Chuck Liddell vs Anderson Silva: Who wants to see it?

"Chuck you now look like the drunken frat guy at a party who hit on the wrong guy's girl and ended up on queer street.... There's now speculation that Liddell will try to get his cred back by challenging Anderson Silva. Chuck, my man, if you got any sense and you don't want to end up nose flat on the mat, you'd be wise to stay as far away from The Spider as possible."
-- Jim Rome running his mouth on ESPN's "Rome is Burning" program today about the apparent "speculation" that Chuck Liddell wants a piece of UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva in a superfight now that his chances of recapturing the 205-pound bout anytime soon are all but dashed. Personally, I doubt Liddell is pursuing any fight so soon after his most recent defeat. He was knocked out cold this past weekend by Rashad Evans, which marked the third loss in his four most recent fights -- a far cry from the clout he wielded just prior to the second loss to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in 2007. Options are limited at this time for the "Iceman," however, making a fight with Silva certainly is a possibility because it would be a cash cow. A trip up to heavyweight wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Whatever it is ... something needs to change.

I would still like to see the fight, and if Chuck does win, he could retire and a real High note.

Becuase he’s lost 3 out of his last 4. and he’s old, hendo is older as well, but he’s the only hope of beating the spider at 185.

That’s right, Randy Couture said “all fighters lose its how they learn from those losses that makes them a great fighter”. Anyone with a heart beat can be knocked out and Chuck needs to learn that dropping your guard and exposing your jaw isn’t a wise strategy. He has a lot left in him just needs to think a bit more. Have a look at the replay, Rashad isn’t even looking where he was punching, he just through a punch and hoped it landed. Good punch and a lot of luck.

mrpotato – Evans trained that specific overhand right for months before the fight. He knew exactly where that punch would land. The only way to throw the overhand right like that is to lean to one side. It hit its mark exactly like he intended. It’s very similar to Couture’s overhand punches of Sylvia. They found their mark because he specifically trained for those. Not luck. Skill, speed and an excellent sense of timing.
Let’s face it: Rashad Evans looked twice as fast as Chuck Liddell in every aspect of his game on Saturday night.

I doubt that Chuck would retire after beating Anderson Silva. He even said at the press conference that his goal is still to get the belt back. It hasn’t really seemed to break his spirit.

I doubt Chuck is thinking about this right now. Yea, maybe moving to a different weight class, but not fighting Silva at the moment. I’m sure he’s only looking at what is derectly ahead of him at the moment.

UFC signs very tough, heavy handed Italian light heavyweight Ivan Serati (10-2).
Serati is a veteran of cage rage. 1 of his 2 losses came at the hands of a Vitor Belfort KO in cage rage.

hey John, according to tatame, lyoto has been officially scratched from UFC 89, they couldn’t get anybody else in there to face him :(
He says he already went back to train in his base art (karate with kimono lol). the dude says he only trains with more MMA before a bout… He also said he was surprised with rashad, but that griffen will keep the title in their bout.

As much i have disliked lidell, chucky would knock anderson out (tongue in cheek). guys we have not seen anderson fight a true power puncher like wanderlei or lidell (yet). anderson is great but i have been wanting to see anderson fight one of those guys so i can become a TRUE believer like all of you! (i honestly do want to become a believer). i am just one of the very very few who think anderson has no doubt had a good run and has a mystique BUT against a so so division in my eyes. it wasnt until hendo jumped on that i considered it his 1st true challenge, and from seeing hendo througout his career, it wasnt the same hendo i was used to seeing when he foought him. I will keep saying it, but not until he fights a machida, wanderlei, lidell, rampage, SHOGUN will believe completely. And im really hoping he proves me wrong haha…

by Toms Bombs on Sep 9, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m pretty sure that even Rampage was quoted saying that James Irvin punches just as hard as anyone in that division. Irvin didn’t really land anything, but he has faced a fighter with heavy hands. Theres no way to know who really hits the hardest though. Houston Alexander could even hit the hardest.

No way to know for sure, but I think it is safe to say that Liddell is up there.
by naturalshadow on Sep 10, 2008 4:06 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We do know that Henderson hits harder than Chuck. Watch the Hendo v Silva and then watch Liddell v Silva. Liddell hit Silva with everything but the kitchen sink and still could not knock him out but Hendo did it with a lot less effort. I think this is a good example of who is the harder puncher out of Hendo or Liddel. Obviously if a fighter doesn’t expect or see a punch coming that does make a difference. But serously Liddell hammered Silva with som heavy solid shots and then had to resort to going for takedowns probably because his knuckles were hurting him.

