UFC Quick Quote: Patrick Cote still confident he can beat Anderson Silva at UFC 90

patrick cote

"I think I have the best style to fight this guy. I have a good chin, I’ll go forward, and I think every time he fights his opponent has already lost because he’s scared of him. I know that this guy is very, very good, but we have a good game plan for the fight, and I’m 100% confident that I will win."

-- Patrick Cote shares his thoughts via Sherdog.com on his upcoming title fight with 185-pound killer, Anderson Silva, at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Ill., on October 25. Perhaps that confidence has everything to do with his current five-fight win streak after dropping his first four bouts inside the Octagon.

I have to admire Cote’s confidence and heart, but I dont see it happening.

And no matter what Cote’s gameplan is, it would just be negated by Silva’s skills. I sure hope “praying to his god” is part of Cote’s gameplan.

cote smoking crack! wonder what the spread on this is gonna be, 18 to 1?

I am pretty sure that his gameplan is “don’t get killed”, other than that, I can not see him being 100% about any gameplan against Anderson.

please dont bombard us with quotes and interview from this idiot Cote, abut how he will beat Silva, and how he isnt scared and this and that )like Irvin did). Only 2 last 2 minutes before getting KTFO by the spider

by john on Jul 31, 2008 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this will be the same situation as Irvin. we will get bombarded with Interviews and quotes from Cote about how he will do this, and do that, and beat the spider. he will tell us how he isnt afraid of Anderson….and then like Irvin, he wont see the 2nd round!

Mania, spare us the nonsense!

Is there an over/under on how long the fight will last?
I bet he makes it to round 2.

john…come on buddy…what do you expect from Cote? To just keep quiet and wait for the fight and not answer questions about it? Should he just say he’s glad for the opporunity to be on Silva’s resume and highlight reel and that he pees his pants every night thinking about Silva? The guy has an opportunity of a lifetime and he’s soaking up the limelight. Sure he doesn’t have a great chance to beat Silva but that doesn’t mean he has no chance at all. I’m Canadian so I’m hoping he puts on a good show but I know his chances are extremely slim to non-existant but I’d be happy if he could push Silva into the later rounds somehow before he gets his clock cleaned…not likely but it’d be a mini victory for Cote. The division is weak but he definitely deserves this shot and I’m happy he’s confident and I hope he comes and puts on a good show and executes a solid game plan before he goes to sleep. The fight is already booked so no need to complain about it…lets just hope for a solid fight.

I think what John’s trying to say as that Cote’s fight is still a while away. There is way less threads about Rashad Evans with his upcoming fight with the Iceman, and that fight is even close.

We had a thread on Herring training, but not an interview on how he’s going to kill Brock. I’d much rather be hearing about what Franklin and Hamill have to say about each other. What’s Palhares saying about Henderson? Has Kurt Pellegrino opened his mouth about Thiago Tavares yet? I’ve yet to hear a peep about Nate Diaz vs Josh Neer which is going to be a great fight. Clay Guida vs Mac Danzig is an awesome fight. I’ve yet to see anything here about this fight. I haven’t heard a quote from Machida or Thiago Silva about their fight yet. What are Brandon Vera and Keith Jardine saying about each other?? Did you know that every single one of these fights take place BEFORE Anderson kills Cote.

What are all of these fighters saying about each other? We don’t know, because it hasn’t been being reported on. Instead, 4 times a week we here Patrick Cote saying that he’s not scared of ANderson and that he’s going to beat him. Well Mr. Cote, we’ve already heard that from about 6 other fighters and it didn’t turn out too well for them. And quite frankly, you are the WORST fighter that Anderson is facing in the UFC thusfar. In other words, you have no chance, so shut your trap and take your beating.

Of course Cote is confident, he’s a fighter, but going against Anderson, this is just fake confidence to try and subdue his fears.

I love Cote, but I wish Almeida would have won that fight because he had a very excellent chance to defeat Silva. Ill still throw money down on Cote if I get good odds like I did on Irvin. I’ll probably lose but I see Silva going down sooner or later.

by c-war on Jul 31, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i gotta disagree, the only thing Almeida has going for him is his BJJ which obviously wasn’t enough to do a damn thing to a guy like Cote who has no ground game and isn’t nearly as deadly with knee strikes.

