UFC Quick Quote: Chuck Liddell is on a mission

chuck liddell

"He finds a way to win. He’s done a good job controlling his fights. He’s good on top, and he moves well on his feet. He’s elusive and hard to hit, but I’m going to see if I can catch him.... I’m on a mission to get my title back and end my career on a streak of wins. I’m in shape, and I’m going to keep throwing like I do. The knockout power is still there."

-- Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell provides Sherdog.com with a quick and accurate scouting report of his upcoming opponent at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" on September 6, Rashad Evans. It's the main event fight at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., earning the winner -- especially if it's Liddell -- a likely title shot against Forrest Griffin perhaps before the year is even out. It's a major contrast in styles -- Liddell is the striker and Evans is the wrestler. And it will likely come down to who can execute the proper gameplan on fight night. There's really no mystery involved ... unless "Sugar" somehow "catches" the "Iceman" first.

Chuck is either going to TKO Evans or get a unanimous decision by putting a beating on Rashad worse than the one he put on Silva.

Liddell is going to ko Evans.. if evans wins it is going to be by a boring fight and pulling out a victory… liddell can’t lose this is a lock for gambalers!

by mikeybear on Aug 29, 2008 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

“It’s a major contrast in styles” that Liddell is accustomed to. The only way for this fight to go to decision is if Rashad can somehow 1)get Liddell down, 2) keep Liddell down, 3) Lays and prays. Then, he pulls out a dishonorable split decision. Whatever gets the win, I guess, but, you won’t make a fan out of me.

by Kimura by Fedor on Aug 29, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Chuck did not put a beating on Wandy. It was a decision win.

I hope Chuck uppercuts Rashad’s head into orbit.

by OJR on Aug 29, 2008 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Even though it might not be the most popular opinion, I want to see Chuck fight for the title if he wins this fight. Machida is the only one that I think is more deserving then Chuck. If Chuck beats Rashad, that will be two wins against top ten LHW. No other LHW contender can claim that except. Machida has beaten some good fighters, but none that are unanimously considered top ten. I would like to see Machida get his shot if he can beat Thiago.

I’ve always liked Chuck and would like to see him get another crack at the belt before he’s done.

I just cant seem to get excited about this event. Its not that bad, but it just doesnt appeal much to me for some reason. TO get me excited about this b-level card, I had to bet $ on every televised fight.

I bet:
$780 on Chuck to win $300
$120 on Rich to win $50
$50 Palhares
$25 Yoshida
$50 Kampman

by john on Aug 29, 2008 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Dang, those are “ugly” odds for Chuckie Boy there….But whatever gets you the money I guess, hehe!!

by TheNegation on Aug 29, 2008 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

May i reccomend to anybody betting on this event, Yoshida is a perfect bet to take, he will dominate Karo, and he is a big underdog on the betting lines

by mitt romney on Aug 29, 2008 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

chuck did not put a beating on wandy are you kidding chuck pounded wandy yea he didnt knock him out but he did pound on him for the better part of three rounds did you see wandys face after the fight?

by matt on Aug 29, 2008 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess GSP didn’t put a beating on Fitch either. All it means by going to a decision is they took a beating that much LONGER. Did you see Wandy’s face? It looked like he took a couple beatings.

by Gord on Aug 29, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, chuck hasn’t knocked anybody out in about 2 years!!! and if he does get his belt back he will retire before he has to fight rampage again, MARK IT DOWN!!!

by deuce 4 on Aug 29, 2008 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, the last thing I want to see is Chuck/Rampage 4.

by chefdaddy on Aug 29, 2008 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

or Chuck/Machida as they both back peddle playing the waiting game….snoozer

by McArthur on Aug 29, 2008 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, did I miss Chuck/Rampage 3?

by BLOodyMEss on Aug 29, 2008 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I was counting the first time Rampage whooped on him, in Pride.

by chefdaddy on Aug 29, 2008 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Still, did we miss a fight? They only fought 2 times.

by Gord on Aug 29, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, was there even a Chuck-Rampage III?

by TheNegation on Aug 29, 2008 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Guys, they fought 2 times in the UFC and once in Pride. C’mon now.

by chefdaddy on Aug 29, 2008 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

????

maybe im missing the joke

they fought twice

by mitt romney on Aug 29, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Er, Chefdaddy.
I think you are confused.

