UFC Quick Quote: Kenny Florian could 'run over' Roger Huerta at UFC 87

kenny florian

"Kenny could run over Roger if he really wants to, or he could allow Roger to give Kenny a fight. I think Kenny’s ability to harness his energy and ability to control his aggression and not become emotionally attached to the fight -- like Roger likes to fight -- is going to give Kenny the technical advantage that he needs. If Roger is able to get in Kenny’s head and make him fight a sloppy, wild, Roger Huerta (Pictures)-style of fight, then obviously that type of fight fits Roger Huerta (Pictures). Kenny knows he not only needs to use his technical abilities, but he also needs to play a very mental game with Roger … make sure Roger doesn’t take him out of the element of his technical ability and turn him into a brawler. I know Roger’s going to try to do that, and that’s what we’re going to try to avoid in this fight."

-- Mark DellaGrotte -- the esteemed MMA mad scientist at Sityodtong U.S.A. -- talks to Sherdog.com about the keys to victory for his fighter, Kenny Florian, at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" when he locks up with Roger Huerta in a 155-pound number contender eliminator match. The article indicates that leading up to the fight at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on August 9 that "El Matador" has been attempting to bait Florian into perhaps straying from his gameplan on fight night. However, if Florian can resist the temptation to brawl and impose his will then DellaGrotte appears to indicate that Florian will handle the hometown poster boy.

Kenflo by submission 2nd round

Huerta won’t tapp i say they are gonna stop this fight due to TKO/Stoppgage cause Florians elbows are going to be crazy!

If Huerta wins will he get a new BIG MONEY contract? Or will he leave the UFC if he loses with 1 fight on his contract…

Roger Huerta to Dana White
“Show me the money!”

Why doesn’t Huerta just come out and say “I can’t beat BJ” He already talked about going to 170 and now he’s talking about leaving the UFC.

by Arnold on Aug 1, 2008 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry but I don’t think anyone other than BJ will run right through Huerta. Kenny might win, but it wont be easy.
Huerta keeps getting better and better and now that he is training with GSP and the other beasts at Greg Jackson’s camp, LOOK OUT! We will see the best Huerta that we have seen so far. Florian is the more technical striker, but not necessarily the better striker. I would actually say that there striking is pretty even, but they have very different styles. Huerta has more KO capabilities in my opinion. Only way Florian has of finishing the fight is by submission, but Huerta showed wonderful submission defense against Alberto Crane who is a submission wizard.
The only other way that Kenny finishes fights is by those cheesy cuts. Florian could never fight in Japan where elbows are not allowed. I am a big fan of Florian but I hate that he runs around talking about how he finishes fights when in fact, he doesn’t finish anyone, the Dr’s do. I would rather see a fight go to the decision then end by a cut.

The mental aspect will be very important in this fight. HUerta is a warrior who has proved that he can be dominated, but keep his head and stay in the fight and win it, he showed that against Guida. Last time I saw Florian dominated was against Sherk, and I dont know but it kind of seemed like he was “broken” by Sherk in the later rounds of that fight.

This will be a very competitive fight. Whoever wins is going to have to go through Hell first. IMO, Florian should be the favorite, but Huerta has a good chance of winning the fight. I feel that it is much closer than many of you guys seem to think.

by john on Aug 1, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think anyone is going to “run over” Huerta. He’s been in some tough battles in there. These guys are two of my favorite fighters, so I’m hoping for and expecting a fast and entertaining fight.

i think Kenny will win but I’ll take my chance on Roger with the points.

Right on john!I don’t know why they keep sayin’ Florian will bust through Huerta or some sh1t, but seriously, Huerta will give Ken-Flo a run for his money. Enough of these naysayers puttin’ Huerta out of the picture. This is MMA and you already know when it comes to predictions. Predictions are bullsh1t!

by TheNegation on Aug 2, 2008 6:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Huerta thinks he is getting GSP money?? He might aswell just leave now..I like Huerta and am a HUGE fan, but he really needs to shut-up about money right now…

As far as this fight goes?

