UFC 89: Diego Sanchez vs Thiago Alves not happening in England

thiago alves diego sanchez

Props: WrestlingObserver.com

Quoteworthy:

"The Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez match earmarked for 10/18 in Birmingham, England will not be taking place on the show. The Thiago Silva vs. Lyoto Machida match announced yesterday was to take its place. We don't have an update yet on the status of Alves-Sanchez, other than the match has not been signed."

Dave Meltzer reports that the welterweight showdown between Sanchez and Alves is not going to happen in Birmingham as previously reported. The good news is that is doesn't mean it is off altogether -- hopefully it's just postponed until a later date. To check out the most recent UFC 89 card, which still looks sharp, click here.

Damn. Hoping this is the only one of the fights that doesn’t go ahead, still a good card.

FRIDAY MORNING CONVERSATION WITH KEVIN:
Humm, what to write about today? I went back and forth all night over what to write today, and instead of talking about both events, I’ll just be looking at the one that I’m more interested in. I can’t believe it starts off with two huge match ups for free. For those of you who are new to the sport, Vitor Belfort is an unbelievable fighter, he is always exciting to watch. Wheli Aleks Emelienko is sometimes out of shape, I have a feeling he will be in shape and ready to go in this one.
.
I’ve been the most vocal about the fact that I think Affliction will fail as a promotion. It’s simple economics, you can’t pay one fighter more money than your ppv revenue and ticket sales generate. I was also scared that with two promotions, we’d have twice as many ppv’s to buy, adding to already soaring costs of living. Then I got to thinking. If affliction succeeds, UFC will have to ink a deal with a major network or HBO, the average consumer will not buy two PPV’s a month.
.
Before I get into the fights, I cannot believe John didn’t take a third of his betus account and go for one night to CA and to this event. He has been an outspoken advocate of this event, and when it comes to Fedor fans, would probably make out with him if given the opportunity!
Barnett, Babalu, Lindland, Rizzo and arlovski are enough to entice the hardcore fans. I don’t see any of the big names losing (except Rizzo), but the lopsided match ups could mean great KO finishes!
*

  • Fedor/Sylvia! WOW, I have watched the last emperor 5 times in a month, and it gets me more pumped every time! That said, I feel Sylvia will jab Fedor to death and keep him at bay. His take down defense is good, his power is great! The intangible in my mind is in the past 2 years, Tim has fought top 10 opponents over and over, while Fedor hasn’t fought anyone! I’m a Fedor fan and don’t care for Tim much, so this is my honest unbiased opinion! Watch for a 4th round uppercut connecting and Timmy pouncing. If I’m wrong or right, it doesn’t matter…This should be the fight of the year either way!!!

Last I check this is MMAMania not Kevin’s MMA Corner! Most of us would like to stay on topic and not have to skip over a novel from Joe Blow not related to the lead story.
Please be considerate to the others on this site.

lol mmamac and bill. two impressive comments, glad your in on the conversation. Maybe you’ve missed the fact that it’s a corny thing, I admit it, but yet it gets more responses than some front page news. nice try though, I can’t wait until school is back in session so this site calms down!

Alves isnt loosing anytime soon! The Kid is on FIRE!!!!

by john on Jul 18, 2008 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, and if he keeps coming in almost 5lbs. over the limit, he’s got a good shot to stay on fire!! I hate that kind of crap, abide to the damn rules man. Not everyone will be as chill as Hughes and accept.

by tripleainto on Jul 18, 2008 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You got the Biggest WW vs the Smallest and yet it’s still a great match up. I hope it is only postponed because it would be an entertaining fight. I’ll go with the little guy on this one!

by billycarnage on Jul 18, 2008 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by the way, Matt Hughes will be out another 6 – 7 months with the knee injury…so we can all forget about the Hughes/Serra new years match up!

Also, Affliction just upped the Ante! THey will be airing the whole card! So we will get to see Nogueira after all! Good stuff! between FSN and the pay per view, they will air the complete card!

by john on Jul 18, 2008 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Competition is a great thing, the Affliction card will be great. It’s a great thing to have DVR…

Alves Vs. Diego is a great contender fight but I’d rather see it set sooner then later… Of course that does open New Years up for BJ vs winner of GSP & Fitch. Yep, that’s the new plan, no clear contender, lets just give BJ the jump for two titles.

by Arnold on Jul 18, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John: If you order the PPV..they’ll show the entire card on that channel. You will need to cruise back and forth with FSN. The PVV time is 8:30pm countdown 9pm – 1am for Banned. that first hour I would assume would be to show the undercard matches. What a treat Bro…like with the last UFC86..the undercard matches..were better then the televised portion of the night. I know it’s not the ufc’ fault..but I would like to see the whole fight card of an event.

WAR AFFLICTION!!!! POWER TO THE UNDERCARDS.

