Shane Carwin vs Neil Wain UFC 89 fight confirmed

shane carwin neil wain ufc 89
Up-and-coming heavyweight prospects, Shane Carwin (9-0) and Neil Wain (4-0), will lock horns at UFC 89: "Leben vs. Bisping" at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 19, according to UFC.com.

Carwin lived up to the hype in his inaugural appearance for the promotion, finishing Christian Wellisch with a punch just 44 seconds into their encounter at UFC 84: "Ill Will" in May. The enormous Colorado native still has not made it into the second round of any of his professional mixed martial arts fights.

In fact, Carwin has spent less than eight minutes COMBINED in his nine pro performances.

Wain was was set to make his Octagon debut against Antoni Hardonk at UFC 85: "Bedlam" last month; however, the British fighter sustained a broken nose during training and was forced off the card at the last minute. He has not competed since a technical knockout win over Victor Aniolek at an Ultimate Force show earlier this year.

Don't expect this one to last very long.

Sounds like a pretty sloppy HW fight that you would expect to see in an organization like EliteXC.

I wonder how the winner of this fight would stack up against Dave “Pee Wee” / “Blueberry Muffin” Herman?

That sounds a little harsh. Could be the future of the HW division. Carwin’s resume sounds pretty impressive to me. Give them a chance.

I think that Dave Herman would whoop up on either of these guys. I don’t know of Neil, but Shane looked pretty impressive in his first UFC fight. But so do a lot of HW’s when they are up against inferior, 3rd rate talent.

Neil will beat him in 2 min. he is a very very good fighter u wait and see.

“Blueberry Muffin”LMAO WTF is wrong with Pee Wee? Is he slow or just country?

by john on Jul 15, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

elite only takes the ufc’s rejects. (eilers?) this kid hasnt lost a fight and fallen from grace, so he would not fit in so well with elite yet.

the ufc’s HW division is pretty weak. i’m glad to seem them signing some more. yeah they may be rookies, but the building up of the division has to start somewhere.

Agreed….Look out for Cain Velasquez as well. He’s on the 7/19 card and I’ve been hearing great things about him. I think Cain & Carwin are on a collision course.

I think in about a year 1/2 to two years Carwin will be fighting Cain Velasquez for a #1 contender shot.

You are in for a treat. I have been to Vegas twice. Chuck/Rampage and BJ/Sherk. It was by far the best sporting event I have been to.

by BNF on Jul 15, 2008 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope so :)

I’d love to see my boy BJ but maybe another time.

The wife has been told, I’m attending a lot more ‘Live’ events from now on for my 2 loves. MMA and F1 :)

Since this is free are we going to be able to see all the fights?

by Vette on Jul 15, 2008 1:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no, even less, considering the advertisements the show will be 2.10 hours long instead of 3..

by shamo84 on Jul 15, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To bad most of the best fights are usually unaired.

by Vette on Jul 15, 2008 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A total of 8 minutes in the ring/cage, in 9 fights?!?! Very respectable. Can’t dog on fight finishers like that. Dana is probably blowing his load over this guy.

i like carwin he hits hard and is an ex wrestler, but i don’t see him ever being a champion as long as brock lesnar is around, but i think him and vera at heavyweight woulda been a great fight, same with werdum the guy needs more fights that’s for sure

by randy murders on Jul 15, 2008 1:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i should add he needs more fights just because he’s fun to watch not because hes inexperienced lol

by randy murders on Jul 15, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

mmm…Carwin vs Lensar would be a great match up. classic wrestlers match up.

by Ro on Jul 15, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was a true highlight reel KO on Christian Wellisch. He definetly has power.

by sy on Jul 15, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this will be an awesome night of fights but im sure people find something to complain about.

by doomdoom on Jul 15, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sherdog has him at just under 10 minutes for his 9 fights combined. But who’s counting? Even at that, he’s averaging just over a minute per fight and that’s pretty damned impressive. I wonder what his wife says about him finishing early?

Carwin’s weakness will be exposed when he climbs in the ring with a heavy weight BJJ black belt. Knock out artits always seem to be exposed on the ground. Can anyone say Huston Alexander?

by Mike on Jul 15, 2008 3:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

true, but some of them have good BJJ or ground skills like Spider, Anthony Johnson, even Carwin and more. Shane Carwin has strong wrestling and i’ve seen his fight videos before he was in UFC, this guy was a monster with some serious ground and pound. there’s not many fighters with blackbelt BJJ in HW division, Gonzaga has blackbelt BJJ, it’s interesting to see a high level wrestler vs blackbelt BJJ match up, you don’t see that very much in UFC or MMA. i like to see Carwin vs Gonzaga match up.

by Ro on Jul 15, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, wrestling vs BJJ has been going on since Shamrock vs Gracie. I could list at least half a dozen more of the classic matchups.

by Kimura by Fedor on Jul 15, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course it’s been going on in UFC but you’re not gonna see some BJJ vs wrestling matches in every UFC events. that’s how few it is.

by Ro on Jul 15, 2008 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gonzaga vs Carwin. Both could use the win to legitimize their standing in the UFC. Gonzaga to come back and Carwin to come up. This would be an excellent match up all the way around. Good call Rio.

by Mike on Jul 15, 2008 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carwin will win this one.