Ade- I guess Keith Jardine hits harder than Rampage because he knocked out Forrest Griffin and Rampage went to a 5 round decision with him. MMA math….never adds up quite right.
by RyanHobbs on Sep 10, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You do not need MMA math to determine which fighter hits harder, it all depends on the circumstances. I know that there are a lot of other deciding factors, but I gave the Hendo / Liddell example, because as far as I was concerned that was a good indication. We did see Chuck connect with plenty of solid shots to Silva, and not manage to knock him out. I do not recollect Rampage managing to give Forrest the same barrage of pucnches that Jardine managed to connect with when knocking out Forrest, so you cannot make the same assumption with Jardine and Rampage.
by Ade on Sep 10, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You mean a power puncher like Irvin or Hendo for example ? Who are known for their severly heavy hands ?
Liddell’s kryptonite is against someone with solid boxing.. Anderson will literally pick him apart. I’m a huge Chuck fan & A. Silva fan, but the truth is the truth and facts are the facts.. Not to mention A. Silva is a southpaw. If you think Rashad was quick and frustrated Chuck by hopping around… A. Silva will do worse.. He’ll dance around and pick him apart with leg kicks and then close the distance and open up on Chuck the second he drops that left hand looking for the big right.. A. Silva by beating him to the punch..

There’s a difference between pampering and showing respect. However, I agree that Chuck doesn’t need to be pursuing a fight with badASS (Anderson Spider Silva) right now. He just got knocked out by Sugar, and he needs no part of Spider. IMO, he needs to decide either to get in great shape and go start fighting guys like Bisping or Leben at 185, or stay fat and move up to HW.

The problem isnt that Chuck got KO’ed by Rashad, its that in all honesty Chuck has not looked like the Chuck of his Prime. its been a long time since Chuck Ko’ed anyone.. Props for beating Wanderlei, but I think wandy would Axe Murder Chuck in a re-match! He lost to Jardine, got Ko’ed by Rampage.
Chuck either needs to change strategy, become less predictable, or forget his title hopes and just be content on fighting top names in the sport like Franklin or Hendo to earn big bucks like someone suggested earlier!

Its totally true tho. That is what happened. I even posted about it prior to the fight. I stated something along the lines of Chuck losing because of it. It might have also had something to do with the fact that he was getting interviewed at his training camp as well. Every time I see that… the fighter loses. Its like a curse or something.
The fact of the matter is, Chucky, thought Rashad would be an easy matchup and took him lightly. How many times did we see posters saying that Rashad was a waste of a fight and all that? I thought the same thing. But when you get the surprise of your life… it doesnt mean you are done.
It really amazes me how quick people are to turn on a fighter. They all lose… thats a given. I have a new respect for Rashad now. I didnt lose respect for Chucky, I think he will finally get back to being serious again. I hope!

I think Rome knows sports, a little anyways (Baseball). But whether he does or not, he comes across as someone who tries to get people stirred up, just reading what his writers put on the teleprompter. And I believe he’s the dumb@ss who came up with the “War whoever” statement. That alone diminishes credibility. Sure kevin, he talks a little about MMA, but he sure doesn’t “pump” it. The sad fact of the matter is that I could do his part on the show about MMA better than he could (and you know that’s SCARY). he’s just more of a ranter and raver, hype, not much substance. But that’s just my opinion, he does have a tv show after all. Does that show he’s doing something right, or that the masses are id*ots?

