what a Klown! Matt Hughes, I am not sure u aren’t a washed up 1 dimensional has been.

I would like to see Alves knock his head off again! Fake ass Christian who tortures animals, writes about it thinking its cool! F off, Hater!

some of you guys crack me up how hate on hughes. he is at this point the most dominate fighter at 170 ever (beat bj, gsp everyone they put in front of him). he is one of the few has helped pioneer this sport, and that changed the game and because he proclaims to be Christian ever one hates on him. in a day where you can talk about anything and not get persecuted or it held it against you. you say Jesus and everyone freaks out. Hughes is the man. yes maybe washed up but still on of the all time greats.

by phil on Aug 5, 2008 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh come on! If you’re going to use his wins over GSP and Penn as the basis of your argument for how great Hughes is, then you’ve failed before you complete a third sentence. Getting GSP to tap with less than two seconds left and then beating Penn after he separated his ribs does not show how great of a fighter he is. Look at those fights in their entirety as well as the fights he lost to those two men. He was dominated badly in all four fights.

he was never an all time great, he’s an all time overrated fighter. the guy never even truly won the title the first time against Newton. He was out cold and fell to the mat, BJM didn’t realize Hughes was out cold too, had he noticed the match would have been ruled a NC and hughes would’ve faded into obscurity instead of getting lucky and hand fed fighters.

Hughes and all time great!! Ludicrous. He’s one of the most overrated fighters of all time. that’s about the only all time thing hughes is capable of accomplishing.

by jj on Aug 5, 2008 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JJ: I totaly agee with your whole comment. People need to realize that he faced GSP 3 times and only won a combined total of like 20 seconds against GSP.

In the 1st fight, the fat buddah BJ showed up and he completely dominated Hughes submitting him in the 1st round. The second fight BJ dominated the 1st 2 rounds before cracking a rib, so give Hughes the 3rd round and HUGHES still oNLY won 1 round and 20 seconds against about 9 rounds total that GSP/Penn won. Penn and GSP are the best fighters that hughes has ever faced and he didnt do well against either of them.

This is why everyone jumps on his case, because he talks crap. I dont want to hear that another fighter isnt top 5 coming from a guy who is not even top 10 anymore!

I cant wait till Matt’s twin brother makes his UFC debut so he can get knocked out too!

by john on Aug 5, 2008 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

john so its ok for Nog to get dominated in his fights before he wins? But its not ok for Hughes? Dont let your dislike blind you guys from the truth. Matt Hughes, was the most dominant WW todate.

by JV on Aug 5, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV: How in the world can u compare Nog to hughes? I cant even dignify that with a response.

If you dont know, u never will? whats the name of that boring cowboy song that Hughes uses for his entrances?

by john on Aug 5, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV nice comment….talk about someone who gets the literal sh** beat out of them and then comes back to win…Big Nog is king of that!

by Chadx23 on Aug 5, 2008 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

when has hughes been know to take a beating and win by submission.

by roy on Aug 5, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Chadx23, john Im not comparing fighters, Im comparing the situations. You said Matt got dominanted in 2 rounds with Penn. So What? Hughes came back and pounded Penns face into the mat. Same with Nog, he got dominanted by Tim and then pulled off a sub right? So the situation does compare. So answer the question: Why is it ok for Nog but not for Hughes?

by JV on Aug 5, 2008 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nogueira doesnt oose fights, he just runs out of time! LOL

I wouldnt even put Hughes in the same breath as Nog!

Think about hte top welterweights today, Hughes hasn’t really beat any of them. He won when fighters were still one dimensional. He has never faced:
Fitch
sheilds
Kos
Karo
Diego
hasnt beaten Aves
been dominated by GSP

He beat guys like trig, Newton, sherk, cheruto guys that couldnt hold the top welterweights of today’s Jocks.

NEWS REPORT***

Chris Horedecki haS been released from his IFL contract and has officialy become a free agent! THe AFL, Affliction and the WEC have all extended him offers. AFL offered him a very generous cntract but Affliction said it would match it because they want him to compete at octobers Affliction 2 event. My guess is he will take the Affliction deal and we will see him at Affliction 2.