This is how things work pal – champions are expected to protect their belts (standing) by accepting challenges and fighting those who have earned title shots within their weight class. Regardless of who you think will win – the fights have to take place.

Leben fought Silva two years ago (the first victim for Silva in the UFC) – and Cote had lost to Leben before this. Much has changed since for all fighters involved – so comparing and using this as fodder for your arguments is misleading. Cote’s not the same fighter who lost to Leben…

Who legitimately gave Forrest much of a chance to beat Rampage? Serra over GSP??? Even Rabdy versus Tim Sylvia?Crazy things happen in sport, especially a sport like mma. For those who don’t think this fight should happen – don’t watch it.

I’ll be rootin for Cote…

by WADZ on Jul 31, 2008 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that I dont think this fight should happen, i think its a little too early to start listening to Cote. He will fight at UFC 90. WE still have UFC 87, UFN, UFC 88, UFC 89.

So this is way to early to start listening to his crap! Especially since he has already been quoted for over a week now!

I second that… Leben has a better chin and look what happened to him… as Rogan said it best… “this is a different kind of striker” there are very few fighter’s that have pure ko power like Sliva… Chuck and AA come too my mind… anybody else have any others?

by Robert on Jul 31, 2008 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I got one , Patrick Cote. How does Leben have a better chin? Who’s been rocked lots and KOed and who HASN’T. Cote took one of Mcfredries hard shots and KOed him a second later. Name one time Cote has even been rocked. He has the best chin in MMA.

by Gord on Aug 3, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As odd as it sounds Cote’s best bet is to keep it standing as long as possible. As dangerous as Anderson is on his feet, the skills would be even more one-sided if it hit the mat. I like Cote’s ability to box and take a punch, I’d say KO by anderson early in the 3rd. Unless it hits the mat then i give Cote about 45 seconds from that point

He has an even better chance than Hendo, but it still ain’t happening.

by Luke on Jul 30, 2008 11:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think so. Hendo just got caught, but IMO Hendo has all the tools to beat Silva back then. He just got careless and therefore ended up in Spider’s web.

Well Travis Lutter almost had Silva too. The lazy mofo just didn’t hold on to Silva’s arm tight enough to execute the armbar[or whatever it was he was tryin’ to execute]. And the lazy-assed gasser also had him on the mount position. HE just let it all slip away! History would’ve been different if he had won that fight!

by TheNegation on Jul 31, 2008 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Hendo had the best chance, but he (unbelievably) was gassed and got worked into a submission.

by BobC on Jul 31, 2008 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Better chance than Hendo? Seriously? Are you on drugs? What in the world is your reasoning for this thought?

by chefdaddy on Jul 31, 2008 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’ll fight Silva in a tecnical manner, not like Hendo (rush in swinging blindly, like Leben) and he’ll stick to his strength (stand-up) not do the opposite like Hendo. Also Hendo and the rest of them, have ALL been KOed before. Cote hasn’t and he has taken bombs by harder punchers than Silva, (however the knees might be a different story). Franklin was easily holding his own in the boxing, but he got OWNED in the clinch. I think Cote could box with him all day long, the question is ,will he have an answer for Silva’s clinch? Would I bet the house on Cote? Hell No, but styles make fights and I just think Cote has a better chance than the ones who went before him.

by Gord on Aug 3, 2008 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hendo is the only person I see beating silva and I would personally put some dough down on him if they fight again as I think it was just a couple of mistakes that lead to that loss as he is definately capable.

by Ca$z on Jul 31, 2008 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why does he have a better chance than hendo..hendo hits like a mac truck and anderson silva ate his punch..and than put his hands up and signaled..“bring it on” anderson silva is jus the best figher….maybe ever..well see..it just sux that we have to waist 4 months of him in his prime..

by Xtreme Couture15 on Aug 1, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah. He said something the other day about Silva would have to hit him 10 times to finish him or something of that nature?? I’m calling Silva with the 1st round KO. Cote is tough, and I like him, but he’s not in the same league.

