UFC Quick Quote: Patrick Cote will 'take care of' Anderson Silva on October 25

"We know how to beat Anderson Silva. The only way to beat him is to push the pace. Go forward all the time.... You can't let him get confident and comfortable in the centre of the Octagon. You have to push the pace for five minutes every round. If I do that, I can catch him. I'll take care of him."
-- Confident Cote strikes again -- this time in the Edmonton Sun via Fight Network radio. The Canadian has been talking quite a good game leading up to his fight against 185-pound demon Anderson Silva at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25. However, the "Spider" has demolished virtually ever fighter who has adopted the "in your face" strategy inside the Octagon. See James Irvin, Rich Franklin (twice), Nate Marquardt and Chris Leben.

I dont have to much to say about Anderson defending his MW strap..He will win every fight at MW he has..
Im not saying he shouldn’t defend his title because I think he should fight at MW as long as he can, but I look more forward to seeing Anderson venture back into the LHW division…Thats where his true tests are at.

Why do I always get stuck in moderation (2x in the Alves thread this morning)? I didn’t belittle anyone and I finally got to debate a little with Tony about a possible Bisping/Silva fight! Mania, clue me in on how to avoid this please.

Chef, I’m not sure if I’m explaining this correctly, but any words that may contain smaller but vile words within will get picked up by the automatic moderation, such as PA$$ for example, because of the A$$ in the end of it. so you should try to avoid using such words, or use different characters to avoid getting moderated. It’s a pain but it works :)

Gracias linx! Never thought of that. Hard enough not to swear! Working in a kitchen, we tend to make sailors sound like choir boys. In “kitchen confidential”, Bourdain said that he was so used to cursing that at Thanksgiving he couldn’t remember if he had actually asked his Mom to “please p@ss the f’in turkey.” lol

yes, a word that I used to always use, but never use on here anymore is “weightcla$$” because the post gets hung up in moderatoin. Instead, I say weight divisions, which sounds dumb, but I don’t get mod’d.

Yeah right. He could take care of Anderson he says? In what department?!? Because I just don’t see this guy dealin’ with The Spider!…He says he will push the pace, right? But I’m sure The Spider is smart enought to slow him down, pick his spots, and ultimately knock him out!…I’m sure Cote will also have a gash in the face about as big as Irvin’s, hehe!!

Cote has the tools to take care of the spider. Let’s
start with his hands shall we. Patrick’s hands are perfect for bring alot to the table! For instance, like a refill of ice tea for Mr. Silva or a dessert from the menu(free of charge of course). Oh yeah and foot massage

Cote can say all he wants leading up to this fight. The fact of the matter is that he will probably be a +800 underdog with zero chance at winning. I seriously think that Anderson could be a -1200 favorite to win this fight, and if you have the money, its STILL worth betting on him because there is no way that he loses this fight.

Leban wans’t in there with title in mind and hewas in a differant time in his carreer.
Patrick has the biggest shot of his Life, the chances of getting another opportunity like this will be slim to none. We’re going to see the best Patrick Cote we’ve ever seen.
There is also the weight cut that Silva will have to do after fighting at LHW. I don’t think it will be a problem but, who knows.
Cote also has some great guy’s to work with including the Grand Master Game Planner GSP.
I can’t beleive that people would say he’s doesn’t stand a chance in there, how can you know that for sure? I think Cote can catch silva. People act like he’s never been hit.

by justin on Aug 17, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The weight cut won’t be a problem because Silva usually ways more than 205 and cuts down from that every fight.
by Macho Bullshit on Aug 17, 2008 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Weight cuts definitely won’tbe an issue…And even if we see the best of Patrick Cote, it will not even come close to a mediocre Silva. I just hope Cote makes the fight exciting enough for the event to be worth it!

no we act like hes 4-4 in the ufc, scott smith, kendall grove, drew mcfedries, and ricardo almeida are not quality wins. they would not hold titles in any organization. so all the sudden cote is a top contender. he is only getting a title shot because this division is cleaned out by the same guy cote will loose to

Doesnt anybody think he might be talking out of his ass and his real game plan is to work the ground game? Maybe he’s commenting all over the place about stand up so that Silva wont be expecting the take down?
just a thought.

Cote’s ground game is laughable and Anderson is a master on the ground. The only time this fight goes to the ground is when you hear the thud of Cote’s lifeless body hit the canvas.

