The Ultimate Fighter tryouts season 9 'U.S. vs U.K.' set for October

During the Ultimate Fight Night 15 Spike TV broadcast, ringside commentator Mike Goldberg announced that the promotion is already in search of mixed martial arts hopefuls for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9.
TUF 9 will feature a mix of welterweights (170 pounds) and middleweights (185 pounds) in a tournament-style format that will culminate with two winners -- one from each weight class.
The wrinkle this season appears to patriotism, pitting fighters from the states and across the pond against one another in a show dubbed, "U.S. vs. U.K."
Subtitles will likely be included.
Open casting calls have been coordinated in both countries to scout qualified prospects -- October 20 in London, England, and October 27 in Chicago, Illinois.
Of course, tonight marks the debut of TUF 8 on Spike TV, which features 16 up-and-coming lightweights and light heavyweights, as well as coaches Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and Frank Mir.
For additional details and information visit UFC.com and Spike.com for future updates, as well as stay tuned to MMAmania.com.

there are only a few good fighters from the UK and one of them is Michael Bisping the US has Frank Mir, Cung Le who was born in America, Chuck Lidell, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Quintin Jackson, Rashad Evens, among many others do they really think the UK stands a chance against the US

As an english man and an mma fighter i feel we have a great chance! who cares if there are 300 million Americans and only 60 mill British! we have enough great fighters to compete! with natural grit, determination, and never give up attitude we are tough oppenants to anyone who stands infront of us!
where do i sign?

No offence to the UK but they do not have the same calibre schools as you are going to find like Xtreme Couture or American Top Time, even BTT and Chute Boxe are ahead.
I hope they are extremely careful with the casting and matchups in this situation, so that it doesn’t turn into a one sided affair.
by DirtyML on Sep 17, 2008 10:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There will be only one way to find out. You are probably right that there is not as many established schools over here but there are some good up and coming fighters and the competition will be very good for them to push themselves.
Personally I think it should have been USA vs Europe as america has five times more people (300 million to UK’s 60 million) together with the fact that MMA is more established in the US but Dana wouldn’t have put it together if he didn’t feel it would be competitive so we’ll have to wait and see. I know he is trying to build a market in the UK so that is one reason he would like to do it. Europe have a lot of good fighters from Holland, France and eastern europe etc especially in these weight classes and it would have made it more competitive.
The UFC have signed a few very good fighters recently from the U.K which will be on the UFC89 card that could have been potentials for the show but one definately springs to mind in Paul Daley but Im not too sure about his commitments to Elite XC.
Should be interesting to see what comes from this though.

we have some talented guys over hear but need that extra push and are wrestling is almost non existent . i hope we do alright but us does have some awesome trianers and facilitys plus ithink this is a bit gimmick to try and put it on a terestrial channel (like yours cbs and nbc channels ) but any exposure is good exposure i guess

I am British and agree we would get killed.
Should be usa vs Europe. I mean UK is tiny comapred to USA and the level of mma is much higher in usa at moment.
Its a bit like saying usa vs rest of world at soccer!

Number one, we can barely beat countries like Trinidad-Tobago in soccer (and their team has full time jobs in addition to playing). lol We SUCK, at least in men’s soccer. 2. I always prefer country vs country matchups if anything. We get too much of that U.S.A. vs the world hollywood cr@p over here, yet another reason a lot of people hate Americans, IMO. It just seems so arrogant, that I can’t watch any of that stuff w/o rooting against my own nation. Makes me a little sick to do that too.
by chefdaddy on Sep 18, 2008 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Although I’d love to see my country take centre stage and its probably more about the marketing than the fights I think it would have been much better to have USA vs Brazil….maybe Dana would like a Hollywood ending where the Americans win in the end thats why he went for UK instead!

Unbelievable – Is that a slate on the uk participants after the bisping and pointon subtitles. News for ufc – we invented the f’in language LOL – I know UK is losing its grip as a big international player but saying we cant even speak our own language means we really are a nation in decline !!!!!

Billy Boy your not even English! calling footy soccer?? Billy Boy sort your self out! We might not have the numbers or the facilities but we’ve got the hart
by Evilp on Jan 13, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Surely the subtitles are so we (the English) can understand what the Americans are saying.
If the USA can’t understand what we’re saying then they need to go back to school and learn OUR language better.

Watch out for Jim Wallhead to lead the UK Welterweights if he makes it past the trials
He’s the best unsigned British Welterweight and trains with Dan Hardy and Paul Daley. A two time British champion and won the 2006 2h2h Road To Japan Tournament on 72 hours notice in a higher weight class. Plus he’s beaten 2 UFC vets already

U.S. vs UK? boring, we all know the U.S. will win, Brazil wouldve been a cool matchup. As for the UK, im not even sure they would win if it was UK vs. California, much less the entire US

Derrick i really hope we kick usa’s asses now mate, we might only have a smaller population than the usa but trust me never count us out we’ve got some very tough fighters over here and chances are youve never seen any of them fight or even any of our events so to make an uninformed jugdement is pretty dumb, but then you are american so its normal for you to make a dumb comment.
by eddie on Feb 15, 2009 4:49 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
wether from uk or america to get in there you got to have balls and a lot of heart, easy for people on the outside watching to comment and criticise makin wrongful judgments. i compete in mma and have competed in boxing for many years and still active now. you carnt simply make a judgment in mma as fights can change ways and be ended in seconds shud a mistake by made giving yor oponent an oportunity they will 99% take it. i wud like to see these people who say fighters arent good actually fight that person in concern as ther will only be 1 winner. fighting is all down to who is best on the night between the 2 fighters, you dont bring yor A game yor in for a hard night, a prime example of outside hype. . joe calzaghe. enuf said from the americans. fists do the talking in ther and people watching have no idea who will win !!!!!!
