Matt Hughes: 'It's going to be Matt Serra in January or February'

Props: PWB Podcast
Quoteworthy:
"Right now, I’ve talked to Joe Silva quite a few times and we’re looking at maybe January. He has told me it’s going to be Matt Serra, so I’m looking at January or February. That’ll give my knee plenty of time to heal, if [it heals] natural. If I have to go under the knife, I don’t know what my time frame will be but we'll see. Right now we're looking like January."
Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes talks about a knee injury that he sustained in his loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85: "Bedlam″ back in June, as well as his looming showdown with Matt Serra tentatively set for January. Serra and Hughes -- who are about as opposite as two people can get -- were opposing coaches in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 and were supposed to fight at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. However, Serra had to withdraw because of a serious back injury. The pair have been yapping about getting in the Octagon together for more than a year … expect more of the same until this thing is settled.

Whooo yeah! I’ve been waitin’ for this one for the longest time. MAtt Serra FTW!!
Let’s hope Matt Hughes catches one of those looping swings of Serra so that he would just think about his farm back home. I like Matt Serra’s chances on this one. But I’m sure Hughes will use his wrestling to harrass Serra’s game plan, w/c is to stand and bang..

geez, i hate both equally! here’s to me hoping for a double knockout, and a hard one at that… so it ends both of their careers simultaneously

I dont even CARE about this fight. THe UFC knows that millions of fans are going to want to see this fight so it will be bumped up to main event or co-main event status on the Jan or Feb ppv which will make the overall card, inferior to recent events. The Ufc is going to make a ton of money off a watered down fight card…I can see it now!
by john on Aug 14, 2008 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions
..maybe the UFC will listen up, and put in some counter measures.. have 3 solid fights. 3 good match ups.. to go along with the TUF beef these two. Cuz if they don’t I wouldn’t mindthem making it a UFN Main or Co main event.
by PhilQNY on Aug 14, 2008 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions
This fight took too long to happen. Most people can’t even remember why they hate each other anymore, and a bunch of other new UFC fans never even knew about their little quibble. Those of us that do remember it don’t really care.

I for one, am still interested in seeing this fight. Hughes vs Serra is a fight that MUST HAPPEN.
I never knew that two fighters needed to have a feud within the last 12 months of them fighting. It actually quite rare that two fighters fighting each other have feud, or hate each other. In this case, they fit both of those criteria.
The only problem I would have with this fight is if they tried to make it a main event of a PPV. That would just be pathetic.
I wonder if Anderson Silva will be ready to go again by then? But there is no MW deserving of a title shot… When is Okami scheduled to be back? Having Anderson defend his belt at the Main Event on the same card would work.
WHO and WHEN is Forrest going to fight???? Perhaps Forrest can have his first title defense in Jan/Feb. He can face Liddell if he wins, or even Machida with a win over Thiago Silva.
by ViolentMike on Aug 14, 2008 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
At the very best it will get co-main event status, which in my opinion is much too high especially where they are at this point in their careers. If they make this the main event, I wont be purchasing that event!
I have a feeling Forrest is going to hold on to that title for a while before stepping in the cage t try and defend it. Most 1st time UFC champs hold on to the belt for a while. I could see Forrest not fighting again till May (Lets hope not).
No idea about Okami or how long broken hands take to heal!

You may all dislike Hughes and I can’t stop you from that but I think Serra needs to be taught a lesson. Anyone who tries to proclaim that they are a good guy and a modest guy is really not and needs to eat some fist. Serra kept putting himself in the likes or GSP but as soon as GSP said he had personal issues and whatnot Serra flipped it and was an ass. I really hope Hughes wins this last fight and can retire on good ground, Serra on the other hand can go to hell.

calmn down john. thats 5 or 6 months from now and im sure the ufc will add alot more quality fights. i do agree that this should be co-main at best. hell it might be the main event on an ufn before the next tuf season starts (after mir/nog’s season). i think this fight has lost alot of its luster with the time in between their season and them both coming off losses. i actually still want to see them fight so i can see serra ko hughes or sub him and he will indeed do that.

