correction, he has his name on a lot of things. It’s been reported in the past that his net worth is deceiving.

correction- over 1 billion is alot of money.
by ~stinky~fingers~ on Jul 17, 2008 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions
whats his net worth?? I agree he’s rich, but I’ve read in the past “his” buildings aren’t his like he says, he actually gets paid for his name on them. Either way he’s got money, but that means nothing as far as an mma organiztion that is paying it’s main event more than it will make is concerned!
by kevin on Jul 17, 2008 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions
I guess some one doesnt know what net worth means. I’d be willing to bet Trumps net worth is under a billion.

to say Donald Trump aint filthy rich is stupid…
by Chadx23 on Jul 17, 2008 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions
don’t think that is what kevin was saying….. i was thinking the same thing myself… he tries to make it seem like he’s worth a hundred billion dollars but he’s in the business of selling his ideas to other investors, and has been successful over the years so now plastering his name on a building makes it seem rich and extravagant so investors will give him money.. he’s really only worth around 2 billion i think… still a shit load of money yes, but ppl think cuz he’s here that affliction is a sure bet… doubt it. The donald is not accustomed to losing money so i doubt he’s putting much of his own money into this thing. He’s associating his name with it in hopes to attract investors. If they don’t make money by the 3rd event or so, watch how fast donald bails out
by crowls on Jul 17, 2008 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions
The verdict is still out about him, but I don’t think that he’s going to float the thing financially, I just think he’s going to throw his considerable marketing clout at it, and reap in profits when it takes off. If it doesn’t he’s going to get out of it losing the least amount possible.
by dave on Jul 17, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I was basically going to say exactly what Dave said. Trump is very wealthy, I have no idea what his total net worth is, but I think we can all agree it is considerable. That being said, he is not going to lose millions to help build up a company to compete with the UFC. If Affliction does not do well early on, he will be gone like the wind.

doubt it, that would piss dana and the fertitas off and watch the money they shell out for fighter contracts if that happens

Did they buy the actual IFL brand, or just buy the contracts of the fighters that they wanted? If they couldn’t do anything with the Pride name, I can’t see them doing a hell of a lot with the IFL.

That explains why they were able to show Reese Andy’s IFL clips on the Countdown show. I was wondering why they were able to do that without showing some kind of “thanks to the IFL for allowing us to show these crappy clips.”

That interview on Howard Stern shows how little Trump knows about MMA. However, he’s a awesome businessman, and he has a good chance of making Affliction work.
by THORAZINE on Jul 17, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions
So we now officially have Donald Trump in the world of MMA. I knew he would find his way into this sooner or later. I guess Tito and him chatted alot more than I thought during the apprentice taping.
I’d like to know Donald’s actual knowledge of MMA and see if he knows anything at all about the sport. Man, this dude never gets tired does he?
by tripleainto on Jul 17, 2008 10:06 AM EDT reply actions
You can tell Trump doesn’t know jack about MMA. Just listen to the words he uses in conversations when talking about the sport. He has a giant ego and therefore thinks he knows everything about all things.
by Jason on Jul 17, 2008 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Trump thought Tito won his fight against Machida, that should sum up his knowledge of mma.
by Haze on Jul 17, 2008 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Trump thinks that Big Tim out weights Fedor by about a hundred pounds! The non sense he talks in the interview show his lack of knowledge on MMA.
by FU on Jul 17, 2008 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions
Lol you guys all got your panties in a bunch for nothing. This is a dumb discussion period. “Does the guy know what he’s talking about in MMA?” Does it matter, he certainly isn’t doing anything to hurt MMA. He isn’t trash talking other companies and he isn’t stating that he knows much about MMA at all he’s just saying its the new wave and he wants to get into it. He forking out money and trying to get a general interest in Fedor, no harm in that. He’s got an investment here and he needs to protect that investment. He’s doing more publicity stunts then Tom and he also is trying to get a huge name draw in Tito to join Affliction. Even if the Donald knows nothing about MMA he is business savy and showing it everytime his mug shows up on MMAmania.

