UFC Quick Quote: Thiago Alves via knockout of Diego Sanchez at UFC 90

''I know I'm going to knock him out. It doesn't matter what round.... I want to put on an exciting fight for the fans. Diego is a pretty tough guy, but I can knock him out. But I have to take him down and submit him, I'll do that. I'll be on top of my game.''
-- Thiago Alves shares his prediction (a knockout) with the Chicago Sun-Times for his upcoming welterweight scrap with Diego Sanchez at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25. "The Pitbull" has every reason to be confident -- he is riding impressive back-to-back technical knockout wins over top contenders, Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan. The winner of this fight will likely land a spot behind BJ Penn as the next 170-pound title challenger or at the very least earn a berth in a number one contender eliminator match.

They should match up Rumble Johnson/Koscheck. The winner of that fights the winner of Alves/Sanchez for a title shot. Sound good?
by the_mexicutioner on Aug 16, 2008 10:38 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I disagree, Alves deserves a title shot if he beats Sanchez and Rumble Johnson is nowhere near a shot right now
by Haze on Aug 16, 2008 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Far from it. Rumble needs a string of wins to be even considered for title contention. IF Diego isn’t careful on this one, like if he comes storming out at the sound of the bell, he might get KTFO by Alves. Just look at Gamburyan, came storming out, just to be knocked out by Emerson. This fight also has the potential to end like that just because Alves has such heavy hands. Diego should better watch out if he wants to win against the pitbull!

Diego cant win this fight! I am telling all of you guys that Alves will win this fight. I told you guys that Karo was going to get KO by Alves and you all laughed at me. I told you that Alves would KO Hughes with a flying knee, and you all laughed at me again. Trust me on this, alves is going to KNock Diego out! Alves is on eof the biggest welterweights in the sport, Diego is one of the smallest. Diego couldnt even take down Luigi, so he can Forget about
Taking down Alves. Diego wont be able to take Alves down, and he will feel confident in his new and improved standup, that will be his downfall because No way Diego can last 15 minutes standing up with Diego.
Alves by KO…Take that to the bank, I know I have. Since April. Alves has won me a nice amount of money and I dont see that changing in the future!

Diego will win. I think everyone picked Alves to beat Karo and Hughes. I know I did. He will lose you money this time. But hey what do I know.

I guess you’re right mexicutioner. We know nothin’. This fight looks as even as it seems when it comes to match-ups. John, do you already know the odds for this one?

I think ur right John, Diego’s standup isn’t as good and he proabably won’t be able to take Alves down. I think Diego does have a decent chance to submit him if the fight stays on the ground.

If Sanchez loses, Ill be able to admit I was wrong. Will you do the same when Alves in fact loses? Did I say you didn’t know anything? Those are your word there Neg. You guys take things too personal. No matter who wins, my life goes on.

And Thiago is gonna get murdered in this fight.

Rumble’s not ready for that stiff of competition, Even tho it was a TERRIBLE call in his last fight, Rumble was’nt totally dominating a average fighter. But Alves and Sanchez will be a good one.

I agree with you that Rumble isn’t ready for Koscheck, but he was dominating Pokey. That guy mustered no offense other than the eye gouges.

Rumble vs. Marcus Davis would be more appropriate for Rumble at this stage in his career!
Or, Rumble vs. Swick

WOAH he’s 2-2 guys. Let’s give him and interim belt so he doesn’t even have to be 3-2 to get his belt. Rumble looked very mediocre in his last fight, even without the eye poke he didn’t look good. That dude that poked him shouldn’t even be in the UFC trying to slap people instead of jabbing. And yes I know the guys hand was broken, but why even except a match against AJ with a broken hand?

he did say that if he had to take him down and submit him, he would. i would love to see him try that. koscheck went for 1 takedown and got reversed quick. fitch got him down put pretty much just held him there. he sounds a little to overcofident with his wins over old man hughes and an out of shape karo. we’ll see come oct. he’s defenitley capable of beating sanchez, but doing it is another matter. if he doesnt think diego can beat him he will be in for a big surprise. and he damn well better make wieght this time! this is a big fight ,but so was hughes and he couldnt come close.

I say if he doesn’t make weight the fat bastard should be forced out of the WW division. Also if he does win he should have to beat one more guy and make weight in that fight before they let him fight for the title. It would just be shitty if he got a title fight after this and didn’t make weight, which he seems to have a problem doing.

bold words by alves.the question is can he even make weight.hes coming off a good ko of a washed up hughes and a good ko of an overrated parysian ill give him that but diego took fitch the distance and caught him in some decent submissions and posters on here are saying alves takedown defence has improved.believe me if he can take fitch down he can take alves down.im gonna stick my neck out and say with his improved game diego by ud.

I like Alvez, but there is no way he will “take him down and submitt him.” Diego is a tough SOB and this will be an awesome fight. The only way I see Alves KOing Diego is from a perfectly placed knee when Diego shoots, which is unlikely because Diego will set up his shots with good combos, unlike Hughes. As far as I am concerened this is the main event of the night in what is shaping up to be a pretty good card.