Will the winning ticket be big enough to counter all the money lost when going against the Spider all those times that he won? But yeah, there’s no going back now because the one time you bet FOR him, he’ll probably lose! hahaha jk.
by RedDog on Aug 17, 2008 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
C-War, if Cote does win, you will be up big on all your Anderson bets. I forecast Cote being a +800 underdog. I haven’t seen odds for this fight anywhere yet. Has anyone????
At +800, that gives him a 12.5% chance at winning (if they fought 8 times, Cote would win one).
I think that if they fought 100 times, then maaaaaaaaaaybe Cote could win one, but I still doubt it. He would have to be like +10,000 for me to wager $5. Meaning the $5 bet would win $500.
This could end up being the most lopsided odds for a title fight in UFC history. GSP/Serra I currently holds the record I believe.l
by ViolentMike on Aug 18, 2008 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I may have to agree with you VM, but I have bet against Silva so long now, I think thoughts of suicide would cross my mind if I didnt do it and Silva got dropped. Yea, I see Cote having about a 5 to 10 percent chance of winning, and that’s being generous.
by c-war on Aug 18, 2008 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cote does have heavy hands, but he is not a precise and quick striker. His fight with ricardo showed everything, his strikes werent that affective because ricardo was quick on his feet and he dodge most of them. But he got the nod because he was able to dictate where the fight went. Silva has a huge advantage standing up he is quicker stronger more precise. So Cote you can say what you going to do but when u get hit by 4 punches 2 knees and a headkick in 10 seconds u might change ur mind when ur assed out IMO.

Unless Silva gets sloppy, this won’t go past round one. And he’s too much of a professional not to take ANY fight seriously. Cote is simply stuck, with how to answer these interviewers. He can’t say," well, I got extra life insurance last week so my loved ones will be taken care of." He has to sound positive, it’s part of the job. He hits hard, yes, he can take a punch, yep. but Anderson has that uncanny mix of technical striking and one punch ko power. IMO, we will all once again be astounded, but not surprised with Silva’s victory.

Cote is on drugs if he thinks he even has the smallest chance to even go the distance with Anderson. Anderson will finish him in the first round. If he’s lucky he will make it to the second but i doubt it. Anderson is better than Patrick in every aspect of a fight. Hell, I doubt Cote could even beat Rich Franklin. Dana is just giving Anderson guys like Irvin and Cote that have punching power thinking that these guys have a punchers chance but I wouldn’t even give them that against the best pound for pound fighter in the world. I still think Hendo has the tools to beat Anderson but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Jimmy Dean, Dana gave Irvin a shot cuz he was respectable (kinda)and beatable, and Cote cuz he had to find a challenger somewhere. Maybe we will see Silva/Hendo 2, but that will be after the matchup I’m dying to see: Franklin/Hendo 1!

TheNegation – Maybe Chonnan could offer a legit threat? I don’t think Lawler could. Yeah, possibly Maia.
I think it is more likely that only an aging Anderson Silva will be beatable at MW. But if he’s wise (and I think he is), he will exit the game as a champion, not as a has-been.

Pushing the pace with silva is a dumb and sure fire way of getting eaten alive. I wonder if he will be in there longer than leben?
by NameNotRequired on Aug 17, 2008 1:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes, definitely. At the time Leben went on to lose 3 out of 4 fights and Cote is on a 5 fight win streak. Also Leben was known to rush in flailing wild punches, Cote is MUCH more of a technical striker. He might not be technical enough to match Silva’s pinpoint striking to get the win, but he should be able to last longer than Leben’s 90 seconds. Lastly, Cote would last longer than Leben on his chin alone, it’s better than Lebens and Cote is better at protecting it.
by Gord on Aug 17, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cote hasn’t fought anyone who has truly tested his chin. Also pushing the pace with silva is a sure fire way of getting eaten alive. This one is gonna be funny! Way to throw away your title shot Cote.
by NameNotRequired on Aug 17, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Are you serious! Mcfedries and Leben have PROVEN (with one punch KO’s)that they are amongst the hardest hitting MW’s and Cote took there punches without missing a beat. Scott Smith, Jason Day and Steve Vigneault all have a long list of T(KO’s) to show they have KO power and none of their punches fazed Cote either. Cote’s chin has been tested and passed with flying colors, mind you Silva will test it on a whole new level.
by Gord on Aug 17, 2008 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gord – Good points.
However, I think NameNotRequired made a valid point about testing in general. Cote’s chin doesn’t need to be tested. His whole fighting game needs to be tested. Silva will be an excellent test, even if he gets trounced. Most of these guys would love to have a shot at the highest level of competition. There is no better education for a fighter than to fight the best. (Same goes for musicians… wanna improve? Jam with serious musicians and watch yourself improve practically overnight.)
by MMACrossfire on Aug 18, 2008 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Cote’s biggest challenge will be how he deals with Silva’s clinch. Mind you the only time I seen Silva use his clinch was on Franklin (who had NO answer WHATSOEVER). I think Cote is faster than Franklin and more technical at boxing (always on the balls of his feet). Cote will do every bit as good as Franklin did at tagging Silva a few times. The bad news is, that seems to piss Anderson off and he resorts to his vice like clinch and the knees start flying. I have no idea how Cote will do in that clinch, because NO ONE else has a clinch so deadly. Cote can’t do any worse than Franklin in the clinch, because Rich was a fish out of water to say the least.

