Spencer Fisher vs Melvin Guillard UFC 90 fight possible in Chicago

spencer fisher melvin guillard
Lightweight brawlers Spencer Fisher (21-4) and Melvin Guillard (21-7-2) could throw leather at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25.

"The King" reportedly made the announcement over the weekend at the International Mixed Martial Arts Convention (IMMAE) at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center in Long Beach, Calif.; however, no bout agreements have been signed at this time.

Fisher is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 Finale in June. The Miletich Fighting Systems veteran has won two of his last four bouts, including a rematch against Sam Stout at UFC Fight Night 10 more than one year ago.

He is a former 155-pound contender. And he’ll need to put together back-to-back wins to prove that he still belongs among the division’s elite.

Guillard made a triumphant return to the Octagon at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" last month, needing just 36 seconds to take out Dennis Siver. "The Young Assassin" has tremendous potential; however, personal situations outsides the cage have affected his performance inside it.

He, too, has something to prove in the match up, making it a rather intriguing bout. Fisher clearly has the all around edge, but Guillard could score an upset here.

It all more than likely depends on which Guillard shows up.

Guess I could be wrong but wouldn’t Guillard be a step down for Fisher??

by O damn he got caught on Aug 4, 2008 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

joe Silva put together a good one here! Stylistically they are perfect for each other. Spencr wil be the favorite but Melvin sure has a punchers chance, especially when fighting a guy like fisher who will be willing to stand n trade with Melvin.

by john on Aug 4, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I guess the only thing i was looking at is I’ve seen Fisher go the distance plenty of times and just stay consistently good through out the fight. It seems like Guillard has problems the deeper the fight goes.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 4, 2008 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

your not wrong, Melvin is kind of a step down for Spencer, but thats only because Melvin is an underachiever. he could do much better than he has shown. The reason i like this fight is because they will Bang it out. Spencer isnt close to title contention so I really dont mind him fighting Melvin!

by john on Aug 5, 2008 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

He may be a step down, experience-wise. But talentwise, Guillard is just as explosive. He just gets caught always[like in the Clementi fight]but this fight could propel him to the upper echelon of the division, should he beat “The King” Fisher…

by TheNegation on Aug 4, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Guillard has over 40 professional mma fights doesnt he?

by RyanHobbs on Aug 4, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I know it says over 30 up top, but for some reason, I thought otherwise. Either way, that is a great deal of experience for someone so young.

by RyanHobbs on Aug 4, 2008 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes it’s true. For a young guy, he has already a lot of sanctioned MMA fights. Well i guess I stand corrected. Both I guess are equal when it comes to “Octagon Exposure”. I believe they both debuted back in 2005…

by TheNegation on Aug 4, 2008 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Not too much of a step down, Fisher is 2-2 in his last 4 fights and on a 1 win streak. Melvin is coming off a nice win in his return to the UFC.

I see it as a chance for Melvin to prove he belongs in the UFC or a chance for Spencer to start making the march toward the top again.

You can’t always fight someone at your exact same level.

by DDT on Aug 4, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I think Spencer could get hurt in this one.

He’ll want to trade but will come off worse.

by Automation on Aug 4, 2008 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

Hey Automation, Thanks for the heads up on the WEC on the web link. It actually worked. Stuttgart, AR was a much happier place on Sunday night.

by Jrandolph on Aug 4, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Glad to be of service ;)

by Automation on Aug 5, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, you got that up fast! thanks. And i think this is a great fight. I think Spencer will stay out of Guillards power and get a split decision. Or he might try to sub him.

by chris on Aug 4, 2008 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Im calling it right now. Melvin will either win by KO or lose by choke.

by Jizzo on Aug 4, 2008 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

ha i agree with you on that!

by tuffguy01 on Aug 4, 2008 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

lol that sounds about right

by brendan on Aug 4, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a step down for Spencer, and I expect to see him annihilate Guillard. Melvin doesn’t belong in the UFC, in my and many others’ opinions.

by WebGarden on Aug 4, 2008 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

He’s got some talent, i’ve just never liked his attitude. He seemed a bit humbled after his last couple loss’s though. Thing is I’d have rather seen a Spencer Fisher vs Rich Clementi, I just think Spencer’s out of Guillards league here. His only loss’s are Hermes Franca, Sam Stout and Frank Edgar, and the Sam stout loss was avenged and only happened cause of the short notice. Melvin’s in trouble on this one, imo..

by O damn he got caught on Aug 4, 2008 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, a guy with a 40-8 record who is 4-3 in the Octagon is a bum and needs to be thrown out. Good call.

by DDT on Aug 4, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Melvin has a ton of potential, but I think this will be his last fight in the UFC….at least for a while.

