Keith Jardine next fight against Brandon Vera at UFC 89

Kicking machines Brandon Vera (9-2) and Keith Jardine (13-4-1) will likely collide in a light heavyweight bout at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 25, according to CagePotato.com.
It's a 205-pound match up that pits two of the hardest-hitting strikers in the division up against one another.
Vera was victorious in his light heavyweight debut just this past weekend, defeating Reese Andy via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin. "The Truth" picked up a cool $200,000 for the win and snapped a two-fight losing skid that included defeats at the hands of Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum, respectively.
Jardine, on the other hand, is out to rebound from a crushing knockout loss to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 84: "Ill Will" back in May. With a win he would have solidified his place a top the short list of division contenders because the "Dean of Mean" also has recent wins over Chuck Liddell and Forrest.
However, he'll have to work his way back up the ladder -- consistency is critical in such a stacked division. And Jardine has lost three of his last six fights.
This is a big fight for Vera and Jardine for different reasons. And we'll get to see it all play out for free on Spike TV in just a few months.

YEAH!!! If Vera doesn’t win this fight in convincing and exciting fashion I’m going to be very disappointed.

From the way Vera fought last weekend, I say Jardine takes this fight. This will be a very nice kickboxing match.

I hope we finally get to see Vera connect with one of those high kicks. I think he can take someone’s head off if he ever connects. If Jardine throws another lazy leg kick, I think Vera will make him pay as well. IF Vera doesn’t win this in a convincing manner, I bet he’s done in the UFC.

Vera knocked out Justin Eilers w/ a high kick at UFC 57.

Enough with all this Vera bashing, last I checked he wopn his fight this past Saturday and thats what counts, especially coming off of 2 losses.
I expect to see him fight a more exciting fight against Jardine simply because the match up perfect stylistically…DFont know who will win or loose, I would bet Vera, if he can get the weight cut a little smoother!

loose=your mom… lose=a loss. thats the most rude way to point out a spelling error.

Remember how lackluster Swick was in his first fight cutting to 170? He was much more convincing in his second fight. Don’t you think the same could happen with Vera once he learns to cut weight properly?
by Joe Smith on Jul 23, 2008 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
according to Vera’s blog he hadn’t cut weight in 9 YEARS.
he’ll get better. i like his chances in this fight.

Welp, so much for those rumors that Wanderlei may have retired Jardine.
Good job Joe Silva. This is a great matchup. Two strikers that once fought at HW but now fight at LHW. Sometimes I root for Jardine, other times I root against him, depending fo course, on who he is fighting. I have rooted for Brandon Vera in just about all of his fights because he has yet to fight someone that I really like. So, with that said, in this fight I think I just may be rooting for Jardine. Not only has Brandon lost 2 of his last 3 fights, but Vera has also put me to sleep with 2 of his last 3 performances and I don’t want to hear his excuses. A fight is still a fight. Fight through it. He isn’t the only person to break a bone in a fight, but he is one of the few to be such a p*ssy about it!
I can imagine that the betting odds for the fight will be very close. After Vera’s last performance I can see Jardine opening as a SLIGHT favorite, like -115 to -105.

Sorry for the highjacking but Fedor himself said that he is fighting Arlovski in Oct/Nov and will be competing in Dream’s NYE event.

thats F’in awesome! VM, Phil….Arlovski vs. Fedor may sound better than Fedor vs. Couture! See you there!
Vera vs. Jardine is a great match up! Can UFC 89 get any better? I wont be surprised if this fightgets moved to UFC 90
by john on Jul 23, 2008 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ll still take Fedor. Maybe second round if not the first. And that’s no disrespect to arlovski, I just don’t see ANYONE beating Fedor. But I d@mn well won’t miss this one.
by chefdaddy on Jul 24, 2008 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can see the reasoning behind this decision.
We all know that Randy most likely wont be ready to fight come November..Legal matters take a long time and this one probably wont be a quick one..
So, with Fedor’s management saying that he will defintiely be fighting on the Nov card, it only leaves two possible opponent…Barnett or Arlovski.
With Affliction “most likely?” having Tim Sylvia back on the next card, they could not have Barnett fight Fedor and promote AA/Tim 4.
The Barnett/Fedor sounds great, but AA/Tim 4..i dont like.
So it was obvious AA would get the next crack at Fedor.
So IMO, we will see Fedor/Arlovski(main event) and
Barnett/Tim(one I have wanted to see for a while)
by Stagger-Lee on Jul 23, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
stager lee: what would happen if Randy said, screw the courts and just went to fight Fedor in Japan for DREAM?
This is a terrible idea for Andre! DO NOT ACCEPT this match up Andre! He just turned back into9 the pitbull of old, he should ride that streak against opponents that he has a chgance against….Fedor will turn him back into a gunshy puppy!

