GSP is gonna dominate Fitch, no doubt.

I think Fitch is going to use his stand up.
That will throw GSP and we all know GSP is a bit concerned about his chin nowadays.
I really hope that my boy GSP does win in emphatic fashion though :)

Fitch won’t stand with GSP, his striking is too quick. I think this will turn into a GnP or Submission fight. I’m still pulling for Fitch; he’s got the heart to pull it off.
by Arnold on Jul 15, 2008 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You heard it here Arnold ;)
Fitch will stand up which will catch GSP off guard.
GSP is too good to be fooled though but I don’t expect GSP to trade with him.
GSP in his last few fights have been a wrestlers game and he cannot keep using the excuse ’I’m beating them at their own game’ for too much longer. GSP needs to get rid of the getting KO’d demon.
by Automation on Jul 15, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Like you said, GSP won’t be fooled, that’s why I don’t see Fitch standing with him too long. Maybe for a minute or two.
I think Fitch will suprise everone with his ability to fight from him back… I think that will be his best way to a victory.

If Fitch plans on winning from his guard, he’s going to get destroyed.
by Hardcharger on Jul 15, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You’ve clearly stated Fitch will get “destroyed” from any position… I think catching GSP in a submission is a real posiblility and fighting from his guard is something we haven’t seen from Fitch
by Arnold on Jul 15, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I never stated that Fitch would get destroyed from any position. He doesn’t match up well, but that does not equate to getting destroyed from every position.
Since Fitch hasn’t shown much guard work, the odds that he can catch GSP are more than remote. GSP tears through the guards of BJJ black belts who are known for great guards all the time. Fitch hasn’t shown a dangerous guard, and the last person you want on top of you in the WW division is GSP. His GNP is tops, and he’s nearly impossible to submit (and he can sub you from the top).
by Hardcharger on Jul 15, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You have to be on your back to show your guard.
by TonyDrip on Jul 15, 2008 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Did I see somone type that Fitch would give problems to GSP standing ? LOL wow, just because he doesn’t stand anyonre because he has some of the best wrestling in the world, doesn’t mean Fitch is gonna give him problems on his feet.
Fitch only chance is to get GSP on his back, OR a ( i wont say lucky) but unexpected punch. And how does GSP not have chin, It’s not like he got knocked out with one punch, I believe It was like 20 punches b4 it stopped.

Hey OJR – basically GSP saying how he’s preparing for the “toughest fight to date” and wants to get his first successful defense as champ, more mature…happy he’s nominated for ESPY’s, but he’s not attending to focus on training
- not afraid of bj penn, recognizes he’s different a bj penn but he’s also waaay different GSP

has anyone ever thought how wooden gsp is.i know its all about the fighting skills but at least rampage/griffin and bj as champions have a bit of personality about them.at least theres another way to knock you out with his hands feet and boringness.
by SCOTT on Jul 15, 2008 9:34 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i think it’s more like he is just image conscious like Jordan was back in the day. He’s probably got plenty of personality in person. I bet the language thing plays a pretty big part in it too. I work with a lot of ppl who have english as a second language and it’s tough to make a lot of jokes when there’s some language issues.
by crowls on Jul 15, 2008 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed… remember the “I was not impressed by your…” comment to Hughes??? The intent was lost in the translation and GSP will not make that mistake again.
by DJ on Jul 15, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he is not fully confident in his english skills and it shows. he is also a hell of a lot more professional/serious than griffin or rampage. so they do appear quite opposite (not having a dig at forrest or quinton, love em.. but they certainly dont act like “serious pros” all the time… or in forrest case, ever. Ie in the title fight, when rampage had his “game face” on.. forrest laughed at him…)