In other news, HW Judoka Legend, Pawel Nestula (pride veteran) has come ouut of retirement and will take part in WVR’s Sengoku 4

by john on Aug 5, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

john, none of those guys were around back then, all those guys just jumped on the scene. Now that Hughes is past it, how can you expect him to face these young up and comers? those guys he faced were at the top of the division at the time. And everybody says BJ should have won the GSP fight right? Then Matt pounded BJ after right? And GSP had ran threw the division when he got tapped by Hughes.

by JV on Aug 5, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

those old guys would never beat any of the new guys. Just like Royce couldnt beat Hughes. So Hughes should keep his mouth shut about a guy who almost decapitated him 2 months ago with a flying Knee. He can think about how Alves isnt top 5 while he is rehabbing his messed up knee thanks to Alves’s KO!

by john on Aug 5, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thr guys he faced where what the ufc had at the time and not the best in the world.

by roy on Aug 5, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

john i agree with you and I don’t like hughes and his comment pissed me off as I am a huge alves fan ….but to this comment I think your wrong. I consider anyone who is a pioneer a great and in his time, he was one of the greats in the sport and should be remembered as a pioneer. I consider Royce a great even though he couldn’t compete with the guys today. Just like many athletes in other sports are considered great even though they could not compete with the athletes of today…hell the entire NFL in the 1970’s would have a hard time competing with anyone from today because they are much bigger, faster, stronger due to modern fitness. Its just the evolution of the sport. There will be a time when people will say GSP cant compete with these guys. The reason being is as the sport evolves, so do the people that play it. In the 90’s no one could beat Royce, and in the late 90’s early 2000s no one could beat hughes, and now it is late 2000s and no one can beat St. Pierre. All of these guys should and will be considered greats of the sport because they were at one time.

Regardless hughes comment here is stupid because the guy did knock his ass out 2 months ago. He should shut up and retire after fighting serra win or lose.

by Eric on Aug 5, 2008 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hughes sucks, he won the belt on sheer luck, got handled by bj in the 1st fight, got lucky bj injured himself in the second, fought a bunch of cans, got KTFO by gsp, beat up a skinny old gracie, he did tap gsp which imo was the highlight of his career, got dominated on the ground by gsp, dry humped Chris Lytle for a decision… totally, TOTALLY over-rated, he was “dominant” during a time when being 1 dimensional was ok. he was hand fed fighters and when a fight came up that the ufc couldn’t avoid he got beat most of the time. what is his record against quality fighters? (not Joe Riggs, or under-sized lightweights, or any other cans) 2 wins-4 losses. OVER-RATED!!!!

by The_Cannibal on Aug 5, 2008 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok you Hughes haters. Yes he’s gettin old and on his way out, but he was the man in his prime. You can’t take away from him that he has beat GSP and BJ. You can call the armbar on GSP lucky or whatever, but he won, he was the better mma fighter that night. Now with BJ, everyone saying that Hughes won because BJ had a seperated rib, so what, sounds to me that Hughes seperated it for him. Hughes afflicted pain on BJ that lead to his loss, that is the whole point to the fight you idiots. So Hughes was the better mma fighter that night also. It’s like you Hughes haters want to take these wins away from Hughes, but sorry, what is done is done, Hughes beat them both at one time. Deal with it!

renato verissimo, gil castillo, joe riggs and royce gracie, marcello aguiar carlos newton? thats part of his ufc prowess ? come on they cant rank at all with todays talent! sean sherk? hayato sakurai? not real welterweights! frank trigg? il give him that but look at how gsp raped trigg! trigg realy troubled hughes!
chris lytle is decent i’l give hughes that but i dont see lytle in the ufc much longer!
if hughes were to face any of the following he would most likely get his ass handed to him
diego sanchez
karo parisyan(also overrated)
john fitch
josh koscheck
mike swick
anthony “rumble” johnson( hughes wont take him down)
thats how i see it mania hughes is way over the hill and we all know it! and its because he isnt with militich anymore he is training his own team

Hughes is the greatest WW ever!!! Suck it up people. I can’t stand Rampage, but I respect all that he accomplished in MMA…same goes for Shamrock, Tito, Kos. Personal feelings should never get into it when discussing the accomplishments of athletes (objectivity anyone)

Just a thought – if Hughes only beat BJ because BJ had a cracked rib, who cracked BJ’s rib???