Spencer has a great chin, so I don’t expect him to get KO’d. He’s too well rounded for Melvin.

Melvin hinted at going to the WEC in the past. I think this will be his going away party.

by TonyDrip on Aug 4, 2008 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

me too. i never liked either fighter, but gulliard seems like a choker(no pun intended). if he doesnt get the quick ko he gets subbed. both have showed a arrogant side in the past. melvin is the better athelete, but relys on his punching power too much and doesnt seem to want to try to improve his all-around game, thinking he is better than what he is. he was like that on tuf, bragging to no end and then lost his 1rst fight to burkman. he doesnt seem to have changed a whole lot since. if spencer plays it safe, he could get an easy gnp victory or maybee another quick sub.

Thanks Ruan.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of video sites in my favourites. Not one has Icon Sport’s latest event.

I’m pinning my hopes on The Mymus recommendation.

I forgot to ask Ruan. Are you going to UFC 89??

I’m sure I heard a rumour that a UFC event could be held in Scotland. Don’t know where I saw it or if it was just a fantasist post.

by Automation on Aug 4, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude if ur lying then i’ll need to take back my lap on honour cos that would be awesome and it would save alot of money travelling, imagine the night out if it was in glasgow or edinburgh lol:D:D:D.

Na man not going to this 1, still paying off ufc85 lol need to clear the credit card before doing anything else. U heading down man??

Any luck finding the fight?

by ruan-fiy on Aug 4, 2008 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Fisher a ton – he usually puts on a show (unless he’s repreatedly being taken down – a la Edgar). Guillard is explosive so this could be a very good fight.

I’m not sure about Guillard’s chin. He was dropped by Stevenson in what appeared to be a lazy hook so Spencer (who has shown to have KO power) could easily get the KO here. That being said, Guillard also has heavy hands.

Regardless of Guillard’s personal demons, and the questions surrounding whether this is a step down for Fisher, this is a fight I’d like to see.

by WADZ on Aug 4, 2008 5:37 PM EDT reply actions

Well, he leaned into Joe’s punch, so he kinda helped himself to the canvas on that one. Should be ok unless it gets stopped on a cut, I can definatley see Spencer getting cut open pretty good on this one.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 4, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

But other than a cut stoppage, or the stand up KO out of nowhere I don’t see Guillard taking this.

by O damn he got caught on Aug 4, 2008 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

i’m pissed that guillard is still even in the UFC. they guy’s a damn boxer. go box. he’s probably the worst MMA fighter out there…since he has zero sub game, either offense or defense. he got teabagged by rich clementi!

by garth on Aug 4, 2008 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

I understand your dislike of Guillard, but to say that he’s the “worst” MMA fighter is a stretch. I still have him in the top 10 UFC LW fighters under contract today.

If this fight happens it will be competitive…any time a guy with Guillard’s KO ability steps into the octagon, the fight could either way. That being said, I’d still put my bet on Fisher to win via KO or Sub.

by WADZ on Aug 4, 2008 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Penn
Sherk
Florian
Huerta
Grffin
Edgar
Maynard
Stevenson
Wiman
Diaz…

How can you have Guillard in your top 10 in the LWD?
This is just the best 10 IMO, Guillard couldn’t beat any of them. He’s a joke and needs to leave the UFC

by Chase on Aug 4, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Fighters who are worse than Teabag Guillard:
Danny Abbadi
Andy Wang
Justin McCully
Marlon Sims

by PW on Aug 4, 2008 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I would put Guida ahead of Guillard as well.

by Jrandolph on Aug 4, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

’Chase" – a SOLID list. You definitely have a point…and there are actually other names that are likely considered above Guillard:
Etim
Stevens
Tibau

