UFC 88 BLOW-BY-BLOW LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY::
Druby here ready for some blood and guts MMA. It should be a big night of fights so sit back relax and soak it in. Lets ride Maniacs.
Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans (205-pound limit)
Round one: Evans crouched low looking for a shot. Evans light on his feet not standing in one spot too long. Chuck stalking Evans. Chuck with a right to the chin. Evans on his heels looking to avoid Liddells range. Big right hook from Evans and that punch had some giddy up on it. Lidell answers with a good right. Lidells being patient. Leg kick from Evans. Left hook from Evans. LIddell misses with a right. Chuck circling and stalking. Rashad just dancing and staying out of range, Leg kick from Evans. Nice right hook from Evans and Chuck lands a jab. Nice right from Liddell. Chuck with a small cut over his right eye. Liddell goes for a jab. Inside leg kick from Evans and Liddell lands a left hook, Liddell with an uppercut. Evans backed into a corner but he dances out. Chuck with a roundhouse head kick to end the round. Chuck has a big mouse underneath his eye, That was a close round it could go either way. Id say Chuck 10-9.
Round two: Evans corner tells him hes pissing off Chuck by dancing around his punches. It seems his strategy is to bob and weave. Good kick from Chuck and then a right. Rashad lands two good lefts. Lidell with a right and hes backing him into a corner. Evans just dances away. NIce left hook from Evans. Evans just misses a right and now hes seeming alot more confident. OMG Evans throws a HUGE right and Chuck Liddell is OUT COLD. A ONE PUNCH KO FROM RASHAD EVANS. CHUCK LIDDELL IS LYING ON THE FLOOR AND NOT RESPONDING. EVANS KNOCKS OUT LIDDELL WITH ONE PUNCH!!!! OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW. EVANS COLDCOCKED LIDDELL. 3 MINUTES AFTER THE PUNCH AND LIDDELL IS STILL OUT COLD. UNBELIEVABLE.
Round three:
Final result: Rashad Evans defeats Chuck Liddell via KO Round 2
-end-
Rich Franklin vs. Matt Hamill (205-pound limit)
Round one: Hamill circling Franklin. Leg kick from Franklin. Franklin with another leg kick looking to create distance. Hamill with a leg kick then jab. Uppercut from Hamill. Franklin leg kick. Jab from Franklin and then a leg kick. Right from Franklin. Leg kick from Franklin. Jab from Hamill. Franklin cut above his eye, he lands a leg kick. Hamill surprisingly not trying to take Rich down. Leg kick from Franklin. Both fighters exchange rights. Leg kick from Franklin. Body shot from Franklin and Hamill with a take down. Rich now going for an armbar but Hamill breaks free. Hamill is now cut also. BIG knee on the way up from Franklin. Another big knee from Franklin. Thats the bell. Somewhat unspectacular 1st rd, id give it to Franklin 10-9 but it could go either way.
Round two: Leg kick from Franklin and Hamill catches the leg briefly. BIg head kick from Rich and a good right hook to follow. The fight is stopped to cut away a flap of skin from Franklins cut. Nice combo from Franklin. Franklin body kick. Jab and uppercut from Hamill. Big head kick from Franklin. Leg kick from Franklin. The ref stops it from a kick to the groin from Franklin. Front kick from Hamill. Head kick from Franklin and a good right left combo. Hamill needs to get this to the ground hes just eating kicks and punches. Now their clinched up against the fence and Rich lands a kick. Jab from Hamill. Body kick from Franklin. Leg kick from Franklin. Uppercut from Hamill but theres nothing behind it. Body kick from Franklin. Leg kick from Franklin. Leg kick from Franklin. Hamill catches a leg but doesnt capitalize and lets Franklin go. Hamill is just standing there like a sparring partner and not going for take downs. Hamill catches Franklins leg again but does nothing with it but just hold
it out there. Thats the bell. Franklin is picking Hamill apart hes not doing anything to win the fight. Hes not trying take downs or throwing good punches hes just circling and standing there. His game plan is confusing. 10-9 Franklin.
Round three: Hamill has no urgency. Body kick from Franklin. Knee to the body from Franklin and a kick, and Franklin lands a HUGE liver kick and Hamill goes down. Thats it its all over Franklin wins. Franklin looked impressive on his feet, but in all fairness Hamill looked horrible the whole night. No striking and only 2 take down attempts. Hamill looked more like a sparring partner than he did a contender. Franklin with a great showing, but I think Matt Hamill took a step back in his progression as a fighter. The big stage might have gotten to him but the stand out wrestler didnt fight to his strengths and basically just stood and took punishment from Franklin. Nice win for Franklin, Hamill needs some work.
Final result: Rich Franklin defeats Matt Hamill via TKO Round 3
-end-
Dan Henderson vs. Rousimar Palhares (185-pound limit)
Round one: Hendo with a low crouched stance looking to counter the shot of Palhares early. His right is cocked. Palhares shoots and Hendo lands a big right and then Hendo starts swinging for the fences and almost gets caught in a submission. Back to the feet and Palhares shoots and is stuffed. Stuffed again by Hendo. Palhares switches to southpaw. Big body kick from Hendo and a big right from Hendo. Wheel kick from Palhares. Palhares shoots and misses. Hendo is looking to counter the shot with his big right, Head kick from Palhares. Good jab from Palhares and Hendo just misses a HUGE right. Lazy head kick from Palhares. Jab from Palhares. Palhares charges and Hendo lands a BIG right hook. Palhares is down. Palhares back to the feet and throws 3 wild kicks. WOW great action. Hendo locked and cocked with the right. Jab from Palhares. Good jab from Hendo. Palhares back to righty stance. Palhares shoots and gets on top of Hendo. 30 seconds left. Palhares moves to half guard and Hendo holding onto his head. Hendo will wait out the round, good defense from Hendo. Palhares just missed locking in a knee bar but the bell stopped him. 10-9 Hendo do to his BIG right from the feet.
