UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva on the Birmingham battle

machida silva

"I know that this fight will show who is going to lose. The event will sell it this way, two unbeaten guys. I wanna do a great fight, a great show."

-- Lyoto Machida via Tatame.com

"It’ll be a good fight, we’re determined fighters. I trained a lot and I’ll do my job. I believe it’ll be a fight with more strategy. Lyoto likes to escape, fight moving backwards, it’s his style, but it’ll do my job.... I can’t say that I like (facing Brazilian fighters), but I want the belt, and wanna prove my talent and win. I want the belt. I already can fight for the belt. I’ve already showed UFC what I can and what I can’t do. I’m here to fight for the belt."

-- Thiago Silva via Tatame.com

Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva comment for the first time on their huge 205-pound showdown at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 18. The winner of the bout will likely earn a title shot in early 2009.

Man I hope this one is a battle. Two guys who can both stand and bang or take it to the ground and put on a submission school!

off topic, but my friday conversation is in the sanchez/alves thread…enjoy!

by kevin on Jul 18, 2008 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah!2 different fighters of entirely different schools!Elusive vs Aggressive.Whatever the f*ck you wanna call it. This is gonna be 1 helluva match up! I was dreamin’ about this fight for the longest time, and here it is!!

Only 2 possible outcomes IMO…Either Machida with the decision, or Thiago with the vicious GNP. Question is, will MAchida ever be in that position[the defensive one] in the 1st place? The Dragon is just a tad bit too elusive to get caught up. This fight is up for grabs! I’m rootin’ for Thiago though, hehe!!

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is going to be a great fight. I can’t wait for this one. Both of these guys have so much on the line with this.

C’mon Silva, I know you say you would rather not fight brazilian dudes b/c of your background and all but bro, that would take away like 50% of fighters. Brazilian dudes kick ass in MMA, props on stepping up and fighting anyway.

Onwards to the title shot for the one who wants it most.

by tripleainto on Jul 18, 2008 12:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This will be a great war. I think Silva will win. Not sure if it will be by submission or knockout, but I don’t see it going a decision.

by Griffinfan05 on Jul 18, 2008 1:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I still see machida winning this one, idk, I just have a feeling he’ll come out victoriuos!

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually see Machida finishing him in the late first or early second. I will put quite a bit on Machida.

by c-war on Jul 18, 2008 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How on earth do you see Machida finishing it that early? Submission would be the only way. Certainly not Knockout. I see Machida winning it by unanimous decision.

by dave on Jul 18, 2008 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No way will this fight end in the early goin’. One of ‘em is gonna make a mistake in the end then Boom!!! We really wouldn’t know the outcome. This is MMA folks. But what the heck, Thiago via TKO or whatever. Machida wouldn’t be too stupid to get caught up in a submission!

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ummm did you see Silva’s last fight against Mendes? He almost got K0ed. Silva isn’t very dominant at all unless he gets you on the ground. Machida is way to evasive to let Silva take him down. Machida wins by TKO because Silva leans in too much and eats a big one.

by c-war on Jul 18, 2008 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats exactally what I have, but I can still see this one going to the score cards in Machida’s favor as well.

by DB on Jul 18, 2008 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This may be a sleeper..for fight of the year. You heard here first.

Both a just Warriors!! I can not root against either one.

I feel Lyoto’s time is now. He deservesathe title shot more between the 2. Thiago is real young warrior.. He’ll soon be Champ.

The best fights are always the ones that are too close to call. This fight is the reason I love MMA.

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This fight is a fans DREAM, top of the line fighters with perfect styles to make it a possible fight of the year (Good call Phil)! I totaly agree Phil, Machida’s time is now, Silva is so young that him holding the title in the future is inevitable.

I think this fight will be amazing and I think they will go to war on standing up and show off a beautifull tactical display of jits, because I think the fight will goo to the ground at some point!

This match up will display the chess match that is mma! YOu are going to get a little something of everything when these 2 GET IT ON!!!!

Cant wait for this one!

Dana propably trade this fight over Diego vs Alves. but still gonna be a good fight anyway, no prob.

by Ro on Jul 18, 2008 1:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Before someone like john hijacks this thread I am going to say that I think Silva will pull the upset and get the win.

Machida does look very good and could be amazing, but I think against real aggressive fighters he will struggle. Not aggressive in that they will stand and trade shot for shot. But aggressive in the Wanderlei Silva and Thiago Silva meaning, just raw anger.

I reckon Silva could get the GnP TKO after kncoking Machida to the floor.