I guess that’s why they have the actual fights. On any given night I can see Guillard KO’ing any number of the aforementioned fighters. I’m definitely not Guillard fan and do not want to see him succeed in the UFC, but I do recognize his talents. He’s a threat to any LW not named Penn, Sherk, Florian, or Stevenson

by WADZ on Aug 4, 2008 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see him as a threat to more then that, all the others are way more well rounded and yeah I forgot Guida Jrandolph, and Tavarez. Guilard is only good in his stand up, other then that he’s nothing, and all the fighters i named could easily take him to the ground and demolish him. Im from Louisiana, and i just hate the guy. Fisher isn’t even that good I think, he’s a call that can’t hang with the big names aswell. so If guillard does beat fisher, i wouldn’t be impressed.

by Chase on Aug 4, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

You put Pellegrino and Clay Guida below Matt Wiman?

by RyanHobbs on Aug 4, 2008 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I favor Matt Wiman.

by Chase on Aug 4, 2008 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I place Rich “No Love” Clementi above Guillard. Melvin is still a way’s off from the Top 10. This win though will bring him 1 step closer[that is if he wins, hehe!!]

by TheNegation on Aug 5, 2008 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Why is Mr Teabag still in the UFC???wtf??? Lost a some respect for UFC for keeping this thug.

by DirtbagHtr on Aug 5, 2008 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

If Spencer decides to stand and bang with Melvin, it could go either way, I think Spencer goes in there smart works a ground game and finishes Melvin with a choke.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Aug 4, 2008 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

that wuld be the smart thing to do for sure! Melvin has a punchers chance against anyone, so UIf Fisher is smart he will take him to the ground where Melvin is like a fish out of water, but Fisher is a crowd pleaser and may elect to Bang it out with Melvin, which would make for a very entertaining fight.

Someone as athletic as Melvin, should have a much better takedown defense at 155 lbs, then he has shown!

by john on Aug 5, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

i like both fighters but would like 2 see guillard get his shit together!! if he stays grounded he could be a force 2 be reckoned with!! everyone deserves a second chance!!!

by neon on Aug 4, 2008 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

I agree neon, Melvin did seem to have a better attitude last fight but he still has a long way to go to get any respect. I think Spencer will be too crafty for Melvin. It will be interesting to see what Melvins reaction will be after the loss…

by trav-dog on Aug 4, 2008 6:14 PM EDT reply actions

I guess Bank Stanchion was busy.
I’d rather see Franca fight Guillard.

by KS on Aug 4, 2008 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

Fisher (RNC)

by braveheart on Aug 4, 2008 6:58 PM EDT reply actions

I think this will be a great fight. I see Fisher fighting the smart fight and taking it though.

by WB on Aug 4, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

i think this has the potential to be fight of the night for sure. both fighters like to stand and bang. Technically fisher has the better stand up be he has been knocked out by hermes franca and we all know melvin probably has the most power in his hands out of any fighter in the lightweight division. I think spencer needs to setup takedowns by using strikes because melvin has really good wrestling and takedown defense but once he is on the ground he really has no chance but he has stated he has been working hard on his ground game so we will see.

by matt on Aug 4, 2008 7:07 PM EDT reply actions

i agree with ya WB, fishers just to mental of a fighter IMO to run out the and trade shots with melvin. i expect him to come in with a good game plan and ‘impose his will.’ hes gonna have melvin in some quicksand real quick if he plays his game

by medecineballs on Aug 4, 2008 7:11 PM EDT reply actions

Fischer 1st round flying knee uppercut!

by Ognitinoc on Aug 4, 2008 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

Yea this is a dumb match up for melivin same outcome as the clementi fight just a hell of alot faster

by DBG on Aug 4, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Spencer has this one, but Im never one to bet against Guillard and that great knockout power of his.

by Liddell-Marquardt-GSP-Sherk on Aug 4, 2008 9:43 PM EDT reply actions

Melvin has this one! he’ll dominate Spencer in the standup since Fisher has never seen the speed and power that Melvin brings.. Melvin can take him down at will too and pound him out

by RoB on Aug 4, 2008 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

this fight has potential for guillard to break out and MAYBE making a highlight reel out of a tough SOB like fisher. guillard is like chuck. he doesn’t need kicks. he walked through dennis siver about the same as lytle did to kyle bradley. i would suggest looking that 1 up and saving this 1 on DVR HD. slo mo knockout, rewind, replay, slo mo different angle all day.

by kama kaze on Aug 4, 2008 11:02 PM EDT reply actions

melvin es el numero uno punto con un record de 40 victorias reinara en la division de los lijeros le va a patear el trasero a spencer fisher jajajaja