by Shattereddreams on Aug 29, 2008 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW! Have you ever been so completely sure about something and been 100% wrong? Well, that’s me right now. Sorry guys!!!! I for some reason could have sworn they had fought 3 times already as sure as I know the sky is blue. I have absolutely no idea where that particular case of the stupids came from, but my apologies. Christ, I think I need a drink. Anyway, my bad X 1,000. Thanks for the correction.

dude his number of fights in last 2 years is only 3, 2 losses & 1 win against wanderlei silva, you should be considerate, you should said instead, he doesnt knockout his last opponent “wanderlei silva” but a very exciting fight

by mad_drummer on Aug 29, 2008 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry to steal a thread but I just learned that Brock Lesnar is in Wamma’s top 15. Not sure if it has been posted anywhere else but I just read it on yahoo. (an article about Brett trash talking Kimbo)

“Could Rogers beat anyone in the WAMMA Top 15 — Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Nogueira, Josh Barnett, Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, Tim Sylvia, Fabricio Werdum, Gabe Gonzaga, Cro Cop, Ben Rothwell, Aleks Emelianenko, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson, Brock Lesnar and Cheick Kongo? Speaking to one Las Vegas oddmaker, all of these fighters would be at least -300 against Rogers. In fact, I’d be willing to say Rogers couldn’t beat one of the “fossils” that he mentioned, Dan Severn."

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 29, 2008 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, what beating did he give wanderlei? all wanderlei did was stand there and be a punching bag to “impress” and gain american fans since it was his 1st fight back and still, lidell could not knock him out!

by blah on Aug 29, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

sugar looked terrible against tito and bisping, if that is the fighter that will show up against chuck than he will fail his takedown attempts and will get battered on the feet..

WAR CHUCK!!!

No serious, Chuck is gonna F#ck this clown up!

by The Dude on Aug 29, 2008 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

Yea I really don’t like Rashad so I can’t wait to see the teary/swollen eye’d post fight interview after Chuck knocks him out. Many a wrestler has tried and failed.. and this won’t be much different.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 29, 2008 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

I kind of see Rashad in Wandi’s position, except he’ll go for a couple take downs and in the stand up department he doesn’t have the striking ability that Wand does to go toe to toe with Chuck. Chuck has the reach and I don’t see Rashad taking him down and keeping him there. He couldn’t even keep Bisping down there’s no way he’s holding Chuck down.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 29, 2008 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I would like to see Chuck bumrush Rashad and land bombs one right after the other until Rashad falls to the canvas (Chuck/Tito I style)but I see this being a typical Liddell taking his time to look for that openeing and land the homerun. I think Chuck is better than Rashad in all areas, cardio, striking, jits, most will dog me for this, but I’d say Chuck’s wrestling is better than Rashads, (if you cant take a guy down, wouldnt you say hes a better wrestler?) Cant wait to see this card play out. I want to see some brutal KOs! Rashad should be at MW in my opinion.

by Chadx23 on Aug 29, 2008 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

WAR Chuck! He has done so much for the sport, I would love to see him retire on top.

by Bill Maher on Aug 29, 2008 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

Even id it’s manipulated by the UFC Brass.. Would you rather see him fight Rashad or a Lyoto Machida.. to claim the right to 1# contender spot.. Would rather have him fight Forrest or Rampage the guy who took the title from him??

The Iceman is legend in and out the octagon. My with this whole set up.. is how it’s set up. After losing the title, he lose to Jardine.. beats Wandy in Wandy’s UFC debut.. then he gets Rashad Evens.. who’s last opponents were Michael Bisping, Tito, and Sean Salman?? To say to Chuck if he beats this guy..he is in line for a title shot?? It’s business.. PVV #‘s etc.. but IMO Chuck isn’t the 1# guy to fight for the LHW belt..even if he knocks Rashads head into outer space.

by PhilQNY on Aug 29, 2008 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s simple to analyze this fight. Rashad has no stand up to match Chuck’s. He will go for takedowns and he won’t be able to hold The Iceman down, because, well, because, NOBODY can. This fight will remain standing and it’ll be fast.

by Cristiano from Brazil on Aug 29, 2008 11:44 AM EDT reply actions

Rashad has fast hands. If he can get in, throw a couple punches and get out he could have a chance. No way he knocks Chuck out, but he could land some combos here and there to have a chance at a decision.

