UFC Quick Quote: Matt Hughes injury could keep him out seven more months

"Went to the doctor yesterday, he performed quite a few tests on my knee. With the results of the tests on my knee and from what I have told him, he definitely thinks the MCL and the PCL is rebuilding itself. The next time I go back up there, in a month to a month and a half, I will get an MRI and that way he can get a picture of the knee and he can see better what’s going on. So right now, I’m going to work out lightly, try and build up my quadricep as much as I can. Do nothing with the hamstring really, from what he said and he says possibly being able to fight in 6-7 months."
-- Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes provides an update via his official blog on the knee injury he sustained in his technical knockout loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85: "Bedlam" last month. He elected to pass on surgery and let the injury heal on its own, which could keep him out until early 2009. There's no telling if his likely next opponent, Matt Serra, intends to wait that long to return.

No chance of that happening, lets hope hughes doesnt retire. Serra isnt the one coming off of being dominated in his last two fights and destroyed like hughes was. WAR SERRA!!!

who cares about this fight? I mean really? who cares about Matt hUghes? HE IS DONE!!! His days of dominating as a 1 dimensional ground fighters are OVER!!! I could care less if I ever see this fight, if I do, I hope Serra Donkey Punches this Donkey!
I would rather see Serra vs. Marcus Davis or something like that….maybe even Diego vs. Serra after Diego gets destoyed by Alves

Not me. I still want to see Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra. Matt Hughes is the most dominant WW champion in history. Yeah he lost 3 of his last 4, but 2 of them were to GSP and the other was to someone that outwieghed him by 20 lbs.
Hughes is close be being done, but not yet. At the very least, he MUST fight Matt Serra.
I didn’t expect to see you not showing respect to the greatest WW of all time.

VM: Nah..I can’t consider him the greatest welter weight of all time.. when he dominated a lack luster WW division.. where had strengh and a high caliber wrestling taht translated well into MMA. I give him props.. not many men did..or can do what he did..but I’m not sold on the tag " Greatest WW ever ".. from how he started his rain to today. His persona doesn’t help him either.. I would enjoy seeing Hughes vs Serra.. then very few match ups after that can interest me. Since the birth of weight divisions and the up to date rules.. I’ll give it more time to tag greatest BW, FW, LW, WW, MW-Silva, LHW, HH-Fedor Champ ever.

Ok, let me re-phrase. I meant to say that he is the “most dominant WW champion of all time”.
If GSP can defend the belt once or perhaps 5 times, then he will be known as the greatest WW of all time unitl the next guy comes around.
Nobody has ever been more dominant in the WW division, anywhere, in any organization, than Matt Hughes. That fact can’t be argued.
Today, there are MANY WW fighters that would beat him in the UFC. But there are also a lot of people that he can still dominate by using his wrestling followed up with his GnP and submission game.
by ViolentMike on Jul 22, 2008 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
PhilQNY: It’s just simple math. Matt Hughes is the most dominant WW champion of all time. He is a 9 time WW champion. Nobody has even came close to doing that yet. Until GSP or BJ or whoever does that, then Hughes is the most dominant WW champion of all time.

I like Hughes, but let’s tell it like it is, he dominated before the sport got big and everyone evolved.
GSP has a better who’s who list at welterweight already.

definately agreed. hughes is done, I really don’t care what he did in the past, as far as im concerned he was always a one dimensional fighter who never evolved with the sport. Personally I don’t think he was ever that great a fighter but im sure many will disagree with that. Serra still has some time in this sport as he hasn’t had a ton of fights and there are some interesting matchups he can have. If he does stay in the ufc, I think he’ll defiantely be used as a stepping stone for up and coming fighters. Problem is most of serra fites go to decision and the ufc hates that. time will tell

Do you people remember Matt Hughes always stepping up for the UFC? Especially in today’s world where fighters turn down fights left and right. Matt does not turn down fights.
He did not need to fight GSP in December. He could have, and should have, waited a couple of months for Serra to heal and he would have had his fight with Serra, and the belt one last time. But instead, he choses to fight the best fighter in the division, knowing that GSP has his number and that he is a big underdog.
Then there were injuries left and right for the last UFC event in England that was supposed to be Liddell/Shogun. Who steps up to fight in the main event with nothing to gain??? Matt Hughes. Thiago comes in SUPER heavy for the fight. Hughes could have, and should have, refused to fight Thiago at that weight. But he didn’t.
Give the man the respect he deserves.
With that said, sure he can be a d*ck but he did and still does a LOT for the UFC.