Hughes’ accomplishments speak for themselves. Yes, he’s no longer a title contender, but he’s done it all. Like every single sport, MMA is evolving. Superstars from the 1980s NBA couldn’t shine today’s players shoes, so what? Do you hate them too?

by WADZ on Aug 5, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanx Wadz. It took me this long to find a place to sneek a word in, but I was about to say the same thing you said about Hughes win over Penn. I can see when people talk about his win against GSP not meaning that much, since GSP has beaten Hughes 2 times since then, but last time I checked, he won his last fight against Penn. I am sick about hearing about how good B.J. looked in that fight before he absolutely got his ASS HANDED TO HIM. Hughes got him in a crucifix hold, and then punched him in the face about 20 times. No one ever says that Overeem looked great just before Chuck knocked him out, because it doesn’t matter how good you looked before you got destroyed.

That rant aside, When Hughes was in his prime, he was a nightmare for everyone he faced. He absolutely dominated most of his fights, and was a great champion.

He is no longer in his prime, and may not be top 5 in the division anymore himself, but that doesn’t mean that he is a loser and does not know what he is talking about.

Between all the people hating on Hughes and Randy the last few days, I am left believing that this place is filling up with 15 year olds, and can only hope it does ot turnj into Sherdog.

Any other obscure reference you want to throw into this…

One thing I will say, I don’t think Alves is that good. Not that he’s bad but if I fought an old lady in the street I might look like a good fighter too.

Karo was out of shape as always and Hughes looked like he had to take a dump and could find the walmart restroom.

I’m very excited for the Alves / Diego fight, I think that will answer a lot of questions. If Alves can walk through that fight then he has matured to a much better fighter then I currently give him credit for.

yeah, him and his brother used to torture and murder animals. Bully other kids, beat up their own parents and curse them out, and he basically brags about it all in his book….Some Christian!l

by THORAZINE on Aug 5, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, if u ike hating on him, like I do, you should definety read his book!

Check our what Barnett had to say about Aleks emelianenko:

“Aleksander Emelianenko must have hit something mighty powerful to think I am afraid of fighting him. The only offer I ever had to fight him was the one time I did fight him…and I won. His version of asking for a rematch is doing so in a locker room after beating Bobish while I visited his brother. "Sure we can fight. Why not for free even, I mean who does this to make money right!?" He’s not an "insane" fighter. He’s just delusional.

He thinks I have been "running" from him because "I know I will lose". He says he lost because he had a, and I am not making this up, a temperature of "98.6″. No, he doesn’t mean Celsius because his organs would have cooked off like fireworks at the kind of heat (208.6C). Go back to rapping about….fuck who cares!? Have you heard that shit!?

I was asked if I would fight him in this Affliction event and I said "In a heart beat". Ask Tom or Todd. I will walk up to him when I see him next and let him know too. You will never beat me. I will fight you anytime and you will lose again. You can make all the excuses you want but when they’re picking up what’s left of you the proof will be for all to see…splattered all over the ring."

Sounds like they will definety fight again sooner or later!

KO of the night at UFC 87 is coming from the Everson/Kongo fight. for those that dont know Everson, he is a Muy Tai fighter who has competed in K-1 and he hates wretslers (like me). These 2 big Heavyweights are going to throw leather and it should be great to watch. Its a crime that this fighht is on the under card but Manny/emeson is on the main card!

Doesnt Dana know that Karo and his cousin Manny have ZERO fans?

John, the song is by Hank Williams Jr. and it is called Country Boys Can Survive, or something along those lines. BTW, that is the worst entrance song ever. The best is Chuck’s, The Intro by DMX.

And let me guess, It’s the worst entrance ever because you said so ? WOW who are you ? I like posting on this website, It makes me laugh how everyone bad mouths fighters like they would get in the octagon with them. Matt Hughes has done tons for the sport, with that being said, his time is passing by, that’s all there is to it, and he has an opinion just like everyone else does, id he says Thiago isn’t top 5, i would agree, He knows a hell of a lot more then anyone on here does about MMA

Hughes is an awesome fighter – at one time he was the best in his division – hands down.
And if the pitbull is so great, how come he couldn’t make weight?
Hughes is right, Alves is not top five in the ww division:
GSP
Fitch
Kos
Sanchez
Swick

Chill out John!

Matt Hughes is a legend and acts with dignity even in defeat. I was at the 85 weigh-in and when Alves came in 4LBS OVER Dana just glanced at Matt and he gave the ‘ok’ sign and smiled.

He’s a good guy and this sport owes him a lot, Alves is just a young pup. Yes he is absolutly a better fighter than Matt now but coming in 4lbs over was a massive advantage and i think he’s a douche for that reason.

