Renzo Gracie to star in documentary featured at U.S. Sports Film Festival

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and MMA legend Renzo Gracie will be featured in a documentary titled "Renzo Gracie: Legacy" at the inaugural U.S. Sports Film Festival in Philadelphia, Pa., during its three-day run from October 23 to 26.

Gracie (13-6-1) last competed at Elite XC: "Destiny" where he defeated Frank Shamrock via disqualification. Shammy felt it was necessary to drive his knees into Gracie's head while he was on the ground despite being warned by referee Herb Dean regarding an earlier infraction involving the back of the head.

Gracie is perhaps best known for his battles with Dan Henderson and Kazushi Sakuraba back in the days of PRIDE Fighting Championship.

From festival founder and President Stephan Hartman:

"Given MMA's rising popularity worldwide and its recent approval for competition in the state of Pennsylvania, the debut of the life story of such a living legend as Renzo Gracie was a perfect fit."

A member of the legendary Gracie family, he is the son of Robson Gracie, grandson of Carlos Gracie, nephew of Carlos Gracie Jr. and grand-nephew of Helio Gracie. His brothers Ralph and the late Ryan Gracie were also competitors in PRIDE.

UPDATE: Check out the documentary video trailer after the jump.

Dude, who cares that Renzo lost…that is the greatest quote in MMA history. Renzo won in life just because he had the guts to say that. lol

I’ll never forget when ShoXC tried to feed him to Frank Shamrock for their premiere show’s main event…Renzo put on a clinic against Frank and was demolishing him until the illegal knees to the back of the head. Or what about his bout with Pat Militech where he finished him with a standing rear-naked-choke! Fond memories.

I’ve never really been a fan of the Militech camp so I was glad when Renzo choked him out

I wouldn’t exactly describe Renzo Gracie as a legend of MMA. His record isn’t really that good. And that fight with Frank Shamrock was a shocker. Whilst it was technically illegal to knee Gracie in the back of the head, you have to remember that both fighters were actually on the ground and that Frank was on his back, with Renzo on top. The physics of a knee to the head in that situation are totally different to a knee delivered, say, from a standing position to a fighter on his knees – i.e. not as powerful. I honestly believe that Renzo could have continued, but chose not to for the easy win.

If you want a legend of MMA, you pick one of these guys:

Rickson Gracie
Royce Gracie
Frank Shamrock
Ken Shamrock
Tito Ortiz
Bas Rutten
Randy Couture
Fedor

Renzo is a MMA Legend.

I read in between the lines..

Look at his win over Oleg for ex.. he was totally under sized for that fight.. but KO’d Oleg .. with the up kick from the guard.. Renzo in the modern MMA era to utilize the up kick from the guard.. then everybody started trying it in MMA.

I look at his Legacy from a different perspective than others.. it’s not his record.. it’s his life in general.. he is partly to blame for the BJJ expantion in the US.. along side his family.. When you say " Renzo ".. you know it’s Gracie.. but not just any Gracie.. a pioneer of the sport of BJJ and MMA.

We can’t forget the time he kicked Nate Marquardt in the head after Nate went after one of Renzo’s fighter’s when the match was over.

he is a legend, and almost everyfight he was the smaller man

by roy on Sep 16, 2008 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope they show when he kicked Nate Marquardt in the face after the Marquardt/Almeida fight.

by the_mexicutioner on Sep 16, 2008 9:07 AM EDT reply actions

Why did he do that.. after Nate tapped.. he went to go punch Almeida in the face.. but Renzo was already going into the ring..and put his knee in Nate’s face.. and that was good for him. Nate shouldn’t of punched Almeida..after Almeida let go of the choke. Renzo did the right thing.

by PhilQNY on Sep 16, 2008 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Calm down, Phil. All I said was I hoped they showed it. But since you leave out the fact that Almeida held on to the choke longer than he should have after the tap and the ref had to pull is arm off Marquardt, I’ll tell you my thoughts on it: No one was right in this situation. Almeida shouldn’t have held on for so long after the ref called it, Marquardt shouldn’t have hit Almeida, and Renzo shouldn’t have kicked Nate. I like Renzo a lot as well, but they were all wrong.

yeah theyll all shook hand like 2 seconds after it happened though so i think they realized the same thing

by brendan on Sep 16, 2008 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Renzo Gracie is a snatch. Lost all respect forhim after he kiked Nate Marquardt after his fight with Almeida. I don’t care what anyone says, the guy shouldn’t be known as a legendary fighter but as a coach that’s trained many successful fighters. Just none that were high-profile champions..

A snatch? Nice!