Jim Rome speaks his mind pretty candidly. But i listened to his entire show as i do everyday and without being a regular listener, many of you (most of you) took this out of context.
While it does sound bad, Rome did also pay his respect to Liddell, as he knows that Chuck is a badass (and made a cameo on his favorite tv show Entourage)and Chuck has been on Romes show before as well.
As for Chuck i think he should stay down for a bit…it worked wonders for Couture.
by Nelly on Sep 9, 2008 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont think Chuck should stay down a bit, he was just out of action for 9 months nearly….if he waited another year to compete he would be like 2 months away from 40!! I think he just needs to start using more tools instead of the right hand. Fuk, did anyone remember the kick he threw at Rashad’s head at the end of the first round? I say he should have been doing that all night, if one of those kicks landed I bet Rashad would have gone down. SO what if Rashad happened to catch Chuck and take him down if he missed a kick, its not like Chuck couldnt have gottenr ight back up. Also, Rashad was expecting Chuck to stand and strike and CHuck KNEW this, he shoudl have pulled out a takedown like he did against Wanderlei, Chuck could have easily handled himself against Rashad on the ground.
Point is, Chuck was just sloppy against Rashad and he needed to be more catious like when he fought Wanderlei…

“A different kind of striker” When I first heard Rogan saying that I was like whatever, I’ll wait and see. But now, those words are a perfect fit for the Spider. maybee chuck would use his wrestling skills and go for the takedown against silva. hack admits that they work on the ground alot, but chuck just doesnt use it. i feel like chuck should retire, but a fight between he and silva would still do huge #s (chuck’s still big to the casual fans) so if that fight were on the table, id say go for it. i do think the spider would annihilate chuck at this point of his career and i can guarantee you chuck wont leave the pit. every interview, written or spoken, he gives credit for all his success to hackleman, wich include being the most popular mma fighter in the u.s., the richest and one of the most sucsessful fight careers ever. i dont see chuck leaving hackleman unless hackleman suggests it. chuck is too loyal.ROME was a little too harsh imo. its not like he’s mike tyson.

If Chuck doesn’t want to fight Anderson Silva, then it isn’t about going after the title. He should then fight matchups, such as Franklin vs Liddell or Henderson vs Liddell type fights that will bring in PPV $$$.
In other words Chuck has to settle for matchups and making bucks before he retires, not necessarily the title shot path.
Yeah, fighting the spider is like MMA suicide, but I’d think Chuck deserves to do what he wants at this point in his career.
Personally, I’d rather see Silva fight someone else a little higher up on the MMA food chain.

As much as I agree with the majority, think about it from Chuck’s POV. If he continues to fight, it’s all about the belt. Since he blew his shortcut to a title shot, what better way to quickly regain credibility than to challenge A. Silva. Yes, ego plays a part in this, but Chuck realizes (I think) that the depth at LT HVY means winning 3 in a row will take too much time and is also very risky. He wants a shortcut, and wrong or right still believes he’s the man.

CL, I see it the same way as you do, if Chuck decides he would rather drive over the speed limit and risk a Crash n’ Burn, then that’s OK with me. He has earned the right to take any path he chooses, He certainly won’t lose my respect as a fighter, even though it’s disheartening to see Chuck face 1st on the canvas.
I do agree however, Chuck should take a break for bit, concentrate on rebuilding his body and spirit…. Chuck’s body is getting softer by months, he needs to hit the weights’’’ hard and admit to himself that he has to learn to keep his hands up! Probably all too late.

Sh*t “who wouldnt want to see it?” This would rival Brock/Randy’s PPV in #’s. It wouldnt even matter that Chuck is coming off a loss! Anderson being the aggressor and Chuck countering? This is perfect for both fighters, Anderson gets credibility at 205 (which he doesnt really need) And Chuck could get his swagger back (which hes still the man)
by JV on Sep 9, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
With Chuck’s wide loopy punches he would eat two or three shots before getting his fist near Silva’s head, and that’s not good business with Silva.

I remember the first time I ever saw Chuck fight and I thought..this dude is gonna get his ass whooped looking like he doesnt eve work out hardly compared to Randy who was ripped…then I quickly learned how you look doesnt determine whether you win the fight or not. This isnt body building. Funny how when Chuck beat Wanderlei no one says shit about his gut or whatever and now he gets KTFO by Rashad and “he should cutt that flab and go to MW” like thats gonna help him anyway. His problem his not keeping his hands up!!! DUH!

I’m telling you guys, Chuck will get a shot at the HW title if Randy wins. He won his last two fights with Randy, so that’s reason enough (in Dana’s mind) for Chuck to get a shot. Dana takes care of his “babies” like Couture, BJ, etc… if your definition of “baby” is someone who makes you a lot of money. He even took care of Tito back then when Tito was threatening to jump ship to Afflict… err… WFA, with his good friends Rampage and Ricco, and guys like Lindland, Bas, and an up-and-coming Faber. Sure, it wasn’t the smoothest re-negotiation, but it got done in the end just like Randy’s deal lol.