Machida could always get the KO or decision as well, caching Silva as Silva charges in.

by Adam on Jul 18, 2008 1:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i like it when he hijacks your post to be at the top of the page and dosn’t even comment on what you wrote just uses it to post his “breaking news”, he should send it to mmamania and if they want to post it fine but don’t take over the thread and some ones comments.

by bill on Jul 18, 2008 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds that to be an extremely annoying habit. Thiago looks like he has the potential to be a beast, and I would love to see him pound out Machida, but that’s probably just wishful thinking.

by Scott on Jul 18, 2008 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

once again I disagree. you guys have been all over me and john lately for breaking news stories before even mania. don’t hate, appreciate and participate but instead all you guys do is regurgitate…the same stuff every day!

by kevin on Jul 18, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

kevin no one mentioned you here but of course you have to jump in to get your name up there, you post more nonsense than anyone i have seen and if you have breaking news send it to mmamania and let them post it and if they don’t there is probally a reason or go start your own blog its not hard.

by bill on Jul 18, 2008 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am sure you didnt mind me hijacking the thread when I let you all know that this fight was taking place a week before it was announced though!

U dont like it, ignore it, there is no limit to a thread. If you havent noticed you can keep posting something forever. If you have something good to say, whatever I type wont matter because someone will reply to yours anyway! Get over it!

by john on Jul 18, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats fine post it up just don’t use peoples comments for it that your not responding too.

by bill on Jul 18, 2008 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Such a good match-up. Thiago is the type of fighter that can take it to Machida and TKO him. He will just have to be willing to take a couple moving in to land a big shot or 2. On the groud they should be very equal, so I see most of this fight taking place on the feet. If he comes with the correct game plan and executes it, I see Thiago winning by TKO.

by BNF on Jul 18, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

machida by decision… thiago isn’t gonna catch him… he looked so rusty in his last fight getting knocked down so easily… i think machida is too much of a technician for him… if soko couldnt out-hustle and rush machida… despite clinching and judo throwing him… i don’t see thiago doing it… having said that… thiago is an animal too… i’m going with machida though.

by haemophiliac on Jul 18, 2008 1:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s what you think haemophiliac[or whatever that means]. But don’t be so sure. ‘coz you wouldn’t know what Thiago has in store. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Machida’s arsenal[though I still think he has some other tricks in his bag]but I’m also confident that Thiago has the weapons to take this dude to school…

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I second that The Negation.

I can see it now, Silva going up to the camera in victory with his bad ass look taking his thumb across his throat. Got to love that. Thats exactly whats going to happen.

Sorry to the Machida fans, my boy Thiago has this is in the bag.

by Automation on Jul 18, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if silva stays aggressive while fighting smart he could easily pull off a W, should be a good fight either way

by fighter879 on Jul 18, 2008 1:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i dont get why all these Brazilians says they dont like fighting each other. Cmon man that dude is in the way of you getting the belt, something every fighter should want. What ever happened to the good old days where BTT and Chute were at each others throats. If everyone didn’t want to fight someone from their own country we might as well have TEAM USA, Canada, Japan, Korea, Brazil, etc. I love seeing brazilians fight each other because usually they have agressive styles so this nonsense about not wanting to fight other Brazilians is bullshit.

by Eric on Jul 18, 2008 1:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Take it for what it’s worth, but Brazilian athletes don’t mind fighting each other. When Brazilian fighters talk to Brazilian media (ie tatame.com.br), they will give other Brazilians more props because of Brazilian fans. We Brazilians want to see another Brazilian succeed in a international organization such as UFC (or the late Pride), it gives us pride and it’s something these athletes will communicate with us one way or another (as if they don’t get a belt they hope another Brazilian will). It’s just national pride, but it doesn’t mean they won’t fight each other, they’re just saying because of the Brazilian fans. but bottom line it’s just talk, they will fight each other as they are doing here with Machida vs Thiago.

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This will be a great fight. I think Silva wil prove to be stronger than Machida and win via TKO, that is if Machida doesnt throw a Starnes and run fron Silvas takedown attempts. On a side note, I just watched the Alexander/Silva fight again, and I have to say how inconsistant Dan ‘The Douche’ Miragliotta is. In that fight he waited until Alexander was out cold with his arms sticking up to stop it. Thompson (against Kimbo) was still standing and Miraglitto called it and Vera (against Werdum) was still defending himself saying he was ok, but yet the douche bag stopped the fight. Either Miragliotta wasn’t that concerned with Alexanders safety ( like he said he was in the Vera and Slice fights), or he is just a bad, inconsitant ref and full of shit. You be the judge.

by the_mexicutioner on Jul 18, 2008 1:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Thiago has a chance in this fight. I am a huge fan of both of these guys but just based on their past fights, there is no way Thiago wins this one. Machida is way too technical on the feet for Thiago. Sure Thiago is tough as hell and can brawl/packs some power in his punch, but he will have no answer for Machida’s speed and accuracy.