Round two: Jab from Hendo. Palhares shoots and misses then goes for a head kcik and Hendo ducks and tosses him to the ground. Palhares shoots and picks up Hendo and lands a HUGE slam. WOW that looked like a power bomb what a great take down. Palhares postures up and Hendo goes for a triangle and now Palhares locked in a heel hook!!! Hendo though throws a big right and slips out. Back to the feet. Hendo with a left and big right. Front kick from Palhares. Palhares shoots and now Hendo gets on top and lands a right. Hendo now covering Palhares mouth trying to disrupt his breathing. Hendo with a right from the top. Palhares with full guard. Palhares looking to sweep Hendo. Hendo still trying to interrupt his breathing. Herb Dean stands them up. Both fighters getting their breath. Good right from Hendo. Leg kick from Palhares. Head kick from Palhares. Hendo misses a BIG right to end the round. Once again id give it to Hendo 10-9.
Round three: Jab from Hendo. Jab from Palhares. Hendo with an uppercut and Palhares lands a heel kick. Jab from Palhares. Back to southpaw from Palhares. Head kick missed from Palhares. Hendo with a jab. Sprawl from Hendo then a glancing right. Jab from Hendo stops a shot. BIG right from Hendo and another. Over the top right from Palhares. Big right from Hendo. Palhares swinging wildly. Hendo looking for a spot to use his big right. The fans are booing. Big left from Hendo. 2 minutes left. The pace has slowed to a crawl. BIG right from Hendo and Palhares tries to land one of his own. Shot from Palhares and he sprawls out and their back to the feet. Big right from Hendo. Jab from Palhares. Palhares needs to go for broke. Big right from Hendo and Palhares now gets a leg, but Hendo slips out again. Jab from Palhares he doesnt seem desperate enough. Palhares shoots and Hendo sprawls out once again. BIG right from Hendo and now he lands two more BOMBs while Palhares is on the ground. Thats the bell. Hendo had to have won this 30-27, he sprawled and brawled the whole fight to perfection and comes out with a win.
Final result: Dan Henderson defeats Rousimar Palhares via Unanimous Decision
-end-
Nate Marquardt vs. Martin Kampmann (185-pound limit)
Round one: Jab from Nate. Both go for a kick and hit each others knee. Nice right hook from Kampmann. Nate with a big kick to the head, Nate with a short elbow to the head and then a big knee from Nate. Martin is hurt!!! Nate is landing combo's all over 5 unanswered shots!!! Kampmann falls to the ground and Nate landing HUGE blows. Thats it its all over!! Nate DESTROYS Kampmann. That my friends is a complete ass whooping if there ever was one. WOW. Nate is a monster.
Round two:
Round three:
Final result: Nate Marquardt defeats Martin Kampmann via TKO (Strikes) Round 1
-end-
Matt Brown vs. Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim (170-pound limit)
Round one: Leg kick from Brown. Nice left from Kim now Brown goes for a clinch and Kim takes him to the ground. Brown scrambles but gives his back to Kim and Kim gets the hooks. Brown is out and back to his feet, but Kim has his back again and locks in a rear naked but Brown slips out. Brown escapes once again but Kim AGAIN jumps onto his back right away. Brown on his feet now bending over and Kim is slipping off. Now Brown gets Kim to the ground and Brown is on top. Knee to the body from Brown. Head kick from Brown and another big left kick that lands flush on Kim. Brown misses a HUGE spinning back fist. Kim now going for a take down but Brown stifles his attempt and now Brown lands a knee from the clinch and their locked up against the fence. Kim goes for a judo throw and Brown winds up on top and now Brown is sinking in a choke, but Kim can slip out. Brown lets it go and spins but now Kim has his back again and hes looking for hooks. Thats the bell, Brown came on strong late in the round but id give that one 10-9 to Kim b/c he was constantly looking for submissions.
Round two: Leg kick from Brown and now a head kick. Nice right from Brown, and Brown with a left to the body. Leg kick from Brown and a head kick. Jumping knee from Kim but he slips and falls to the ground. Brown with a knee to the body and Kim looks hurt. Kim shoots for a take down but Brown sprawls out briefly. Brown now in a dominate position. Back to the feet. Now their clinched against the fence. Brown with some punishing knees to the body. Brown takes him down and now is in Kims full guard. Kim with a high guard looking for a triangle, but Brown pops out and now is posturing up. Great upkick from Kim. Spinning back fist from Brown on the top. Knee to the body from Brown. Kim swings and misses and Brown with a great one two combo that lands flush. Kim now down to the ground. Brown on top looking for an arm triangle. Round three: Brown looks in great shape. Kick to the body from Brown. Kim with an uppercut thats a glancing blow. The ref stops it b/c Brown had no mouthpiece. Left hook from Kim. Brown with a leg kick. Followed by another kick. Another kick from Brown. Superman punch but its misses. Kim now dodges a punch and gets a take down. Brown trying to work off his back. Brown slips out and is right back to the feet. Brown now working out of the clinch. Knees to the body from Brown hes landing them at will and using them to his advantage. Knee to the thigh from Brown. Brown now has Kims leg in the clinch and lands 3 unanswered rights to the body. Big left hook from Kim. Now their clinched. Kim gets a take down. Brown with butterfly guard. Kim working shots to the body. Brown avoiding damage keeping full guard. Brown with elbows from the bottom. Nice elbow from Kim, Brown is cut bad over his right eye from the elbow. Brown trying to scramble out from the bottom and Kim trying to hold on looking for a submission. Thats the bell, it could be a close one. Id give it to Brown as he won the most minutes throughout the fight, but Kim could have stole it in the end. Its a toss up, but im going Brown.
Final result: Dong Hyun Kim defeats Matt Brown via Split Decision
-end-

