ll knock maia out, and he wont be stupid and go to the ground.

Hey jin Maia is undefeated in case you were wondering.

by Andrej on Sep 18, 2008 9:20 PM EDT reply actions

HAHA thats funny sh!t

by belfort_fan on Sep 19, 2008 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Argh bloody hell – two of my fave middleweight fighters against each other. I love Maia’s BJJ, its so inspiring to watch, and on the other hand you have the nicest guy in the world who has some heavy hands and good standup skills.

Match to be ruled NC due to both guys being awesome.

anybody can change!!!! war quarry!!!!

Maia 2nd round…….EZ work

by Jason T on Sep 18, 2008 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

A good fight quarry generally has some serious reach and usually uses it well.

by JB on Sep 18, 2008 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

Very suprised so many people are either stoked on quarry or genuinely believe he will win. Maybe im wrong, but I pegged this for a fairly easy win for Maia. I see him possibly having a little difficulty taking quarry down and pulling guard and subbing him in the first.

by Scott on Sep 19, 2008 1:45 AM EDT reply actions

good matchup. both are good guys but go with nate because of his stand up advantage. quarry UD

by markg on Sep 19, 2008 3:37 AM EDT reply actions

Maia by guillotine or RNC

by DirtyML on Sep 19, 2008 5:42 AM EDT reply actions

Maia by sub over Mr. Monotone.

by the_mexicutioner on Sep 19, 2008 8:04 AM EDT reply actions

In all honesty, I think this is extremely tough match up for Demian Maia. I think if Quarry can keep this fight standing he will win. I believe if he uses leg kicks he will wear our Maia, and his takedown attempts will be sloppy. I’m going Quarry round 2 TKO

by "Mr. NC-17" on Sep 19, 2008 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

Quarry is still improving, and has been great in his last two. Plus he hits very hard. Quarry Rd 2. He’ll hit him in the face so hard, his trunks will land in the 5th row.

by GodDamnMike on Sep 19, 2008 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

I see this going just like the Maia Herman fight complete and utter destruction! Maia by whatever he chooses!

by TapSnapOrNapBJJ on Sep 19, 2008 11:15 AM EDT reply actions

Darn it… i wanted to see Maia win some more fights in the ufc. I just dont see him getting this fight to the ground. and if he doesnt he will get knocked out unless he pulls a Kaleb Starnes. But if Maia gets it to the ground, he will win easily.