Hope Sanchez throws him around like a rag doll.

by nick j on Aug 5, 2008 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe if your boy alves would have put in the effort to actually make weight he would deserve some respect.

How can he be a top 5 welterweight when he can’t even make weight for an event that he headlined.

Hughes gets respect for allowing the fight to even go on. He could have easily said nope I’m not gonna risk my health because some guy is unprofessional.

by DDT on Aug 5, 2008 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You guys that bash Alves are the same that were talking crap to me when I was busy predicting and betting on Alves knocking out Karo and HUghes. Check mania’s archives if you guys want to play the bad memory card! Not only did I oredict the wins, I believe I predicted the knees as well!

What does Alves have to do to get some respect? destroy the whole division? Whatever, hate all u want, after he Tests Diego’s Mexican jaw u guys will still be running their mouthhs.

Enough with the Matt HUghes is so noble that he fought Alves when he weight 4 lbs over argument…Alves had to give Hughes part of his purse because of it, he paid enough for that already! So what if Alves weighed a litte more, Hughes made his name by cutting massive amounts of weight and being much bigger then his opponents.I dont care what Alves weights, Right now he will KO any welterweight with the exception of fitch and GSP!!!

by john on Aug 5, 2008 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow… What happened to well reasoned arguement and a good natured debate? This has degenerated into a hissy handbag affair.

Gotta say though, unless the stated someone is actually your child, or at stretch someone you have helped tutor and have developed a close, almost parental relationship with, then you should probably avoid refering to them as ‘your boy’…

by Matt on Aug 5, 2008 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

john your still avoiding questions. If Matt is washed up as you say, then Alves beating him doesnt mean much right? I dont hate on Alves, he truly is a pitbull. Ill wait untill the Diego/Thiago fight to see if Thiago is for real, or just one of the good WW’s.

by JV on Aug 5, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Serra would be a good match with Pen at 155, if Serra could make the wieght it would be a good fight… but then again I love the “Jits” game.

by Ro-J on Aug 5, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t get me wrong. Alves is a bad man and probably is a top 5 WW,but not making weight (especially in the UFC) is a real negative in my book. Nobody let Lutter off the hook for it so why should Alves get off the hook when he has had two incedents.

I think that Diego will knock him off.

by DDT on Aug 5, 2008 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ro-J, do you seriously think BJ would have a problem with Serra? BJ would make him look worse than GSP did last time. Serra will lose to Hughes when they fight. He would lose to any top 10 WW or LW for that matter. He is a 1 hit wonder and after Hughes beats his a$$ he will fade away…

by BNF on Aug 5, 2008 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

DDT thats a good point! Lutter got bashed but Alves get a pass twice? Im not an Alves hater, Im just going to wait and see how he does against Diego.

by JV on Aug 5, 2008 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV, I hate Hughes and I knew Alves was going to kill him, but this fight with Diego will be a whole different story. Alves has been finished, we have yet to see Diego get finished. Hughes shots were so predictable that Alves was able to defend very sucessfully. Diego will set up his shots with much better combinations and will put Alves on his back. I like both of them so I don’t really care who wins, but I think this one has fight of the year written all over it!

by BNF on Aug 5, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea BNF, I dont hate on Alves, but to say hes just going to run over any WW because he beat Hughes is foolish! I think Diego is much more aggressive and will push the pace of the fight. If I had to choose I’ll go with Diego.

NO, thats not it, I have been bashing Matt al day, and I am stuck in MOderation “purgatory” as well!

NO beating HUghes didnt meancmuch for Alves, but most f yoou were trying to tell me that Hughes woud win when I was saying to watch the fying knee… same thing when he made Karo eat a KNEE Caserole!

This site has been sleeping on Alves for too long. What will you guys have to say aboout him when he destroys Diego’s famous Mexican Jaw? I am a huge Diego fan as I am an Aves fan so I just want to see a great fight, BUt I realy think Alves is in the middle of a meteoric rise right now and it will take Fitch or GSP to derail him!

diego will not take him down. Alves is a HUGE welterweight and Diego is Tiny! Diego coudnt get uigi down to the matt so I doubt he will be able to put Alves on his back. Either way Aves’s submission defense is getting better and better. Diego wont bring any special Jits to the table that Alves doesnt deal with on a dail basis in practice. He trains with ju jItsu wizards: Tibau, Maximus, tHiago Silva… Not really worried about Diego submitting him.