If Chuck is talking about really fighting the Legend Anderson Silva??? I find him unfit to make choices for himself.
To qoute Adrian " He’s To Strong!!! You Can’t Win…"
But this is real life, and it applies to Chuck. After Rashad just about put his head 6 beneath the Ocatgon. Chuck is showing signs of delusion…paranioa.. and that wild stuff.
John Hackelman..needs to give him friend to friend advice.
“Chuck..Chill out. Have a sit. Yo John L… Get a Chuck a cold beer.. Chuck you and I are going to burn some funk right now.. and it’s going to make you feel real good.

Chuck, the way you keep droping your left, you may want to think twice about this fight! Look what the Spider did to poor Rich Franklin, you’ll end up with talking with a lisp and a full time black eye. Dude needs to take a break and get his head straigh. If he wants to get back on the UFC map maybe he can beg Dana for a fight with Machida. Someone without knockout power and likes to move away a lot. At least he won’t get hurt…hopefully!

Chuck will always have a gut, but if he can just put on muscle and no more fat if he moves to HW, then he might make some noise. Otherwise, it will be an ugly sight in more ways than one. i think heavyweight would be a bad idea, his hand speed is already slowing, fighting with extra weight could slow him down even more, i kno he walks around at like 220 but still! maybe give him 2 average opponents(alexander/irvin), then 1 last big fight, maybe shogun!! all he needs to do differently in training is learn to keep his left up when swinging, plus i read somewhere that hack said they trained to tackle evans to the ground, but chuck got impatient!
by jslim on Sep 9, 2008 5:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, hvyweight is not that great a move, a guy like Couture’s frame gets stronger at hvyweight and he gains more power. Chuck at hvyweight would just get fatter and his footwork and hand speed would get slower and he would lose more power in his punch. Chucks sprawl wouldn’t be near as effective at heavy’s.
However, I do agree with the guys that say the competition is easier at heavy’s… so there may be something there for Chuck afterall…

Its all about the money but man if that fight pushes thru dont watch it just watch the replay of his fight with Evans thats how its gonna end.
He is being paid 500k with a 1-3 record? That sucks. UFC needs to renegotiate the contract of Lidell and pay him less and let him work his way up. 3-4 wins more he earns a title shot but a win with Anderson (impossible to happen) another title shot no way. Work your butt up again and you should be paid less.

LISTEN TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!Funny how everyones raggin on chuck because he fell victim to a one punch KO in a fight he easily could have won and was winning. Was it just me or was that 1 punch the only one rashad landed the whole fight. Rashad is a bitch that runs and runs and runs. Chuck made the mistake of not standing in the middle of the ring and saying “Hey u bouncy fukin chump..come fight me”. Chuck got off his gameplan simply for the fact of making an exciting fight for his fans. He was already hearing boos cause rashad did not want to engage. Chuck should have stayed the counterstriker that he is but if he had done that there would not have been one punch thrown in the entire fight. Its fuckin bullshit that now hes getting shit for trying to make an exciting fight win or lose.

I think Liddell needs to take a step back and evaluate his situation abit more, basically what I am saying is Liddell needs to start evolving, more take downs, more submissions, the whole combination, and of course learn from his mistakes, I do think Liddell can come back and possibly win the title again, but he is going to have go through hell to get it, could we possibly see a new version of Chuck Liddell, like GSP, my thoughts on who Chuck could fight next umm I am not so sure Anderson Silva would be good for him, providing he doesn’t make the same mistakes as he did with Rampage and Rashad, possibly could see him facing Franklin or Shogun or Machida, but I think if he has to change some things then maybe he needs a fight or two with some lesser known guys to help him adjust to a new way of fighting, hell bring Tito back and let Liddell rip him apart, infact I think Anderson Silva could beat anyone in that division but who knows, anything can happen in the Octagon, anyway final thought I really believe with all my heart that Couture will fight Lesnar, Mir will win, Couture will beat Mir and then Couture will face Fedor, and I believe Forrest will beat Rashad. My hats ar off to you Rashad, I was sad that Liddell lost but holy what a Knockout I was in shock and stunned,

Other than the single fight PPV dollars, what benefit for the UFC does Chuck fighting A Silva offer? If Silva loses, he will lose some of his mystique. If Chuck loses, he is completely done.
Chuck could also fight the loser of Rampage/W Silva. Also, what about Shogun? I would like to see Chuck fight any of those three.

