This is the problem with Guida. He is happy to just keep him on his back and to not really push the fight.

Did anyone else noticed that he only really tried when he heard the clapper at the end of Round 3 when there was 10 seconds left?

Guida is a like a gate-keeper. i bet if florian fight clay florian might lose. clay will finda way to end a winning streak.

Amen!!! all he did the entire 3rd round was hold on around danzig’s waist. at least 3+ minutes of the 3rd round. it was pathetic, the ref should have seperated them up and restarted the fight with both fighters standing. if guida would’ve done the same thing after being seperated it would’ve looked really bad on him

I thought the same thing at the 3:13 (I belive) mark of he 3rd round as well.

Mac is known for his mental game and he was completely out of the fight when the 3rd round started. He looked compltely discouraged. Before the 3rd, Goldy said, and Rogan agree, that Guida is winning the fight. I had the fight 1-1 (1st to Danzig and 2nd to Clay). Two judges saw it same as me which means that Danzig was plenty alive going into the 3rd. If he won the last round he would have won a split decision.. But instead, he did NOTHING.

But neither did Guida, except hold onto his legs. Dan Miragliotta restarted Herman and Belcher whenver they were in the clinch for more than like 15 seconds AND Herman was staying active. If Dan ref’d the GUida fight.

id chalk that up to strategy, ya the last half of the 3rd round was boring, but he knew he was ahead in the pts game and played it safe

If you rewatch GSP vs Fitch, GSP does the same thing in the last 2mins of the 5th – wouldnt wanna keep it standing and get caught

It’s too bad Guida has no real stopping power, other than stoppages from gnp

Gotta give Guida credit those – he slammed a much bigger Danzig rather easily

He was fighting to keep his job last night. Maybe next time he’ll be a little more aggressive.

by DDT on Sep 18, 2008 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

At least he admitted he didn’t do much when he was on top.

by PW on Sep 18, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Regarding Clay’s takedowns… He shouldn’t have been earning points on many of them since he did NOTHING when he took him down. 9 times out of 10, Mac used the fence to stand right back up, immediately, meanwhile Guida didn’t attempt a single strike.

by ViolentMike on Sep 18, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

why does that matter? if danzig had trained to avoid the takedown and work his scramble better than he would have been able to get out and throw more strikes… dont blame the guy who won!

by brendan on Sep 18, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

all that hate, listen MMA involves game plans, Mac is a long light weight. Guida couldn’t stand with him, and he couldn’t take him to the ground because mac is very dangerous there. So gui implamented a great plan and stuck to it. The guy is all heart and that is why I love to see him fight.

by Ro-J on Sep 18, 2008 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

No hating on my part. I actually really like Clay as a fighter. Thats just what I saw. People need to realise they are in a fight and as much as I love good wrestling and control (GSP does it a lot) it is one thing avoiding the stand up but avoiding his ground game as well just makes a stalemate in my books.

If thats the kind of fight you like to watch, good for you.

I actually enjoyed the fight for the first 2 rounds overall just thought Guida could have been more offensive instead of just trying to stifle Danzig by holding him against the cage.

Bro i get what you are saying, but for all the boring standing around clay was doing, he was constantly hitting mac with knees and short elbows to try and stay busy, not to mention he had to have slammed mac at least 3-5 times. He fought a smart fight and traded with a good striker. I think he fought perfectly, and god forbid Clay Guida doesnt have fight of the night again, he always has awesome fights, so cut him some slack.

You’re actually making me feel bad about saying what I said. lol

But its probably cos I like Guida so much that I didn’t want to see him have to do that to win.

Regardless I’ll always look forward to future matches and hopefully now that he knows he’s still got a job he’ll be back to his old ways.

There is no denying his heart and determination thats for sure so dont get me wrong on that.

I like Guida and I understand the use of game plans in MMA but I don’t think laying on Mac and not trying to end the fight could be part of that game plan. I’ve seen Guida stand with much stronger fighters. I think the fight should have been stood up more than once to let the fighters fight. I think Mac looked like the better fighter last night even with the loss.

by bdw on Sep 18, 2008 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Guida will never get past the gatekeeper roll. He has below average standup and below average BJJ.

by ViolentMike on Sep 18, 2008 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

All he has is takedowns and conditioning. Too bad the division already has Sean Sherk who is simply a waaaay better version of Guida. Yup, I just said it.

by ViolentMike on Sep 18, 2008 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

you seem salty that guida won

by Mike on Sep 18, 2008 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Guida as well, I thought Danzig was going to win… but I give credit to Guida for fighting smart. If the fight was on the feet, Danzig would have easily won.

The loss is on Danzig’s shoulders, he was too complacent defending the takedowns from the get go. Danzig smiled a couple of times and just didn’t raise his intensity the notch it needed to be throughout the fight.

by THORAZINE on Sep 18, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Look at Guida’s UFC record. It is the DEFINITION of a gatekeeper!!!!

by ViolentMike on Sep 18, 2008 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

clay guida is a machine.

the man is a beast- a pure killer.

i am a big fan of the carpenter!

Clay Guida is a grinder, he makes you tired and he keeps going. Clay Guida, other than Sean Sherk and Kenny Florian, has the best cardio at 155. I would love to see a Guida/Griffin II if Tyson loses, a Guida/Edgar, or even a Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Sep 18, 2008 10:26 AM EDT reply actions

Diaz vs Guida! Good call, that would be a very interesting fight.

by DDT on Sep 18, 2008 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Diaz would own Guida. He is too long and his jits is too good.

by OJR on Sep 18, 2008 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Diaz would probably catch him in a triangle after he was taken down for the 78th time.

by BNF on Sep 18, 2008 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

LMAO. You cannot possibly believe that Nate would lose to Guida…

Please…

by OJR on Sep 18, 2008 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Sarcasim is very hard to figure out when written down. I was being serious about the triangle. Diaz FTW!!!

by BNF on Sep 18, 2008 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

He is just another sherk. Takedown after takedown no real martial arts skill whatsoever.

by yoda on Sep 18, 2008 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

I love watching guida fight…i would pay 45 bucks to watch him as the main event rather than WACTHING MACHIDA FOR FREE……

by skoler1 on Sep 18, 2008 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

Some of those knees Guida was landing to Danzig’s thigh looked like they hurt like hell.

by Punk Rock Scott on Sep 18, 2008 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

Guida would dominate Diaz. It would be like Captain Caveman throwin’ down with Olive Oyl.

by Ernesto on Sep 18, 2008 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

You are deluded.

by OJR on Sep 18, 2008 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

guida said before the fight “you stay in the ufc with wins..not exciting fights” wtf? thats garbage. and after his performance last night i really dont like him anymore. and im glad his fat a$$ brother didnt make weight ..lol
