UFC Quick Quote: Chris Leben might want to rethink his UFC 89 gameplan for Michael Bisping

"I read that he said I might him with 20 punches to his one punch because I'm faster but he only needs one punch to knock me out. All I'd say to that is he's going to need a very good game plan to agree to let me stand there and punch him in the face 20 times!"

-- Michael Bisping questions the gameplan his opponent at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben," Chris Leben mentioned in a recent MMAmania.com interview in a new interview with The Sun. Both bangers are set to clash at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 18. It's a 185-pound scrap that has already received a ton of attention even though we are still more than one month away. Here's to hoping that Leben doesn't change his gameplan ... let the sluggers slug.

well yeah leben probably shouldnt take twenty punches to throw one, but he does have some real KO power. i see this on ending with bisping on the floor.

If Leben plans on taking 20 punches from Bisping I think the fight will end in Bisping’s favor. If Leben fights smart though it will be a very close fight!

by MMAFAN204 on Sep 2, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed: i totally believe leben can take this fight if he plays it smart, but if he comes out flying like he has in the past bisping will take him apart. hes gonna need a good gameplan and i hope he brings one

by medecine balls on Sep 2, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Bisping. His speed will play a big roll in this fight. I think Bisping’s chin is way under rated. I have seen him take shots from heavy hitters like THE BEAST epstien. I am a fan of Leben’s as well and I think he is a very much improved fighter but I think highly of Bisping as a middleweight. speed and a good stick and move game plan should enable Bisping to get the decision win. of course i am aware that Bisping will take a beating in the process but I think in the end Bisping wins a decision.

by john on Sep 2, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Its kinda funny how everyone considers this to be such a big fight for Bisping and his career. Yes, he is the Main Event, but he is still fighting against Chris Leben. Chris has not been a in the Top 10 of the MW division since the arrival of Anderson Silva. I am a big fan of Leben and will really be pulling for him in this fight as always, but even if Bisping is able to beat Leben, does that really mean that Bisping has truely arrived, when he has still yet to face a Top 10 opponent. So many people on this site are very quick to diss Leben at every chance they get and say how much he sucks and that he doesn’t deserve to be in the UFC (I disagree with all), yet if Bisping beats him, he is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Basically, if Bisping wins he will be held on this pedastal and be no more than 1 fight away from a title shot when in reality, there are MANY fighters ahead of him. Hendo, Marquardt, Kampmann, Leites, Patrick Cote, Ricardo Almeida, Yushin Okami, should I continue???

Yet, if Leben wins, everyone will just say that Bisping has always been overhyped and Chris proved it. And he will pretty much stay where he is in the division

If bisping gets a title shot after just this and one more win im gonna flip. neither of these guys should be anywhere in the title picture at this point. good call VM

by medecine balls on Sep 2, 2008 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

John you’re right. He took a few sledgehammers to the dome from Epstein. Savage fights.

Still Leben could KO Mike but I don’t see it. I see Bisping picking him apart on the feet then dumping him on his back and g’n’p Leben from the side. He won’t even play in Leben’s guard it’s not his style. He’ll toss the legs to the side and drop some bombs.

I think Leben might catch him once and Bisping will weather it. All that being said, what’s the point in predicting it, things often don’t work out the way you foresee them, especially in mma. Should be entertainig anyways.

I agree with your entire post VM.

by PhilQNY on Sep 2, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually think Leben is under rated. I believe he has gotten much better since Silva TORCHEd him. Leben is IMO a very tough gatekeeper because until he decides to become a “SMART” fighter, he wont ever be able to put together an imoressive winning streak to get him a title shot, but he is a very tough opponent for anyone not named Silva. Problem is he has the “cabbage syndrome” at times. Meaning he realies on his sturdy chin and leaves himself open to take big shots while he tries to throw a BOMB. Most of the time his chin withstands the blow and he isnted KO’ed but taking those shots till take a little something out of you. I think Bisping is skilled in every facet of the game, but until he fights SMART and implements gameplans t hat he actually sticks to, he will never be a contender. That why I look at Bisping as a solid gatekeeper for that division. Kind of like McDonald. They ar etough opponents for most but not championship material.

Bisping has the smarts and “marketability” that gives him a shot a tiitle shot. He beats Leben and thats 3-0 at middelweight. I know the 1st 2 wins were over cans, but beat Bisping and then beat a top 10 fighter or 2 and you know that the UFC will give The Count a title shot a little premature (like Forrest) in England.

We know what we are getting with Leben. But we dont know what we are getting with Bisping. He is always getting better and he has looked so good at middleweight (although against cans), that we havent been really able to analyze his game. But the potential is atleast there for Bisping to be a force in the division.

Lets say he steamrolls leben, we would then have to take him serious.

by john on Sep 2, 2008 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

If he FINISHES Leben, then he is finally worthy of the attention he has been getting. Otherwise, the UFC did a great job setting up the smoke and mirrors for people to think that Bisping was legit to begin with.

by ViolentMike on Sep 2, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree and I disagree. Depends on which Leben shows up to fight. If the intelligent Leben (not the exciting one) shows up he should be hard for Bisping to finish. But if the wild Leben shows up, Bisping will need t finish him to prove he is the real deal.

I think Bisping was very much IN the Rashad fight, and I really dont think Leben couuld have hung with Rashad like that. I wont be surprised if Bisping finishes Leben, but ifg i had to bet on it I say Bisping via decision.

