Spencer Fisher vs Shannon Gugerty UFC 90 fight set with Melvin Guillard out

Spencer Fisher (21-4) will take on Shannon Gugerty (11-2) -– not Melvin Guillard as originally planned -- at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25, according to the CEO of K.O. Dynasty Sports Mgt., Mickey Dubberly.
No reason is known at this time for the opponent switch, but it appears on the surface to be a much safer fight for "The King."
Then again ... who really knows in this sport.
Fisher is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 Finale in June. The Miletich Fighting Systems veteran has won two of his last four bouts, including a rematch against Sam Stout at UFC Fight Night 10 more than one year ago.
He is a former 155-pound contender. And he’ll need to put together back-to-back wins to prove that he still belongs among the division’s elite.
Gugerty made his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin," submitting fellow newcomer Dale Hartt with a rear naked choke in round one. It marked the eighth straight win for the Total Combat promotion veteran who has finished more than 70 percent of his professional fights by way of submission.
In fact, Gugerty has not lost a bout since meeting up with Cub Swanson back in 2006.

When are they going to have the Fisher/Lauzon fight? Fisher had a beef with Lauzon because Lauzon beat Jens and Spencer wanted to fight him to get revenge or some bullshit like that, but it never happened.

I thought the feud was because Spencer beat Joe’s brother Dan; regardless, a J-Lau/King Fisher fight sounds like a good potential match-up to me.

He did beat Dan, but Spencer was the one making the beef because Joe beat Jens. It was a bunch of drama.

I’m lost as to the reasoning behind matching up Spencer with non-contenders with he’s clearly proven himself as worthy of the upper rankings @ 155. The King will likely show his power and skill again by posting a solid W.

Exactly. He has proven himself again and again. What’s with this ‘he has to prove himself’ rhetoric? I call BS.

Right. Spencer should NOT be fighting UFC newbies.

yeah, this match up just sucks! It went from a great match up to this? Hardly a worthy replacement!
His opponent beat Dale Hartt who will be fighting Cory Hill at the DEcember 10th UFN event at the military base on Spike!

Huerta vs Fisher would be a good match up.
by the_mexicutioner on Sep 9, 2008 4:32 PM EDT reply actions
Huerta and Melvin already fought. Melvin won, but it was overturned to a No Contest because Melvin was excessively and illegally greased.

“excessively and illegally greased” LOL thats what she said

Matt Hammils trainer threw him under the bus after his lackluster performance against Franklin. Its a great read. Here is a clip:
“He had absolutely no fighting spirit, no killer instinct. He looked like a shell of himself and was just out there to get through it and that is very disconcerting."

i wouldnt say he threw him under the bus. i read the whole interview on fightline yesterday and duff said that matt didnt do anything that they had practiced and seemed to be to respectfull of rich and their friendship. hamill rarely went for the takedown, even though his corner pleaded with him to do so between rounds. rich had something to do with this, but hamill did appear to underperform. his trainer said hamill just had a blank stare in his eyes and looked obliviuos. having a trainer say that a fighter didnt do what they went over zelously during training and questioning his desire isnt exactly “throwing him under the bus”. he was just being honest about if this is what hamill REALLY wants to do. you cant be a nice guy in the cage and expect to win.

espcially against rich “Applewhite/Heavens Gate” Franklin, lol i still cant get over that comparison…

yeah, even if it was true, I dont think a fighters trainer has any business saying that to the media. Say it to the fighter behind close dorrs. Making it public is kind of like throwing him under the bus. iMO

I’d like to see Fisher vs. Frankie Edgar, Cole Miller or Rob Emerson, or hell…even a rematch with Matt Wiman who’s turning out to be quite the stud lately. But yeah, if Pat Miletich was originally complaining that Guillard wasn’t a high-enough level opponent for Spencer, what’s his justification for accepting the fight with Gugerty?
by Scott on Sep 9, 2008 8:17 PM EDT reply actions
Damn! I wanted to see my boy Guillard destroy Fisher and continue climbing that lightweight ladder.
by Anthony on Sep 9, 2008 11:54 PM EDT reply actions
I have to admit. I wanted Melvin to win too. I wonder why we won’t be seeing him fight?
by RyanHobbs on Sep 9, 2008 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions
wow some actual Guillard fans… only good thing about guillard is that he doesnt go to decisions, in just about every other way possible i cant stand the guy
by brendan on Sep 10, 2008 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions
haha i just like his knockout power. plus he has showed signs of maturity as of lately.