Perhaps, just perhaps he’s trash talking and is actually working his wrestling and BJJ.
Granted these are also hopeless as Lutter and Hendo found out but at least they both made it out of round one. I give Cote the “punchers chance”, but slightly better than some of the other strikers Anderson has faced because I think Cote is part of a far better camp than the other opponents (other than maybe Hendo and Team Quest).

Cote barely beat Almeida, what makes him think he can outstrike Silva?
by Sean_M on Aug 17, 2008 3:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Most strikers are taken out of their game when up against a ground ace like Almeida. They are to afraid to commit and get taken down. That doesn’t mean he will outstrike Silva, just that Cote has always faired better against strikers, KOing many of them and never even getting rocked himself,or getting cut. Now they weren’t the caliber of striker that Silva is, however being as Cote took very little damage from guys who have long lists of KO’s, maybe he will do better than many are suggesting. Silva isn’t going to walk right through Cote in the first minute, that’s for sure.

RIP Patrick, I think the most interesting thing about this fight is what his medical suspension are going to be. I am betting 8-10 months from a broken, jaw, nose, and some loose screws elsewhere.

This sounds like the GSP VS Serra I fight. Nobody gave serra a chance and we all know what happened. Silva is 100Xs better than Cote, but in MMA you can’t always be certain of the result

You know, every figher has a “chance” at beating Silva, thing is that chance is very very microscopic. ALL YOU canadians rooting for Cote, come the f.. back to earth, Anderson Silva will rip that clown apart!
by Lycan on Aug 17, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
well last year we all saw how the underdogs were shocking all of us….Gonzaga, Serra…blah blah. I think Cote has a small chance of winning if he catches Anderson Silva off guard. I know that Anderson guages his opponents for the first round for most opponents. I think going standup with Anderson is a bad move. I think Cote will lose just because Anderson is much faster and more efficient. I think he should keep convincing the press and all of us that hes looking to knock him out and then change it up on Anderson with a ground and pound, and takedown. Maybe even attempt a submission. He needs to change it up so it keeps Anderson guessing. He should work on this with GSP. When Anderson gets back up …hit him with some fierce elbow punches or a knockout punch but bring him back down. He should train to neutralize or defend the triangle if he decides to take Anderson down ala Travis Luter. Irvin was a idiot for running his mouth and then trying to exchange like a madman. I think Cote is a little bit smarter and trains with a better camp. I think it wont be exactly the same as the Irvin fight. If he has that mentality like a Kenny Florian and sticking to the gameplan…he should fare better at least. But if he wants to prove it to the world that he can ko A.S….well…its gonna be a short fight.

Yah, good luck with that. A.Silva 1st rnd TKO. How did Cote even get a shot?
by Jason T on Aug 17, 2008 4:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, because the alternatives couldn’t string together 5 wins in a row to deserver a shot (other than a injured Okami).

