Jon Fitch wants to fight next 'before the end of the year'

Props: MMA.tv
Quoteworthy:
"I wasn't that beat up. Just a little off in the head after the first dropedge. I'm fine and will be back before the end of the year if I have any say in it."
Top welterweight contender Jon Fitch is eager to return to the Octagon after missing out on an opportunity to topple Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" and capture his 170-pound title. Despite "being a little off in the head" early in the five-round fight, Fitch managed to hang on until the very end, delivering one of the gutsiest performances of the year. It would be no surprise to see him take on the winner of the welterweight bout between Karo Parisyan and Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" on September 6.

I hope he comes back stronger from the pounding he got. Alot of fighters would take along time mentally to get over that type of loss. I hope this is not the case for Fitch.

Best of luck on his way to hes next title shot. IMO he deserves an immediate rematch, not because it was a close call, but the fact it was one of the most exciting fights of the year. Matt Hughes can go to hell.

that was the most f-up face i have seen in any post press conference…maybe he will redirect that comment about GSP being scared to get hit back to himself next time he steps into the cage.

He didn’t break anything. Just cuts and bruises—all will heal quickly.
Fitch is one tough SOB.

True, but his jaw wasn’t moving all that well in the post fight interveiw. He was talking like his teeth were gritted together.
by Gord on Aug 12, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, you noticed that too huh. Well it’s really hard to move your jaw muscles if someone like GSP kept punching it for like 25 minutes!

Fitch is a badass just for going 5 rounds like he did. Lots of guys would have gave up.

Nothing but respect for Fitch. He is a warrior and I really feel bad for his next opponent.

Could not agree more, I came on to post the same thing. Jon’s next opponent is going to get beat on very badly. I think GSP was right that Fitch will learn a lot from this. He has seen the best and knows now where he has to get to. Also, no one is going to be as good as GSP was, so he will fear no man now becasue he has been up agianst the best and stuck it out through five.
So much respect for Fitch.

I believe Fitch will come out strong from this loss. He shouldn’t just be content to be on the same level as GSP but he should at least try to surpass what GSP is right now. Imagine Fitch with that kind of mentality, we all know where he’s gonna be 2-3 years from now, at the top of the food chain!

i have a whole new level of respect 4 fitch!! i knew he was a great fighter but that 5 rounds of war just proved his hunger 4 the title!! feel sorry 4 his next victim!!!

I give him all the respect in the world, but does he really think fighting before the end of the year is the smartest choice? His face was mangled!
That being said I hope he is on the Dec card. That has the potential to be unbelievable!
by WB on Aug 12, 2008 11:09 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He got a few cuts and bruises on his face. Those will heel up in no time. He’ll look like normal in no more than 1 month. Nothing was broken or seriously injured. Just some flesh wounds. They look worse than they actually are.
And in regards to his next fight, GREAT suggestion Mania. I have been itching to see Fitch BEAT DOWN Karo for quite some time now!!!

by braveheart on Aug 13, 2008 5:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Fitch vs KOS would be a sick fight, but there boys. Unless they have a falling out, I don’t see that fight happening anytime soon. That goes for Swick too.
With Hughes out for a while, Serra vs Fitch or Serra vs KOS could happen. I don’t think Serra stands a chance with either, but a win would put him back in the title picture and he knows that.
by DaveO on Aug 12, 2008 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea but serra is a risky fight for anybody he has one punch knock out power and sick bjj but i do see him losing to both those guys more times than not

I’d love to see that fight, maybe someone needs to start a rumor that Fitch secretly hates Kos’ blond fro. That would result in a falling out and we can get the match up!!! Honestly though, it would be a really good fight and I’d love to see it. Hopefully these guys can be professional and do what is required of them.

You know what, this is bullsh*t! they shouldn’t have any say as to who they want, or they don’t want to fight next! The UFC should have a say in any fight arrangement. Same camp or not, everybody should be fighting each other!!

I honestly didn’t think Fitch would last through the 1st round, but I give him a lot of respect. He hung in there and stuck it out. He didn’t have a lot offensively but he did a good job of neutralizing a lot of what GSP threw at him. I gained a lot of respect for his abilities and he’s a classy guy. The sport needs more like him.

