I personally, lose so much respect for a fighter when he doesn’t make weight… so much so that it actually made me root for Matt Hughes for the first time in my life!! I wanted Silva already, but now I hope its a violent finish!!
by Harrison on Jul 18, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He made weight still. 2nd try is fine…
by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Irvin just better watch out though ‘cuz with all the pounds he has to shed in that extra time, that might be a factor if this fight goes the distance. but I really don’t see that happenin’ though…Silva will finish this quick!!

great now silva has an excuse to lose… i can just hear it, “well if they wouldnt have let irvin off with the whole weight thing…!!!!” lol

Silva took it as an insult when Lutter failed. Even though Irvin made it barely on the 2nd attempt, still unprofessional.
I hope Silva takes it out on him for it!

i lose respect for fighters that cut weight period. why not just fight at ur natural weight??? oh yeah, cause it means u might have to fight at heavyweight and not all fighters are up for that. i think it’s a joke, if u have to slash 20 lbs. to compete, how much of a competitor are u anyways. i have mad respect for guys like cro cop, fedor, hendo, who aren’t afraid of the big boys and wanna fight at their natural god given weight, regardless of the outcome.
by deuce 4 on Jul 18, 2008 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I almost agree with you. The weight cutting can be pretty ridiculous. Sometimes it defeats the whole purpose of having weight classes. If one guy only has to cut a pound or two in the sauna and his opponent has to cut 15 pounds in the sauna, then by the time the next day roles around, there’s a huge weight difference. If the weigh-ins were the day of the fight, fighters couldn’t afford to cut too much weight via dehydration because they wouldn’t have enough time to rehydrate before the fight. Therefore the fighters would be closer to the same weight during the fight.
by Joe Smith on Jul 19, 2008 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He DID make weight. They don’t have to make wieght the first try, they have a couple of hours to make weight. I don’t know what you are worried about, it only hurts the guy sitting in the sauna sweating (dehydrating themselves)out the last few pound. Have you ever been hung over? Well that is caused by being dehydrated. Try fighting like that.

He made weight, it just took him two tries, which is allowed. He made weight.

And my man Vera is looking cutted up! I don’t care about u Vera haters. i just believe this guy could somehow put it together at 205!
by TheNegation on Jul 18, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He doesn’t have much to put together. He just had some bad luck. He will be a wrecking machine at 205. Not that he wasn’t good at HW, but he was eating crap for food and an athlete doesn’t get in the zone by eating ice cream and cheese burgers. He noticed himself that he was feeling faster and STRONGER (yes it’s possible to be stronger at a lighter weight when you are in the Zone) when he dropped the ice cream fat (dead weight).

he did make weight. read the article. calm the hell down.

If you read the article when it was first posted there was nothing about a 2nd wieght attempt it stated he would fight at 207.5 – It’s since been edited hence all the comments about failing to make it.

WTF is up with the trend of not making weight?
by the_mexicutioner on Jul 18, 2008 7:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Apparently, Travis Lutter started this trend, hehe!!

HE DIDN’T SCREW UP. HE MADE WEIGHT. Alves was 4 lbs over after the sauna and there is NO way you can lose that after already being dehydrated (at least not and expect to win). Irvin had to lose 11/2 lbs and HE DID. Those are THE RULES,so lay off the “He didn’t make weight”.

Is this after his one hour time frame to make 206? On the UFC website it has an asterisk next to Irvin saying he has one hour but I don’t know how long ago that was posted.
by midwestbred on Jul 18, 2008 8:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well with the UFCs track record of not disallowing people to fight if they don’t make weight, it’s not a surprise that people don’t take it as seriously as they should.
I was rooting for Irvin, but not making weight pisses me off.
This is like working as a cab driver and dropping people a block off from where they wanted to go. Be a professional.
by DirtyML on Jul 18, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why would any fighter now cut the last 3 or 4 pounds to fight when obviously there is no punishment for not making weight. If it is a non-title fight just show up at whatever weight you want Dana and company don’t seem to worried about it.
by jay on Jul 18, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
they charge you a percentage of your purse i think. t.alves had to give 12 percent of his regular pay and the same off of his ko of the night bonus.
by earthfirst! on Jul 18, 2008 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why would anyone read only part of the topic and then comment on half of what they read? At least read the KEY WORDS, “FIRST ATEMPT”. That means he DID MAKE WEIGHT, just not on the first try. Is that really that hard to understand.
by Gord on Jul 19, 2008 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if he is under 210 they shouldn’t say “didnt make weight” they arent 205 after weigh ins anyways.. and its 1.5 lbs not 5 or more