Yeah I got what everyone is saying about Cote well guess what they’ve said it about him before back in 04 when he was unheard of and being fed to a then dominate Ortiz and one punch almost made history! now I am in no way comparing Silva/Ortiz but lets be honest anyone can get caught. Second Silva is a beast who has been unstopable yes we know that but who’s hungrier a guy who hasn’t really been challenged in 4 years or a guy with the biggest oppurtunity of his life. I’m not saying bet the farm on Cote but give him a fighters chance anything can happen. Pre-fight hype is always great but come on now you’re fighting the best fighter on the planet the PPV is gonna sell without the I’ll tear him apart hooplah. Go Cote!

i agree with almost everythign you say.. except the silva has not been challenged in 4 years.. he’s actually been fighting none stop and against tough ass guys, just he’s so much better that he makes those extremely talented guys look bad…

Cote has absolutely no chance. Period. End of story.
Anderson Silva has only gotten better with each fight and this one will be no different. He is better, and I mean 1000% BETTER than every aspect of MMA than Cote is. Anyone who wants to argue this is kidding themselves.
This is easily the biggest mismatch of the year, however it will be fun to see how bad Silva f***s up Cote’s face. :)
Hey Cote, if I were you, I would just shut up the hell up unless you want your entire purse to go towards medical bills!
by MMA fanatic on Aug 17, 2008 4:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There comes a time with every champion where they finally get caught. No one is invincible..though Anderson Silva comes close. I have to say that if Travis Lutter in the day wasnt so poor at cutting weight…he could have ended the night for Anderson. He had him in a pretty bad spot in that fight, and unfortunately hes the only one of the losers that came close. Its Anderson’s stage..but I theres always a puncher’s chance.
Look at Chuck..he got beat by Mr. Jittery Jardine….it was an ugly ugly fight….he also got knocked out with a very weak but effecient punch by Rampage. At one time..we all thought no one could knock chuck out..maybe beat him in a decision..but not a knock out.
I say Anderson wins by TKO within 2 minutes of the first round. But if Cote manages to pull the unbelievable..I wouldnt be shocked either.

It IS TRUE where I live. I HAVE to PAY for mine. If you live in a province where you don’t pay for it directly, you can bet the government just hoses you more on taxes. They get their money one way or the other.

Cote has proven that he has the best boxing in that 185 divison. Some might say Anderson, but Anderson uses his Maui Thai skills to open up the angles in his boxing game. Overall, Cote can take a punch, we all know that, but can he take a knee to the jaw?
Anderson will probably eat up Cote.

He might win on a big punch, if he can catch Silva Ill give you that. But Anderson has nothing on Cote? That is honestly the most retarded statement I have ever heard about MMA. Name one thing Cote does better than Anderson. Cote doesnt have a stellar record, and just because he is on a five fight winning streak doesnt indicate anything other than his own execution is going to happen. John Fitch was on a 15 fight win streak and look what happened to him.

You must have only seen Cote fight Grove then. He has rocked almost everyone he has fought and near half his wins came via T(KO). Leben said, Cote rocked him more in that fight than all his other fights put together. Average guys DON’T get title shots. At least Cote has a punchers chance. What is bisping going to do to Silva?

the only person i see with a good chance to beat anderson silva is gsp. Gsp, like jon fitch said i was suprised how fast he really was. And to beat silva u gotta be quick like him. And be able to take him down when u take dmg. And gsp is the best at taken people down. And his ground in pound is lethal. So untill gsp fights anderson silva we going to see a bunch of fighters that are not pfp the best. When that happens unless the guy gets lucky he is going to get dominated. So i know bjpenn and gsp going at it. But honestly bj still gotta prove himself in that division. Gsp has proved himself more by avenging his losses and dominating top 10 contenders. I would rather see gsp vs silva any day of the week because i think he is the only guy that can beat silva.

Cote STFU ! your comments are insulting, the UFC should of never made this matchup. Silva should be fighting another 205’er, not this one-dimensional fighter. For some reason Cote thinks that Silva is going to walk in there with a blindfold on, has he not seen Silva fight before?? “Go foward all the time”?? As the old adage of “Everyone has a plan until they get hit” will come into play here. Cote will press the action until Anderson throws a two-by-four of a punch straight down the pipe and then Cote will think differently. If you want to beat Anderson Silva…bring a gun.
by Jason on Aug 18, 2008 12:29 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That is where Cote is different, his plan carries right on, even when he gets hit HARD. Last night I rewatched all his fights and he has taken some bombs (the slow motion replay shows they were flush) . If he was ever rocked, he sure didn’t show it. However he might show it with Silva’s knees though.