Leben WAS just a BLIND BRAWLER and a DUMMY with NO game plan and that was the same year he LOST 3 out of 4 fights. Leben has improved a ton and Cote has improved even more. Cote had a problem of being taken down and he didn’t have an answer. I think the Almeida fight proved things have changed and he can hang with the BEST of the ground guys, because Almeida is just about as good as they get and Cote was never in any real danger. Cote also has a better chin than Leben and he’s much better at protecting it. Comparing Leben (over 2 years ago) and Cote now is laughable.

by Gord on Jul 31, 2008 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what? Cote is still going to lose. Whats the point of your analysis and how does it pertain to Cote beating Silva?

by OJR on Jul 31, 2008 8:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gord: Almeida gassed/dropped his game plan rds 2 and 3 against Cote. The only way Cote doesn’t get KO’d by Silva in the first round..is if he is cleared to wear a Pro NFL football helmet in the octagon..other then that he will get dropped (90 seconds flat)..not get back up till Dave and his corner peel him off the canvas..The worse thing the Cote is that Silva is not even looking passed him.. Silva will have fight camp like always to prep for Cote.. Silva would murk Cote..even if he was called in to fight on a 2 hr notice. The fighter today that is comp for Silva..is Silva himself/ and Fedor.

by PhilQNY on Jul 31, 2008 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True dat, Phil.

by OJR on Jul 31, 2008 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OJR, my point is that I don’t think Cote will go down as fast as Leben. The point of my analysis DOESN’T pertain to Cote beating Silva, that is why I DIDN’T say Cote was going to beat Silva, just that he would do better than Leben. Seems like a lot of people still judge Cote by the way he was a few years ago. He was 0-4 now he is 5-0, something has changed. Maybe not enough to beat the likes of Silva, but I still think his style will do better than most (especially Leben). It’s not like he has to do much to do better, no one has done all that well against Silva, lol.

by Gord on Aug 3, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

PhilQNY, I know Almeida gassed, because he spent alot of energy trying to sub Cote ,to no avail. I don’t know if you noticed, but Cote does have a Pro NFL helmet for a head. I wish I could make some bets with all the guys that say Cote won’t last 90 seconds.I would bet big money that Cote lasts longer than 90 seconds.

by Gord on Aug 3, 2008 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he did good against ricardo cuz the guy duznt even throw punches..lol..hes a decent fighter..but u dont really have to worry about striking with him..silva is a beast with the striking game…and put one of the best bjj artists..travis lutter..in a triangle..hes just plain good

WHY?

by Gord on Jul 31, 2008 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because all of Silva’s would-be opponents are scared to get hurt so they take the steroids to kill the inevitable pain…You could just imagine one of the Spider’s knees to your chest…Ouch!

by TheNegation on Jul 31, 2008 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is pain really a factor in MMA fights? At that level I would think they fight through just about any kind of pain.

by Landowner on Jul 31, 2008 4:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Landowner, I’m sure they are far better conditioned to the pain of getting hit than us mere mortals, however, getting hit by one of the most feared strikers on the planet is gonna hurt! They just don’t curl up and cry when it happens. lol

by matt on Jul 31, 2008 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve been saying the same thing as Cote for almost a year. He does have the best style to go against Silva. He might come up short like the rest of them, but at least he didn’t lose the fight before it started like most of them. He’s not scared of Silva.

by Gord on Jul 30, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He may have the best style when standing up. But Silva is just too clever not to stand and bang if he thinks he’s bein’ taken advantage of in that category.

But so far, I don’t see anyonoe outstriking Silva. His movements are just simply out of this world. No one can take Silva’s strikes[w/c hit 85% of the time!]!

by TheNegation on Jul 31, 2008 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea best style … um to stand and strike with the best striker in the world… silva will eat him… the only chance he has 2 win is anderson gets his arms removed.

by Xtreme Couture15 on Jul 31, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not the arms Cote has to worry about, Silva hit hard, but he doesn’t have 1 punch KO power and Cote has a very hard head, so he can probably take a few, however he probably can’t take to many knees if he gets caught in the clinch. Or head kicks for that matter.

by Gord on Aug 3, 2008 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cote says he is confident that he’ll win, but every single person who fought Anderson was confident till they actually saw him on the other side of the cage.. look at dan henderson, he said he’s never even fought anyone with his strength in the clinch.. Chris leben said he’ll push forward till silva gives up…. lutter said he’ll put him on his butt and submite him.. and they all got ruined… cote is just going to go at him and get ruined. .

by ricky on Jul 31, 2008 12:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

now that he said that Silva will come out tryin to finish him even harder……. Irvin talked shit that he could beat him and he wouldn’t let Silva beat anyone in the light heavyweight division, then Silva KOed him in a minute……. Cote has confidence, but that confidence will be shaken when he’s standin toe to toe with Silva and gets popped in the chin like Franklin did

I guess people dont tend to look at things like :

REACH
WEIGHT
HEIGHT
SKILLS
SPEED
HEAD MOVEMENT
FOOT WORK
COUNTER TIMING

Because to my knowledge, Silva is much better in all the catagories listed above..

