Fabricio Werdum baffled by Brock

fabricio werdum

Props: Tatame.com

Quoteworthy:

"Ultimate thinks about business, and Lesnar is more famous in United States. I don’t know how they’ll do it, because my new contract guarantees a title shot with a victory against Cigano. They should have put Cigano, who is a newcomer in the event, to face Lesnar, who only has one fight in UFC. But that’s OK, I’ll win quickly my next fight and my time will come. Nogueira will certainly defeat Frank Mir and Couture will beat Lesnar. The 'big' Lesnar won’t make it, Couture will use a good strategy to get him tired and will win on the last round. I can’t see him winning, Couture has a lot more experience and Lesnar is like a white-belt there."

Fabricio Werdum is the odd man out in the four-man heavyweight "tournament" that UFC President Dana White recently put together with the return of division champion Randy Couture. Werdum, however, realizes that he was likely overlooked because Lesnar is such a huge box office draw. He is scheduled to fight Octagon newcomer Junior "Cigano" Dos Santos at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25. With a win he's apparently guaranteed a title shot, which would mean mid- to-late 2009 if he opts to sit and wait for his opportunity.

I don’t think Mir beats Nog.

Nog has better subs.

by ShaiZ on Sep 6, 2008 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s common knowledge Shaiz! Nog is indeed a wizard when it comes to the ground. Mir is like a grey wizard. Nog’s a white one[just like in Lord of the Rings, hehe!].

I’m not saying he can’t win, but how exactly do you see Mir beating Nog? I think it’s stupid that people are upset at Mir getting a title shot. He had the title and lost it because of a motor cycle accident. This was something he was doing way before the UFC made it big. Maybe he hasn’t been THAT impressive, but just think of it as the UFC treating Mir good. Let the guy enjoy the fame that he will be getting from this. This is a guy that broke Tim Sylvias arm in half. You gotta love that! He has also humbled fighters like Sylvia, Brock, and Tank when they thought that power and striking was all that they needed to win.

Thank You RyanHobbs, thats been my arguement for Frank since the bike wreck. Frank over Nog 2nd rnd…bet on it.I never count out Mir.

by jdawg on Sep 6, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Certain fighters deserve more than other fighters. Fighters that have been in the UFC before it made it big are fighters that deserve a lot of opportunities. They are clearly involved because of the love of the sport. I hope that Frank wins this fight, but it is going to be a difficult challenge no doubt. How do you see him finishing Nog? I could see him winning a unanimous decision by out striking nog and avoiding submissions from Nog. Frank Mir is a BJJ expert. He would need to work on his striking extensively, which he did for the Brock fight so it is very possible that he could be better at. Granted, Brock knocked Mir down with that one punch, but I am sure that Mir didn’t see it coming for the same reason that Heath didn’t. They expected Brock to go for the takedown. Mir expected it because that was Brock did in about 5 seconds into the fight.

Mir expected it because that was what Brock had done about 5 seconds into the fight***

by RyanHobbs on Sep 6, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

RyanHobbs – It’s hard for me to imagine Mir winning against Nog. To me, it seems that Nog is just better at everything. His jabs are clean, and he can out-point with jabs alone.

There have been signs of Mir’s improved striking, though we haven’t had a chance to see it much. Even in his Brandon Vera fight, at the beginning of the fight, Mir demonstrated some crisp striking. Be we know how the rest of the fight went; once he was on the defensive, he wasn’t able to gain composure quickly enough.

I will be very curious about that fight, though.

Regarding Werdum, I can see why he’d be bothered. I’m sure the UFC knew it would upset the applecart at least a little. Catch-22. Lower guys don’t want Lesnar (he’s powerful), and the upper guys don’t want him (he’s too ‘green’).

by MMACrossfire on Sep 6, 2008 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I promise you all that Mir will not beat Nogueira. Nog doesnt loose unless Fedor is in the building. Mir is a former shell of himself, not that I thought he was very good to begin with. I think his jits is world class, but his mma game just good. I feel that he has always been overhyped cause he snapped Tims arm.

An interesting fight would have been Mir vs. Werdum

I am not saying that I think that Mir will win, I am saying that it is possible. I was just providing a circumstance in which it was possible for Mir to come out victorious. I honestly hope that Mir wins just because it sucks that he got screwed over by that motorcycle accident.

by RyanHobbs on Sep 6, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nOT GOING TO WIN!

Mir cant beat nog, couture, Werdum and probably brock if they fought again.

Mir wouldnt even beat Herring or gonzaga.