Diego has one chance of beating alves, and thats to mount him and TKO his way to a win, but I dont think that it willl happen!

Hughes talks about treating people how you would want to be treated and I keep going back to the way he treated Jason Von Flue in TUF, whata dick! Hughes also critizes Matt Sera for swearting, while President Dana White is the swearing King of the UFC.

Hughes is rapidly approaching retirement, his interest is even less than it was before.

He had some bullshit comment to say about Randy Couture’s book without even reading it!… just an all around dickhead.

However, I would say, that in that time of MMA, Hughes was the greatest welterweight in history…. Hughes in his prime would not come close to beating the GSP or many of the other fighters now. Unlike other Hughes haters on here, I’m willing to give him his due.

I agree with u on all counts on Matt Hughes here John. I just ordered his book used from Amazon. I always felt he was a sadistic F#@K and his book will not only be interesting, but confirm what I always thought about him.

BTW, I was thinking Diego would beat Thiago, but since you’ve been commenting on it, I may have to change my mind.. pretty good assessment there.

by THORAZINE on Aug 6, 2008 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thank you!

At least u appreciate it, I been taking a beating on here. Then again I have been criticized for saying Alves would beat Karo and Hughes….Eventually all these Alves Haters will become fans and start riding his jock when he becomes the next big thing in the welterweight division.

Alves is really on Fire right now. Diego is Tiny (although I am a fan of his). If Diego couldnt get Luigi down, how can anyone think that he wll be able to take Alves who is Huge and put him on his back. I dont see it happening. Diego’s stand up is much improved, but still not good enough to not get kNocked out against Alves. Lets not kid ourselves, NO ONE IN THE DIVISION wants to stand and trade with Alves right now. I really think it will take GSP or Fitch to slow him down! Evertyone else will get their heads knocked off!

by john on Aug 6, 2008 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, I agree with you for the most part, and I’m with you in saying that most of the people that post here are simple minded, and don’t understand the intricacies of the game. They just pick their favorite fighter, and argue that they’ll win to the death. IMO, Hughes was the same case as Tito, just not as much. They were both really good FOR THEIR TIME. Both pioneers, but not evolved enough now.

That said, I agree with you 100% that Thiago will destroy Diego. Ive said before that Diego would be smarter to fight at 155, as well as Koscheck. The thing I disagree with you on, is that GSP or Fitch will beat Thiago. I think they’d both have a harder time taking him down than Fitch did in the first fight (2+ years ago, and even if they do, his defense has become top notch. Plus, they might very well get KTFO’d by a thunderous knee when they shoot in on him. I expect HUGE things from Alves in the future. Hell, the guys only 24! He’s better than GSP was at 24 isn’t he? My only concern is that he may be a juicer. He looked absolutely massive against Hughes, when compared to the Karo fight, and it was only a few months apart. I hope like hell we don’t find out he was using steroids.

There are a lot of things that it’s better to be first at, but beating a guy first in a fight and then losing to him isn’t the best order to be 1-1 with someone. Do you mean everyone knows that he will beat Hughes again, like he beat him the last time he DIDN’T beat him?LOL.

by Gord on Aug 6, 2008 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he beat penn but come on the first 2 rounds he looked like he did not even belong in the ring with bj and won on a injury or conditioning problem witch ever you beleave but he did not beat him with skill.

by roy on Aug 5, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

roy, Being well conditioned and able to avoid injury is another dimension that makes up who the better fighter is…not just their skill-set. Hughes was better/more prepared that night.

by RedDog on Aug 5, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it is part of it thats why i said he won the fight but come on bj was kicking the shit out of him and beat him the first fight with no problems, bj is the far better fighter and always will be so if you want to agrue how good matt is i would not use the bj and gsp fights.

by roy on Aug 5, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

roy I’ll tell you just like I told john, its ok for Nog to get dominated in his fights, but its not ok for Hughes??? BJ got his face pounded into the mat and GSP tapped, no excuses!

by JV on Aug 5, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love BJ, but Hughes punished him in the crucifix. Its a fight, fighters get injured. He’s 1 and 1 with BJ. Hughes was a great fighter, but everyone caught up to him. Look Royce was the best b/c no one knew bjj. Put him in there now and he gets pounded. Its the evolution of the sport.

by TC on Aug 5, 2008 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i did not make any excuses i told it like it is, hughes did not pull off some miracle victory over bj he got beat the first fight and bj got injured in the 2nd fight so hughes won, he did not pull out some submision or take over the fight with his striking or ground game bj got hurt and thats how he won.