Chuck should wait for Randy to either win the title at heavyweight or lose to some1 (lesnar or nog) and then they can fight one last time. That way if Chuck wins he can go out on a high and even if he loses it’ll be against a legend in Randy. IF rashad was able to dismantle chuck’s style i think Anderson would kill chuck. Dana is gonna probably set Chuck up with Rampage for a rematch in Dec. and then be forced into retirement.

chuck could easily up his cardio, hire a better dietician, do moderate strength training to maintain strength and make 185. it would have to be a lifestyle change not an 8 week crash course fix all training camp. but i dont judge chuck to much on this ko, that punch would have dropped any fighter. chucks hands were down at nearly waist level he has always been a brawler not a skilled striker. rashad fought the same fight as rampage he did not chase chuck and give him the chance to back up and counter with an overhand right. get ready to see chucks spine do the wave for years to come on highlight reels.

the only similarity between the Rashad/Chuck and Rampage Chuck fight is that they both KO’d him in some way and they both did it with right handed punches…Rampage was actually the one hunting down Liddell in their fight, he took the center first and Chuck circled, threw a body punch and got dropped.
VS Rashad, Chuck took the center while Rashad danced and bobbled/show boated until he frustrated Liddell, who had him against the fence, then he saw the BIG opening Chuck left him and BOOM, he dropped CHuck also.

Chuck Lidell fought his same predictable game against Evans. He hasn’t evolved at all and i hate to say it but he’s barely a top 10 LHW anymore. He looked slow and unimpressive from the start of the fight and you could see the knock out coming from way back. Evans was litterally dancing circles around him, it was sad to see. Please retire Chuck….. I’m seeing another Ken Shamrock in the making. All these people talking Anderson Silva are seriously kidding themselves. I love Chuck but i don’t want to see him get hurt and the way he sticks his chin out with his hands down is a disaster waiting to happen. It’s a fine line in the octagon and at 38 years old, with his style, Chuck’s days are numbered if not finished. By the way, all this talk of Chuck v Houston Alexander are ridiculous. Houston is a can. Why does Chuck want to fight a can???

I want to see the fight. I think that Chuck should instead call out Shogun because they were already supposed to fight anyways. The only reason that they didn’t fight, is because Forrest is now the current champion so beating two guys that defeated Rampage wasn’t what had to be done to set up a title fight. They likely saw this as a blessing so they gave him the guy that originally replaced Shogun, Rashad.

Chuck doesn’t deserve a shot at Silva and if Dana makes that fight happen to help try and revive his old freinds career then it should be with the stipulation that if he looses he retires. He’s desperate now, time isn’t on his side and he just got knocked down the ladder and would need at least 2 big fights to get back up there. He’s going to be 39 and by the time he would be able to get a shot at the title he will be at least 40. He always has a good chance to beat people if they play into his gameplan but more people are starting to figure him out. Jardine was throwing that same over hand right that Evans thru to knock him out. Wandy should have beat Chuck but fought with his heart not with his mind and right in to Liddell’s gameplan. I think Chuck should call it quits and become an embassordor of the sport and maybe an analyst or something before he starts to deminish his legacy.

Hey! How about Chuck vs. Obama? I would love to see that ! j/j On the real side of things, there’s no doubt that Chuck can drop anyone in the game. The truth is, the people that have beaten Silva all have on thing in common, they were not afraid of him. Now, not being afraid can get you hurt, but, if you don’t get careless with it, it can work in your favor. However, Chuck would be taking a huge chance fighting Silva. If he lost again, it would probably take six or more wins in a row to get him back into title contention. GOOD LUCK CHUCK!

Sorry! I don’t really care for Chuck, but, you can never rule out someone who can throw like him! Can he out-fight Silva? Let’s not be ridiculous! But, he can put him down if he lands one shot correctly. And anyone can get caught! Noone can argue that. He looked pretty good against Rashad, until he started stalking him and got caught. But I got say, the punch Chuck threw was just abot to land and probably would have crumpled Evans, if Evans’ shot didn’t land just before.