does anyone think rashad has a chance? he’s a wreslter fighting one of the best take down stuffers today. He’s gonna catch a bunch of shots after chuck stuffs him. Not really a fan of either guy, looking forward to Franklin showing Hammill to an early retirement. I hope he hits him so hard he hears a ringing!

I’ll go with Hendo. But don’t be surprised if Palhares pulls off the upset. Look at a Bjj blackbelt like Silva did to Hendo, chocked him out!…but of course, Palhares is a far cry from the Spider, so I’d go with Hendo on this one!

I was on 5 out of 6 for an accumulator and this was supposed to be the most comfortable fight of the night and that happens..well this IS MMA and that was an UPSET!!
WOW what can I say….

I think Rashad has a chance, he seems to have a really good chin and Chuck hasn’t had a knock out in a really long time….fight doesn’t make sense to me, chuck is on his last legs, a loss to Rashad would be bring his stock way down. How do we go from Shogun vs Chuck, to this? Still a great card.

I think Rashad has about as much chance as Tito. These 2 have the same style and are so close they fought to a draw. It’s going to be Liddell-Ortiz all over again.
by Gord on Aug 15, 2008 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would agree with you if it was the same Chuck of Dec 06. It isn’t. He is banged up, had problems with weight and his body is breaking down. Rashad has more heart in his left pinky than Tito does in his whole body. Rashad will win. Love Chuck but it’s a new era of MMA fighter. It passed Hughes by and tonight it will pass The Iceman by.Love the guy, he is one of my favorite fighters of all time.

kevin, I’m a huge Franklin fan (and have respect for Hammill’s accomplishments)so I’m looking for Rich to put a beatdown on him. Mainly so the not-always-applicable MMA math will stop the Bisping nuthuggers from saying Franklin would lose to the Count! And I am going WAY into crazyland and saying Rashad DOES have a chance for a huge upset. Don’t know why, cuz he really isn’t better at anything than Chuck. Maybe b/c it’ll throw a wrench in the works for the UFC’s plan for an easier road to the belt for Chuck. Maybe Rashad, who can take a lot of punishment, will pull something out of his @ss. Just sometimes you have to go with the underdog.