Dellagrotte always talks this way about all his fighters..Nothing new..Just because he thinks Kenny could “run-over” Roger, that doesn’t sell me on a definite winner…

IMO- This fight will be off the hook!..I see Kenny winning the first round 10/8..I see Kenny throwing everything he has at Roger..Then Kenny gets frustrated because he cant finish this guy, and makes a costly mistake..Thats when Roger wins the fight..Waiting for the mistake..

If Kenny does win?? IMO- It will be decision..I cant see Kenny “I finish fights” Florian stopping Huerta..But I can see Roger stopping Kenny..

by Stagger-Lee on Aug 1, 2008 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really Stagger? I see it exactly the opposite. Huerta is know for being wild, aggressive, and careless, which in turn, often makes his opponnent fight that way as well. Kenny is waaaay too intelligent to fall for that. Kenny is the more tecnical fighter that can capitolize on any small mistake made by Huerta. And Huerta’s loose cannon style always leaves him open.

Even if Kenny does make a small mistake, I don’t see Roger being able to capitolize. Huerta submittin Kenny is almost out of the question.

If the fight goes to a decision, then Huerta has a chance because he will most likely be trying to outwork Florian. Plus, Roger is more accustomed to fighting 3 rull rounds then Kenny is. Kenny finished fights! I think that either of these guys can finsish the other, but there is a MUCh better chance of Kenny finishing Roger. Not knowing what will hhappen in the fight, if it does go 3 rounds, like I said, Roger will be husseling to try and outwork Kenny to out point him on the scorecards.

by ViolentMike on Aug 1, 2008 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ViolentMike, I might be a little biased on account of, I am a big Huerta fan(but I am also a kenny fan)..But When I try to look at the match-up, from an unbiased stand-point, I still have Huerta winning imo via TKO late 2nd…

I agree with most of your analysis..I do think that Roger will come out “wild and aggressive”.And that will lose him the 1st round, but I am not to sure about “careless”-he is training with GSP-, and that should make him more “careful”…I dont see Kenny being able to ko or tko Roger..Kenny could very well submit Roger, but I dont see that either.-not in the 1st rnd anyways-.

Roger has taken alot of time off, and that might be a factor aswell…Bottom line for me is;
I dont see Kenny being able to finish Roger..But I could see Roger getting a TKO..(i agree no sub 4 roger)..But if the fight is on the way to a decision, I dont think it will be in Rogers favor..Roger will get desperate and finish the fight on fear of losing..
If he cant finish? imo-Kenny gets the nod on the decision..

it cant hurt to have gsp and greg jackson on your side, but roger better have his head on the fight not his salary.

FRIDAY MORNING CONVERSATION WITH KEVIN:
Well guys, the responses have been amazing this week. the commeradery we got going is unreal. I will be here in a limited capacity today. Got home at 6 (it’s now 7:30), slept an hour and now have to get a new tire for my car! Anyways, good to see everyone taking part in my lame ass conversations! Kinda upset, for some reason I thought GSP/Fitch was tomorrow. Talk to you guys later!

I don’t see any way that Huerta wins this fight. Kenflo beats Huerta in every category. Wrestling. BJJ. Standup. Experience. Easy money on Kenflo.

by TabascoSAUCE on Aug 1, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Easy money on Ken-Flo that could also “easily” go down the drain. Huerta will bring home the W. But as b.w. puts it, he better shut his yap about the money issues and stick to his gameplan. And that I think is to destroy Florian!

