Martial arts gone bad: Taekwondo referee gets punished after loss at Beijing Olympic games

olympics taekwondo
Props: SportsNet.ca

Quoteworthy:

"Angel Valodia Matos (L) of Cuba kicks referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden after he lost his bronze medal contest in the men's +80 kg taekwondo competition against Aman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan during the 2008 Beijing Olympic in Beijing on August 23, 2008."

So much for the spirit of international competition -- Citius, Altius, Fortius!

I appreciate the guys/girls on here that add something to the topic Mania gives us. I don’t often post because lots of time someones already said my opinion.

Im sure there is a few of us on here that are equally as tough on the street so don’t generalize and maybe pay attention to the topic and quite wasting mine and everyone elses time that come on here to debate mma.

Im not like that so don’t ask me to blow you.

as a guy who trained taekwondo for 11 years since a child… though he shouldnt have done what he did, i understand the frustration he prob went through. guys you have to understand the WTF is a bunch of political sport corruption nowadays! this martial art really is about respect and honor before anything else, but when there are officials running this beautiful sport into greed and corruption, one cant help but feel dissapointed. i used to be a competitor in state championships and the scoring and favoritism i would see was unbelievable. its a shame this sport has now become what it is in such a short time in the limelight!

by blah on Aug 24, 2008 3:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The story coming from the cuban camp is that Matos suffered a broken toe on his left foot from an illegal foot stomp earlier in the fight. Due to poor comunication (Swedish ref and cuban fighter) the cubans thought they were going to be awarded the fight due to the illegal blow.

This would be a fair arguement IF the fighter who was unable to continue due to a broken toe did not get up and high kick the ref in the face with said broken toe.

The cuba would have had a good chance of an appeal if not for his temper.

Could you imagine if rumble johnson had smacked the ref after his last fight??? Similar situation.

by MoonUK on Aug 24, 2008 4:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

chefdaddy= Whining bitch lol :)

The Cuban BUM has been banned for life along with his coach which serves him right. He was disqualified for taking too much injury time after he was dropped by his opponent. Basically he had his ass handed to him and cried like a baby cos he couldn’t recover in time. Conclusion HE LOST!! The Cuban’s havr done well in this Olympics NOT. Not 1 gold and the usually dominant boxing team have lost 4/4 inals they managed to get through to. Shame really NOT!! :)

I was watchin this live – it was too funny, when the dood flipped, no one wanted to get near him – he just went crazy out of the blue (like an idiot). Hes banned from international competition – forever i think (but not sure)

The ref’s face in this pic is priceless – goofy or what

by Insain on Aug 23, 2008 3:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What? The ref went right up to him after being kicked, and several other people approached him as well. Are we all talking about the same poor sport who took a cheap shot at a ref (who made an accurate, fair call? You can even hear the ref tell him he has 15 seconds. The guy was stalling.)

by Soups on Aug 23, 2008 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Soups, you and I might be the only two who actually watched this. I’m not sure what most people here are talking about.

by chefdaddy on Aug 23, 2008 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I have to agree with soups and chefdaddy. This is not the first time this guy has been in the olympics. He is a gold medal winner from 2000. He knows/knew the rules regardless of whatever is said coming out of he camp to try and protect the reputation of the team, coach, athlete, and country. He had to be standing and ready to fight after a minte then he could ask for more inury time. Listen to the video it explains it all.

Secondly this is the olympics. I do not care how stressfull or terrible a call is- the Olympics are all about sportmanship. What this guy did disgraced all of his teammates, coaches, country, and most of all Fidel, lol. I wouldn’t be suprised if this guy comes up missing in a few weeks.

john, there’s a video link below this post a little bit. Props to whoever put it up. And yeah, the ref took the kick and it backed him up maybe 3 feet. So f*ck the guy that did it, if he can’t beat up an unsuspecting ref, he shouldn’t fighting anyway. And a lifetime ban for this douche is taking it easy on him. It would’ve been great if the ref got pissed and beat the cr@p out of that @sshole!