Because I hate to see Fedor beat the crap out of Arlovski, I would like to see:
Barnett vs. Fedor
Aeks vs. Arlovski (2 big boys)

if vera comes in great form it might be a good fight for him, if he shows up like his last fight jardine might have his way with him, reese gave vera no danger from his striking but jardine will.

this card just gets better and better!
i say vera splits jardines jaw agian.
this is veras last chance at 205.
even if he wins?
if he cant finish?
he should move back up to hw.

i will definitely lay cash on vera.
it will have to be offical for my book keep to start taking bets.
but like i said-
last chance for vera.
if he still cant handle the weight cut. he needs to go back to hw.
by ~stinky~fingers~ on Jul 23, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vera looked like crap I think the weight cutting hurt his performance and with Jardine all you have to do is explode on him in the first round and he will curl up in a ball or get knocked out.

This has all the makings of a very boring fight. They both like to counter strike.I could be wrong though,we’ll see.
by Jack on Jul 23, 2008 2:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree. Vera should have gone out and dominated in his LHW debut, but instead he was waiting for a shorter wrestler to come at him so he could counter, and when Reese did the shot Vera landed weren’t there. He landed them, but there wasn’t anything behind them. I really do think the cutting took its toll on him, hopefully he’ll be able to handle it better this time.
by Big Jake on Jul 23, 2008 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
IMO Vera doesn’t “like” to counter-strike. He turns to a counter-striker when he tires.
by Pat on Jul 23, 2008 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. He’s usually agressive. I want to see a fight from Vera with no excuses though. He has plenty of time to cut this time. No more rice Vera!!!
by Shadyone33 on Jul 23, 2008 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He had to counter strike vs. Reese or he would have spent the whole fight on his back. Counter striking is the best way for a striker to aviod being taken down. If vera would have went in attack mode, it would have been very easy for Reese to take him down!
by john on Jul 23, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Vera needs a great showing. 2 losses and a weak ass decision! He is one of my favorites, but his cocky attitude is getting old. He complained after 2 losses (he was mounted easily) and still didn’t want to cut to 205. This excuse about cutting is lame too, he’s not a big HW, and he’s a professional athlete! I could cut to 185 (from 205+-) in 6 weeks…especially for 200,000!
by kevin on Jul 23, 2008 2:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well when you really look at Vera he shouldnt have to cut much weight at all. If he wasnt such as lazy ass and was in shape all the time he would be close to 205 and the cut wouldnt bother him much.
by NorthStar on Jul 23, 2008 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
good point… I cant see Jardine losing this fight as long as he listens to his corner and does what he did against chuck and forrest
by brendan on Jul 23, 2008 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he cut like 24lbs in about 5 weeks. that’s a LOT and is not ideal.

Vera needs to be more aggressive. I’m a fan of his, but his last 3 performances have me wondering.
by Josh on Jul 23, 2008 2:10 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
After he blew through 4 HW’s….vera was instantly one of my fav fighters. But lately he has looked like dog shit. What ever happened to the “old” Vera. I mean Sylvia, Werdum, Reese…..His performances keep going downhill. i hope he turns it around with a highlight reel KO!!!!
by fightfan on Jul 23, 2008 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You do realize he won his last fight, right. He spoiled us in the beginning of his UFC career. All his fights will not be highlight reel KO’s, but Jardine sure likes to be on the recieving end of them. I predict Vera will be back to his old form that got him so many fans to begin with, myself included.

vera got tired from bigger Andy and bigger Tim pressing him up against the cage. it really gets you tired. if you think you’re in shape, go fight a fat guy that will do that to you. all your energy will be drained. stylisticly, these guys are both strikers therefore i’ll give it to the more fluid, longer range, more explosive vera. easily as long as he finds angles and avoids jardine’s bomb straight.

by DirtyML on Jul 23, 2008 2:25 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There are many ways a fight can go, but these are the three most likely scenarios IMO:
- Vera is tentative, and Jardine out-points him in a boring decision
- Vera comes out firing, and knocks Jardine out in the first round
- Vera comes out firing, Jardine survives round 1, and grounds and pounds a gassed Vera in round 2

by O damn he got caught on Jul 23, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nothing official, but I’ve read that the UFC wants him fighting as early as October, while Wand wants to fight as late as December. They should compromise and have Wand fight in November! I’d like to see him against Goran Reljic or Luis Cane. I’d also like to see Shogun-Soko, but if Sho is still out for a while, then Wandy-Soko would be great too.

Or Rich Franklin vs Wanderlei, I’m pretty sure Franklin will beat Hamil as his track record against grapplers is really good, but against Wanderlei I think he’s in trouble. Either way that would be a fight to see.

by chris on Jul 23, 2008 3:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Anything can happen, of course, but I see Jardine putting a big hurt on Vera. While you never know which Jardine is going to show up for a fight, Vera has been a consistent underacheiver. Now that I think about it, this might not even be a good fight. :(
by TheBigRedOne on Jul 23, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Jardine is ten times the fighter Vera is.
by LanceLegweak on Jul 23, 2008 3:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
well you might find it interesting to note though that out of 13 wins Jardine has only finished 6 fights, and out of 9 wins Vera has finished 7. Typically Vera finish’s guys, I wouldn’t judge his potential at 205 by that last performace. The Vera we’ve been seeing lately hopefully won’t be the same Vera that steps into the cage with Jardine but I’d have to say if the aggressive healthy Truth shows up that night chance’s are Jardine is going to get ko’d/tko’d/ktfo. Either way this is still a good fight and makes this card start to look really good.