Kenny by TKO. Huerta is going to get jacked up.

i guess we’ll have to wait and see. objectively i would be surprised if kenny handles huerta though. i saw some positioning holes in kenny’s last fight that a bigger stronger huerta will totally capitalize on given the chance. but, you know, overall kenny is definitely the more cerebral, technical, skilled guy. we’ll see if he can put it together for this one. if he actually finishes roger than he’s without question ready for another big title fight.

by Phil Baloni on Aug 1, 2008 9:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kenny held his own against sherk and he is the biggest 155 pounder. Huerta is big not sherk big

by mrfancypants on Aug 1, 2008 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t say held his own, I’d say hung in there. He was dominated and over powered the whole fight. It went 5 rounds because, well, Sherk’s style isn’t really conducive to finishing an opponent is it?

by DSmith on Aug 1, 2008 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did anyone else think that Sherk Broke Kenny in that fight? I dunno butthats just how I interpret the last couple of rounds

by john on Aug 1, 2008 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t say that he broke Kenny, Kenny was just frustrated, because he was unable to stop the takedowns and Sherk from lying on top of him. Sherks strength and power won that fight for him, that is all he had against Kenny in fact that was all had against Franca and most of his other opponents. Kenny never stopped trying to win and he was a lot more technical in the match with his striking and going for subs, but Sherks roid strength tended to cancell out everything he was trying and I think he was just frustrated with that. If Sherk never had the power he has got, he would not have won half the fights he has. Didn’t seem to work with BJ though.

by Ade on Aug 1, 2008 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If that fight had gone another round or two Sherk would have died from blood loss.

by PW on Aug 1, 2008 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yah I don’t like ken-flos elbows. That’s a cheap way out. Its one thing to throw elbows to try and hurt a guy and I mean trying to knock their ass out, but kenny throws them with just the point of his skinny ass elbows just trying to cut the guy so the Doc will stop the fight. I’m rooting for Roger in this fight but would not be surprised to see Ken-flo pull this one out.

by brac on Aug 1, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny is a lot stronger than he looks, the only guy he had problem with was Sherk.

Im mexican if you havn’t guessed it. Im not picking Huerta because he is mexican. I think he is the better fighter and have been a fan of his since his first fight in the UFC. And by you saying thats “the way mexicans are,” you’re being ignorant in an attempt to say that all mexicans will pick a mexican or latino fighter no matter his skill level. So i guess all white people just pick white fighters too? Keep race out of it dude. No one really factors in a fighters race in winning, well at least people who aren’t ignorant.

by the_mexicutioner on Aug 1, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would agree to mikeybear’s point to a certain degree.

However, I think its less ‘race’ rather than ‘nationality’ when supporting a fighter. There’s no doubt that countrymen have their civic pride. Look at the audience when fighters are announced in the ring. GSP/Canadian flags. CroCop/Croatian flags. Ortiz/Mexican flags. Silva/Brazilian flags. etc. Its a beautiful thing.

I’m Filipino, and have a tendancy to support guys like Manny Pacquiao or Brandon Vera. Would I bet my mortgage that they would win every fight? No. Would I pick them to win every fight? No. Would I think Brandon Vera has a chance against Anderson Silva at LHW? HELL F*CKING NO! But would I still support my countryman? Damn Straight!

I think that’s the point mikeybear was trying to make. Put national pride of being Mexican aside and look at it skill for skill, he’s still picking the non-Mexican fighter. I don’t think its an ignorant commment.

being proud of where you come from is one thing, but picking a guy just because he is the same race as you is racist in my opinion. Im white, but if BJ Penn was purple I would still pick him to win most fights. Make you picks based of knowledge of the sport not on the guy who is the same color as you.