wow, u really think Franklin is that good to retire Hamil? I’d actually like to see Hamil retire Franklin. Loss # 3 in last 2 yrs from Franklin comin tonight. ;) But, as u and any mma fan knows…You just can never know who is gonna be at the top op their game…

whatever happened to that high head kick he used on sean salmon? oh yeah, that was sean salmon.
by b.w. on Aug 14, 2008 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Followed by some cheap shots afterwards, I thought that was some serious bull. The guy was sleeping as he was falling and Rashad follows up by punching him a couple more times. Although if I fought a guy who looked likes Sean Salmon, I’d want to punch him in the face as much as possible to. Anyway here are my picks,
Chuck 2nd TKO (although a highlight KO would be great)
Franklin 1st TKO
Hendo 2nd KO
Kampman 2nd TKO (I’m thinking he gets beat up prior tho)
I also hope Karo loses and makes up some more excuses
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Aug 14, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cogito, I totally agree with those picks. And if they go down like you say we should be able to see the Tavares/Pelligrino fight, that should be a war.
Rashad will get his. This is a taylor made fight for Rashad to get KTFO and get his first taste of defeat. IMO, he has not improved at all since TUF. He is the same exact fighter, with a little better striking. He will get schooled by Chuck and then good night.
by BNF on Aug 14, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I couldn’t agree more, thats why I really like this card. The potential for quick fights is there and we could see some of the undercard fights which I would be thinking Tavares finishes Pelligrino in the second. Rashad really does not have any skills that make him stand out from all the rest, his wrestling is his best ability here but there is no kick in his takedowns which really means he’s going to get hurt against Liddell. I love Franklin and Hendo and maybe this will build toward a possible fight between the two. I’d actually like it if Franklin fought someone more relative to the LHW division but Hamill does come game to fight at least. The fight I’m most interested in seeing is Kampman and Marquardt, that has fight of the night written on it.

by WB on Aug 14, 2008 2:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I got Chuck winning by TKO
Franklin by Decision
Karo by…………………decision
Kampmann via Split Decision
Pellegrino by Decision
I also got James Lee, Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim, and Jason Lambert all winning.
I am reluctant to pick a winner on Hendo/Palhares. As most of you know, I am a big fan of Hendo. However, Rousimar’s BJJ has me worried sick!!! Everyone says that his BJJ is even sicker than Maia’s. However, the good think for Hendo is that Palhares is still mostly a BJJ guy as opposed to a well rounded MMAist. Hendo should use his wrestling to keep the fight off of the floor and just whale away with that right hand. If Hendo stays standing, he will KO Rousimar with ease. However, if he takes the fight to the floor to prove a point or something, he will be in serious danger. I see this fight ending in one of two ways, Hendo by KO or Palhares by Submission.
As far as bets are concerned, so far I bet on Liddell and I also have a paraly on Liddell and Franklin. I was about to wager on Kampmann straight up yesterday while he was +120. Just checked today and he is now Even. I have really started to like to jump on certain fights as soon as the odds are posted as opposed to waiting until the day of the fight because I have been getting much better odds on particular fights. For example, I got Chuck at -260 and he’s now -280. And the event is still what, 4 weeks away?

u got james lee winning?? the guy lost to sakara, do you really think he stands a chance of winning boetsch?
this is an amazin card the 2 fights i will be most interested in is
franklin vs hamill and kampmann vs nate (kampmann is 1 of my fav fighters)
ohh and the hendo fight all the others i see as 1 sided

You’re right for most of it except for a couple. Tavares 2nd round sub, Dong Hyun Kim by TKO 1 rd, Jucao by UD, and Toquinho 1rd sub. (I will always pick toquinho against anyone, if you see the intent with which he subs people – it’s like he knows he/his family can’t go back to living the way they did. Better someone else gets a permanent career ending injury than go back to that.)

by ViolentMike on Aug 14, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
throwing money on Rusimar for sure! I have been waiting for an underdog like him for a while now. aS much as I love Hendo, financially I willbe going with Palhares via submission.
by john on Aug 14, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you guys serious with Palhares? He comes into the UFC and submitts a guy with 1 foot in the grave and now he is going to beat Hendo, who is coming off 2 loses. I just don’t see it happening.
by BNF on Aug 14, 2008 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
john you sound silly in THIS! argument. One good sub against Salaverry (who was done as a fighter) and this guy can beat Hendo? Hendo is going to smash Palhares!
by JV on Aug 14, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Difference between me and you, is that I have actually seen all of this guys fights, which actually makes me qualified to speak on the matter. I dont know how you can even knock the guy when you have only seen him fight once for like 15 seconds.
Hendo is 1 of my favorite fighters and he is the household name against an unknown fighter, so on paper Hendo is the sexy pick. In reality Rusimar will win this fight. Unfortunately because I hate to see Hendo loose.
by john on Aug 14, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
John, Hendo won’t lose this one. His Greco-Roman skills are just too much for Palhares’ jitz. Hendo will just pull half-guard and GNP Palhares to death!…Now if Palhares decides to stand and bang, then it’s his funeral because he’s just too small to stand with Hendo and knock him out.
by TheNegation on Aug 17, 2008 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There’s nothing sexy or trendy about picking Hendo to beat a relative unknown.
by ballhawkdawk on Sep 5, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
John is such a true Hendo fan that he is betting against him. Maybe when you work for Zuffa ( laughes uncontrollably) you can tell him that.