It’s more ridiculous to not have GSP in the top 4 fighters. It’s ludicrous to have BJ above him. It baffles me how so many have BJ above GSP. What merrits this? GSP has fought nothing but the best and beat them ALL, INCLUDING BJ. I don’t get it.

by Gord on Aug 6, 2008 2:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gord, I dont deny how good GSP is. He is on of my favorite fighters. THe facts are that many people including myself think that GSP will loose to BJ in the rematch. BJ gave GSP hell in the 1st fight and thats when Bj was a fat, out of shape slob. With his new found dedication and cardio, many of us think he is virtually invincible at 155lbs and 170 lbs. Truth is that BJ isnt the only one who has gotten better since their 1st fight. GSP has also improved leaps and bounds since then which is why I think it will be on eof the best and biggest fights in UFC history. I cant wait to see them fight for 5 rounds.

My question to all of you guys: Who du think will be the favorite and what do u think the odds will be when GSP faces BJ penn for a second time?

by john on Aug 6, 2008 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ro-J, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think BJ has no heart and has bought into his own hype. BJ ha already LOST to GSP. BJ has only improved his cardio while GSP has improved his over-all skill (and probably his cardio) during the same time. So what makes anyone think BJ will take out GSP???

CHeck out what Lesnar had to say about Mazzagatti! He is absolutely right and its about time he fired away at that wet Rat for costing him the Mir fight and making us fans sit through a BS title fight between NOg and the undeserving frank Mir! Read it:

“I never received a warning and I was told in the locker room that I would. It’s just an inconsistency in the reffing by that particular referee. Every fight I watch him ref there’s just a lot of inconsistency. I thought I won the fight when they stopped it. He was raising my hand and to this day I’ve never seen someone get their hand raised (unless they’ve won).”

He isnt lying either!

Name 5 WWs that would undoubtedly beat Matt Hughes once he heals his knee………you cant. There may be 5 to 7 WW that could beat Matt Hughes on any given night however there isnt 5 WW out there that without a doubt would be Hughes. I mean guys like KOS, Diego, Karo, Fitch may have what it takes to beat Hughes just as Hughes has the skills to beat any one of them. Do I think Fitch would give Hughes a run for his money………of course I do. He most likely would win but its not a given that he would dominate Hughes. Aside from GSP, and a 185 LB Alves nobody in the welterweight division would just walk through Matt Hughes.

hughes def belongs in the hof but is not the greatest ww of all times cuz all of time has not passed. he was the best of his era and thats pretty good. he did not evolve his game at all and everyone is passing him by. hughes needs to retire now to salvage whats left of any respect thats left of him. like alot are comparing him to ken. i agree. serra will beat him badly, just like jacob beat ken. hughes will then pick a fight with someone else and will continue to sully his career. i respect what matt did as a fighter and he deserves credit for that, but i never liked him as a person ( why is it that the relegious zealots are always so arrogant) and saying that alves is not top 5 is like saying the he himself is not a top 50 fighter. every time he lost right after the fight, during the rogan interview, he was always repectful and gave props, but when a litle time passed he would go back and say things like that he really wasnt trying hard or hadnt been training the right way and would use alot of excuses and every time he won it was because of how hard he trained and how he trained, his way, the right way. what made him train so differently or care less about a fight? nothing. matt…..shut up and retire!

Well said…..Hughes killed his own reputation by participating as a coach on TUF – before then, he was very well respected as a fighter and a person.

After he showed what kind of person he really is on the show, the only thing left to respect is fighting. I give him credit for what he did when he was champ – no one can take that away from him. That said, he hasn’t concerned himself with becoming a complete MMAist, so now he’s stuck watching guys pass him by.

I shouldn’t respond to your comment because it’s so poorly written but I really want to ask a question.

No one has done what he has done at that weight.

by DDT on Aug 5, 2008 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So poorly written? Like, “the greates WW”?

What are you talking about? Reading comprehension, ever heard of it. He is not the greatest WW weight of all time because there are better fighters then him currently fighting. He has lost his last 2 fights. He was, however, the greatest of his era, just like b.w. said.

by BNF on Aug 5, 2008 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

b.w…..agree with what you said. Hughes deserves respect for what he did when he did it, but the truth is that he hasn’t concerned himself with evolving into a complete MMAist.