I dont know why everyone is counting out Huerta. I’ll take Huerta bt decision.

by the_mexicutioner on Aug 1, 2008 10:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Because Kenny is more technically sound at every single part of the game. He has the abitly to stay patient and methodically pick apart Huerta wherever it ends up. Huerta has heart, but that will not be enough. Kenny is way too experienced to get caught up in Huerta’s plans to brawl. Kenny via TKO.

by BNF on Aug 1, 2008 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Way to experienced? The guy is 9-3. Thats 12 fights. Huerta has what, 22 and has lost how many, 1? Florian really hasn’t even beat any of the divisions top competition. He beat Lauzon after 3 or 4 illegal blows to the back of the head. Huerta is a lot stronger and quicker than Florian. The only way Florian pulls out a TKO or stoppage is because he uses his boney ass elbows and cuts Huerta open.

by the_mexicutioner on Aug 1, 2008 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Experience isn’t always just about how many fights you had. Its about WHO you fought, and where you faught them. Kenny was fighting in the UFC after just 3 pro fights. He was 2-1 (lost to Drew Fickett). Since then, ALL of his fights (9) have been in the UFC, including a shot at the title.

Huerta has 26 pro fights, 6 of them in the UFC. However, 99.9% of his UFC fights were against octagon-virgins making their UFC debut.

Randy Couture is 16-8, giving him 24 pro fights. So, to you, that means that since Huerta is more experienced than Randy Couture because he has had 26 pro fights????

by ViolentMike on Aug 1, 2008 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks VM, I was about to fire back, but I think you covered it. BTW, out of Huerta’s 6 wins in the UFC, 5 of the guys aren’t even in the UFC any more!

by BNF on Aug 1, 2008 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am undefeated against my little brother, should I get a shot at Fedor?

by john on Aug 1, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No because obviously comparing Couture to Huerta is comparing apples to oranges. Im talking about two guys that are actually going to be fighting each other in the same division. Why did Florian get a title shot, because he earned it? Does beating Cope, Karalexis and Stout make you championship material? Im sure Huerta would have beaten the same guys if given matches against them. Any top opponent he (Florian) has fought against, he has lost. In my opinion Florian, wouldn’t be able to beat Stevenson, Guida, Tyson Griffin, Frankie Edgar, Nate Diaz, and if and when Lauzon fights him again there will definitely be a different outcome. He is not gonna run through Huerta. Huerta will win via decision. The only way Kenny has a chance to get it stopped is via cuts with his boney elbows.

by the_mexicutioner on Aug 1, 2008 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Comparing Couture to Huerta is apples and oranges, huh. I would think that comparing Huerta to Tiger Woods or Rafael Nadal would be apples and oranges, but wheever…

Well, Ok smarty pants. Lets take BJ Penn as our example then, since he is the LW champ, whom Huerta could possibly be facing with a win.

Roger, as you well know, has 26 pro fights.

BJ Penn has 18 pro fights.

So you would say that Roger is nearly 50% more experienced than BJ. But you would be wrong. BJ Penn is by far the more experienced fighter, even though he has less fights.

No whatcha got?

by ViolentMike on Aug 1, 2008 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess we’ll just agree to disagree. Huerta is gonna win. If Im wrong then I’m wrong. Florian isnt a more experienced fighter because Dana gave him a title shot in a division that wasn’t stacked at the time. The only experience he got in that fight was how Sherks blood tasted with his back to the mat. And I’d take Penn over Huerta any day. You’re looking for an argument that isn’t there. You have youre opinions I have mine. I guess we’ll see who’s right on the 9th. My guess is I will be when the ‘less experienced’ Huerta beats the ‘more experienced’ Florian.

by the_mexicutioner on Aug 1, 2008 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

VM is right. You can’t argue with that logic. I don’t think that Roger has fought nothing but cans (I think Joe Silva does a better job than that and there are some good competitors on Roger’s resume). That being said looking at all of Kenflo’s opponents- I don’t think it’s a complete landslide either. Kenflo has the edge, but not by much IMO. How many Wiman’s, Jake Schultz’s and Guillard’s equal a Stout or a Sherk? Does it count that he (Roger) fought 3 times in a day and only lost tournament because his jaw was broken in the 3rd fight or had a greased up opponent (Guillard)?

by DSmith on Aug 1, 2008 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ Penn got a taste of Sherk’s blood too after he rubbed his gloves in it and licked them after the fight was over. At some point experience is a non-factor. In the Mir-Lesnar fight experience was very clearly the determining factor in that outcome. Both Kill-Flo and El Matador have had plenty of octagon battles and headline fights, so whoever wants this one more is going to get it.

