DREAM 6 fight card finalized with the addition of legends & all-stars

DREAM Entertainment has finalized the main card for the conclusion of its middleweight grand prix at DREAM 6 on September 23 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event will air live stateside on HDNet.

Added today is practically a who's-who of Japanese legends & all-stars including Keita "K-taro" Nakamura (14-3-2), Ikuhisa "Minowaman" Minowa (40-28-8), Masakatsu Funaki (38-13-1), Atsushi Yamamoto (11-5-1) and Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (32-8-2).

It will be interesting to see if Sakurai and Nakamura can rebound from their disappointing losses earlier this year. "Mach" was upset by David Baron at Shooto back in May while "K-Taro" lost a split-decision against Rob Emerson at February's UFC 81.

Plenty of fans will be cheering for Minowa vs. Funaki, who combined may have fought every mixed martial artist on the planet - except each other. Both fighters came up short in their appearances at DREAM 2.

In heavyweight action, former PRIDE superstar and UFC jetsam Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (23-6-2) will finally attempt to silence current Strikeforce heavyweight champion and perennial trash-talker Alistair Overeem (28-11).

"Demolition Man" — who submitted Mark Hunt last month at DREAM 5 — has accused the Croatian of ducking him on more than one occasion - and of being a ‘douchebag’.

Star-divide

If that weren’t enough, Saitamaniacs will also be treated to the much-anticipated return of Russian gladiator Sergei Kharitonov. The 15-3 ‘Kharit-top’ has been homeless since pounding out Alistair Overeem at K-1 Heroes nearly a year ago but does hold victories over some of the bigger names in MMA, including current UFC title contender Fabricio Werdum.

His opponent will be none other than Siala "Mighty Mo" Siligia (3-0). Like Kharitonov, Siligia was last victorious at K-1 Heroes after a first-round mutilation of Ruben "Warpath" Villereal.

Don’t let the 3-0 record fool you: Mo knows fighting. Aside from MMA, Siligia is an accomplished kickboxer with a devastating overhand right that he calls "The Right Hand of God".

Concluding the middleweight grand prix is tournament favorite "Marvelous" Melvin Manhoef (22-4-1) who will be facing Jurojin pupil Gerard Mousasi (22-2-1). Manhoef is coming off a devastating TKO win over Japanese icon Kazushi Sakuraba at DREAM 4 back in June and is the winner of five straight - all by (T)KO.

He won’t have a free pass however as the "Armenian Assassin" Mousasi has been on something of a tear himself. Like Manhoef, Mousasi is also a perfect 2-0 in DREAM competition, including his opening round upset over potential tournament finalist Denis Kang at DREAM 2 earlier this year.

The winner of Manhoef vs. Mousasi will have the unenviable task of facing either Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (9-1) or Zelg "Benkei" Galesic (9-3), who face off in classic striker vs. grappler match. Souza earned his spot in June by outpointing Jason "Mayhem" Miller at DREAM 4 while Galesic bagged and tagged Taiei Kin and the same event.

Former PRIDE tomato Dong Sik Yoon (4-5) and Brazil’s Andrews Nakahara (0-1) round out the grand prix with their reserve bout. Both fighters came up short in their last DREAM appearances but will try to use this opportunity to sneak into the finals.

Also added to the card is a featherweight bout pitting the new and improved Hideo Tokoro (21-13-1) against Shooto and Pancrase veteran Atsushi Yamamoto (11-5-1). Tokoro was victorious in both of his DREAM appearances, recently defeating Takeshi Yamazaki at DREAM 5. Yamamoto is coming off a decision loss to Masakatsu Ueda at Shooto 8 back in January despite a strong performance.

Here is the official fight card for DREAM 6:

Main Card:
Keita "K-taro" Nakamura (14-3-2) vs. Adriano Martins (9-3)
Ikuhisa "Minowaman" Minowa (40-28-8) vs. Masakatsu Funaki (38-13-1)
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (32-8-2) vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka (12-5)
Yoshihiro Akiyama (11-1) vs. Masanori Tonooka (1-1)
Mirko "Crocop" Filipovic (23-6-2) vs. Alistair "Demolition Man" Overeem (28-11)
Sergei Kharitonov (15-3) vs. Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga (3-0)
Hideo Tokoro (21-13-1) vs. Atsushi Yamamoto (11-5-1)

Middleweight Grand Prix Reserve Bout:
Yoon Dong Sik (4-5) vs. Andrews Nakahara (0-1)

Middleweight Grand Prix Semi-Finals:
"Marvelous" Melvin Manhoef (22-4-1) vs. Gegard "Armenian Assassin" Mousasi (22-2-1)
Zelg "Benkei" Galesic (9-3) vs. Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (9-1)

Middleweight Grand Prix Final:
Winner of Manhoef/Mousasi vs. winner of Galesic/Souza

With so many names and histories, DREAM 6 looks to be an amazing night of fights. If a card of this magnitude cannot save the struggling promotion, nothing can. Here's to hoping!

Best card of the year. UFC 90/91 are neck and neck, but I give the slight edge to DREAM 6’s explosive and dynamic matchups!! WAR MANHOEF!!!!

Best friggin card of the year! I’m kickin myself for not being able to attend in person.

I know I am a DREAMer (sry for that one), but I believe Zelg will make it into the finals and from there on everything is possible.

Funaki has fought Frank and Ken Shamrock, Bas Rutten, Kazushi Sakuraba and Rickson Gracie. Who else can say that? Love that guy…

Funaki is a Legend!

I wish they would have gotten Akiyama a better opponent.
I hope that Minowa-man got rid of the mullet and sppedo, after all this is 2008!