Not to mention that, like posted above, Silva is far superior on the ground (which is Cote’s ultimate weakness) and at any point in the fight he so chooses he could take Cote down and finish him within a minute. Silva is VERY STRONG. He hides it well in his long frame, but he will finish Cote by the second round.. Cote will eat something coming in and get finished via TKO when he hits the ground..

There is a zero chance that Cote will win. Unless Silva goes in there blindfolded or he takes this fight lightly and uses 10% of his ability, the result will be the same as all of his fights. Why is Cote thinking that because he’s not scared of him that he’s going to have a better chance than the others. Henderson wasn’t afraid of him and he still lost, other than Irvin everyone went in there thinking they could win. Just like Cote and others have improved in the last couple of years so has Anderson, if Cote makes an early mistake, the figths done in 30 seconds, if he’s able to stay away from Silva for a few exchanges and not get hurt to bad, it might make it to the second round. Maybe.

I just don’t see it in this lifetime.. He is on the path of retiring as the UFC MW Champ. He may not lose for like 3 more years. If not considered already.. will be the greatest UFC Champ EVER!

A few years ago AA was disposing of everyone in the first round (one lasted early second round). He beat 2 guys in a minute combind. Everyone (including me) thought he was unbeatable and then what happened, he LOST 2 in a row. Everyone is beatable.

As long as you’re willing to admit the following day that you picked the guy that KTFO 90 seconds into the 1st Round!

Ca$z: Are you reffering to Cote or Silva?

Phil, I’m going to NY in a couple months. I’m lookig at subletting an apartment. Any advice on how to verify it’s not a scam, i.e., they take the deposit or credit card number and I show up and they don’t even own the place.

Don’t do it.. wait till you get out here. If you can..chk out cRaig’s list… unless it’s an legitamte agency with a website all that..or paying thru pay pal.. no one should take your credit card #.

Thanks. I should have mentioned that I’m only vacationing. My wife’s checking out Craig’s list and some of the websites people have seem fake. I guess Paypal would be a safe way to do it. Thanks again.

In comparison to Cote, Silva is a God. In any aspect of fighting was does Cote have the edge on? I can’t think of any, so if you like to bet for the underdog this fight is great. If you like to see two evenly matched fighters go at it, this will be garbage.

by MXN on Jul 31, 2008 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The STAREDOWN, Cote might barely win the staredown… barely… I’m giving the staredown technique to the canadian, A. Silva wins in all other aspects..

Silva’s Stare down is “The calm before the storm”.. chk out UFN again.. you’ll see what I’m talking about.

i can see cote landing one or two shots in a small exchange in the very begining. then the inebitible will happen. silve will throw a perfectley timed punch and put him away. it will happen somewhere around mmm…2:47 of the first round

I’d love to know the betting odds for this fight. I gotta think if Cote is able to somehow pull off the win it would be considered one of the greatest upsets in mma history, not bigger than serra vs gsp but i would think its definately up there though.

by bobby o'shea on Jul 31, 2008 11:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is a stupid fight for Anderson, his handlers don’t have much of business savy if Cote is the best opponent they can find for the Spider. I think Silva is more interested in making easy money as opposed to honest money, Silva just wants to put together a highlight clip instead of fighting someone worthy. Put someone who is at least a top 10, Henderson Marquardt or Okami. Anyone who dosen’t agree is not a real MMA fan. You want to see the best fight, don’t you?

by holmz on Jul 31, 2008 3:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he’s already beaten henderson and marquardt. u cant give dan a rematch right away, marquardt just lost his last fight even though i think he won but he still lost. okami was next in line but he got hurt. who else is there?? this is why they should have resigned matt lindland.