Sanchez lost a split decision to Fitch. Alves was TKO’d by Fitch. Yes, Alves has gotten better since then but its not like Diego has gotten worse. Diego is just as good as he’s been, if not better. Then some will say, “Yeah, but Alves beat Hughes.” Is Hughes even relevant in the division anymore aside from the Serra grudge match? In my opinion Sanchez takes this one.
by the_mexicutioner on Aug 16, 2008 11:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs

No Fitch vs AJ next and Rumble will knock his ass out!.. I think Diego will win this fight too, and he would dominate Hughes too, Hughes physique isn’t there anymore and that’s the thing he had, there are alot of guys with much better physique these days and he can’t compete with them..

by jdawg on Aug 16, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s a horrible fact of life/misconception jdawg. These rules are there for a reason. If someone doesn’t make weight, they might be more fresh for a fight cuz they didn’t work as hard to cut weight. But that is no where near the biggest advantage. Let’s say someone is with almost NO body fat is 4 pounds heavier. It’s not like 4 pounds in WEIGHT makes a big difference, rather it’s the power that 4 pounds of MUSCLE WEIGHT gives to a guy. If one goes to the gym and puts on just a couple of pounds in muscle their strength is increased exponentially compared to what is was before. The bad thing is that if a fighter did refuse a fight for that reason, he would chastized more than the pu$$y who didn’t make weight, and the losers would be we the fans.

Diego will win by submission. Alves has won his last two fights by a big knee. Anderson Silva’s favorite strike..knee. Wanderlie uses knees. Other than Chuck the best strikers in UFC are those who knee to the head. GSP would kill Alves. I see no way Alves could win against GSP. Sanchez beat Fitch in my opinion and lost a snooze fest to Kos. Those are his only losses. Hazelette and Sanchez are the best BJJ guys at 170. If Penn wins he and Sanchez would be an awesome fight.
by scott on Aug 16, 2008 4:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Penn and Sanchez? Are you out of your mind. The only fight you, me and everyone else in the world will see BJ Penn fight in at 170 lb is a TITLE MATCH with GSP. No way he is going to be forced to fight a contender match against the likes of Deigo or Kos, or any other 170 lb fighter for that matter. If we dont see a Penn vs. GSP then we dont see BJ fighting at that weight at all. As for Thiago and Sanchez………..well this could be a good one. Thiago has looked very impressive in his last couple fights but those are wins over Karo, and Hughes. I think Thiago must KO the NIGHTMARE in round #1 or he will slowly lose control of the fight to the point were Diego just wears Alves down and eventually Alves sucumbs to the relentlessness of Diego. I say Diego wins by unanimous decision.

Penn/Sanchez would probably be a quick fight with BJ winning in the first or second round. i doubt Deigo would come out NOT aggressive, in which Penn would get the better or the exchanges or scrambles.. I’d say Penn by rear naked choke.

Diego one of the most boring fighters in MMA. You must have some serious hate for Diego to come out with a statement like that. Diego always tries to make a fight exciting and the Diaz, Karo fights are two of the best. If you do not like the guy for whatever reason that is up to you, but to call him one of the most boring fighters in MMA is a bit over the top. He didn’t pick on you at school or steal a girlfriend off of you by any chance did he. That might explain it.

in fitch an sherks defense, they’ve only lost to their respective division champs one time, and both losses have only been those champs’ first title defenses. its still a long way before either one can be compared to a middleweight rich franklin or a welterweight matt hughes.

i think Fitch is better than what he showed and the same to Sherk. Especially Sherk. He was dumbass to stand with BJ and think he could box when GSP mauled this guy standing. Notice how I didn’t say either would win, but if both rematched and had a logical and decent gameplan then I think they would not get beat as bad, but still get beat nonetheless.

Everyone gets derailed and set back by someone. Diego got it from koschcheck. He was way to cocky and thinking he is unbeatable like someone else i know (alves). Diego had to regroup and start over. Well put Trevor Black. My money is on The Nightmare. Diego has been an absolute beast since TUF 1. You gotta remember, Diego has never had his bell rung, not once. He’s NEVER been knocked out, and I’ve never even seen his legs wobble. I realize Diego isn’t at GSP’s level, and I know certain guys (Fitch) may give him a problem, but the fact is, this kid is an old school, tough as nails Mexican kid….I think he wins this fight. If he does lose, I can guarantee he won’t get knocked out. Having said that, how does Alves win this fight, by decision?? No chance. This has the makings of an incredible fight….could be fight of the year. Alves has incredible stand-up, but Diego is a fearless fighter, he’ll stick his nose in there. Buckle up for this one, it’s gonna be good.

Diego is a good fighter and a hard worker, but Diego and GSP? God i think GSP would kill him. As for Alves Sanchez Im torn between wanting to see a stand up fight because those are always cool with Alves but i think i wouldnt mind seeing some ground work. Does anyone remember that Alves claims BJJ his primary style? He is a teacher in Brazil. He has yet to show it in UFC ’cause he says stand up wows the crowd but i wanna see what he can do against another BJJ.
by Chris on Aug 29, 2008 1:10 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Interesting comment that Alves claims BJJ his primary style. I noticed that as well, and I have to wonder how legit of a claim that is. I was watching Spike reruns the other night, and I completely forgot about his fight with Spencer Fisher, in which Alves was choked out by Fisher in the 3rd round…..And Fisher is by no means a BJJ expert. I realize that was some time ago, and his skills have improved greatly since then, but I have a feeling his Black Belt might be a bit more difficult to attain in a different camp.