I will not disagree with what you said above..
by PhilQNY on Jul 22, 2008 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree ViolentMike, I think that Hughes is good for the sport regardless of what some will say. Some say he has a bad attitude, but I think his attitude is right for a fighter. He’s confident and doesn’t see himself losing.
Hughes has always stepped up for the UFC when needed because you’re right about both fights…Really he had to have a good suspicion that he wasn’t going to win the GSP fight, with the Alves fight he should have turned it down but didn’t.
Didn’t Joe Riggs miss weight against him for a title shot too? Isn’t that when Hughes felt disrespected?

Much respect for everything Hughes has accomplished, but I flat out dont like the guy. I hate his fighting style as I hate all 1 dimensional ground fighters, and I hate Matt Hughes the Fake Christian even more!
Only Matt HUghes fighst I like, are when he is getting KTFO!!!
Right now, he has to be considered the most dominant welterweight in the history of the sport, butl ike u said, iF GSP can defend his title like 5 times which he is more than capable of doing IMO, then he will surpass Hughes as the best ofr all time!
Of course I acknowledge the accomplishments of HUghes, I am just Biased against him (at least I admit it right)

Just so you know, for the GSP fight, one of the main reasons Hughes wanted the GSP fight (after Serra was injured) was that he knew the fight would be in the US as opposed to Canada. Also, Hughes agreed to fight Alves even though he was over-weight b/c through negotiation Alves had give up some $. Hughes was a great fighter, but his holier than thou bullshit is annoying.

TC – Its a rule that when you miss wieght that you give a percentage of your purse to your opponent. It happens in the UFC, EliteXC and even on BET’s Iron Ring. That is just normal practice.

You’re right except the parties negotiate the %s.

after this fight i would prefer to see seraa drop back to 155, i think he could have a couple of good fights there before he is done, at 170 probally one m ore loss and they will let him go.

He just lost the belt. Why would he be gone arleady?
by ViolentMike on Jul 22, 2008 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There’s been a handful of fighters who’ve lost the title and found themselves out of the UFC soon after. That said, Serra is still a solid fighter and is marketable, so the UFC will keep him around.

I for one still want to see this fight happen. I can’t stand Sera and I hope Hughes is able to put together one more great fight so he can retire the right way. As for Diego and Alves, I don’t see Diego getting destroyed at all in this fight. This is a fight that he may not get the win because Alves is going to be much bigger, but I see Diego bringing it and this being a war. Alves better have his cardio that night, otherwise diego will go home with the win.

Yo John: Wht gets under my skin about Hughes.. during the whole Royce vs Hughes time.. Hughes kept saying that..now the MMA sport has evolved..and that just on jits only will not cut..which he is right.. but he was saying..Royce is so 1 dimenisonal..blah blah.. and not too long after that ..the same is being said about him.

I dont understand why people call Hughes one dimensional. He might not be a good striker, but there is more than “one dimension” to the ground game. Hes got great wrestling and great jits. Dont get me wrong every time I hear this guy talk I think he sounds like a tool but I have respect for him as a fighter.

I hope Hughes comes back and lays a beating to Serra.
Sidenote: Serra would get DESTROYED by Marcus Davis in my opinion.

Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra is the only fight I care to see either of them in. Is there really any interest in seeing either guy continue their career after they fight? That would be a fitting end to both guys careers, they can kill each other, kiss and make up, then make room for the young blood.
by BNF on Jul 22, 2008 11:44 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Got to love a genuine grudge match like this though. Both guys proud bordering on pompus, both would be very embarassed by losing to the other. Plus, no chance of this being a headline event after Hugues just losing, so this will make a great second or third fight from the top of the bill.

Sad news. Hopefully that doesn’t result in Matt ending his MMA career altogether.

Thanks John. Did’nt know you and JC were that close. Next time I’m interested in knowing the true level of someones personal relationship with God, I’ll be sure to ask you.
As far as the Serra/Hughes fight goes, sure it may be Hughes last outting, but I would still love to see it, and venture to say most fans would as well.

I hope he doesnt use this as an excuse-why would the doc wait to do an mri? This is his version of faking a kick in the stones or poke in the eye.
He was a dominant WW because he dominated weaker talent-bj penn decided top train for their first fight and won other than GSP who did he really beat? Hope Serra smacks him around before sending him broken back to bible study