Hate, hate, HATE Karo. Hopefully he loses vs Yoshiyuki Yoshida (which I predict) though so he won’t even deserve Fitch.
Adam, at least Manny took it somewhat respectfully. Karo would have been like “Bro, do you know who I am? That was a lucky punch…”

dana should give fitch an exciting match like:
fitch vs. koscheck
fitch vs. hazelett
but instead the ufc will give him a slide in the next fight with lower fighters like:
fitch vs. burkman
fitch vs. saunders
by bradpittfightclub on Aug 12, 2008 11:15 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He faught Burkamn and Saunders is nowhere near the top of the division. Fitch will get a top 10 guy. As I said before they won’t fight any of the guys from AKA. So the Swick and KOS fight won’t happen.
Possible fights
- winner of Karo Parisyan vs Yoshiyuki Yoshida like the article says
- Serra
- hazelett could happen, good call
- Kevin burns, but that could be a stretch.
- Marcus Davis if he gets by Paul Kelly
by DaveO on Aug 12, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brad Pitt, those are awful ideas of next opponents. McLovin is the only one that almost makes sense, but that would be TOO big of a leap up in competition for Hazelett.
And for those of you that thought Fitch’s face got busted up, PLEASE watch Fitch vs Burkman. Fitch finishes him and Burkman has straight up alien face by the end!
It used to be up on youtube, but its not anymore.
by ViolentMike on Aug 12, 2008 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I don’t like Bradd Pitt’s match ups either. Lets see him beat Karo’s punk ass, or send Swick down to 155.
by LJ on Aug 12, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, the winner of Karo/Yoshida makes the most sense of all possible opponents for Fitch IMO. Any combination of Fitch/Kos/Swick is just NOT going to happen unless one of them becomes the champ and the other becomes #1 contender. As for the other options…
Serra – A win for either Matt or Fitch over the other definitely keeps the winner in title contention IMO but it looks like the UFC and/or Serra seem content to just wait for Hughes to get better for a battle of the Matts.
Hazelett, Burns – It would be a huge step up in competition for either to fight Fitch imo, maybe too huge to realistically see it happen. Between the two though, I think McLovin makes the better matchup against Fitch.
Davis – If Davis does rebound against Kelly, him fighting Fitch would not a bad matchup at all considering both would be coming off of some impressive win streaks.

Man, what a warrior, but he sure looked pretty beat up to me. I would like to see him fight Kos but Kos is always talking about how they are good friends and training partners and how they prob. wouldn’t fight unless it was for the title and it would have to have a big pay day.
by brac on Aug 12, 2008 11:22 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Totally agree! Fitch is on a new level in my mind.
I don’t want to get off the subject too much but does it upset you guys that the top fighers that we are used to seeing fight 3 times a year in the UFC have been scheduled to fight only twice in 2008?
by natedogg77 on Aug 12, 2008 11:22 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hey natedogg77,
Which fighter are talking about.
- We’ll see GSP 4 times this year if the newyear fight happens
- A. Silva at least 3 time
- Penn maybe 3
- Chucks been injured
- Forrest and Rampage were tied up with the show
by DaveO on Aug 12, 2008 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fitch deserves a lot of respect for his “never say die” attitude. His statement that, “I wasn’t that beat up.” is a bit odd though – could he still be in a bit of denial?
by Muscle Dolphin on Aug 12, 2008 11:53 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah it is wierd to say. He was that beat up. And I also want to know who Fitch has faught that have been stronger than GSP? He said that too.
by GodDamnMike on Aug 12, 2008 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was quoted as saying Roan was freakishly strong.
As for Fitch, his face looked jacked up but GSP didn’t seem to do much damage or else I think he’d been KO’d. The one who is in a lot of pain has to be Heath, he was taking a bunch of knees to the body… that would stick with you for a few days.

fitch became one of my favorite fighters on saturday due to his heart, toughness and respect. He has all the skills to be a top guy but gsp is a beast and he gave it his all. I would like to see fitch fight another top ten guy in his next fight i think he is going to be stuck in the same situation as rich franklin in the middleweight division that being he is far and away from the top guy but he is also far and away from the third guy. I think fitch would handle karo rather easily i would like to see him fight the winner of sanchez vs. alves he has already beaten both of those guys but they were exciting close fights

If Fitch can improve his game to the degree that GSP improved his, after his loss to Hughes, Fitch will be a force to reckon with. Everyone now knows that you will have to kill the guy to finish him.

Based on comments from Hughes that we read earlier, I’d like to see Hughes scheduled to be Fitch’s next victim, assuming he takes care of Serra. Either Hughes or Karo would be great for Fitch, as they are both guys that he’ll handle easily, and they’re both d*ckheads that deserve to get pummeled. Having said that, i don’t think Hughes or Karo are locks to win their next fights. GSP vs Penn aside, I’m struggling to pick who is now deserving of a title shot from GSP. Maybe the winner of Alves vs Sanchez?