I think this will be fight of the year, and I think it will come down to a razor thin split decision. I have no prediction for an outcome otherwise. I think this will be an incredible chess match on the ground. I don’t think Kenny will be able to submit Roger, only because Alberto Crane wasn’t able to, and Alberto’s jiujitsu is even better than Kenny’s. I am looking forward to this fight even more than the other 2 big ones on the card. I wish it was a 5 rounder, because stylistically, this has the potential to be a non-stop action packed fight.

by boardRIDER on Aug 1, 2008 11:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I honestly believe this fight is a toss up. No one really gave Huerta a chance against Guida. It was supposed to be Guida’s next step to a title fight and he lost. Granted he was winning the fight but he still lost by getting caught with KO power from Huerta in the late rounds and then a choke submission. I usually have a “gut” felling on eway or the other but I’m unsure about this one and I’m just excited to see a great fight. With all the build-up I hope it’s not a 1:30 sec. blow out. I have my fingers crossed that it lives up to the hype.

by Drew on Aug 1, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Huerta is definately sloppy and very careless. I hoping that these past 6 months of training with all these new trainers partners and camps have clean that up and he technique is better. It won’t be anywhere near where Kenflo’s technical skills are but they should be a lot better. The idea that he can be ‘ran through’ by anyone but BJ is ridiculous.

I agree with that, the Guida fight showed that there is going to be nobody running through him except for maybe BJ. These guys have both improved with every fight and they both have the abilty to beat each other. I going t o go wit Kenny because I think he has the slight edge and because I learnt to stop doubting him when he kept proving me wrong in his first few fights. It will be a tough fight and am surprised some fans are not showing him a bit more respect. I know the first few guys he fought were not all that, but again, the Guida fight showed what he is made of, and I sure that match has made him an even better fighter.

I also think a key for Roger (since he obviously is a slow starter) is turning his engines on from the beginning. In the Guida fight- he could have gotten that look in his eyes (the one before the 3rd round) during the 2nd round and finished it then. He can’t wait for anything in this fight, he has to go for it from the 1st second of round 1.

by DSmith on Aug 1, 2008 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huerta is training with wrestlers @ Greg Jackson camp so I bet he’s going to TRY to come out looking like GSP or Sherk formula cuz lets face it Sherk MANHANDLED ken for 5 rounds! Huerta’s not going to be skilled or strong enough to hold ken down or finish him. Ken looked bigger than usual in his last fight and has the moves to get top position and signature finish Huerta…. while announcing the play by play. roadkill.

I think this is going to be a war. Unfortunately for Huerta, a war in which Florian wins.

I’ve gained a lot of respect for Florian since J-Lo. I actually thought Florian would lose that fight. What that fight did was wake me up to how good Florian is.

I think Florian today would destroy Sherk in a rematch.

Unfortunately for Florian, he is in a weight division like the MW division…… Ruled by an unbeatable champion

i want huerta to win because i dont like kennys cocky attitude, and his face resembles one of the characters on sesame street. Oh please GOD dont let kenny win. Keny barely won the fight against din thomas because din blew a knee out on a takedown attempt. and then kennys punk ass starts talking trash about FINISHING PEOPLE. But God if kenny does win then please let BJ kill this guy and break his left shoulder. One of my fondest memories of florian was him getting his ass dominated completley by a yound diego sanchez in the ultimate finale season one. GO HUERTA!!!!!!

I think that Kenny Florian is not only one of the cockiest guys out there, but also way overrated. I will give him credits for hist last 2 wins, but he is not going to walk through huerta. What he needs to get back to earth is another good beating like the one he got from Diego…