Diego getting KTFO!

by SaVaGe on Jul 18, 2008 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

gotta agree with you…I would prefer Diego to win (at least the guy can make weight) but Thiago will probably KO Diego. I dont like either fighter, but I would rather see Diego win, at least his gf is hot. (cant think of anything else?)

by Chadx23 on Jul 18, 2008 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

SaVaGe – I seriously doubt that. Diego will do his bread-and-butter thing, which is to close the distance quickly and take Alves out of his comfort zone. He’s not going to stay Alves’ comfortable striking distance, where Alves has the most power (especially for his nasty kicks). Perhaps Diego does get clocked later, but I seriously doubt this fight will be quick, and I don’t see it going to Alves in the end. I see Diego taking home the W.

by MMACrossfire on Jul 18, 2008 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Diego gets inside, Thiago’s knees are waiting for his face.

by Pat on Jul 18, 2008 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Diego’s stand up has improved but his small frame and lack of “striking” when compared to Alves are big obstacles.

He had a very difficult taking Luigi down and Luigi is a fat pug compared to Alves.

Alves will be kicking with very bad intentions.

I see Alves winning by decision. Diego is super tough and resilient but I feel his true home should be 155.

by OJR on Jul 18, 2008 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ALves is right now the the 3rd best fighter at 170. first 2 go to GSP and Fitch. Diego is around corner in 4th. Kos is still at 5th.

Kos fought a Diego that wasn’t 100% and couldn’t put him away. Im sure it would be a totally different story if Diego fought Kos again at full health. Id like to see a rematch between Kos and ‘Mcluvin.’ I think he’d take Kos the second time around.

by the_mexicutioner on Jul 18, 2008 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think McLovin would beat Kos next time around as well, but realistically we will have to wait a while for the rematch since they fought like 6 months ago, but yeah I think McLovin will definetly win the next fight. Even though Dustin lost, he was working Kos around in the 1st round. THat fight showed McLovin that he belongs against top notch fighters, and at his young age, he will only continue to improve.

Kos vs. Diego (healthy) Part 3 MUST HAPPEN!!! Diego is the best fighter Kos has ever beaten and we all know that diego was about 30% healthy coming into that fight!

I think it was part of his strategy against Hughes. Put on a few pounds of muscle and use his strength to negate the wrestling. He looked significantly bigger in that fight than he normally does. I don’t think making weight had ever been a problem for him in the past and probably won’t again.

by Ballam on Jul 18, 2008 10:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he had a sprained ankle…. i like to see you lose weight with a sprained ankle…. because i know it won’t happen

by ufcaddict on Jul 18, 2008 10:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

dude, if you have a sprained ankle..you hit the sauna and wear a suit. What’s the issue in that? You have a sprained ankle, you tighten it up and ride the bike with no impact.

These are fighters bro..did you forget?? Pain is supposed to be their thing. Last I checked Iverson wanted to play with a broken arm…you feeling me

by tripleainto on Jul 18, 2008 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

silva, franklin, griffin, even jackson were able to make weight on lower limbs that were not 100%…its is no excuse at all. i gues Alves can make weight with using his “special juice”

amen!!!

by brac on Jul 18, 2008 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its no secret he wanted to put on muscle to fight Hughes….He probably bublked up more than usual, miscalculated the new weight cut, and messed up! He isntt he 1st fighter to not make weight and he wont be the last.

I prefer to appreciate his exciting fighting style then focusing on him not making weight again! Get real, it wont happen again! He knows how close he is to getting his shot and I am sure he is fully aware of how unprofessional it was of him not making weight, and it really made him look bad. I expect him to be very consious of this in the future, and I really doubt that it will ever be a problem again!

by john on Jul 18, 2008 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d prefer a guy come in 5lbs heavy and preform then come in dehydrated and pull a Swick…

by Arnold on Jul 18, 2008 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s a pro fighting on the highest level. A sprained ankle is not an excuse for missing weight. He could have:

- hit the sauna
- rode a bike
- went swimming
- used diuretics
- used laxatives
- got a colonic

The last 3 are pretty drastic measures, but you do them as a last resort.

by Mike on Jul 18, 2008 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is bullshit. Bad move on the part of the UFC. The card isn’t a total disaster now, but it’s definitely lost some of its lustre.

Without a proper main event, Lyoto-Thiago, and Soko-Cane doesn’t quite cut it. The addition of Alves-Sanchez would have really made this card.

It’s probably OK for you guys who are getting it for free on Spike, but I’m paying for tickets.

by Kissenger on Jul 18, 2008 10:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dude, there is still time, chill out and have some warm room temperature Ale. That card is a long way off still. You are going to see so many changes from now until then. Dude, I just hope it isn’t cursed the way Bedlam was… that thing changed so much I thought the octagon girls were gonna be put on the card for a scrap.

by tripleainto on Jul 18, 2008 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would have been awesome! Why hasn’t Dana thought of this already? ;-)

by Patriot on Jul 18, 2008 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh he has my friend…it just hasn’t been televised. A lil’ personal show no doubt. :)

by tripleainto on Jul 18, 2008 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about. If the UFC bump anymore fights from 89 to another show I’ll never buy tickets again. I paid for a specific card, if it changes then I don’t get what I paid for. That’s the way I see it. Still looking forward to the experience though.

by Kissenger on Jul 18, 2008 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

safe. I hear that. I actually bought bedlam tickets for my trip to London when it was Chuck and Shogun. We all know how many times that event got changed around. Who would have ever thought that Chuck and Shogun would become Alves vs Hughes.