I agree Fitch is the man, He gained a ton of respect going 5 tough rounds. I can’t wait for GSP/Penn then Penn/Silva
by Mike on Aug 12, 2008 1:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Call me a cynic, let me play devils advocate or maybe I see the glass half full but in Fitch’s last 3 fights he had a split decision win (meaning he barely won) to Sanchez, he had to go the distance with Chris Wilson whom, if you’re honest, no one had ever heard of (and we were all complaning about the choice of Wilson), and he just got annihilated by GSP. He’s tough yes but, we he has not impressed me, at all, in his last 3 fights. Being a human punching bag / tackling dumby for 5 rounds does not impress me. That’s just kinda how I see it.

I like Fitch, but I don’t think anything about the fight was a “gutsy performance” from his side. He got a pretty good beat-down, GSP dominated him in every fashion. This doesn’t say anything about Fitch, only about GSP. GSP is the same calibre as Emelianenko, A.Silva, BJ Penn – pure dominance in his weightclass.
So where does Fitch go from here? A change in weightclasses seems unlikely, so all he can do is beat other top contenders, making sure he gets another shot at GSP, maybe after (and if) BJ Penn wins against him.
To me Fitch is in the same position as Rich Franklin, a great MMA figher who found his cryptonite in A.Silva/GSP. It would be good if there was a parallel championship like the PrideFC model for such guys. On the one side the world champions, on the other Grand Prix Champions (same weight class or open-weight or both).
This would make the UFC actually exciting again, but I don’t see that happening with Dana and J.Silva on the button.

I think it should be Fitch/Serra next. I think that Hughes is out for a while.
by GodDamnMike on Aug 12, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
1) To those who say Fitch had a lot of heart, it wasn’t proven in this fight (not saying he doesn’t have it, just that it wasn’t proven). I would agree that he’s tough and had good defense, but that’s different than having a lot of heart. At no point in the match did GSP have a firm submission hold on him, nor was GSP pounding the crap out of him for a "long" period of time. That’s when you can tell a fighter’s heart, whether he taps out or whether he can gather himself and overcome the situation. Sure, Fitch was beaten convincingly and his face showed it, but that was from GSP’s consistent strikes throught out the 25 minutes. No fighter would just tap out cuz he got hit a few times then move out of the way, then get hit a few times more.
Which leads me to point 2.
2) As dominate as GSP was in the fight, he still should have been able to finish Fitch off. He had a lot of opportunities to do it when he knocked down Fitch but was not able to capitalize on them. I remember at one point, Fitch was on his knees and GSP was just giving him these cheap jabs to the face. How did he expect to finish him like that? Another time, GSP was attempting the RNC but seemed like it was in slow motion. Obviously Fitch was able to get out of that and then got the dominant position.
GSP needs to do better than that to finish BJ. Albeit he may still win cuz of his athleticism.
by DrHarry on Aug 12, 2008 2:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Props to Fitch for totally getting his a@# handed to him! staying in there to take one of the worst beatings I’ve seen since Tito and Shamrock 1. I think his team should step up an force him to recover fully before getting in there again. With the damage caused to his face, head , body, ego and was totally schooled for 5 dominated rounds by GSP!! Last thing you want him to do is get hit once and land in a coma. As he is a warrior who was totally dominated, knocked out 3-4 times recovered quickly with a caved in face and fight defensively like my little brother for 5 rounds. He needs to heal fully before he gets in there with another tuff guy without fully recovering and ends up a losing quickly.
by Qmonster on Aug 12, 2008 3:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dr Harry, CLearly you are either not a mixed martial artist or never been knocked out. The heart involved in keeping on going after you are dropped is intense!(Especialy in the few seconds after it happens) Fitch got dropped a few times and was in trouble in most of the drops. Or how about the series of knees in a row to the face he took, one in particular when he fell forward and ate a perfectly connected knee. I can garantee his body wanted to quit a few times.
About the reference of cheap jabs… how can you even say they were cheap. It was part of the strategy GSP had to scare fitch off so that he would think twice before exploding at him.
What do you mean by cheap anyways. THese are Jabs is not againt the rules. A good example of cheap would be Marquart’s spike on Leites
I will agree though that this fight was mostly GSP. There was only little effective offence for Fitch.
by gedits on Aug 12, 2008 3:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Like I said, he’s one tough fighter. Tell me at what point of the fight could Fitch have tapped out? He was getting hit but of course he would keep trying to defend himself. Anyone would have.
Maybe I shouldn’t have used the word “cheap” to describe GSP’s jabs when Fitch was on his knees but they were sure weak. I think Fitch was just staying there to rest up and regain composure.