GSP got this all the way no way Fitch even take a round if it goes to decision. I don’t see this going to 5 rounds. My prediction is round 3 submission (rear naked choke). I can not stand Fitch bye bye winning streak. I guess you can winning whole bunch of fight when you are fighting cans. Now will see what he can do against a warrior like GSP.
by TKO on Jul 15, 2008 9:34 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Brock Larson, Thiago Alves, Diego Sanchez, and Roan Carneiro are cans? Wow, everyone is saying Thiago is a title contender. Fitch stopped Thiago. Technical Knockout! Fitch definately has his work cut out for him as GSP is no joke, but don’t think he has no chance of winning. You don’t go 8 straight in the UFC without having some skill and when he fought guys like Burkmam it was when they were being featured and not him. He made himself be recognized by winning. I hope he pulls the upset off so I can hear all the cry babies make excuses for GSP like they did after Serra beat him. What’s going to be the excuse now?
by getrawbc on Jul 15, 2008 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Diego is one I give you and man was that a boring fight. Thiago is not the fighter he was back then he even lost to spencer fisher are you telling me he would loose to him again. He has improved so much I honestly don’t think Fitch can beat him again.
All the other fighters are OK nothing special. Man I keep thinking the Chris Wilson fight I was thinking this is the guy that everone think that can hang with GSP something doesn’t add up. My question is what’s going to be Fitch excuse when he looses………. Nothing everyone expect him to loose to a better fighter
by TKO on Jul 15, 2008 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Wilson fight was the only thing that stood between Fitch and a shot at the belt, so yes, he dogged the fight and got the sure decision.
Everyone expects Fitch to loose and everyone expects GSP to win, that’s great for Fitch. He’ll put it all on the line and I am sure it will not be like the Wilson fight.
When did Thiago imporve? He still has the same KO power he did 4 years ago. Someone like Fitch is smart enough to keep him down and pound him out. I’d say fitch would win 9 times out of 10 with Thiago.
by Arnold on Jul 15, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Man you don’t see Thiago’s improvement in his takedown defense, not even the great matt hughes could take him down and hold him down, yes matt hughes the wrestler. Fitch will not be able to hold him down if he takes him down. Fitch is a big strong 170 I give him that, I respect the fact he cut down from LHW but skills or quickness he can’t keep up with GSP or thiago. I think his best attribute is his work ethic. The reason why everyone expects him to loose is for a reason, GSP is simply put better than him.
by TKO on Jul 15, 2008 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hughes looked like a sick dog when he answered Dana’s request to get rocked by Alves. Alves’s takedown defense was so solid because it was the only thing he had to worry about from Hughes. It’s pretty easy to defend against something when you know its comming ever single time. Stong stand up and striking opens up the take down and this is what I’d see fitch doing.
I loved Alves in the Karo fight; I just didn’t like his attitude and weight for the Hughes fight. He has imporved but he was still very solid when Fitch walked through him the first time.
I don’t disagree with you on GSP being better on paper, the same way Rampage is better then forest on paper and GSP is better then Serra on paper. The main reason is that you can’t factor heart and drive onto a paper. I think Fitch will show up and get the best of GSP. Maybe GSP can bet him 7 times out of 10 but no one is 100% in MMA at this level of competition.
by Arnold on Jul 15, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you people don’t fight on paper, and GSP is not invisible he has lost two fights. Just like New England lost last year after winning all other games they lost the superbowl. It could happen………. I wouldn’t put money on it.
See I was not really impressed with Alves in Karo fight up to the devastating knee, I thought Karo was winning up to that point, obviously Thiago won in a convincing fashion at the end. In The Hughes fight I was really impressed he took it to him. After that I was like this guy is something to look out for. He is a really young guy that keeps on improving. Fitch in other had has never impressed me like that.