I agree there is a chance he might lose. Palhares’ jiu jitsu is pretty sick. Im pulling for Hendo though. He is one of my favorite fighters and have met him twice in California. He seemed pretty cool and down to earth. And if he does lose its not the end of the world. Wandi lost three in a row and he’s still doing ok.
by the_mexicutioner on Aug 14, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But only one of those fights was in the UFC. Hendo would be 0-3 in his return to the octagon.

Forget Boetsch, he can man handled by Hamill. The undercard fight I want to see most is Kurt Pellegrino vs Thiago Tavares. I’ve never seen a boring Batman fight and Thiago has to be out to prove a point after losing to the Handsome one…

No way i am spending $50 to see Liddell Evans as a main event. Ridiculous. In all reality if it wasn’t for TUF we could be seeing Nog defend his belt. With 5 weight divisions there should be a title fight every PPV. This is a weak card other than the Hendo fight. Thats the only one that piques my interest.

Palhares will lose
by Kory on Aug 14, 2008 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Matt Hamill can/will beat Rich and I think Henderson will win. I also think Rashad if he doesn’t get caught in the first couple of minutes will beat Chuck. Kampman will win.
by Mike on Aug 14, 2008 3:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Chuck is a joke…Rashad will win either by decision or Chuckles will get winded by second round and Rashad will send him packing back to where he needs to be..a nice little place called “Retirement” Now granted I hate Rashad too but why does Chuckles deserve a slot in the main event? Furthermore if he wins and gets a title shot, I am DONE with the UFC. I guess all you have to do is win one fight out of 3 and all of a sudden you become a contender…well win one and be Dana’s boyfriend always helps too! The best thing about this card is Jason Lambert. He is going to kill some cats at the new weight class! He is going to be a HUGE 185lber…hope Jason Day has a good dental plan because he will be picking up his teeth off the mat!

it will be 2 of 3 or two in a row cuz he beat wandi if that helps you to be able to handle this atrocity. i dont think chuck is more deserving than machida myself, but you cant overlook what chuck has done for the ufc. he held on to the lhw belt longer than rampage or randy did and at one point had 7 straight ko’s. i dont think you can hold it against chuck that he is fighting against rashad either cuz he was supposed to fight rua until both suffered injuries. maybee rashad will win and then dana would have to give the title shot to the winner of machida/silva.

in a perfect world we would have chuck/shogun and hendo/franklin, but this is still a good fight card. marquardt/kampann was a very nice late addition. on the undercard, i would like to see chonan/carnero 1rst. all these fights i think are interesting imo.
by b.w. on Aug 14, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What about the Tavares/Pelligrino fight? That fight has the potential to be a high paced, back and forth war.
I still like this card as well. Chuck is my favorite, Franklin’s first at 205, Hendo after dropping 2 in a row, rooting agaisn’t Karo, and finally Kapmann/Marquardt, all of this is well worth my 45 bucks!

I think Rashad has a chance, and even though I am not really a fan of his, I will be rooting for him because it will piss off Dana and the UFC if he wins and Forrest will not be able to keep running from Machida because he will have no choice but to fight him if Machida gets past Silva. As far as I am concerned He deserves the shot whether or not you think he is boring or not or whether he finishes a fight. Bottom line is he wins and it is down to his opponent to stop that. I do not think that it is coincidence that Dana and the UFC have put two non english speaking fighters, who potentialy could both be champions against each other. I like Chuck, but I am just pissed at the way things are arranged around who will make the most money or what the majority of the fans will want. All fighters should have a fair and equal shot.
by Ade on Aug 14, 2008 4:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hamill v Franklin to me seems like a very lopsided fight.I can’t see Hamill being anywhere near ready to fight Rich, Dana must have changed his mind on Hamill’s marketability or something. I mean the guy is 4-1 and has to fight the former champion who has only lost 2 fights since 2003 to a true world class champion in Anderson Silva!
Hope he proves me wrong and brings a good fight but I can’t see it.

I seem to be the only one picking Matt Hammill. I know Rich has great takedown defence, but he’s never fought a wrestler like Matt Hammill. I think Hammill is big enough and strong enough to take Franklin down, hold him down, avoid submissions and do some damage from inside the guard. I think Hammill does just enough to earn a decision.