Sorry, but Hendo and Nate already blew their chance (they have to work their way back up. It’s Cote’s chance to blow it, I mean fight him.LOL

Okay, I am new here, but I will say this. 1. Cote is a good fighter, but Silva is a GREAT fighter and GREAT in ring Tactician. Unless Vanderlei has an injury, cote better eat his wheaties and bring his A+++ game. PS I will be in the crowd.

2. Brock lesnar knows where his mistakes lie from fighting Mir. he is NOT Kimbo Slice and is 100% a better fighter than KImbo will EVER BE. Herring has a skill and UFC experience to win, but Brock doe snot fear anyone and will stand toe to toe or ground it. If herring stands toe to toe he has a good shot, but he will do something dumb like try and outwrestle Lesnar and then ger his face smashed in.

3. Chuck Liddell NEEDS to beat Rashad Evans. Chuck’s fight against A. Silva was a fluke and we all know it. Lets see those too rematch NOW-100% different outcome. Evans needs to outwrestle the Iceman to win. Toe to toe he is getting knocked out…unless his punching power has gotten better.

by hardcoremisfit73 on Jul 31, 2008 4:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

btw chuck never fought anderson if u ment Wanderlei the only fluke was chuck not KOing him only reason he lasted was cuz he was held up from the cage

by Xtreme Couture15 on Jul 31, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you watch the same fight i did chuck put a beating on wandi, and the comment about Rashad needs to out wrestle liddell dont see that happening.Randy did in the first fight since then nope,Chuck still has the best take down defense in mma,Rashad has again a punchers chance but thats about it. ps i don’t think you can call a three round stand up fight a fluke bolth fighters agreed with the judges

I meant Anderson, not Vanderlei

i can’t believe you guys are bashing this guy….I’d like to see you have the balls to get in the ring with one of the best fighters in the world, all you guys who bash fighter’s because of what YOU THINK there skill set is are nothin but hoe’s and tricks…Jump in the ring with me and i’ll show you what hell is

What will be the bigger upset, Cote over Silva or Arlovski or Fedor? I’d love to see both of them pull it off as both are two of my fav. fighters. I think either one of them could pull it off because they both have knockout power but chances are slim as both are def. over skilled but heck Serra knocked out Gsp so it wouldn’t surprise me to see either of them win. I’m curious to know which one people think would be the bigger upset. I think Cote would be only cause i don’t seem as highly rated as Arlovski. What’s your guys thoughts?

by mmanutz. on Jul 31, 2008 4:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Cote would be a MUCH bigger upset. AA is going to give Fedor hell, win or lose.

by Gord on Aug 3, 2008 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

One thing ive noticed about Silva, he always has problems agenst people he should completly dispose of in seconds, (just a few examples lutter and Takase) i could see Cote upsetting the champ, expecally if he really isnt scared, Silva dont like being presured, i think Cote has a good game plan, assuming hes going to bob and weave. Cote needs to get silva agenst the cage and work big shots like Rivera did Groove,

by jsoph on Jul 31, 2008 6:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If cote swings for the fences and doesnt waste time doing kicks he will have the same chance irvin did.

As soon as okami gets better enough to get ko’ed, hendo gets past palhares to turn into franklin, and Bisping(assuming he gets by leben) gets ko’ed, Silva should give up the 185 strap and pursue 205 not this switching between crap.

by Colin D on Jul 31, 2008 6:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Silva has been in trouble for a combined 45 seconds in all his fights in the UFC. the most trouble is when that bag of wind Lutter mounted him. From what I’ve seen from Cote his only strength is when he has the chance to stand and slug, and what nut would stand there and trade strikes with Silva. I’m not bashing Cote, I think it just makes more sense to set up more evenly matched fighters. I’d put Cote at the bottom of the list of oppenents that Silva has faced so far in the UFC.
What a waste, this may be his last fight for 08.

by MXN on Jul 31, 2008 9:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to see silva -Hendo 2 But again and i know it’s getting old Silva vs wandi at 205 that would be a awsome fight!
Not saying wandi would beat him just think it would be very very exciting

by DBG on Jul 31, 2008 9:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think if theres rummors of the Russian Reaper coming to town….then why not give all MMA fighters their wet dream and have Silva vs.Fedor???? That would NO DOUBT be the Fight of the Centry!!!!