I think it’s great. For what Trumps knows about MMA is good enough to put his " 2 cents "..in. His 2 cents are huge. The more Affliction shows he does..the better. more and more top talent will be having their agents on the phone with Affliction..and putting Joe Silva on hold. I don’t expect for Trump night to day get what most of us get in MMA..that’s not realistic. what’s real is he is the guy pushing Affliction into position to mirror the UFC..which can only gbe a good thing for MMA.
by PhilQNY on Jul 17, 2008 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
PhilQNY, Affliction mirroring the UFC??? In order for any other Org. to come close to the UFC, they would have to get a decent size roster first. As much as I hate to say it, ProElite has the best chance if they got the right guy running it. All Affliction is right now is another M1-Global. Who do they really have signed? And I mean signed for more than 1 or 2 fights? Last I heard they signed Edwin Dewees to a couple of fights.
by JV on Jul 17, 2008 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions
JV: U have to start somewhere. Phil isnt saying it will happen overnight but it has a better chance then most new organizations that try to break into the USA mma market. If EliteXC has survived this far, then you have think that Affliction has a great shot at eventually directly competing with the UFC (still atleast 5 years away). No new Organization has ever produced a 1st show like this, and have a lot of big money backers to support its growth.
Dont be fooled, AFFLICTION at the very least has a shot at surviving and eventually maybe mirroring the UFC. OUt of all the new company that have tried to start in the USA, Affliction seems to be the one that has the best chance at making it BIG and staying Big.
As long as it shows potential and grows with each show, Trump will dump more and more money into this thing and then the skies the limit.
Dont forget, if fedor destroys Tim saturday, which is more than possible, and couture wins his court case in a couple of months, we could easily see Affliction producing Fedor vs. Couture which I dont care what anyone will say, even the casual fans will go bonkers over this fight giving Affliction instant credability, and it could officially put Affliction on the map, Much faster than even Trump could have imagined
Affliction has more than a punchers chance…I seem them as an underdog, with very good odds!
by john on Jul 17, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Very good pionts john, but I think Affliction is not in it for MMA. I think Affliction is only in it for the long run of their clothing line and music groups. Tom Atencio said himself on InsideMMA he was in the entertainment business first meaning (clothes & music groups) Thats kinda what turned me off of getting the Affliction show.
by JV on Jul 17, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I could care less about the show…The production probably wont be as great as the UFC’s thats for sure, but to me its all about the fights and the fighters that wioll be competing on Saturday will Bring it!
Fedor has some doubters in America and he has to prove to be a huge pay per view draw (cause casual fans are idiots), so I believe he will BRING IT!
Barnett is HUGE in Japan but needs to increase his American fanbase as well so he will Bring it for sure
This is a bounce back fight for Babalu so he will be furocious as usual!
I think Rothwell is really going to go after Arlovski and force that fight to be entertaining. Andre wont snooze through this one with a win, he will either have to fight or take some big shots….Keep in mind Rothwell has a nice high kick, that has KO people on a couple of different occasions.
Only fight that has a chance of being lame is….Lindland! That guy just doesnt get it! All the skills but NO Marketability and just 1 boring fight after another….has he ever won in entertaining fashion? U guys want to bash Machida? Lindland is who u should bash! Smelly Skunk!

