WEC 35 bonuses and awards for 'Condit vs. Miura'

WEC 35 from the "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 3 has come to a close. And there was no shortage or exciting fights or bonus-worthy finishes.
Similar to the UFC, the Zuffa-based WEC promotion often passes out awards for "Fight of the Night," "Submission of the Night" and "Knockout of the Night" after each event.
Sunday was no different -- the promotion rewarded several participants on the card for their performances. In fact, in a rare move two of the three title bouts on the card received "Fight of the Night" honors, according to MMAWeekly.com.
Here's the list of fighters who earned some cold hard cash for their outstanding performances at WEC 35:
Fight of the Night: Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura and Jamie Varner vs. Marcus Hicks
Knockout of the Night: Brock Larson
Submission of the Night: Brian Bowles
Each fighter received $7,500 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which you can check out right here. Not a bad cherry on top, but a far cry from the usual $40,000 to $75,000 dished out for bonuses at UFC events.
For those who missed it, Bowles' guillotine came out of nowhere. It looked like he was going to get slammed by Damacio Page; however, in mid air he secured the choke, which was impressive enough to win submission of the night over the other two under card matches that ended with a tapouts.
A very explosive 37-second knockout from Brock Larson will not only earn him some extra scratch, but this impressive win should get him back in line for a shot at Condit's title. It appears either Larson or a rematch with Miura is up next for Condit ... there aren't too many other options.
Either way, it should be another great welterweight title fight for the WEC.

That was the first time I saw Condit fight since I just got Versus. I was not impressed based on what I have heard. I just kept thinking he would get worked by a lot of WW in the UFC. That dude was judo tossing him around like a rag doll, but just couldn’t do anything once down. Maybe it was just an off night since he said his grandmother died 2 days earlier. What’s the deal?

Anyone hear Leitis is gonna fight this guy named Jason Brilz at UFN 15? The dude is 15-1-1 on an 11 fight win streak and has beat Jason McDonald before.

I guess he was approached by the UFC in the past but didn’t sign. I think he’s expected to fight on that card since the card is gonna be in Nebraska and he’s based out of that state.

Goren Rejlik was going to move down to fight Leites at middleweight (Goren at middleweight is SCARY), but he got hurt, so I am assuming they match Brilz up with THales.

Is Goran a natural middleweight? Maybe Gouveia can get a rematch at 185 when he is in shape. Gouveia is going to be top 5 at 185 and will finish Goran the next time if given the opportunity.

BNF: I am not sure but if I had to guess, I would say no. He was a pretty big LHW when he beat wilson. I think he is like 6’4. I dont know for sure but I would think it would be hard for him too get down to 185 lbs…If he does, middleweights better look out, he is one bad dude!
YOu know I love thales but if he were to face Goran, I would be nervous for sure!

Maybe I am just being a hater because I am a HUGE Gouveia fan, but Goran was getting worked in that fight. He caught Gouveia on the temple after he gassed. Gouveia will be in shape and a major force at MW, watch and see. Goran will be a mid level LHW at best.

that was fight of the night and a runner up for fight of the year, it won’t beat the alvarez hansen fight but it was a great one.

I guess you’re right. Maybe if the fight had ended during one of those fury of blows, I would feel like it was more of a “fight of the night”. Still, it was a very exciting fight.

Four rounds of non-stop action and you “don’t know”? The broken eye socket probably came earlier in that round and that light knee hitting it just put Miura down for good.

Easy buddy, I said it was a “great” and “exciting” fight. I’m just being honest about the way it ended. No big controversy.

I agree, the knee wasn’t brutal, exhaustion ended the fight, both guys were spent. It’s up there with fight of the year, I liked faber/pulver as much!

Good fight as always. WEC is a great promotion, hopefully they will let their champs fight the UFC champs someday.
Kurt, you all moved in yet?

Miura earned a rematch. He was a big underdog that surprised everyone.

paying miura 5g is a f*ckin crime, even with the fight of the night bonus he didnt get paid what hes worth

WEC refs acted like American versions of Pride refs in that fight (Miura vs Condit)…if Condit was on top, they didn’t start threatening to stand it up as fast and they focused on threatening to end the fight with Miura “give up, OK?” (forcing Miura to repeatedly sweep him wasting valuable energy), and when Miura was on top, they focused on threatening to stand it up,….I know both guys were a couple good shots from ending the fight at multiple times during the fight but I didn’t like the witnessed bias…
To those who weren’t impressed byu Condit, or hadn’t seen him, the kid is an animal, it just so happened that a game Miura (who used to fight at 185, took mayhem to a decision) came into the cage to fight that night

So I wasnt the only onle that noticed that.

The difference is that when Miura was on top he was in Condit’s full guard making no effort to pass. Condit frequently had half guard, side control or full mount. Referees will rarely stand fighters up from half guard and never from side mount or full mount.