by the heat on Aug 23, 2008 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now chefdaddy I didn’t watch this, but my post still has meaning. Taekwondo kicks are with the foot and therefor do not have much power behing them. Most often kicks in taekwondo are used to score points. So with that being said it’s no surprise the ref wasn’t KOed. Not saying he wasn’t trying to hurt the ref, but if you have been kicking that way all your life it’s no surprising that he kicked with the foot.

by DB on Aug 23, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand DB. LOL (at myself for the most part). I have absolutely no idea why this got under my skin. I guess the assumptions made w/o fact. I was just a little shocked or….whatever…..at how many people responded so strangely. Someone above advised me to go have a nap and a beer, probably good advice. Part of it was my subtle attempt at showing irony by responding to posts that said the same thing over and over, with my own posts saying the same thing over and over. Where I “got my back up” some was people who responded rudely to posts that weren’t rude or directed at them at all.

As a former fighter in similar competitions that is the rule that doesn’t have to be written you never strike a ref. Martial Arts is suppose to be about honour and respect. This is a disgrace and something that is in no way funny. This guy should be barred from competition for life, Regardless how upset with the decision you may be you take your loss like a man.

by Scott on Aug 23, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he did get a lifetime ban which he should have. There is something else about this that I don’t like though that no one has pointed out. The guys opponent doesn’t celebrate when he first awarded the victory. However after the guy kicks the ref he starts celebrating and running around like an idoit. I don’t know if he got nervous and didn’t know how to handle the situation or whatever.

the cuban went down with an injury and waited to be attended too but by the time trainers or doctors got to him and started attending his injury he was disqualified. the allotted injury time was only ONE MINUTE. thats all they get if they go down with an injury. i can’t believe they get so little time for recovery. The referree disqualified him while he was still on the ground while they looked at his leg or ankle. he got up limping as soon as the ref called the fight and amazingly healed so fast that he was able to throw a kick. he didn’t snap because he lost the fight… he snapped because he was disqualified for being injured.

Hey Mania,

I sent that one in earlier today on another thread. Thanks for sharing it. Way too funny but I will say the judging has been a little suspect to say the least. I saw a couple of matches and when you would have thought they would have scored a point they didn’t.

BTW “sin sea” is for practitioners of Karate. Not Taekwondo.

Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

Former UFC star Ortiz signs with rival Affliction
August 23, 2008, 12:02 pm

It seems that former UFC light heavyweight champion, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz, has finally signed with rival promotion Affliction in time for their next PPV event on October 11th.

The ref was a spaz.

But the ref in the boxing match should have gotten KOed from the cuban.

What a slack fight that was.

they should have the refs be fighters, even if it didnt make a difference in how they judge it, at least a wrestler or jits guy could have takin his ass out on world wide tv. that would have been just great

The referee is a Taekwondo-fighter and trainer here in Sweden.

honestly it comes down to the athletes environment. Two Cuban wrestlers, both medal contenders defected to different countries and their names were yoel romero 84Kg world champ and Alex Rodriguez 120K world champ. I dont think they have the greatest income and life in comparison to athletes from the US who take in millions in endorsement deals. I bet he was just pissed because he knew he could continue on… but when he went by the ref, the ref raised his hand at him in a very mean demeanor, and that’s when the Cuban barely touched him. If the bronze won him money for his family, and he lost because some punk ref wouldn’t let him continue on. I think any of us would hit him..

So being poor is an excuse to assault people?

I’ll have to remember that next time I’m robbing someone at a bank.

These Olympics are nuts. Best games ever.

Some boxer tried to do a Tyson and bite british boxer James Degale in the final in Beijing!!! Degale won the Olympic gold mainly due to the penalty points for the Mad Mike impersonation.

So since he is cuban that means he is poor and needs the medal to feed his family?

How many people think the SANDMAN is an idiot after what he said two comments earlier???

Nothing justifies it. No matter the circunstances. NOTHING justifies it. I hear that he’s banned of any taekwondo competition. If that’s true, it’s a fair punishment