Alright, I know everybody hated hughs, and i do also, But there no why I see him Losing to Matt the one hit wonder Serra, He got lucky with GSP, in the rest of his Career, he hasn’t been as impresive as Hughes. Hughes is going to win. then he and matt serra should both retire. this is going to look similar to GSP serra 2.

You, sir, are a HATER. If you look at Serra’s career, you’d have more respect for him. He fought a great fight against BJ

You did? Let’s just hurry up and have Hughes beat Serra so he can retire and we won’t have to hear about this tired soap opera between the two of them anymore. We also won’t have to hear banjo music playing to usher Hughes to the Octagon anymore.

I found his book so boring that I had to skip through parts of it. Liddell’s book was somewhat better though. I refuse to purchase Couture’s book.

I hope to God that Serra wins. The only time that Hughes comes even remotely close to being a decent human being is when loses. At least he can be humble in defeat. But if Hughes wins, he’ll turn back into that insufferable high-school jock with the smarmy cockiness.
Besides, I think that people have been too quick to write off Matt Serra. I’d love to see him shut some mouths with this win.

What a ridiculous comment – completely offside.
I realize you’re probably fifteen and haven’t likely seen Hughes’ fights, but I gotta tell you – Hughes has earned main event status and ppv status as a two time ww champ and one of the most successful fighters of all time.

I never liked Matt Hughes, but I understand all the contributions he made to the UFC, and I believe he’s one of the best Welterweights in MMA history. HOWEVER, his arrogance and smart a$$ comments, espcially towards his former training partner at MFS and friend Tim Sylvia. I’m no Tim Sylvia fan, but the way Hughes put him down in his book is a complete lack of class. He was a horrible coach on TUF 6, especially because all of his decisions that he made was to outcoach Matt Serra, not for his team.
Finally, like Tito Ortiz’s shirt at Ortiz vs. Shamrock 3: The Final Chapter; I hope Matt Serra: "Punishes Matt Hughes’ ASS into Retirement.
by pUniSHment on Aug 14, 2008 2:40 AM EDT reply actions
Actually, Hughes only offered his initial impression of Tim (from years ago). He was sceptical of Tim’s heart and desire, but later gave Tim some credit. He did not like Tim at first…what’s wrong with that???
The point of these books is for the author to provide an honest account of their lives and situations…
And, when you coach to defeat the other coach, doesn’t that usually spell success for you own team? Gosh, great comments!

i hope serra pulls the win too. he took a beating last time from gsp and i don’t think hughes will finish him. would love to see serra knock him out!

by DB on Aug 14, 2008 7:17 AM EDT reply actions
it’s a good fight, but Dustin Hazelett needs to fight one more guy to get to someone like Jon Fitch…
anyways, Matt Hughes by split decision…

Serra did himself proud against GSP. Serra by submission…PLEASE!! Hughes is a dick. One of my mates met him in Vegas and thought he was a rude arrogant dick. Every time he opens his mouth in public i cringe….. As Serra said about Hughes “the guy’s a penis”.

I don’t really know what to think about this. I think that because of how dominant of a champion Matt Hughes once was, I want him to win. I still want to see Matt Serra fight after this but overall, I want Hughes to end his career with a win.
by RyanHobbs on Aug 14, 2008 8:38 AM EDT reply actions
i agree with RyannHobbs. i really like both fighters but we all know serra is going to continue to fight and hughes is done. i kind of want to see hughes end with a win. i just dont know which matt hughes will show up. we allll know how that goes!