Jesse, have you heard anything about Sakuraba vs. Royce, NYE the rubber match?

Oh I cant wait for this one. I always really look forward to the Dream events, probably even moreso than most UFC cards as they are usually inconsistent with only 2-3 fights worth watching.

This card will have some absolute wars and may even eclipse the last 2 amazing cards Dream have put on!

It will a terrible shame if this organisation folded for not getting the attention / ticket sales it rightly deserves.

by Ca$z on Sep 12, 2008 5:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I also look forward to dream more so than the UFC. I just love the fighters, the atmosphere, fans.

I cant wait for this night of action and I cant wait to see my boy, Jacre win it all!

by john on Sep 12, 2008 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

REALLY looking forward to this event. Starting at 2am on a Tuesday night is not the best time slot for us in the US, so I usually record them when they first air, which was typically on Sundays. However, I think that for this event, I my be simply planning on calling out of work the next day so that I can stay up and watch this on live!!!!

I want to see Overeem BEAT DOWN Cro Cop

by ViolentMike on Sep 12, 2008 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be great to see!

VM: I have yet to hear any predictyions out of you as to who will win the grand prix. Your thoughts?

by john on Sep 12, 2008 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Mousasi to pull the upset! Otherwise, I am leaning towards your boy, whom you are the biggest American fan of, JACARE!

I haven’t seen DREAM odds on BetUs yet. The last event was up there. Hopefully it goes up at least a couple days before the event

by ViolentMike on Sep 12, 2008 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, Not again!

I think MOussassi will beat Manhoeff but loose to Jacre in the finals.

I have been looking for the odds, but I havent found them anywhere yet. I imagine that by the time the event rolls around odds will be offered!

DREAM events are hidden gems for anyone that has not seen one. They have all been well put together and it saddens me that they are tanking and they could come to an end. The LW tourney was incredible and they had some very serious firepower in terms of fighters. DREAM 5 was absolutely insane…lots of great fights. I think Aoki threw every single sub attempt known to man on Uno and Uno survided all of them. If you know Aoki then you know his subs are slick and tight. Eddie Alvarez really came into his own during the tourney and really put himself on the map as a serious top 10 LW. His fight against Hansen was fight of the year in my opinion. If you haven’t seen it…then I suggest you look for it. I really hope we get to see Hansen/Alvarez 2 for the title since Alvarez deserves his shot for not being defeated during the tournament.

I’m hoping to see Cro Cop destroy Overeem. Maybe I’m being a little nostalgic but I’d like to see Cro Cop make a comeback before he hangs his gloves up. I’m hoping he wins and Kharitonov wins and then they can face each other.

As far as this tourney goes…I have to go with Jacare. I hope he faces Manhoef in the finals…that would be a solid match. Manhoef has done well for himself during the tournament and he beat Sakuraba down badly last round.

I’d almost like to see DREAM fold only because I’d like to see all the guys from DREAM fall into the UFC somehow. I’d love to see Mayhem Miller back in the UFC and these middleweights would go a long way to rejuvinating the division. I start to salivate and drool like Pavlov’s dogs thinking about all the possible matchups.

Regarding the reserve bout, dont let Yoon Dong Sik’s losing record of 4-5 fool you. The guy is VERY good. He started his career 0-4 losing to the likes of Sakuraba, Rampage and Maurilo Bustamante. Then he fought in that K1 event that Brock Lesnar made his debut againt Min Soo Kim. Yoon Dong fought Melvin Manhoeff. DONGY got the first win of his career against someone that was supposed to be a stud in the MW division.

1. Overeem is Euro-trash and a total d-dag.
2. UFC doesn’t need all of the good fighters in the world, they do not have the capabilities to show them all and
3. The Asian fighters would go to Sengoku and Shooto (omfg Imanari vs. Kid!!) and the American ones, like Alvarez and Daiz are also signed to EliteXC.

by Condilezza Rice on Sep 12, 2008 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I honestly don’t believe that any of these fighters will be able to beat Jacre. THe best they can do is survive. I am a fan of Manhoeff, Benkie and the armenian, but Jacre is a different kind of BEAST. His submission game is so good, and so aggressive, I have never seen anything like it.

Buster brought up Aoki vs. Uno where Aoki attempted every sub in the book. Well same thing happened when Jacre fought Mayhem. Fighters wont be able to even attempt to mount an offense against Jacre because they have to constantly defend from getting their limbs ripped off. IMO, the only question about when Jacre fighst is, how will he submit you? Making it to a decision against him has to be a serious moral victory. Only problem with Jacre against Mayhem will be his conditioning, I am sure that will be corrected come SEptember 23, especially because he will potentially have to fight twice in 1 night. Jacre is the NEXT BIG thing. He trains with Extreme Couture and Wanderlei, I dont think he will be denied his grand prix title!

btw, VM is right about Pork Fried Rice, lol
Dont let his record fool you, he is a very tough guy who can make some noise if some injuries occur.

your so right buster, every dream event so far has been top notch. i love it when talk trash and yell ufc, they don’t know what there missing.

anyone know what Benkie means?

by john on Sep 12, 2008 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

^^ If Overeem is Euro-trash, than so is CroCop.

I wish Akiyama weren’t fighting an apparent can, seeing as he has wins over Manhoef and Kang. I hope Cro Cop gets KTFO by some knees from Overeem. Minowa and Funaki should be an good match-up, but aside from the tournament, I’m looking forward most to the Hironaka-Sakurai bout, should be great.

What a great card, should be a great event.
