Jon Fitch is the man.. I like that comment " It’s like someone stealing time from you ".. I’ve been hit hard in some past sparring sessions.. and todate.. I’ve never been KO’d.. but if I’m ever to get Ko’d ..I’ll remember what he said.

hey Phil, are you thinking about merging into MMA or just BJJ for now?

by linx on Jul 31, 2008 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Linx: This passed year of ‘07 into ’08..has been crazy for me.. my health was not up to par to even do normal regular things that most of us take for granted. I’ve been given a new shot at life. Today is ironically the last the of my physically Therapy..I was done with the mental one awhile back (Long Story). Since last week I’ve been training..BJJ/KBox/Wrestling/Cardio/Weights/all that..to answer your question.. I’m not thinking about it anymore.. I’m sure.. regardless if in my first fight I get KTFO..I will put a pair of MMA gloves and step into a cage to go to WAR with another man.

I was offered a MMA fight in late September..I have to cut ALOT of weight to cut in 2months…today I’m not as worried..cuz my coach/manager may push back my MMA debut a month later or so.. till my skills/body/and mind are all on the same page. I’m very excited in being a fan of MMA.. to be given an opportunity to compete in MMA. Whatever I do..I have to do my best. This first week of training has been a humbling experience. The body aches more and more everyday..The running..not eating what I want.. no smoking weed and drinking beer. Just training. I was going to compete in a grappling tourney this weekend in Conn. but the organizers may cancel it ..do to a lack of pre registered grapplers. There is Grappling event going down in NYC on 08.17 that is definete. Linx..meu irmao. I’m having fun.. I may soon go fight in Ohio ..which for me would be awesome.. that really love their MMA over there.. but I will first make some MMA noise in NJ first.

Anyone wanna see more Gogo’s/ and exotic BBJ techniques in MMA?

Phil: I will be happy to be the Camera man!

by john on Jul 31, 2008 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Thx man..guys.. The BJJ lifestyle is great.when you’re body/spirit/mind become a vehicle that BJJ flows through..I was always good on the ground.. a tuf roll for anyone..but my life outside the mat.. did not match up. So today I am completey devoted to learning/training/teaching the dangerously gentle art of BJJ.. but guys the MMA lifestyle is insane! When you train in the arts that we see today in MMA.. it blows my mind away.. it’s the ultimate rush.. as you guys are the elite of mma fans in the world..where if I ever had a mic in front of me.. after a fight.. I would shout you guys out.. 150%% If you can ever go to a martial arts school..train in any of the branches of MMA..seperatly or in whole..IT MAKES YOU FEEL SO GOOD!! Since I’ve put my mind into grappling in any and all events I can go to..and into fighting MMA.. the end result is important..and I’m not going to say I’ll be OK with losing a fight.. cuz I’ll be lying..but journey to the fight.. is the real pudding..like in the Silva vs Irvin countdown.. that old school warrior trainer of Silva said " The victory is in the training " Victory is ours!! When I heard him say that.. it shot chills down my spine. I comment here on mania.. I go training after work..all because I LOVE IT. This is who I am. I’ve paid my dues and got more dues to pay.. but today I live in the MMA WAY!!!!

Phil, keep us posted! I live in Philly and would definitely make the trip to Jersey to see a fellow mania fighter.

I got Fitch in this one. I’m calling it. I’m a GSP fan.. without a doubt.. but something is telling.. Fitch..will grind out a victory over GSP.

by PhilQNY on Jul 31, 2008 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree. fitch is my pick as well.

by KitsuneX on Jul 31, 2008 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

GSP out-wrestled Koscheck, and Koscheck is a better wrestler than Fitch. And if Fitch can’t wrestle his opponent to the ground and give him a thorough taint-rub he has no chance of winning.

by PW on Jul 31, 2008 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

PW: Kos on many occasions has said he has trouble holding Fitch down.. and that his wrestling/Jits is insane..Fitch has an advantege that Kos just fought GSP to a decision.. and Kos is helping Fitch out for this fight. This fight can go both ways. I could see an early victory for GSP.. or a 3rd or 4th rd victory for Fitch.

by PhilQNY on Jul 31, 2008 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I wont be surprised if Fitch wins the title. GSP has a lot to prove still. For starters I need to see him successfully defend his title. I dontthink either fighter will beat the other fighter quickly. I see this fight going into the 4th or 5th rounds, maybe even going the distance. This should be a WAR!

I think gSP, will look to show his striking (which he has put on hold in the past couple of fights).