To a degree, the smoke and mirrors have been in affect with Bisping (thus far), cant argue with that. 1st time we get to se ehim without the blinders….should be interesting!

by john on Sep 2, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

you really cant analyze how bisping will do in MW division until after this fight…yeah he looked real good in his last two MW Fights..but they were againts very low ranking MW’s you cant say for sure just yet you know..this fight will determine how he does in the MW division…bisping has better boxing but not the KO power leben or silva have…reme, ber peeps silva hit him about 20 to 30 real good times before leben was floored completely…while bising was shooken by hamill and floored by sinosic (both do hit hard but no KO power) bisping is talking mad if he thinks he can eat 20 of lebens hooks or upper cuts or overhands. its still hard to say who would win..leben has very underrated jits game while bisping has a solid wrestling base. leben striking has become a whole lot more crisper while bisping has the added weight power to his striking from being a 205er most of his career…but i always like lebens style of in your face fighting.

i think (and hope) that Leben with KTFO of Bisping, but as Hammil showed, Bisping can be an elusive target at some times. i think that Bisping will land more punches, but Leben will keep catching and rocking him with one or two punch combos, in which Bisping will jump into “survival mode” and stay conscious. Leben by split decsion.

It is easy to talk when you beat up lesser competition. He is the only fighter that I know that HASNT faced a contender after 8 or 9 UFC fights…..even guys that have lost a few faced stronger competition than this guy….But he talks and talks and talks

DANA WILL SAY SOON SILVA V RAMPAGE!!!!! Jackson has penned a three-year contract with the Wolfslair team, that will allow him to split his camps ahead of big fights.

Rampage is coming off the loss of his UFC light-heavyweight title to Forrest Griffin, and it appears his first fight will not be a rematch, after Bisping threw the names of Wanderlei and Shogun into the melting pot.

Before the Griffin fight, Wanderlei and Shogun were the last two men to beat Jackson, but Bisping predicts a big return for his close friend.

“I’ve heard he’ll be facing Wanderlei or Shogun but either way, revenge is the dish that’ll be served up on the night,” Bisping told The Sun.

“We’ve got a lot of good jiu jitsu guys, a lot of good wrestlers and boxers and he was really impressed with the level of talent here and the managerial side of things too.

“Rampage is a world-class fighter and…we’ve got great coaches who can push him on to the next level.”

For some resason I see a lot of this fight taking place on the ground. I see Bisbing taking it to the ground after taking a shot or two from Leben and Leben holding him in guard.

by DB on Sep 2, 2008 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

Me too. For some reason I see Bisping bailing in this fight.

by ViolentMike on Sep 2, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

love or hate bisping, he is the more well rounded fighter of the 2 and that almost always translates ino a win. leben is always tough and has a great chin and 1 punch ko ability so you cant ever count him out of a fight. if bisping sticks to his gameplan i can see him winning by ud or a late round sub.

by b.w. on Sep 2, 2008 2:15 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree, while Bisbing maybe has the better wrestling and ground and pound, Leben has the far better jiu-jitsu. To be honest, I think that’s the biggest difference in this fight. Both are excelent strikers, Bisbing wrestling is a little better, but Leben has a far better ground game.

by DB on Sep 2, 2008 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i disagree. i think Leben is the more well rounded fighter. he submitted Edwin DeWees (i know he sucks, but at the time he was a decent submission fighter) and had that triangle on terry martin sunk in. add to that the decision win over luigi fioravanti where he took luigi down at will. jon fitch had trouble gettin luigi down, so that shows you lebens wrestling skill
bisping has showed decent wrestling and good submission defense in his fights with sinosic, schafer, and mcarthy i beleive, but never really any good submission attempts or dominant wrestling skills. bisping is good and well rounded as well, but leben has shown more than him.

by sinster on Sep 2, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

bisping has held his own in the cage with rashad and hamill, so this fight wont hit the ground unless bisping wants to take it there, and he wont have any problems with lebens “submissions” or ground game. bisping is the stronger of the 2 imo moving down from lhw. (leben looks like he could make ww to me). the only thing that bisping has to worry about with leben is that 1 big punch out of nowhere. leben was losing that fight to martin until the 1 big punch and was embarresed by jason macdonolad. i know mma math doesnt work, but you brought up terry martin, luigi and Dewees?(your right he does suck). bisping is the best fighter leben has fought since a.silva. imo.

by enzo-enormous on Sep 2, 2008 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

I love Leben and his style, but Bisping is my 2nd favorite fighter and I am really pulling for him in this fight. Still I think he needs time before he faces Anderson Silva but he is definitely on a fast track to that fight if he wins this one. Although it was a thrashing in the first fight, Leben probably has the best chance out of the 185’ers to beat Silva since he can knock you out if he catches you clean, and a flash KO at this seems the only way to get past Silva. They have thrown top level wrestlers, good Jiu Jitsu guys, and technical strikers who all have came up short. A brawler who can KO you with one clean blow is all thats left. Here is hoping Bisping wins a war that gets both fighters respect.

by Treg12 on Sep 2, 2008 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

it would be shocking to me if silva gets knocked out, the only way i see him losing is getting submitted. theres no weakness in his stand-up, just his sub defense. probably shouldnt call that a weakness. hes awesome on the ground, but if theres a gap in his game, its getting sub’d.
