Hermes Franca vs Gleison Tibau UFC 90 fight set

Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylists Hermes Franca (18-7) and Gleison Tibau (15-6) will likely tangle at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25, according to Sherdog.com.
It’s a 155-pound clash that pits two fighters on back-to-back losing skids against one another.
Franca dropped a unanimous decision to Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin" back in July. It was his first fight back after serving a 12-month suspension for steroid use. He is a former number one title contender who reeled of eight straight wins before losing to then UFC Lightweight Champion, Sean Sherk, at UFC 73: "Stacked" in July 2007.
Tibau has a losing record inside the Octagon (2-3), but those three defeats have come against the likes of top fighters such as Nick Diaz, Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson. He most recently succumbed to a crushing "Daddy" guillotine choke at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" last month.
UFC 90 features several solid match ups, including the 185-pound tilt between UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote, as well as the huge welterweight showdown between Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez.

Gleison Tibau looks like the biggest 155 lbr in the division, I don’t know how much longer he can cut that weight and be effective. He’s only 24 years old I hope he doesn’t go the way of Joe Riggs as a guy with immense potential but just can’t put it together in the ring yet.

This should be a really good fight. Tibau is a huge LW, but Franca should do much better against a non-wrestler.

Rogan is gonna be creaming his pants over this fight.

Great Jits fight match up.. I’m leaning towards Franca on this one.

I think Franca is facing tougher times now, i don’t think the story is gonna be different against Tibau, Tibau should get the win here.

This is a fabulous fight! Another great match up by JKoe Silva!
Whats up with all the lightweights fightinhg in Chi town?
UFC 90:
Silva vs. Cote
TYson Griffin vs. Sherk (rumored)
Spencer Fisher vs. Melvin Guilard
Tibau vs. Franca!
I am a big fan of Franca and I am starting to really like Tibau as well. These 2 are big lightweights and it should be an outstanding fight.
PhilQny called it, it will be an outstanding display of ju jitsu. I am really looking forward to this fight!

Franca on roids or off? On roids…Franca. Off roids…Tibau. Tibau is a big boy for LW. Good fight though.

Loser is out. The LW division is too deep to keep a fighter with a 3-fight losing streak around, regardless of who his opponents were.

Just because you cant beat the top five guys doesnt mean you get booted. Every fight i can remember these two in has been a great fight. Correct me if i am wrong but doesnt entertaining the fans count for something.

I doubt that Hermes or Tibau are going anywhere! Hermes is a top fighter who looses to other tough guys. 2 tough guys fight, someone has to loose. If it was 3 losses and out, he wouldnt be fighting such a tough guy like Tibau!

To a point, yes. But they are fighters first, entertainers second. For pure entertainment watch WWE.

Tibau has great wrestling. His stand up is stellar. He was dominating stevenson until he fell into that guillotine. Should be a good fight. i give it to tibau.

I agree…I think Franca will have a bit of ring rust too.
by Shadyone33 on Aug 5, 2008 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions
u do realize he just fought for 15 minutes last month?
by john on Aug 5, 2008 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions
Ring rust may have played a role when he lost to Frankie Edgar recently, but will not be a factor in this fight. But he seemed to be a little gassed last time. If he can come in shape he should get the W.
by BNF on Aug 5, 2008 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
I guess fighters now-a-days need to fight twice a month to keep that dreaded rust away. HAHA!

If both guys come in shape, this could end up being fight of the year. A great match between two very good jiujitsu players. I have no predictions, other than it will be an excellent fight.

Say goodbye to Gleison Tibau he loses he is gone.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Aug 5, 2008 10:54 AM EDT reply actions
Could say the same for both really. Franca is on thin ice, roids ban then two losses = out of a job.
Shame really because i like them both and love watching their top drawer jits.
by Nick J on Aug 5, 2008 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I wish Forrest hadn’t started saying “Jits”. I’m not sure why, I just do.
by --utaptout-- on Aug 5, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
u realize fighters have been calling Ju jitsu Jits forever! u really think Forrest started it? LMAO. Have u ever heard of Josh Barnett? He has been saying it for years. We abreviate a ton of words on this site why not type jits instead of ju jitsu.
Some of u guys are really anal!

should be a sick ground war, both are huge lw’s and i cant wait to see these two grapple. ill be betting on franca though
by medecineballs on Aug 5, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions
Franca should take this one. Hopefully he can end it with some wild looping haymakers, like he did to Spencer Fisher. That fight was awesome.
by Ballam on Aug 5, 2008 11:52 AM EDT reply actions
i really hope loser of this doesnt leave town when you have the likes of Per Eklund, rob Emerson, Matt Grice, Corey Hill, Samy Schiavo, and Denis Siver somehow still in the UFC….im not saying they shouldnt be in the UFC im just saying there not in the same class as a Franca or Tibau so i would hate to see Franca or Tibau go and have one of them guys stay.
Tibau maj.dec. …. he will take Franca down all day
by wm133 on Aug 5, 2008 1:52 PM EDT reply actions
I wonder if Franca could make the cut to 145 and make a run for Faber. Urijah needs some competition down there anyway, and Franca could be a tough match for him. If Tyson Griffin was smart, he’d do it. He’s the only guy that has ever beaten Urijah. Tyson can’t decision his way to a belt at 155. He hasn’t finished an opponent in the UFC since his first fight. Its a shame too, because his fight are always entertaining otherwise. BTW, when is Nate Diaz gonna get some top fights?

LOL wow I went a little off topic in this one

Don’t both of these guys train at ATT in Florida? I’m glad to see that team mates/training partners are willing to go head up. I hate hearing how some fighters won’t fight because they’re in the same camp. I understand why. But it still sucks