Damn I’m tired of TUF…dude, we could have seen Nogueira vs. Mir. Why must we wait so long???

by mikeybear on Jul 18, 2008 10:33 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really wanted to see this fight? I wonder why it was cancelled. Maybe Dana thought the card was getting too stacked and worth more than $49.95. Or maybe they need a good match to help draw in Chicago at 90 or the rumored Portland at 91.

by the_mexicutioner on Jul 18, 2008 10:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yo, in keeping with the topic, who is stoked for The Dark Knight? That with Affliction and UFC, what a weekend!

by tripleainto on Jul 18, 2008 10:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This would be a great fight, but I would have to go with Sanchez. When his mind is right, I think he is pretty damn hard to beat.

Hope this fight happens soon.

by Patriot on Jul 18, 2008 10:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I will probably get flamed for this, but I don’t think that Diego deserves to fight Thiago right now. Diego had back to back loses, albeit against good competition, and then a couple of decent wins against cans. Bielkheden? Fioravanti? These are the guys to beat to become a top contender? On the other hand Thiago STOPPED Karo and made Hughes look like a little girl, with his one knock being that he came in over weight. Personally, I would rather see him fight Serra, if Serra beats Hughes, for the #1 contender status. The only problem with that is, it might take a while to set up. P.S. This weekends card is a joke. The most interesting fight is Franca’s return. And I am even and Silva nut!

by RyGuy13 on Jul 18, 2008 10:58 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Flame on. Diego got humped into a questionable split decision loss to the current No. 1 contender (and before I get flamed EVERY split decision is questionable). And I shouldn’t have to rehash the Koscheck situation, but I will. Diego had a nasty staph infection that very nearly forced him to retire the day before the fight. He got in anyway and still made it a full three rounds. At 100% Diego is a handful for anybody in the WW division. He will beat Alves, then beat the winner of GSP-Fitch for the title.

by PW on Jul 18, 2008 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

RyGuy13 – I agree with PW, except that I don’t see Diego getting the title… yet. I see him getting it a year from now. I don’t see him besting GSP or Fitch this year.

by MMACrossfire on Jul 18, 2008 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Diego has looked real good as of late. If he can stay healthy I think he takes alves in a decision and rematches against kos for #1 contender.

I think he then beats Kos for the title shot and proceeds to get his ass handed to him by GSP.

Hopefully BJ stays at 155 for a while and doesn’t muck it up.

by DonnyG on Jul 18, 2008 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

GSP didn’t hand kos his ass, I don’t think that he will Diego either. I don’t think Diego is quite ready for GSP, but I think that it would be a very entertaining fight, and way closer than many may think. Other than that, I agree with your assesment.

by Patriot on Jul 18, 2008 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve said this on a number of ocassions but in the last few UK shows we have really been screwed. Why does the UFC think Bisping/Leben is main event worhy? Alves/Sanchez I was really looking forward too and felt that combined with the rest it would perhaps make a decent show. Now the card just seems really average without this fight.

by Stozo on Jul 18, 2008 11:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Diego will NEVER have the belt. He’s a contender and always will be.

by Mike on Jul 18, 2008 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This fight card is still awesome. What I find funny is Machida vs Silva isn’t the headlining fight. These two could possibly be fighting to be the #1 contender for the LHW title and instead the UFC is headlining two MW who will have at least 1-2 more fights before they are ready for a title shot. Come on Dana, I know the fight is in England but get of Bisbing’s nuts!

by Komakino on Jul 18, 2008 11:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Glad this isn’t happening overseas. Thiago would probably resort back to diuretics after not making weight last time since they don’t test for it in England.

Maybe they didn’t book this fight for UFC 89 because it’s free, and they didn’t wanna throw all the good fights in there. I’m not expecting anymore exciting fights for this one. We’re gonna have to stick to the three good fights they already have and a pretty average or below fight card. Take a look at the main event, it’s a joke man

They should make this card ultra pimp because bedlam got bent over and taken like Jenna up in big bear. You should have seen the program, the thing got changed so much, the matches in the official program weren’t even up to date.

The UFC owes the UK fans a sick card!! This is coming from a fan in Canada, but I’m telling it like it is..ya’ll deserve a sweet card.

Sanchez had to pull out because he injured his “baby mad at mommy” staredown look. So weak. The card is a joke anyways. Bisbing LOST in ENGLAND last time to that deaf guy anyways!!! He was DOMINATED and the judges threw the decision. The comments by Joe Rogan were hilarious because of the utter disbelief that Bisbing won the decision. Also funny was the fact that on the DVD of the fight, they end the DVD immediately after the decision and cut all of Rogan’s audio out. Way to go Zuffa Productions!