Controlling Machida on the ground? Please. The guys Thiago mounted and pounded out were amateurs on the ground compared to Machida, who is a BJJ black belt himself. The way he swept Sokoudjo after getting taken down shows he is not the type of fighter to let himself be controlled on the ground.

by Ballam on Jul 18, 2008 1:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yup, couldn’t agree more. But in any case…….Thiago Silva via GNP!!!

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

silva is good, but like his last fight he will get caught.. only this time Machida will finish him.. silva’s chin may be suspect, other than that i love his attitude and style.. machida’s style is awesome i see there giving him a personality to market. i dont know if he talks the way he does in the promos he was last in, but he sounded straight out of a samaurai movie. dig it. i’d love for either of these guys to win the title.. i want to see new blood holding the belt.

by it.dont.stop on Jul 18, 2008 1:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hear you dude. He seems totally centered and focused. The true warrior. He excludes himself from being puffed up. He has a humble life with wife and kid. He’s strong from the spirit and the body (most fighters are only focused on the body). When he tossed Tito away was a good example of his centered strength. You could see it coming from deep within. Same with the way he controls on the ground. He’s always outweighed and yet he’s difficult to sweep (Soku and Tito). I’ve always thought that someone who meditates and does tai Chi as a major part of training would dominate in the UFC. Good comment.

by GoColts on Jul 18, 2008 1:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

they don’t mind facing each other… it’s just politics that they’d say that, read my previous post where I try to explain…

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Politics and possibly a little bit of bad translation.

by James S on Jul 18, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the translation is accurate time, we’re really patriotic and the Brazilian athletes do say this stuff often.

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I do read every so often about Brazilians refusing to help Americans train for fights against other Brazilians. There’s a brotherhood that sort of exists. I don’t think they’re opposed to it, they just don’t like it, and probably prefer taking on Asians and Americans.

by dave on Jul 18, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thiago is agressive, but Machida is the perfect counter aggressor…Thiago did not impress me in his last fight sorry, but I think Machida takes this by decision (imagine that) or TKO with a perfectly landed kick followed up by puches or knees. I also don’t like Thiago’s post fight antics (slitting the thorat) I mean I know hes a fighter and all, but sometimes that crap is annoying. I like reactions similar to Wanderlei, Chuck, or Rampage howling, not disrespectful crap like a throat slit. Anyway this will be a great fight to determine who belongs in top contention and who is getting overhyped. Sorry Thiago, but one Brazillian has got to go….who will it be?

by Chadx23 on Jul 18, 2008 1:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m no Thiago fan, and I also don’t like the way he carries himself inside the octagon. The main reason I don’t like him is that (in Portuguese) he sounds as if he’s from the ghetto and he’s not. He tries to act like he’s someone tuff from the streets but he’s what we call a ‘playboy’ (a rich kid that acts as if he’s from the streets). I’m with Machida in this one all the way, and hope he gets another win!

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good info about Thiago BNF, I figured he was a poor thug from a slum barrio. I still like his aggressiveness.

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Always come to Linx to get schooled. Good info man, I would have never know that. Probably the same reason some people don’t like the Diaz brothers, white kids who speak & act hood, even though Stockton is hood. I have never seen anything in the ring from Thiago that seems disrespectful, what is it? You have to admit he can throw down though.

by BNF on Jul 18, 2008 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BNF, I think James is talking about the throat cutting maneuver he does when he wins a fight, that actually doesn’t bother me too much. My problem is his slang, you can usually tell when someone is talking slang and wasn’t brought up that way, and that’s where Thiago falls, rich kid that talks slang (picture Vanila Ice talking slang and that’s what this kid sounds like). The Diaz brothers were brought up that way, I have no problem with them, Thiago however…

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, he always seems to be respectful to me. Just something about him has always struck me as a hard ass thug. Probably just the beatings he delivers. I don’t know.

by James S on Jul 18, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That sucks because I really enjoy the way he fights, good thing I don’t speak Portugese.

Yep, nice stuff Linx. I really know you’re one of the legit Brazilian threaders here. Thanks for the info. But even with all that, I still like the way Thiago slits the throat! It’s called Showmanship. If only he could speak some English…

by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no doubt, but I think it may be better for you to continue not knowing what he says, if I were to translate some of his post fight interviews you’d get about 25 “no what i’m sayin’” and maybe 4 different words LOL.

by BNF's B_tch aka LINX on Jul 18, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Syd"TheNegation" on Jul 18, 2008 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree with this as well. Slitting the throat is old and tired and disrespectful. It’s way cooler to just be happy and excited. Maybe a backflip like GSP.