Serra is going to get crushed. The sport has past Hughes by, but he has more than enough to dominate this cheeseball.
by True Believer on Aug 14, 2008 9:02 AM EDT reply actions
Hughes has better wrestling and a quicker jab. Serra has way better jitts, very heavy hands and works much better off his back.
I’m takin’ Serra…. by submission or 3rd UD.
by DJ on Aug 14, 2008 9:04 AM EDT reply actions
Hughes has way more submission wins in mma than Serra.I don’t think Serra’s bjj works well in mma.
by Jack on Aug 14, 2008 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions
Two or more years ago, I’d agree with you. Hughes uses GnP to set up the subs… Serra will pull off a sub while defending. Hughes has deteriorated more than Serra (maybe Serra was lower to start but that doesn’t matter). In this matchup, I think Serra pulls through. We’ll see.

Serra’s jits sucks! So overated it isn’t even funny. He should have never been champ. He just got lucky twice and don’t give me the “If you intend to throw a punch and it lands, how can that be lucky?”. He got lucky with a shot to the back of the neck and, truth be told, he never should of been in that title fight. Not exactly sure who he fought in the TUF finally, think it was Lytle, but I do remember Serra should not have got the decision.

Hughes has wins over Ricardo Almeida and Jeremy Horn in the ADCC Submission Wrestling tourne so he’s no slouch either mind you.
Regardless, I definately want Hughes to win. Serra is a better coach will definately give him that, but as someone said before I hope Hughes puts this cheeseball to sleep.

This fight should have happend after TUF when people wanted to see it. If this is the main event the UFC better hope they have a few good fights on the card to help sell it.
by Mike on Aug 14, 2008 11:27 AM EDT reply actions
I think that this has shrunk itself as a co-event on a PPV, or a main event on Spike TV. I personally think that since its a long overdue fight from a year ago, and because of both losses from Serra and Hughes that it be put on SPike TV. I think it would fare better. These days people could give a rats ass about watching these two and paying for it unless it is a stacked card. A good fight to finish a feud, but these two dont deserve the same spotlight as some of the other main eventers.
by Quentin on Aug 14, 2008 11:31 AM EDT reply actions
I can’t stand either of these fighters, although I respect Matt Hughes more for what he accomplished over his career (although he should have retired after GSP murdered him twice). But, as much as we all don’t want to see it, this will definitely be a main event or co-main event fight on PPV. Hughes is butt buddies with Dana, plus both guys are former welterweight champs (although I’d put an ‘*’ beside Serra’s name), so the UFC will spin it that was..AND both have big egos, so there is no way they’d accept a UFN main event or undercard on a PPV. I can see it now. The UFC will pull all this garbage footage from TUF show and turn on the old hype machine, and try to sell this like it’s a superfight. We all know the outcome of this fight is irrelevant. Hughes will retire and Serra will go back to fighting guys who are barely top 10 (where he belongs). How dumb does the UFC think their fans are?? They better surround this fight with at least 2-3 amazing main event fights. I say Hughes lays-and-gays to a UD victory.

I hope they coach another season on TUF. Then I hope they’re scheduled to fight at the end of the show. After that I hope that it gets delayed because it’s harvesting season and Hughes has to hop on the tractor Dana gave him and do some drivin’ on it. Finally, I hope they fight and are the fifth best fight on the card. And… and… GSP watches the fight and gets winner.

I can see Hughes winning by ref stoppage via GnP. I’ve never seen Hughes be anything but classy following his fights win or lose. Serra is a loudmouthed asshole…anyone who watched TUF6 saw that it was Serra constantly bad mouthing Hughes…worst things Hughes said about him is he’s got small man complex and I wouldn’t want my children watching this with him running his foul mouth, like every other word was F this, etc. Serra had a questionable split decision win over Chris Lytle in the TUF4 finale and he managed to catch GSP…only to get completely dominated in their rematch, ref stoppage in the middle of rd 2. I figure Hughes will retire after this but to put the final stamp on his career, I can see him giving Serra a beating reminicent of the one he gave to Gracie at UFC 60 or what he did to BJ in Rd 3 at UFC 63. That’ll send Matt Serra back to 155 wear he belongs only to watch guys like Sherk, Diego and others send him into retirement