His wresting & strength were enough 5 years ago, but 5 years in MMA is like 50 years in any other sport, due to its’ infancy.

He had everyone’s respect until he showed his true colors on TUF. After that, I’ll respect his wins as a champ, but he’s the definition of an asshole from a personality standpoint. If you don’t want to train, evolve and fight, please go away. Not many, if anyone at all, cares about his opinion. He only has himself to blame for that. I still have a hard time grasping what a prick he was on the show….to his own guys!!

by TonyDrip on Aug 5, 2008 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BNF AND TONY DRIP. well said and thanks. DDT i didnt do a good job of typing (too fast), but you should have been able to understand it easily. i think gsp is the greatest ww ever until someone beats him. his win over herion, mayhem, trigg, b.j.(close one),hughes(twice),koscheck and serra are more impressive than any of the fights that hughes won as a champ or as a challenger. if B.J.PENN wouldnt have had a fallout with the ufc after his 1rst fight with hughes, hughes would not be thought of as highly as he is now. b.j. would have dominated as the champ and hughes would not have nearly as many title defenses. hughes’es career benefitted from that greatly and he is lucky b.j. left when he did. hope you can understand that.

by b.w. on Aug 5, 2008 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The out come of their rematch (and Hughes would have got an immediate rematch) and the fact that GSP was in the UFC by then makes it a little hard for me to understand that BJ would dominate the WW division. BJ is 0-2 in the WW after his 1st and ONLY win at WW. He wouldn’t have been off to a great start at dominating by losing his first 2 fights, that’s for sure. Hope you can understand that.

he was once the most dominant champ ever but that was like 3-4 years ago. He is far from the hybrid athletes that have now entered the octagon, making him a very one-dimensional fighter. His standup has never improved but his he has a short reach so it wouldn’t matter and his takedowns are terrible. the only thing I see for matt winning is a lucky submission after getting knocked down or purposedly falling on his back. Hes getting too old….I think my bet is on Serra if that fight ever happens.

@ JOHN

To reply to one of your earlier comments, Mark Hughes has already fought in the UFC so he wouldnt be making his debut getting KO by Alves.

As far as Hughes, HES A LEGEND, it doesnt matter what happens you can never take that from him. Just like Royce, Saku, Shamrock all the guys you seem to hate. Its true, none of these guys can hang with the top WW fighters these days, but they already paid their dues man.

Is he a dik?? yes, but i dont judge fighters by their personality, religion, appearance, etc.. I like him as a fighter, he accomplished more than most people dream of and thats a fact. Thats the history of it, if you like him or not means nothing, he IS a legend pure and simple…

I think Matt comes off arrogant so if he draws the negative responses above he deserves it. As far as saying he overrated or never that good that’s BS I think he can still compete his real problem is he should train with other teams and take their direction the worst thing to happen to a fighter is to believe the hype and go into a fight thinking I just have to show up and do my thing and everyone will fall "Matt" if you want to be great again become a student if your the master train other fighters and enjoy your retirement there is no shame in eithor

It’s funny, I used to really like watching Matt Hughes up until the season on TUF when he was dissing GSP. I left there feeling like he was kind of douche.

However… however… just prior to this new breed of fighter we are seeing come up, I enjoyed watching him fight. The old Matt Hughes who would take just about anyone down and G/P them out. Good times… and made the sport exciting to watch to see who the next victim was.

For me, it was during his 2006 fight with BJ Penn that it became REAL apparent that he was getting out classed. Prior to that he dominated a lot of those earlier fights and had quite a run with some top competition. (besides when BJ got him earlier!)

His subsequent stand-up fighting showed him to be flat footed and seemingly unskilled against the likes of GSP and BJ who are real technicians.

I didn’t listen to the audio of Matt so I can’t comment on that specifically.

These new fighters are just too well rounded for anyone who only has 1 or 2 core strengths.

This means that guys like Lesnar have a ways to go before they’re ready to compete for titles.

I’m not a huge Hughes fan or anything but he clearly said

‘I don’t know about that’

He then went out to say he has no idea who would be ranked where and he doesn’t keep track of it.

So, he didn’t say Alves wasn’t one of the top guys, he didn’t say a single negatiev thing about him.

Topic is misleading.