by dave on Jul 18, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree…Chuck always KO’d peeps and he never did aything disrespectfull jsut went nutz! I like when people go nuts like GSP backflipping and stuff like that. The whole thorat slitting maneuver is Thiago tryin to act hard and that just tells me he has something to prove…I mean look hoe Tito (the grave digger) ended up lol! Hes in that grave now!

by Chadx23 on Jul 18, 2008 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey the grave digging routine was slightly more entertaining than the throat slit =P

Chadx23:

What I found the funniest with Chuck was when he loses. He counts his fingers in a child like manner (thats the best way to describe it). Funny as fook lol

Personally I like the throat slit manouvre. I don’t think its disrespectful at all. He’s not dancing over a guy or giving him the finger

by Automation on Jul 18, 2008 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This one could go either way. If the best Thiago comes to fight I think he can take this one, but he didn’t look great in his last fight. He did hang in there and get the win though. I will have to say though that I will be rooting for Thiago. Machida is a great fighter (very elusive!) but I just have never been a fan. He’s had alot of boring fights.

Thiago thinks he’s proven himself?? Against who, I ask. He’s got much to learn and Machida will show him that his cockiness is without substance. To answer everyones question about Brazilian fighters not wanting to fight each other, it’s cuz their prideful as fuck.

If I was Silva, I would press the action and accept the fact that I would have to be the aggressor. I’d also work on cutting off the octagon. Could be a real interesting give and take fight.

by Muscle Dolphin on Jul 18, 2008 2:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Voting for Thiago Silva because I cannot stand the boring fight that Machida brings. I want to see BJ Penn take it to Machida again and I think BJ could win with his conditioning now.

by CaptainAmerica1967 on Jul 18, 2008 2:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Interesting to note that Tito almost caught Machida in a submission and wondered if someone like Thiago Silva could submit Machida.

by CaptainAmerica1967 on Jul 18, 2008 2:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If Thiago follows Machida around or tries to be overly aggressive, he will pay the price. Silva should lay back and get Machida out of his gameplan …he should stand in the center and force Machida to throw 1st (ala Rampage v. Liddell). If Machida gets out of his backpedal, counter/run/counter/run, Silva has a chance to disrupt him and show his power.

by SaVaGe on Jul 18, 2008 2:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tito tried that and it didn’t work. So did Sokoudjou and David Heath too. Machida is patient, if they just sit there, he’ll pepper them a little, but he’ll never just charge in.

by Space on Jul 18, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this fight can’t come soon enough! definitely pulling for Thiago to win in his usual devastating fashion, throat slit ritual and all, but I have a feeling this fight will go to the ground. Machida is a smart fighter and knows about Thiago’s TKO/KO victims. I doubt he’ll take a chances standing.

by kama kaze on Jul 18, 2008 2:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he went toe to toe with soko during the first round, and soko is known for his KO power! Machida is not afraid to stand with anyone!

yea they were trading for a bit but he did end up taking sokoudju down to the ground where most of the fight stayed. not saying he’s scared, but i’d guess he’d probably want to do the same with thiago.

by kama kaze on Jul 18, 2008 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah I can see that, BTW the way he threw soko down still amazes me, as soko is a great judo fighter.

he’s dangerous when people are chasing him. to me, his best moment was when he put Tito in crusifix. my stomach went up to my throat during that 1. the thing is, he was throwing those leg kicks forcing guys to chase him. Thiago has nasty leg kicks too! what if he makes Machida come after him?! or what if they each trow leg kicks for 3 rounds? lol

by kama kaze on Jul 18, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Damn this is going to be a good one. Thiago has to come in and push the pace and really get after Lyoto with aggressive striking. The problem in doing this is that Thaigo will leave himself open to Lyotos counter striking. Either Thiago gets on Lyoto quick and takes him out or hes gonna have a long or maybe short night. I like both guys but would have to take Lyoto in this one. I cant wait to see it.

by NorthStar on Jul 18, 2008 2:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thiago’s aggressive style will leave him open to Machida taking him down. Machida is going to try and take him down and grind out a decision or a TKO. That’s the most logical thing to do.

by dave on Jul 18, 2008 3:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This fight is excellent matchmaking by Joe Silva. Machida’s tricky counterfighting coupled with Thiago’s move-forward aggressive style will make this a very exciting fight. Machida will be forced to engage and expose himself. However, I think this is where the viewing public will see Lyoto’s talents shine.

by Mike Calimbas on Jul 18, 2008 3:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully this fight ends with a double ko. One pussy who runs away from his opponent till he fustrates them. Another d@ck who says hes gunna ko you but ends up taking you to the ground and hammer fisting you to victory, followed up by an over the top throat slash.

Im not sure who I think would win a fight between Thiago and Sokudju, and Lyoto mad Soku look pretty bad. I think Lyoto will pick him apart with some surgical strikes for a couple rounds and finish him in the late second or third round.