He owuld have a good shot against Kongo

You haven’t learned to not count out anyone in MMA have you? There is always room for speculation, but speaking matter of factly about who will be the victor is never really relevant.

werdum has the right to complain but he better not overlook his upcoming opponent

by brendan on Sep 6, 2008 5:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hell make himself look real bad if he dismisses his next opponent to look for a title shot and then loses to “cigano”

by brendan on Sep 6, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea, Cigano is an up and comer from Team Nog and this is his shot so he will take it to Werdum.

no he does’nt.Werdum come to the ufc and loses his first fight then wins one, just like Brock. Brock has more draw than Werdum to the casual fan.$$$$$ is what its about

guys like brock will turn ufc into a joke like wrestling but hey its all about money.brock should not have atitle shot against cotoure after only one win in ufc.maybe this whole thing is just a business deal for dana and randy to both get what they really want.dana tells randy if he come back and throw a fight against lesnar,he will be released from his contract.then randy is free to go fight fedor for a big payday and dana has his new very undeserving cash cow lesnar at the top of ufc heavyweight division.sounds like something staged out of wwe ,but since its about money ,everyone wins except the fans who are sold a bunch of crap.so if cotoure loses to lesnar i will suspect a fly in pie.

by eric on Sep 7, 2008 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

werdum has a legit beef, but his lackluster perfromance against arlovski set him back a bit. he held his own fate in his hands and put up a stinker. he has shown alot more as of late though, so if its in his contract to get a title shot, he should wait it out. he knows its about business and has a good head on his shoulders. fabricio is still an unknown to all but the hardcore fans. it’s not fair, but it is reality.

by b.w. on Sep 6, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

really if you think about it, werdum deserves to be fighting nog for the interim title over mir. i like mir (who doesnt), but him being on tuf is why he’s getting the title shot. as far as nog goes, i dont think he is a miffed about brock/randy as some have suggested. it sucks that the ufc puts the belt on hold for so long for tuf, but if you think about it, nog really needed the exposure tuf WILL give him. look at how much MORE popularity wandi has gotten in the states just from these little tid-bits of video interviews he gives, where people get to see his personality shine through. i think alot more american fans will feel a bigger connection to big nog after tuf as well. i think big nog knows what the deal is and doesnt feel disrespected by the ufc. this is all asumption on my part, but it is also assumption that nog feels disrespected until we hear from nog himself.

Nobody really cares to see Werdum fight, he should be quiet

I just went to double-check Werdum’s record. Wow. He’s got wins over some top guys. Only one of his 11 wins went to a decision.

by MMACrossfire on Sep 6, 2008 6:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I checked YouTube and found Werdum vs. Aleksander Emelianenko. Werdum made Emelianenko look like a novice. Emelianenko didn’t get off a single strike that I could see, and he did zero damage to Werdum. Werdum controlled him the whole time, then sunk in a choke a few minutes into the fight.

by MMACrossfire on Sep 6, 2008 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah Werdum has done more in the octogon to get a title shot than the vanilla gorilla but Brock brought something over from the wwe: He knows how to self promote. Those wwe guys spend more time talking smack and doing cowboy antics like what Brock did after his 3 round dry humping of Herring than they do fighting. Sadly moronic wwe fans out number mma fans. Randy is going to humiliate Brock and Dana knows it.

by hatteras on Sep 6, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thank god there are new promotions like affliction, because the ufc is becoming a joke

by eric on Sep 7, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

IF mir tries to strike with Big Nog he will get TKO’d in the first otherwise he will lost in the late 3rd or mid 4th round when he runs out of gas.

As for Werdum its pretty fucked up if they make him wait half a year for his title shot….

by Khaos_warrior on Sep 6, 2008 8:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tonight if chuck wins he gets the title shot. okay what if rashad wins? same thing I guess. Poor Lyoto Manchida all he has done is beaten BJ Penn, Tito Ortiz, Rich Franklin, big Nog and NEVER lost. Werdum isn’t the only one being passed up. I for one would rather see Nog fight Randy, Mir vs Werdum and the vanilla gorilla fight Gonzaga.

by hatteras on Sep 6, 2008 8:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Machida never fought any of the Nogs. Maybe you’re thinking Soko..or Stephan Bonnar perhaps??

by Big E on Sep 7, 2008 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

sounds more like it should be

by eric on Sep 7, 2008 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

woww werdum is shit
i bet mir would beat him
and mir could smash heath herring and gongaza
if werdum went in the octagon vs lesnar i wouldnt be surprised if lesnar won
in the tournament its gonna be
couture vs mir

I hope Lesner wins the world heavyweight title and shuts the mouth of all you whiney, sniveling little bitch ass mma purist fans.

Top fighters in UFC HW:
champs:
Nog, as good as they come without being Fedor
A 45 year old that got ruined by Liddell 2ce
contenders:
A WWE wrestler
An out of shape fat guy that got pwned by Vera and Cruz
A boring as hell BJJ guy with mediocre stand up

by Bill Maher on Sep 7, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

either that fabricio or, you will loose to cigano. brock will defeat couture by murder, it does not matter if nog or mir wins brock will kill either one of them. this division was in bad shape when guys like fabricio werdum were to be the top contenders. im glad randys back but even more so that brock is here.