come on guys, fitch isn’t a chump that’s going to get smoked. i mean, he might get smoked, but he’s good enough to hand with georges. i expect georges to shred him up standing, rock him, and then display the best elbow gnp in the game to finish him in the 3rd. or georges gets the UD. i think georges is definitively better all around than fitch, but fitch is a game, cerebral dude and it’s gonna be a awesome test for both of them.
i like how georges never full on addresses bj, he just plays it cool while bj froths at the mouth. can you imagine them headlining a new years eve card? daaamnn..
by Phil Baloni on Jul 15, 2008 9:42 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought he addressed it pretty well. I was expecting the normal comments about only focusing on Fitch and then after that ’We’ll see’. Instead, he says he’ll fight him or anyone other challenger and BJ is going to face a “way better GSP”. Not sure how else he is supposed to address it.
by PJJ on Jul 15, 2008 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he certainly snapped out a “im not afrad of anyone!” as soon as he was asked about bj. i do think he is worried about him, but legitimately so. bj’s gassing was, to me, his only weakness… i fear what he can be like now for 25 minutes.
by eightyproof on Jul 15, 2008 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The more GSP thinks about BJ the better for Fitch. I’ll be pissed if GSP comes out cold with no head on his shoulders. I want Fitch to win but only if its a battle. We don’t need another Rampage type title loss…

I can’t believe some (actually a lot) of guys still go on about GSP’s head. WAKE UP and SMELL the reality of the situation. GSP lost ONLY 2 fights (shit happens), then he DESTROYED those 2 guys. Everybody loses a few (usually more than 2),so why make it sound like there is a good chance GSP will lose because of his head. By the way he avenged his 2 loses shows just how strong his head is.
by Gord on Jul 15, 2008 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BJ still hasn’t proven he can go for 25 minutes, or that he can be in shape at 170 lbs. Beating Sherk after 3 rounds, when Sherk barely attempted a TD doesn’t prove BJ can beat GSP, not even close. It would be a great fight, but GSP would win the fight even more convincingly this time.
by Hardcharger on Jul 15, 2008 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
shhhh…i smell a BJ Penn hater. Hardburger, you must have have been bent when BJ smashed Sean. Yes he smashed him!!! the last fight BJ had with GSP it was a very very very close split. We have seen the same well trained highly talented GSP this last fight, but it was Serra he was fighting and before that a washed up Hughes. A fight with the NEW improved BJ would GSP him self knows (thats why he tried to convince him self of not being scared when asked) that the second time around will be different.
by Kahaluu Caz!!!!!! on Jul 15, 2008 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure that was a ‘smashing’.
He jabbed Sean “T-Rex arm” Sherk to death for three rounds and finished him with a solid knee.
He solidly beat sherk
I mean, Sean didn’t really try to take him down, whether he couldn’t or he was scared of BJ’s ground I dunno. Sherk was outmatched in this fight, but stuck to a questionable game.
You can say he’s a ‘new improved bj’ but it’s also a ‘new improved’ GSP. GSP and BJ Nuthuggers are always gonna argue about this until it finally happens.
And even after if BJ wins, it’ll be “it’s 1-1 now, best of 3” and if GSP wins, I’m sure the BJ boys will have some excuse, maybe about him being ‘out of his weight’ and the ‘debate’ will rage on ^^;

as for georges public comment style, i think he’s got his canned answers because he deals with so much press all the time and there’s a tendency to pick ones words apart, so he plays it safe, says what he needs to say and then gets back to the business at hand. he sure repeats himself alot, but whatever..

My money is on Fitch in this fight. I’m soooo tired of all the St. Pierre nut-huggers out there.
Ex.) “The only person who can beat GSP is another GSP!!!”
Stuff like that drives me nuts. Hopefully Fitch will put an end to all of this homo erotic GSP talk on all of the MMA sites. I’m predicting Fitch via split decision. It’s gonna be a brawl on the ground. Fitch will take down GSP. I guarantee that. I would bet everything that I have that Fitch will do it sucessfully, multiple times. The only question is if he can prevent himself from getting caught in a triangle, oma plata, kimura, arm bar, etc. Most likely the Triangle Choke though…

No way that Fitch takes GSP down. Fitch doesn’t have explosive takedowns; he tries to muscle you down. Nobody can muscle GSP to the ground at welterweight. I think Koscheck has a much better chance at beating GSP in a rematch than Fitch ever will.