GUYS he made weight, just on the 2nd attempt not the first. All those other guys like Lutter and Alves, never made weight on the 2nd try….its not really that big of a deal. GSP has failed to make wieght before and was given an hour and came back at 170…its NO BIG DEAL, but if he didnt make it the 2nd time, then thats F’d up!

I give up, He MADE WEIGHT, A LOT (MOST) of you guys don’t get it. One more time and I’m done, you obviously read 2 words and started typing. HE MADE WEIGHT BY THE RULES!!!! He did nothing wrong. it happens all the time. Alves DIDN’T make weight. Irvin DID MAKE WEIGHT. I’m baffled why this is so hard to understand.

Some of the not-too-bright posters are commenting on Silva’s weighing 206. It’s a non-title fight, guys. He’s allowed, under the rules, to weigh in a pound over the limit. Think before you post.

Irvin weighs 3.5lbs more than Brandon Vera who just dropped from heavyweight… that’s just ridiculous!
by Teufel on Jul 18, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Irvin is in trouble. Anderson Silva has mentioned when someone doesnt make the weight he gets pissed. Alls you have to do is look at Lutter and how he made him pay. By toying with him until he decided to finish the match. This is the only man in MMA who decides when the fight is over. Just re watch the Hendo fight he looks over at the corner then took the back and got him with the RNC!.

The headline must have been changed in this thread. A lot of guys blasting The Sandman for not making weight. He obviously did make weight and dropped the 1.5lbs in the hour given.
This happened to Jon Fitch a few fights back. As well as a few other fighters.
He made weight. Eat crow.

Don’t forget “And it is aaaaaaall over!”.
Oh, and were do you think they get they learn their repitition? Dana. How many times have we all heard about NASCAR and how people would watch two spanish guys fighting even though we can’t understand the announcer, and how the NFL will never break into Europe because kids there didn’t grow up playing football?
Also, I can’t wait fot BJ’s next fight so I can her Rogan say how “He can use his legs like most people use their arms. One time I saw him put his leg up over his head without using his hands to help his leg up”

He made weight….eventually. Unprofessional IMO.
He and Silva both had the same time to make weight, Silva did, he didn’t. Whats the point in making weight at a specific time if you know you’re just going to get an extra couple of hours anyway.
Hope Anderson punishes him.
by bubba on Jul 18, 2008 8:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You are joking right? First of all, Silva was going up in weight. Lets just say his walking around weight is 210-215. Irvins is more like 230. Id say it was a little more difficult for Irvin. Secondly, he got 1 hour, not an extra couple. And im pretty sure 1 hour is standard and it happens almost every event that a guy needs the extra hour. Nothing unprofessional at all and nothing really to be surprised about. You might not like Irvin but dont bash the guy for making weight in the time he was given to make it
by PerdroCerano on Jul 18, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not like he was off by 6lbs like other fighters have been. Maybe he didnt’ get a chance to take a dump that morning. There’s your pound and a half right there. Give the guy a break. So the guy forgot to drink his prune juice before bed the day before, big deal.

just saw the photos of the weigh in, Silva looks good at 205 I’m suprised hes as big as he is. I really thought he would look smaller. Now I am very interested to see this fight, Silva looks confident as ever, Irvin has a smirk on his face so I’m wondering if Silva is starting to get in his head any about now…Irvin has said just about all the right things up to this point so I’m interested to see how this fight plays out. Even if he loses I hope he goes out in style, but I just do not see this fight going passed the 1st round for some reason. I think someone is getting KO’d harshly, just not sure who yet..