by PhilQNY on Jul 17, 2008 10:32 AM EDT reply actions
I agree with your comment some what. I want MMA to succeed and competition breads success. However if some of the competition are able to get stronger and more financial stable and have the ability to be around for the long haul it brings us back to the state we we were in when Pride and the UFC were the prominent organizations…who’s better. With Dana’s non-willingness to work with other organizations we won’t see the best fighters fighting each other, more than likely.
by Jason on Jul 17, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions
Jason : If the NBA, NFL , MLB, MLS, are like earth in the it revoles.. MMA is a like the astoroid from Armmegedon. I don’t think we will witness other late 90’s early 00’s ..between the UFC and Pride. I’m still can’t see clearly what is around the corner.. but with Mark Cuban..Donal Trump..soon enough more moguls will put their dough behind MMA. The UFC is turning into “Cuba”..It will always have it’s symbolic value..but how it’s doing business today will counter productive for their own growth..when Dana wants to cock block EliteXc/ and Affliction.. he is really cock blocking himself. The UFC is the shit..we all know that.. We are watch TUF shows/PVV’s/UFN.etc..the only choice the other promotions have are to do what they are doing..working together..against a common enemy. Dana is going to protect his business..and his mentality..is …" F them.. who wants. needs them..we’re the shit..and will always be..we’ll do things my way.." but now with Affliction catching waves.. the other option of the " MMA highway ".. has new exits that can get you ( fighter/fan ) where you want to go.
by PhilQNY on Jul 17, 2008 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions
I dont know….I think one major org is a good thing..when compairing it to the other sports…If UFC has the top guys, makes the most money, is the place where the top fighters want to be, it will work…Just like the NFL is the professional football league that the athletes want to be..there is also canadian football, European football, and arena football, the players still get payed to be pro football players, but they all want to be in the NFL..I think thats what MMA should be..the other leagues like EliteXC ect. are the arena footballs…they are pro fighters, but you have to be a pro athlete to be in the UFC. The fans will know that the UFC is the best, and they are watching EliteXC for the smae reason people watch arena football, the love of the sport…thats just my opinion on how it should be…if the UFC is top dog in every weight class, they would have more shows, more free events, make more money because they are what everyone watches when they want to see the best, then they will have to pay the fighters accordinly…just my opinion, but if it doesnt ever happen, thats fine with me, it seems far fetched at this point…but if you look at the history of the NFL, it was NFL first, then the AFL came along, so they joined the two…much like UFC/PRIDE. If the UFC was able to pay the fighters as much as the NFL pays there players, it would already be like this…i just dont know how they will get that kind of cheddar
by mma dude on Jul 17, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
affliction/trump is giving me fedor/sylvia and arlovski/rothwell and dana isnt. this is an easy choice for now, but the thing you bring up about “moguls” and how they will pony up enough money to challenge the ufc someday might happen, but who’s gonna be the next dana? talk bad about him all you want, but he IS the #1 guy in mma and no one else is close. for any of these other orgs to truely challenge the ufc, they will need alot more than money, (the ufc and the fertittas have plenty of that ) they will need someone who has the same drive, the same buisness savy and true passion for the sport like dana white. without dana white and the ufc, there would be no affliction or elite xc.
by b.w. on Jul 17, 2008 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Having loads of other organisations that are equal will turn MMA into the same farce that boxing has become. 5 or more different organisations with a world champ, unification fights (which Dana will never allow) take place to infrequently and the fans suffer as you never know who the best REALLY is.
Boxing 60yrs ago you knew who the heavyweight champ of the world was, it was simple. If, god forbid, Kimbo wins the Elite belt in his next rigged fight that doesn’t put him on a par with Randy or Big Nog but he is still “World Champ.”
Yes, competion is good for the fans as we see more fights but UFC is the main organisation and will be for years to come, they do it bigger and better.
by UKmmaBOY on Jul 17, 2008 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions
MMA is not like any other sport ever. I want the UFC to grow and put on more shows.. but I want Affliction to do so too. As John pointed out in his tpost. Affliction has the best chance to compete with the UFC.. Dana feels the same way.. that’s why we are getting UFN14 on the same night. The beef I have with the UFC politics is the best fighters should fight the best fighers.
Wandy vs Chuck only went down, cuz Zuffa bought pride..it shouldn’t of been like that. There is alot of money at stake and ego’s. I rep MMA to the fullest. I rep the UFC. I rep Affliction. I rep the fighters. I don’t ep the politics. I respect the MMA business..but Dana’s cock blocking on july 19/26th is just not good.
by PhilQNY on Jul 17, 2008 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Phil, I agree with what you say, there should be healthy competition for UFC and it would be great if Affliction can be that, what would be bad for MMA is four or five “top” organsisations having champs and no one knowing who is best. Also agree Dana should allow cross promotion, IMO the only thing stopping this is the worry that UFC fighters lose and they cant promote themselves as the premier MMA organisation.
by UKmmaBOY on Jul 17, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
UKmmaBOY: That’s one part of Dana’s not wanting to put his Champs out there. there is a 50/50 chance of them losing each time out. He can afford for them to lose inside the octagon, but not outside of it. The UFC is self-sustained. They market the best MMA fighters in the world with the UFC brand. I doubt we will ever see the best fighters fight the best fighter’s regardless of promotion with the UFC in the equation.
by PhilQNY on Jul 17, 2008 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Phil: u r so right! That is the problem I have with the UFC as well. Hopefully if Affliction can grow to be as big as the UFC, then it may make Dana cross promote every once in a while, but until a company can compete with the UFC directly in the US market, Dana will never cross promote because it will give credability to the organization he is cross promoting with.
by john on Jul 17, 2008 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
theres alot of good points made here by all, but imo in order for anyone to challenge the ufc, its gonna take alot more than just money. the ufc has plenty of that. i guess what im trying to say is who’s gonna be the next dana white. its gonna take another person like him with as much drive, business savy and passion for the sport to put another org. over the top. talk bad all you want about dana, but without him the ufc would not be where it is today and there would be no affliction or elite without the ufc’s current success. only time will tell.