THere skills are pretty similar, only major difference is GSP’s athleticism!

by john on Jul 31, 2008 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I would expect Kos to say that, seeing as how he and Fitch are teammates and BFFs. As much as I dislike Kos, and that’s quite a lot, he’s a very athletic and explosive wrestler, but even he had no answer for GSP.

by PW on Jul 31, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

you fail for using the term “BFF”

by KitsuneX on Jul 31, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

No way, that was just to mock Koscheck.

by PW on Jul 31, 2008 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

kos will obviously talk up fitch, therefore his word means nothing. gsp by GnP TKO, unders. i dont think gsp will ever fight like he used to, his wrestling is too good.

by eightyproof on Jul 31, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

John, if GSP still has a lot to prove when he has wins over top fighters, where is Fitch then? GSP has proven he is versatile enough to neutralize your strength and, although Fitch is more ‘mixed’ than Kos, I don’t see him having the tools to out-point GSP, IMO.

by ajadoniz on Jul 31, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Where did this fan club come from… for the past two years I felt like Tony Drip and myself were the only people claiming Fitch could take GSP – I like the support but don’t ruin my odds…

by Arnold on Jul 31, 2008 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

ajadoniz: I to am from the city of brotherly love. I dont mean that GSP has more to prove in terms of his skills. What more could u ask for" He is one of the most skilled and well rounded, not to mention the most talented and gifted fighters in the game.

What I mean when I say that he has a lot to prove, is his mental game. To take that next step into Greatness and Legendary status, he needs to prove that he can successfully defend the title, something he still has not done. Thats all I was trying to say. He will beat most welterweights at least 6/10 times, but I want to see where his head is at when its time to defend the belt. THere is a big difference mentally from being the challenger, trying to win the title and being the champion trying to defend it!

GSP has to take that next step and defend his title successfully, if not his mental game will be questioned forever. I think there is a lot of pressure on GSP in this fight.

However, I will still be betting $ on GSP! I think he takes that next step and wins this fight! I do agree that if it goes to a decision, GSP will win because like you said, Fitch wont be able to out point him!

by john on Jul 31, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey Phil, thanks for the advice on the previous thread. I have a business associate that hangs out with GSP here in Albuquerque. Everyone who knows the guy says his wrestling has evloved beyond anything they’ve ever seen. At Jackson’s Gym he hadles the LHW and some HWs. I just don’t think there’s anyone near his weightclass that could avoid being held down and pounded. If he decides to stand…well…then Fitch has a punchers chance like Serra did.

As for your fighting, good luck. I fought in college back when people still really didn’t know what BJJ was. Those were good times.

As for being knocked out, it never happened to me in competition. But it did happen in the noncontact sport of basketball. A big 6’8" guy came down with an elbow in my temple. All I remember is slowing bringing an oraange ring into focus then seeing a bunch of guys with concerned looks on their face.

I’d love to fight again but I’m turning 30. Although I’m stronger than I’ve ever been, but strength is only a third of the battle, if that.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 31, 2008 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

too close to call, we are going strength vs strength. since st pierre has become afraid to strike.

by mike on Jul 31, 2008 10:39 AM EDT reply actions

We’ll have to see, George might surprise us with some stand up this fight. He’s no slouch on the feet. Hopefully that sport psychologist talked him up on his striking.

Sports pyschologist? LOL. Holy mental frailty, Batman !

Mental advantage : Fitch.

by OJR on Jul 31, 2008 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Uh oh! You just said a big No-No to all the GSP nut-huggers on Mania. I totally agree with you, but now here comes the wave of GSP fans to defend his stand up and without mentioning it you will also get them proclaiming his wrestling skills as the best in MMA free of charge. Hahaha.

by DaneJa260 on Jul 31, 2008 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think GSP really needs any “defending” from fans. His skillset isn’t really in question is it? Or is that you’re clandestine way of expressing your opinion about his striking and wrestling?

As so many of the mma fighters say, the fight game has a huge mental component. I give props to GSP for seeking training for his mind. Hopefully, a few more fighters should seek similar methods of rounding out their game. Ie. Rampage; anyone facing Anderson Silva.

by felonious on Jul 31, 2008 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I’m definitely not doubting GSP’s skills. He’s at the top of the Welterweights because of it. Just saying I agree that he’s more cautious with his stand-up game and more likely to take it to the ground.

Most of the time when GSP and some kind of flaw in his game are mentioned in the same sentence the GSP fans responses flood in. The only thing GSP needs to defend is his belt. Clandestine… alright! Nice vocabulary. Mania should make that the word of the day.

by DaneJa260 on Jul 31, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

haha…I was thinking ‘insidious’. But I didn’t really read your comment as quite so sinister. ;)

by felonious on Jul 31, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP is the best wrestler. His stand up is top 5%. His fluidity in combining differnt styles is top 1%. His chin is questionable. If he doesn’t get popped on the button, he wins and that’s for every fight. You are wrong abt getting these nuthugging proclamations for free though. I want a dollar from everyone who reads this.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jul 31, 2008 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup, that’s about right, if Fitch can get to GSP’s chin, he could pull out a win.

by THORAZINE on Jul 31, 2008 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see Fitch taking Georges down. And I thing GSP has the better stand up and good enough submission defence to not get cought. There just aren’t that many scenarios where I see Fitch winning. I’ll give him a shot, but I’ll be picking GSP.
