I hope SErra knock HUghes the F out! Matt HUghes has no business talking bad about GSP’s performance over Fitch. I dont think Hughes was ever involved in a fight that was half as exciting as Fitch vs. GSP was. TYpical Matt HUghes, NO CLASS!

Ah man.. I would love to see Serra do his " Matt Hughes " striking impression as he is about to square up and fight him in the ocatgon.. I just think it would be F’n hilarious to him do it in front of Hughes..as Hughes can punch him in the face for doing it…or just shoot for his takedown.

John: I thought you ain’t interested in this match-up. Now I’m glad you’re rooting for Serra because I for one am gonna be cheering for this guy to KO Hughes w/his heavy hands. I guess another reason why you hate Hughes is that he’s a f**kin’ 1/2-dimensional wrestler, haha!!

And we all know Hughes isn’t going to evolve any further.

Yep, have to agree. The sport is passing him by, just like he said it passed the great Royce Gracie by. Kind of ironic. But it’s an interesting thought, that somewhere, some kid is training MMA who will surpass our current greats!

by chefdaddy on Aug 18, 2008 10:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

there’s this 1 kid in youtube, he’s only like 8-9 yrs old. And he’s bein’ trained by his uncle I guess. The kid has got some mad skillz!! His muay-thai striking form is excellent! And he knows submissions too[he did an armbar to his trainer]!!…His trainer gave a shoutout, literally sayin’, “You guys watch out for this kid!”

I went to a local MMA match here in Seattle over the weekend. The technical skill even the amature fighters have nowadays is amazing. The internet has given everyone the knowledge only few attained. Gone are the days when a guy who was a good wrestler learned a bit of striking and became a dangerous fighter. This new school cats start off knowing everything from Muay Thai to BJJ. In the future, the difference between fighters isn’t going to be skill set, its going to be who’s the better athlete. And GSP is proving this.

Peep out American Top Team’s website. They have pictures of 7-8 year olds in Gi’s grappling and learning striking…insane!!!!!

I for one hope Hughes just takes Serra down and pounds him out for 15 minutes.

Personally I dont see Serra improving anything drastically and think Hughes will be able to take him down at will.

Let the Hughes hating start!

I’m with you. I got Hughes winning the Serra fight as well. Hughes will completely be able to control where the fight takes place, which will be the ground. Serra does have great BJJ, but for some reason he isn’t able to implement it in MMA as well as alot of other fighters. Plus Hughes is no slouch at BJJ. I expect to see Hughes pounding Serra out on the ground. The only downfall for Hughes can be if he decides to insist on standing and trading with Serra, only because Serra does now have KO power and Hughes has been susceptible to the KO as of late.

WOAH!!! MANiaCs!!!Thanks GUYs!!! I got nothing but Love you guys.. my MMA brotherhood!

As I train.. and compete in these small local tourneys.. to the Naga’s and grappler quest.. to Amatuer MMA.. to maybe one day ProMMA.. I’ve learned time and time again.. Martial arts.. is always about YOU.. I can battle Fedor.. or Silva.. or Joe Doe.. but the greatest battle is with myself. We have bricks wall put in front of us.. not to keep us out..but to keep everyone else out.. The brick walls are there to show us how bad we really it. As i suggested to John.. and I can go ahead andtell everyone.. if you. .train i in the one or various disaplines of MMA.. We are already MMA fans.. but when you puty on on your battle gear.. and get ready.. to spar, roll, bang.. nothing else in the world matters.. not the bills.. relationships issues..job stress.. nothing matters, but the task at hand.. to defeat your opponent. this Weekend I came up short by a few points to a tuf grappler.. but I learned another quality and weakness that I have today.. I progress further as a fighter..

well I do feel fighting is in all our DNA.. even in the places we least look.. like for instance.. waking up and getting out of bed..is a fight.

I know me and my bro just started retraining again here in KY with Core Louisville and hope to participate in some small time grappling tournaments ourselves! by the way phil how did you do in the tournament?

I just finished reading “Made In America”… I understand Hughes a little better now…. but I still “DISLIKE” him. He held little back in his book, which gave a lot of insight to how he became the dickhead he is. I respect his williness to fight but his indifference to MMA is his downfall.

both hughes and serra are past any sort of “big” fights besides if/when they fight eachother. after that fight there should be two ufc retirements. it sucks to be washed up from a sport you once dominated but that’s the way it goes.

BREAKING NEWS JUST IN:

Mark Coleman vs Shogun December 11th at HW!!!

I just got this info from a reliable source this morning.. and wanted to pass it along..here on Mania.

Besides it being at Heavyweight, the fact that its on December 11th is also very interesting. This would mean that the UFC has 2 events booked for December this year!

Congrats my Friend!

December 11th??? That sounds like the Main Event to Season 8 of TUF. That is scheduled for December, don’t remember the day, but December 11th is a Thursday, which means that is will NOT be a PPV.

Shogun should NOT be fighting at HW. He was out of shape at 205, so what’s going to happen at HW???

by ViolentMike on Aug 18, 2008 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Looks like this is a fight night because the 11th is a Thursday.

by Shadyone33 on Aug 18, 2008 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was thinking the same thing, why should he be fighting at HW? Forget the loss to Coleman and fight someone worth fighting at 205, instead of risk hurting yourself again and having to sit out for a long time again. I just want to not only see this guy tear it up, but I also want the mainstream fans to realize exactly who Shogun really is. They won’t get to see that I don’t think if he’s too fat at HW, they’ll just think he’s some fat overrated Brazilian lol.

by Toms Bombs on Aug 18, 2008 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally. Why Coleman? The dude is like 94 years old. Still looks to be in shape but seriously… he retired like 42 years ago.

