Fedor Emelianenko to compete at Affliction's revamped 'Day of Reckoning' card for January 2009

Not since Jonathan Lansdale has a man had so much trouble with his hand.
Affliction headliner and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko is set to return to action at the recently reconstructed fight card for Affliction 'Day of Reckoning' in January 2009 according to NBC Sports.
Emelianenko was kept off the original 'Reckoning' card (previously scheduled for October 11 in Las Vegas) due to a serious hand injury - the second of his career - until some undermining by "unknown" meddlers forced Affliction officials to abandon The Thomas & Mack Center - and the home of the UFC - for a more welcome atmosphere.
The postponement and subsequent transfer to Affliction's home base of California may cost them money up front, but it may also bring greater reward with the inclusion of Emelianenko. That's not to imply that Andrei Arlovski vs Josh Barnett isn't a solid main event - it is, but the T-shirt giant didn't shell out millions to have its marquee player riding the bench.
Emelianenko does not yet have an opponent, but it's not unrealistic to think of the crowned prince of Combat Sambo facing Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski. The two were set to do battle in October before the hand injury sidelined Emelianenko.
While all of the combatants on the original 'Day of Reckoning' card are expected to compete in January, there may be some minor changes after the addition of Emelianenko.
From Affliction Vice-President Tom Atencio:
"It is to be determined. We are considering changing the combatants. We have not finalized that at this time. That is as a result of the issues to be revealed at the announcement."
Affliction is also preparing to make a blockbuster announcement about the future of the promotion during Boxing's big lightweight title fight between Joel Casamayor and Juan Manuel Marquez, which will air on HBO pay-per-view (PPV) in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, September 13.
Fedor is here and Randy is gone, so that takes care of the obvious. For now, all we can do is speculate: MMA on HBO? Tito vs. Fedor? A Japanese alliance?

im waiting for what all the fighters have to say. i heard mr. arlovski wasnt to happy about hearing that his fight was cancelled/postponed through the media and not Affliction themselves 10 weeks into his training camp. training camps are’nt cheap according to tito. i would like to hear what all the scheduled fighters for octobers event think about not fighting, including mr.barnett, who is not one to mince words. i would also like to know what fedors management thinks about fedor fighting in jan, when you know they are going for nye in japan. where’s donald trump during all this?

No kidding. Attencio – “Hey what’s-yer-name, oh right, Josh, um you know that main event fight against the Pit Bull? Welllll….”. If they don’t handle Barnett properly, he’s going to murder them in the MMA media. Although he does have that fat paycheck from his latest pro wrestling “match” in Japan to cushion the blow.
Definitely curious to find out how this affects the whole new hears eve freak show fight for Fedor.
I think Trump is (was?) just a fancy hood ornament for affliction. I believe he’s been known to “rent” out the Trump name for a piece of the action.
And now we’ve got this Dana White like, “big announcement” on Saturday to figure out. Crazy day.

well, I guess this is good news! Yes we have to wait til January but the card will be better and that is very important. The next event has to be done right, they need to put their best foot forward and that wasnt going to happen with the Oct. 11 show!
At this point I dont care if its Fedor vs. Arlovski or Fedor vs. Barnett, I am happy to see either fight.
Hopefully Sylvia vs. LeBanner gets added to the card, or they can always just let Barnett Destroy Sylvia!
Believe it or not, I really find myself wanting to see Babalu vs. Tito.
Now that its pushed back to January I have to assume that the match is back on between:

Fedor should fight someone else like Crocop assuming crocop beats overeem otherwise overeem would be a great fight! Then after he wins he can face the winner of AA vs Josh(more then likely josh).
But it is very interesting whats gonna happen with Fedor in japan he wants to fight NYE as always, so maybe a sambo match? I wouldnt mind that.

Keep in mind that Fedor was called out at this past Olympics by the heavyweight gold medalist Judoka from Japan. That would be a HUGE fight in Japan that the Japanese people will want to see. If he does continue with his NYE tradition in Japan, I have to think that it will be against the Japanese Judoka

Fedor v Arlovski? That match does have merit, but it isn’t the one that I want to see. Fedor’s next match should be against Josh Barnett. Christ knows Fedor ducked Barnett enough times in PRIDE…

Thank God someone else knows how deserving Barnett is, especially compared to Arlovskis last four mediocre performances. I was expecting to see a bunch of Arlovski vs. Fedor comments but I am quite pleased. In response to Brendan, Fedor would NOT destroy Overeem and you have nothing to back that. Overeem will in fact quickly dismantle Cro Cop and put him into his overdue retirement. Fedor vs Overeem or Kharitonov would be almost as exciting as a fight with Barnett..

I think that you are ranking Alistar a little too high buddy! I find alistar to be a very entertaining fighter but If i am going to keep it real, he usually looses his fights against top notch opponents. Thats why he has never been in the top 10

they used to train together at the Russian Top Team, before they robbed Fedor and he switched over to the Red Devil Fight team.
Dont know how they feel about fighting each oother. Then again Aleks fought Sergei so it probably wouldnt be a problem

Fedor and Barnette were on a card to fight in PRIDE.
It wasn’t Fedor that ducked out, it was Barnette and they had to replace Barnette.
.. This hasn’t been the first time either that Fedor has had opponent’s back out from a card fight either.

As others have pointed out, Chad Dawson vs. Antonio Tarver (boxing) takes place in Vegas on Oct 11. The UFC might be able to go head-to-head with a big boxing event, but not Affliction. The boxing event is scheduled to take place at The Pearl Theatre at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. I think Affliction was going to have a difficult time going head-to-head with a huge boxing event. I doubt that the UFC had anything to do with their reschedule of Affliction.2.

I think that Afflication alone may already have a better HW division than the UFC, but they’re weak everywhere else. to say that an Affliction/DREAM merger would be more rounded than the UFC is just silly. It would take an Affliction/DREAM/EliteXC/Strikeforce merger for the complete roster to maybe (MAYBE) compare with the UFC from top-to-bottom.

the ufc has an awful middleweight and heavyweight divisions and mediocre welter, middle and light. their only real outstanding division is 205. No one complains about ww, lw, and mw because GSP, BJ, and the Spider are all super talented.

The MW division is not nearly as bad as you think, it’s just that Anderson Spider Silva is that much better than everybody else right now. Bring in any other MW in the world, and they would get crushed by Franklin, Henderson and Marquardt.

nog fedor barnett i consider the best HW’s based on their fights.
other top dogs IMO are Arlovski, Schilt, Sylvia, Werdum, Gonzaga, Kharitonov.
Couture I really wonder about because of his age.