by PW on Aug 29, 2008 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

seriously stop the chuck hating hes #1 before machida as he has beaten more top ten opponents in the ufc than anybody in any weight division. yes machida is undefeated but who has he faced? chuck demolished wandi, yes it was a decision win but a demolishin of a great fighter!!!! he got beat from jardine in a very close decision win, a guy that has beat the current champ, and clearly chuck didnt havent his fight head on in that fight, and just got caught from rampage!
in regards to the chump who said chuck wouldnt fight rampage again, and also the comment about rampage/chuck 4?? for a start it would be 3 so you clearly dont know your stuff and secondly chuck came out last week and said the fight he wants more than anything is the rampage fight as he made a mistake and got caught and that he thinks he matches up well against rampage!!
Also why are peopleregarding chuck/evans fight as an easy fight? rashad has fought similiar calibre fighters as machida and remains undefeated just the same, so stop the shit talk!!!!Chuck to get his title back!!!!!!!!!

by mo on Aug 29, 2008 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

Mo: Chuck can not beat Rampage. Their first fight in Pride was such a beating that Chuck’s corner through in the towell.. in their rematch for the UFC LWH title.. Page did not brake a sweat.. Both fighs were no where near being competitive.. if Chuck thinks he matches up well with Page..then he is delusional.. that’s like Ken Shamrock saying he matches up well with Tito Ortiz..

The problem with Machida is NO ONE WANTS TO FIGHT HIM..

Why should he Chuck get a title she for beating Rashad Evans?? Rashad as much of an improved striker he is..and MMA figthter.. his bread and butter is " Wrestling ".. Who Chuck dominates inside the Ocatgon.. Chuck is 1# for ratings.. for PPV sales.. for marketing.. but not for a title shot.. just because he’s about to push 40yrs old.. and has a big fan base does not mean he is the the number 1 guy in the UFC LHW division. The way this scenario would make sense to me is if…

1. Chuck vs Lyoto … winner faces Forrest

2. Chuck vs Page3… winner faces Forrest

3. Thiago Silva vs Rashad… for the 1# contender and next in line for a title shot.

4. Page vs Thiago.. for 1# statis

5 Wandy vs Rashad..for 2# statis

This whole situ is wateresd down by marketing and UFC politics.. Dana wants Chuck to hold that Belt.. Chuck is the face of MMA in America.. but that shouldn’t give him the easiest road back to a title shot. After losing to Page. Chuck is 1-1.. beats Rashad.. is 2-1..and then he should get a title shot??

Thanks Bro..

by PhilQNY on Aug 29, 2008 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

See, I completely disagree with that.
Yes, the first fight was a complete beating and the second fight was a complete flop for Liddell (he made a huge error and Rampage capitalised on it).

I’d say the first fight would hold more meaning, except for the fact that it happened ages ago. If we can generally discount Anderson Silva’s losses so many years ago (ala Ryo Chonan) then surely we can discount Chuck’s loss to Rampage in 2003?

The second fight, Chuck just got caught. Just like Tim Sylvia got caught in his first fight with Arlovski. Just like GSP got caught in his first fight with Matt Serra. There’s no reason why he can’t come back and win the next fight now, is there.

There’s nothing about Rampage that should be unbeatable for Chuck. It’s different to Tito Ortiz and Shamrock. Tito had better cardio, more speed, better wrestling, better jiujitsu, probably better striking. Chuck and Rampage’s advantages are less defined in those areas.

If you think Rampage will most definitely batter Chuck next time round and you’re willing to make an 8:1 odd bet with me (I can imagine Tito/Shamrock III being similar) then feel free to contact me.

by Tim on Aug 29, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Mo, top contender doesnt mean who you have beat 3 years ago, its how impressive is your record the last 4, 5 or 6 fights theyve had typically? or in fedors case, the last 7 years lol??? get it right my man…

by blah on Aug 29, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont think rashad is going to be able to get this fight to the ground and if he does he is not going to be able to keep it there, rashad had trouble taking down bisping and the times he did secure a takedown bisping got back up fairly quick and chuck is a better wrestler than bisping and alot bigger, i think rashad is a small lhw. Rashad has fast hands but he seems hesitant to throw them and i dont think he has the power to hurt chuck, rashad has a hell of a chin and i think this fight has a good chance of going to a decision but i am hoping to see chuck return to his highlight reel finishes and ko rashad on his way to a fight with forrest. I think a fight between foreest and chuck will out draw chuck vs. tito II and get well over one million ppv buys especially if it happens on the new years eve show and has a good co main event like the a heavyweight title fight