First off im sick to death of people on here talking shit about one of the greatest mma fighters of all time (chuck liddell) The guy dominated the division for years got beat twice and all of a sudden he was to retire! only to return and defeat one of the most dangerous fighters in the world (wandi)in style, maybe the greatest ufc fight to date Was the same not said of randy by some of you when chuck knocked him out twice?? Look what happened there!!!!!
Further you cry on about liddell not deserving a title shot?? Rampage won 1 fight against a guy that shouldnt be a way to the title in The beastman Eastman, nobody slated that!! Liddell deserves a title shot for more than one reason, the key one being he dominated this division for years, longer than any other figher and against the best, and wiped the floor with them all, he never ducks a fight, and infact is one of few fighters who will accept fights against guys that have beat him, and able to turn the tables and beat them (rampage excluded). I agree machida may deserve a title shot, however that doesnt mean liddell doesnt!!

He WANTED to fight Rampage after Rampage already TKO and KO’d him..Chuck’s got one more run left I think. Give him 3 or 4 more fights and he will retire anyway.

I say give rashad to wandy, my boy will take care of business as always. now that rashad beat chuck, a win over him will be sufficient for the axe murderer to get a title shot.
by linx on Sep 7, 2008 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How would beating Rashad = title shot? It would be a rock-paper-scissors scenario (Wand beats Shad beats Chuck beats Wand), so it wouldn’t make Wandy a clear #1 contender, although it would be great to see Wandy in a 5-rounder again. Unless Wandy fights and beats Lyoto then beats Sugar, which would make him the number 1 contender w/o a doubt.
by Pat on Sep 7, 2008 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree linx. Wandy would push the pace with Rashad. A pace that Rashad has never seen before and Wandy would F%ck his a$$ up before he would be able to get a lucky counter like that. The only person I really see giving Wandy any problems in this division is Machida.

Chuck was so sick when he was in his prime, but now he’s clearly past it. 2 years ago, Chuck would have connected first, but he’s lost a fraction of a second in his hand speed, and that’s all it takes to lose a fight. 1-3 in his last 4 fights now.

Machida can cut in front of Evans when he does something like Rashad did. I was just like everyone else before the fight hating on Evans. But, they both are undefeated and Rashad wins with style and that’s what it’s about. Evans is just as good as Machida and more interesting = Evans v Forrest 10x more interesting then Machida. UFC is in the business of interesting fights and fighters and Rashad has what Lyoto doesn’t.

Chuck came out exactly like he did against Jardine. He was showing his frustration, and seemed tentative to me. He did not have the same focus when he fought Vandy. I guess he needs a deep rooted reason, or maybe a grudge to win a fight. That’s when it’s time to start thinking about getting out (IMO).
You gotta give Rashad props, but I still can’t stand his antics. So, I guess I have another great foe to root against, that woks for me.
By the way, Franklin looked great, and proved that he really is a great fighter, which in turn, also proves once again how amazing A.Silva is.

Chuck’s body is looking a bit old, his prime days are behind him, he’s still got some mileage on him for some great fights, but he’s a tad slower, a tad puffier, a tad more or less in all the wrong ways.

that was the greatest knockout in the history of the ufc. WOW. I mean I don’t want to say I told you Rashad Evans was going to defeat Chuck, but you know what. I did. All of you hated on me that I said that Rashad was going to win. So ha.
But wow, that kockout sent chills up my spine. I thought Chuck was dead.
Also, Franklin body kick stoppage was bull. That fight sucked, and Hamill sucks in big game performances.

Chuck has abused his body for too long.
Too much partying while not taking care of himself.
The YoYo effect on his body was obvious as he looked like a middleweight fighter in a flabby skin sack.
He’s always been able to get by with his KO power.
Just get into reasonable shape, and wait for a mistake by his opponent…
Looks like Evans took a “Page” out of Rampage’s book and turned the tables on Chuck. Just wait for a mistake. Chuck threw a right uppercut (as he had a few times previous) without keeping his left up. Rashad obviously picked up on it and threw the perfect counterpunch.
Rashad vs Forrest… TUF 1 vs TUF 2… it’s a natural.
by talkman on Sep 7, 2008 1:02 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Chuck always leaves his left hand down or leading. deng, he left that whole side wide open for salmon headkick part 2 or overhand right. Rashad was saving that 1. perfect connect. it was fugly.

Rashad looked amazing. I thought he even won rd 1 with a few nice kicks, some left hooks, and a few right hands. I don’t wanna say I told you so, but I said Rashad’s athleticism would be the X factor in this fight and it proved to be the difference tonight.