Fitch would be lucky to get 1 take down, but multiple times,LOL. I would go as far as saying GSP will be doing all the taking down. Kos got a VERY RARE take down against GSP,but he is fast and explosive, to bad for Fitch, he isn’t and he WON’T get GSP down. Fitch will be to busy defending GSP’s take downs, to even think of taking him down. Don’t go by how Fitch took other opponents down (Hughes took all his opponents down and we seen how USLESS his wrestling was against the best take down defence in the business). No, Fitch won’t be able to prevent himself from getting caught in a sub (he gets caught in all his fights). The difference will be, he won’t be able to power out of it like he did against weaker opponents. Just like Hughes could power out of Lytle’s and BJ’s submissions, but he was fu@ked when GSP locked on a sub.

I have to agree with Scott and Phil Baloni. I really like GSP as a fighter. He’s one of my favorites, but it’s like they put a cutout of GSP with an electronic robotic voice recording. It’s always the same answers with him. I’m pretty sure his sports physciatrist tells him to repeat that in his mind to pump himself up. But it gets old for all the interviews. " I am in the best shape of my life. This was the best trainging camp i’ve ever had. Losing to matt serra was the best thing that ever happened to me. " You will be hearing these quotes more and more the closer we get to his fight. Anyways, GSP late 2nd round ref stoppage. For his 1st title defense.

lol he’s prob just saying that cause he doesn’t give a shit about the interview. i could be wrong, but if i’m training for something and i got asked everyday these questions i’d prob say the same shit as well. Like look what happend when he said what was on his mind after the first serra fight. he said he wasn’t there mentally and he shouldn’t have taken the fight, and some other stuff. and Serra lost his shit and it turned into this huge deal. I’m sure he has thoughts on Penn and other shit, but he prob doesn’t feel like getting it tossed back in his face.

Well if you haven’t noticed GSP DOES seem to be in better shape in every fight and he has DESTROYED all the guys he said he would destroy. He never said he was in the best shape of his life when he fought Serra 1 and he never said he would destroy him ,so he doesn’t say the same thing every time. He just says the truth. Losing to Serra, WAS the best thing that ever happened to him. GSP is ALL ABOUT improving his game in ALL areas, so when he says he is faster, stronger, mentally stronger, more fit and had a better camp, he is simply stating the truth. Lastly, how do you think you would come across speaking in a FOREIGN language? Wouldn’t be quite the same now, would it.

Just laying of for a bit, i check in everyday but havent commented in a while. All the sh*t talking from the Sherk/BJ fight must have worn me out. And to “TrueMMAwhatever” dude, it took Georges almost 3 rounds just to take BJ down and be consistent against BJ for two consecutive minutes, and against a empty gas tanked BJ, I dont se him being effective against BJ for at least 2-3 rounds and by then it will be too late. Not like last time where 2-3 rounds in was perfect timing to STEAL a win with sime hugging and holding. But yea, the guy that went to the hospital last time will be doing all the smashing im sure bro. That Matt Serra fight has got the GSP fans in a frenzy like it was Hickson Gracie or something, the dudes the smallest 170 lb fighter on the planet, a 155er really, so congrats on the W but BJ beat that kid almost a decade ago and while it did take all 3 rounds to get the win, it took Georges just as long arguably (With a loss in there to, a loss, come on, to Matt Serra, you gotta be kidding me!!). George and Shonnie are like the only guys to ever lose to that midget, disgraceful to the elite. BJ BJ BJ!!!

Now that you mentioned losses, that reminds me of a guy who lost back to back last time he was at WW and he actually thinks he is going to take the WW and the MW belts, LOL. Your right BJ did have a close fight that went to a decision with Serra and BJ was himself (GSP wasn’t and he proved it in the rematch),that is disgraceful, after we seen GSP MOE him over like he was an amature. That’s to be expected though, because GSP rolled through Hughes and Sherk, where as BJ got POUNDED OUT by Hughes and took 3 rounds (not to mention got rocked buy Sherk, lol)to finish him. I hope they have this fight on NYE, that way you won’t have to buy a turkey for New Years dinner, you will be too full from all the crow you will be eating on the 1st.