by matt on Aug 29, 2008 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

totally disagree philqy you say chuck shouldnt but rampage should?? thats a little lop-sided to say the least, rampage only beat eastman to get his first title shot, caught chuck with a nice but a lucky punch!!! then he gets beat from forrest, and he only has to win 1 to get another title shot??! come on!! chuck dominated for years and hasnt had a chance to get his title back!! Rashad is unbeaten the same as machida, just because you may not rate him as highly doesnt make you right!!! I think chuck should get his title shot if he wins then face machida if he beats thiago, as machida hasnt beaten top 10 opponent yet!!!! stop being anti chuck and open your eyes!!

by mo on Aug 29, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not anti Chuck..I’m anti the BS the UFC wants to shove down my throat. Why make an excuse for Chuck losing to Page..if Chuck himself said it his post fought.. comment.. " I made a mistake and paid for it"

Exacution + Preparation = Lucky Punch

Page got his title shot cuz Liddlel as like with MAtt Hughes dominate his division for set period of time. He fought Tito2x Couture3x Babalu2x Jeremy Horn.. all are good wrestlers that did not want to to satnd with him.. they had to.. but I ‘m sure they didn’t want.. Page got his title shot.. cuz he DESTROYED Chuck in the Pride.. Chukc had beaten everyone till he faced Page again.. Page was just given warm up fight.. before the title match up between the to.. I’m not going to change your mind or opinion on this topic.. and neither you change mind. My eyes are opened.. I se hoethe UFC is feeding Chuck another Wrestler.. so they can justify given him a title shot.

Page vs Forrest was so close.. and I was shocked to hear how the judges gave the 1st round to the first found to Forrest.. that is like giving the 2nd round to PAge.. BS.

Under those circumstances I would of like to see Page have an automatic rematch.. Page took the belt from Chuck..Forrest was handed the belt from Page. PAge F’d up.. with his outside the octagon actions.. so that screwed up things a bit.. the disagreement that we have is.. does Chuck deserve a title shot..if he beats which 9.7 out 10 times he will be Rashad.. I say NO.

And you say YES.. So we will agree to disagree.. I hope Reashad Lays and Prays for 3 rounds of dry humping Chucks leg like a dog in heat.. to score a decision victory. Jsut to screw up the UFC’s plans.

by PhilQNY on Aug 29, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Rashad and Ralph Maccio Machida are both ridiculous. They don’t have any champ qualities. Why the hell would the UFC want to have either of them representing the LHW division as a champion. This is why they are getting set up for loses. Both of them squeaked by Tito without a loss and that deserves no recognition. I mean, Machida almost got submitted! Machida would even struggle with Glass Jaw Alexander and Rashad would sugar coat his shorts against Wandy.

by ArlovskiRush on Aug 29, 2008 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

on the same token everybody expected page to beat forrest and he didnt, theres no way he deserves a rematch if that was the case then hendo should have and so on and so on!! you only mention the wrestlers who chuck has beat but what about the strikers?? I just think your being very biased!!

by mo on Aug 29, 2008 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

rashad evans is one boring – overrated? – dude. lays on top and does nothing to improve position even when the opponent’s guard is wide open. iceman better beat him or else he’ll lay his way to the lhw title belt.

by kdawg on Aug 30, 2008 5:21 AM EDT reply actions

Liddell is this sport biggest star, no doubt about it and he is also the best LHW ever (ppl can question that, but no other fighter has wins over fighters such as Ortiz, Babalu and Couture (two KO losses for each one) and victories over Belfort, Horn, Randleman, Wandi, Vernon White, Murilo Bustamante and others). He is in my opinion the best fighter ever to fight for the UFC and one of the best in the history of this sport (along with Fedor and Couture). I’m a huge Liddell fan, I recgonize it, but, for sure, he is not a worst fighter and champion (if he gets the title back) than Machida, Thiago Silva or anyone else in this division. He is better than 99% of the fighters out there. The LHW belt will be in good hands (again, if he wins it back).

And pleae guys, stop saying that Rampage needs an immediate rematch with Griffin, he underestimated his opponent and paied the price. It’s not like it was an accident like Mir vs. Sylviaor Couture vs Belfort. He needs to start climbing back the ladder.