I don’t like Rashad’s tentative style at times, but that guy has improved with each fight and he knows how to win. I can’t imagine him and Machida fighting lol… 20-30 punches thrown between them per round… it would be a boring fight!

There have been a few recently that have done that for me including this one. I thought Jardine was dead when Wandy knocked him out (no joke), that Markham vs. Farber knockout was spectacular! I really have to sit and think about how to rank them. They definately need to make a best knockouts of 2008 special this year.

Nice job by MacDonald. Maybe Chuck took Evans lightly. Rashad wasn’t scared of him and did what he needed to do. He’s come a long way and good for him. Thank God I gave up betting on the fights for a while. I would be in the dog for this one.
by DSmith on Sep 7, 2008 1:06 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Although I said Chuck is past his prime, I don’t think he needs to hang it up for good. He’s not champion material anymore but he’s still one of the top fighters in the division. I think he just needs some time off, then come back with a different style, maybe go to a different camp. I think he needs to start using his wrestling offensively. Maybe train with Lesnar and Sherk over in Minny. Chuck would be a solid ground-and-pound guy.

Chuck’s body is just getting older and producing more estrogen than testosterone… hench “OLD WHITE PUFFY GUY”… not everyone can be a Randy Couture.
Did u see Chuck’s old highlights?? Man’ he was naturally ripped… his body is changing and at 38 that happens… if u notice Hendo was sucking wind big time in that interview after the fight… same thing with him… 38 yrs old.
by THORAZINE on Sep 7, 2008 1:10 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I noticed Hendo gassing. Matt Hughes is in the same boat. Tough to see these guys like that. And you’re right, it makes what Randy’s doing at 45 that much more incredible.
I give Hendo even less of a chance against Anderson than he had the first fight. IMO he needs to move up to 205 where he saves 20 lbs. of cutting, and where he can make some big money fights happen before he hangs em up.

DUDES machida??? are you kidding me? that guy is a bum… RASHAD VS RAMPAGE JACKSON, winner, Light heavyweight championship fight against Forrest!
by Bobo on Sep 7, 2008 1:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Machida is a bum? Forrest Griffin said himself that Machida is the last person he wanted to fight. Machida is anything but a bum. Do you know anything about MMA?
by jimmy_dean on Sep 7, 2008 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
As a matter of fact, Wanderlei Silva turned down a fight against Machida because he didn’t have enough time to prepare and so did Brandon Vera. Anything but a bum dude.

Seriously guys, what do you think Chuck’s next move could be, being that he is one of the UFC’s main money draws?
If he gets another good (Jardine upward) fighter, he risks being taken apart badly, and it’s no good for the UFC to have Chuck as a main event and losing all the time.
If he starts getting fed tomato cans, he loses all the glitz of his stardom, ESPECIALLY when placed on the main event, which you know is bound to happen. Fans and non-fans alike can see right through that crap.
Seems like his main asset is actually his main curse…

WOWWWWWWW is all i got to say i won a 10 buck bet with my friend …. we were at a packed winghouse and when rashad landed the overhand right the place blew up , wow it was one sick punch , liddell faceplanted like a stiff board it was the perfect end to the card…. rashad fought a counter puncher very well and deserved to win he looked good , you rush chuck you get ko’d he made chuck pissed and he got messy and got slugged . period . good job rashad i seem to be the only one that thinks you could win since about 18 percent thought so at the time of the fight .

I am now a Rashad believer. I love Chuck but I hope he retires now. I think he has lost some speed and is still one of the greatest. Rashad was so fast when they were close and swinging. Rashad baited him in by running and dancing like an a$$ but he knocked Chuck the fark out.

Why is it that when a black fighter moves around and uses strategy, or celebrates he’s an a$$?

by tuffguy01 on Sep 7, 2008 1:13 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No one is interested in Liddell/Couture 18 and Randy isn’t either. He wants Lesnar, Nog and Fedor. After that he’ll retire and let his wife take the ass whoopings.

i agree that chuck should retire, im a big fan but something tells me that he wont go out on a knockout!!

Chuck’s career is done. Rashad’s knock out looked worse than Rampage’s did. Chuck has been one of the most dominant fighters to ever fight in the sport but so was Matt Hughes. His reign in the LHW division has come to an end and it is about time he brings his legendary career to an end before he starts looking really bad. Chuck is no doubt a UFC hall of famer and in my eyes is an MMA hall of famer but enough is enough. It’s pretty obvious that Wanderlei had the octagon jitters when he fought Chuck because I think even then Chuck’s career was on a downward spiral. There is no doubt in my mind that Chuck would have beaten Rampage, Jardine, or Rashad about four years ago when his career was at it’s peek but he is not fighting very smart since he has gotten older. Rashad beat him at his own game and Rashad didn’t even beat Tito not even a year ago. I think now even Randy would win two out of three against Liddell. You could kind of see the fake ass smile that Dana White had on his face when he shook Rashad’s hand after the fight. Chuck, you have done a lot for the sport and you are one of the main reasons MMA is so popular in the USA today but the time has come, you have got to move on.

