Aleksander Emelianenko vs Paul Buentello Affliction fight canceled
Aleksander Emelianenko failed to meet the medical licensing requirements and will be unable to compete against Paul Buentello tomorrow night at the Affliction: "Banned" event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
MMAmania.com just confirmed the bad news with California State Athletic Commission Executive Director, Armando Garcia, directly.
The state has very strict medical privacy laws; therefore, Mr. Garcia was unable to elaborate on the situation.
He did mention that the CSAC would help find and license a new opponent for Buentello if the fighter and the promotion are interested; however, with the event slated to begin in about 24 hours the window of opportunity is real small.
The heavyweight slugfest between Emelianenko and Buentello was supposed to be the featured bout on the Fox Sports Net telecast -- there's no word yet on how it will look with this latest news.
Stay tuned.

Apparently being a known felon from another country is now considered a health risk.

Yup, the California athletic commision is one of the worste out of all the state athletioc commisions. Whenever there are fights in Cali, there is usually BS attached. That athletic comission is a joke because everyone knows Aleks was more than Ready/capable of destroying Buentello. They guy did time in Russian prison, u think he gives 2 sh*ts about what is medical conditions is? He is a crazy, pyscho, warrior and I say let him rip Buntello in half!

Yes, it is BS. I’d really want to get in a nice bloody fight with someone who has HIV or Hepatitis. That would be fun—I could make $15K and be dead in three years.
Maybe one if his prison “girlfriends” gave him something.

Its Cali, everytime fights take place there, some BS is always attached! This fight should have taken place in VEGAS!!!

Not to say I told you so, but I told you so:
MMA News reports:
A source close to the situation spoke to MMANews.com’s Michael Moody on a condition of anonymity and explained that the blood tests came back right before Aleks and Buentello were scheduled to weigh in and that is why there was so much confusion around the stage and why the fighters did not weigh in. Gary Goodridge ended up stepping up on extremely short notice and filling in for the Russian heavyweight.
The tests were positive for Hepatitis B which resulted in the CSAC canceling the fight. …
A positive Hepatitis B test is no laughing matter and this could spell the end of Aleks’ fighting career as many of the people close to the situation pointed out. I can’t imagine many fighters willing to step up to fight Aleks with the possibility of catching the disease. He most definitely will not fight in the United States again and it will be interesting to see if this positive test results in organizations from all over the world black listing the brother of heavyweight king, Fedor Emelianenko.

maybe they’ll 100% show Belfort vs Martin now. Before it wasn’t guaranteed to be shown.

If Fedor refused to sign with UFC partly because they wouldn’t take his brother, is he going to bail on this fight at the last minute?
by PW on Jul 18, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Fedor wanted the UFC to take his entire camp at Red Devil, not just his bro.

it wasn’t fedor it was his manager, who he’s fired before, but the guy is like dana white of russian mma, and get’s fedor top dollar. But unfortunetly the guy is a jack@ss. Fedor and the other red devils are kind of obligated to deal with the guys bullsh*t. so before you guys say its all fedor, you should read a little deeper into it.

This really sucks, one of the few fights on this overhyped, overrated card that could have been competitive. Would have been an exciting fight.

this has happened to Aleks before, a couple times I think. I wonder what the problem is?

This was one of the fights that I was really wanting to see! This sucks! Well Affliction, welcome to the world of MMA…this is the kind of shit that happens all the time.
I really think this hurts the card. This was basically their main event for free tv. Now the only big names on the free tv portion will be Vitor Belfor and Terry Martin(and he’s really not a big big name)
by WarriorCenter on Jul 18, 2008 8:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
U realize they can just add Nogueira’s twin brother to the televised portion and Bump Buentello off of TV!
by john on Jul 19, 2008 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
do you think Belfort still carries a big fan base?
by Robert on Jul 18, 2008 8:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
u would think the csac requirements would be known ahead of time so all the fighters would know what the proper clearance is and what to expect

i think you just have to pass a standard sports physical