What’s your source on this one Phil? It’s hard to believe Shogun is persuing this fight so much. I mean, yea, he wants to avenge his loss, but that won’t help his career at all. I don’t want to even think about Shogun losing… Anyhow, the consequences of losing out-weighs the award. Why, Shogun? You’re better than that.

I know someone who trains with Mark Coleman..I thought when I first heard about this match up.. if it was at 205.. but it’s at HW. I don’t know who pursued who.. if Mark made the call..or Joe.. or Shogun.. but it’s from a reliable source.

I have few beers thru out the day.. round 5pm.. I look at myself.. I have a F’n SUN BURN!!! all over my shoulder’s..neck..and arms.. I was mega tight.. I left on Saturday night.. got home sunday morning.. woke up not feeling too hot.. I went the the Masters of the Mat. .with a Sun Burn and a slight hangover.. and sleep deprived..hehehehehehe.. Shit like this only happens to me..

I came in 2nd place in the HW division.. I Had one real slick submission.. could of been the Submission of the Tourney.. but in my 1st palce match.. I fought TUf Mofo.. and came up short by a few points..but I did my best.. and look forward to matches with guyts my own size.. not 6’5 275lbs…guy’s that carry nickname’s like TarZan.

.. about 1:30 in the fight.. He is in my open guard.. he presses down on my right knee to pass my guard.. I close my guard.. but then I open it again.. and give him an exit to pass..he starts to pass on my right side..as he passes.. I kept scooting my hips as if I was going fo his back…He is keeping alot of pressure on my head..I keep my right elbow in tight to my hip..and with my left arm I wrap around his back.. I get to to knees..push him forwad..take out my right leg.. to prevent me from getting his back..he faces me and now I’m in side mount.. I keep my center press against his chest and shoulders..there is a scramble.. I rotate across his body on the other side of him..still in side mount.. as I maintain pressure.. I trap his left arm across his body.. lock my arms tight to secure the Arm triangle.. Once I get my grip.. I jump across his body to the side of his trapped arm and start turning into him.. but the pressure was so much, he was tapping as I was jump over teh mount.

This damn south paw stance for Hughes is killing him. He won 40 fights with a tradition stance and setting up his shots that way, then the dopship changes to southpaw thinking he would get better shots and what happens?… he gets his ass handed to him

by lilmonster on Aug 18, 2008 10:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hughes has a lot more trouble then just his stance. But I agree that changing the stance was somewhat pointless! At this stage in his career, he has to use what has got him here!

Most people this side of the Mason Dixon Line don’t really care for the loudmouth New Yorkers, and Serra plays into that stereotype as well as anyone. Still, I think he’s funny, but I don’t think he beats Hughesus. VM has it right. For all Serra’s BJJ skills, they don’t seem to translate well in his fights.

by PW on Aug 18, 2008 10:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

from what i hear Serra is a great BJJ teacher but gets subbed by his students all the time…he just doesn’t have long enough limbs I guess

by McArthur on Aug 18, 2008 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve trained at Serra’s gym and no he does not get subbed by his students all the time, he is a gracie BB, those guy’s are on another level. But I will agree his BJJ does not work that well for him in MMA, the guy should drop down to 155 hes to small for WW.

by CCF on Aug 18, 2008 11:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That is exactly what I always thought. He was much stronger at 155. For his weight class anyways. Plus, he will be fighting people that arent dwarfing him. I always liked Serra… mainly because I cant stand Hughesus, but still.

What? GSP said, he was going to start training next week. He said he couldn’t spar for 3 weeks because of the stitches. He also said he likes to train even when on vacation or he would go nuts. It’s really no secret that GSP has been training pretty much steady since he started MMA.

great, can these guys just hurry up and fight and then just go away. I dont think the fight its self will be that exciting. there is nothing on the line, both fighters are basically done. other than being just a plain ole grudge match. this fight has no relevance. hughes no longer has a ground advantage on anyone. He has the most ridiculous looking standup i have ever seen. when a one dimensional fighter looses his one dimension its time to hang it up, and dont emberass yourself anymore.

by day1er on Aug 18, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

GSP is responding well to Matt s coments before and after the fight. Prior to the fight Hughes said that he was pulling for St. Pierre, but he also said that If Georges didn t come prepared he would have lost like he did against Serra the first time. He also seemed not thrilled about the fight in the first place and the only reason for going to the event in Minnesota was to watch his old buddy an and wrestler Brock Lesner fight, he also mentioned that he dind t really care about the event and that he does not follow the UFC that much. But after the fight he made comments about St. Pierre not being very muscular as his previous fights and that he looked gassed in the third rd. He also said that he got bored and left in the middle of the fight to go back to his hotel. Now thats coming from a guy who lost twice to GSP and also his biggest rival in the fight game, had some other Welter weight said that it would have been a little different but coming from a guy who got destroyed twice by Georges and lost his title to him its a little bit akward and suspicios knowing the Hughes-St. Pierre history. He sounds kind of jelous but i mean who could forget the two beatings he got from Georges, that fight @ UFC 79 Nemesis was hilerious Hughes was completly dominated and destroyed by GSP, i still laugh my ass off to that verbal submission “TAP,TAP,TAP” Matt was completly humiliated that fight.I am not even a Hughes hater i just tell it like it is. I honestly don t think GSP is trying to disrespect Matt Hughes i just think he is telling what he thinks, the hughes-serra fight could go either way but at this point is not he most sought after fight because both fighters are coming off losses and aren t in their prime anymore is just a regular grudge match that has to happen nothing more.