champion’s comeback baby!!! except liddel… awww.
i really like the stats.
rogan – “as bas rutten would say… kick to da leeburr” LMAO
pellengrino – MONSTER WIN! major career crossroad of opponent not used to losing. gchyea!
ace ventura – inside legkick to the sack! ewwww. superior striking as expected… not quite elite, but premier. even added some kicks and knees! great comeback.

cmon chuck fans. i love too chuck cause that mofa is a real warrior. but like any fighter father time and some young hungry beast, that is hungry like he used to be, comes along and this is the result. i dont understand all the hate on rashad. that hungry beast came with it. he aint living as good as chuck, and wants some of that cheese that chuck already has. happens to the best of em. ask tyson, ali, holmes, holyfield. father time is the real champ every time…

i definitely dont think chuck should retire, i think its another case of the old one dimensional fighters, like tito and hughes chuck is just too predictable. if i’m fighting chuck i kknow hes gonna try to knock me out so since hes been exposed already by jackson and jardine and now evans i’m gonna wait back for my opening which he will give me eventually cause i’ll piss him off with my defense running and counters, and knock him out, so he needs to switch up his game plan to throw people off, i think he should do a takedown and ground and pound his next opponent just to switch it up and make other fighters worry about more than his striking. and i’m definitely not saying i want to fight chuck lidell
by itsT.O.baby!!! on Sep 7, 2008 1:17 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Chucks not a ground n’ pounder, he doesn’t have the raw power and cardio for it in MMA style he used to shoot takedowns and gassed all the time… when he changed his style to standup he was able to preserve his energy and fight more effectively for longer periods of time.
Chuck is just too old to be a Champion again, it’s showing in his body… it’s not producing like it use to up to his mid 30’s.

if you know how to dance and move the right way, its the most effective way to fight. aint no answer for some sh;t you cant see. you can be the toughest mofa in the world, but if you cant land on a moving target and that movement zeros in on your ass. good night, sleep tight.

What we just saw was youth concering old age. Chuck is simply slower and can not match the speed of a younger guy. A one dimensional fighter against a younger faster and more atheletic fighter, who should have no business knocking out Chuck Liddell. Anyone that says that was a lucky punch is an ASS. Rashad isn’t that good, and I can name at least 5 guys that he would lose to under 32 years old. I’m sorry Chuck you just lost to a wrestler that in the past you easily took care of, please hang it up and let the younger guys take this sport forward.

Nipple twisting?
First time I saw that was with GSP vs. Fitch. Now Rashad vs. Liddell.
Is this some kinda Greg Jackson Submission Fight Club ritual or what?

Man. I was dead silent after that KO. I thought Rashad would win a decision, not THAT.
I predicted Rashad but I was rooting for Chuck.
I’ve already broken out the scotch

I heard some guy at the bar talking about how Rashad had to take Chuck down I’m like shit.
Thats what ppl have been trying for years! You can’t take chuck down you just have to out-strike him… Yeah it could end bad but at least you got a legitimate chance doing that.

Great night for me. Cya chuckie baby. U cant even win against hand picked opponents anymore. Machida gets a title shot baby! Franklin looked very sharp tonite. Would like to see him against some top tier lhws. Dan didnt look very good either looks like time has passed him by too. He looked gassed.

You know, I loved seeing Chuck knocked out, but I do have to say that Rashad is a fuggin idiot.
This is what, the second time he rushed a fighter that was CLEARLY knocked out to land another punch??? Sean Salmon and now Chuck.
Does Randy Couture do this? No, does Anderson Silva? No. A trained, skilled fighter knows when the fight is over. Rashad is just acting like an amateur jackass

When that much money is on the line and the greatest mma one punch knock artist is on the ground, you don’t take any chances of him getting up. you just hope the ref does his job.
by Paco on Sep 7, 2008 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, but Rashad did this one before. With Sean Salmon, that was no title fight.
The fact is, Rashad just doesn’t have the gift to use his eyeballs and notice when a human has been knocked unconscious.

I went for Rashad as did with Jardine, but I did see more of a descision win then knockout. I did say that only because Chuck is a better striker than Rashad that doesn’t mean that he will not get caught by Rashad who as we have seen in the past is a pretty good striker. I truly believed that Rashad had the skills to beat Chuck as I said that he is one of the most versatile wrestlers in the divsion. The haters have to show respect now. I am so glad that Dana is going to be pissed.