Yea, just like your predictions in that Sherk fight huh, and the Stevenson fight, i guess that makes you 0-2 when it comes to BJ Penn huh bro. And yea, he lost 2 in a row at WW, the only 2 hes lost at WW, wow, the same amount as GSP at WW huh? And when it comes to MLWT, you should talk when he actually loses at MLWT man, the guys way under matched and 2-0 at MLWT against 2 Gracies, GSP has never faught a Gracie let alone 2 let alone got a W against one of them, and at a higher weight class LoL, come on dude, there isnt even a comparison, thats like GSP going up to LTHT and beating someone thats undefeated and another guy thats a legend. GSP wouldnt even dream of moving up 2 weight classes while BJ has already moved up 3 becoming champion in 2 of them and still undefeated at the last which is also the highest weight clas hes jumped to and doing all of this while out of shape, dude, come on!!! And i just gotta laugh “HA” are you kiding me, BJ was what, 4 fights into his career at the point he faught a much younger Matt Serra, while GSP was what, 16-17 fights into his career and a champion?? How can you compare the two the way you do??? And again, at least BJ didnt actually lose to him LoL. Yea its nice for a nat 170er to beat down nat 155ers all day, SHerk, Serra etc BJ is 155er that GSP cant handle NOW, but its no big deal bro, only like 3% of the fighters in the world can ya know. Well i guess you dont know, but you will. Love ya Gord, nice to get back into the flow of things with you after a little break for both of us huh? It looks like the New Years UFC we can settle this, by Jan for sure i hope huh!!?? Hey, I’m not 0-2 when it comes to BJ, I picked the 3 LOSSES he had shortly before that and I was just going with the odds. Your right BJ only has 2 losses at WW (just like GSP). Does GSP ONLY have 3 fights at WW like BJ?LOL. Only 2 losses doesn’t sound so good when you only had 3 fights,LOL. Good to see your back buddy.

True that. Lucky for him that onewin at WTWT made him a champion over the “Greatest Welterweight of all time” (according to the UFC) in his prime, in one round. – I was thinking about this earlier: Yea GSP finished Serra and Sherk faster than Penn did, no doubt. But Joe Lauzon beat Pulver fster than BJ and BJ got two tries at Pulver (niether of the times was faster than Lauson) So does that make Lauzon better than Penn also by your math??? GSP is going down. (and NO, not like in a smashing, beat down, hella destroyd, easy for BJ kind of way) IN A WAR! Im stoked im getting to watch this era of sports!! I missed Ali, was too young for the Lakers/Celtics eras, but im here for these amazing times with MMA. And id also like to add a “BJ BJ BJ!!!”

Well I see that both GSP and Penn has improved since they last fought, so I will have to say GSP would smash Penn once again. Penn still needs to prove himself in my eyes. So he wooped on Stevenson, And all I saw in the Sherk fight is that his standup got better. Enough to beat GSP, ya right. GSP would destroy Penn even worse then he’s going to destroy Fitch.

Who cares about what a fighter says in an interview. If what is said in the interview had anything to do with fighting than Melvin Guillard and Josh Koscheck would be the fan favs instead of the horses ass after everyone of their fights, win or lose.
If you really care about what a fighter says to hype up a fight than you should stick to WWE, and sport your “The Rock” shirt at the next Brock Lesnar fight.

i can understand why people are picking gsp to win (me too), but to question fitch’s resume or wether he deserves a title shot is insane!
by b.w on Jul 15, 2008 11:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
the only way fitch to win this fight is use his best skill w/c is wrestling, but too bad for fitch coz GSP will out wrestle him
by mad_drummer on Jul 15, 2008 11:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
agreed. no way is fitch taking down GSP. 2 rnd tko
and then he is going to make BJ look like a little kid on

OJR, you know they interview everyone’s ‘friend’. Rampage and Forest for the last ppv. I don’t think you have much there…also, GSP should have this no prob. Fitch is a good fighter, but the is the worst match up out there for him. (probably for most guys)
by Amos on Jul 15, 2008 12:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why everybody counts fitch out?!?! I say this is an even matchup, Their wrestling is exellent. I think it will probably stay on the feet and fitch being a lil’ bit taller might help him.

There’s no one in MMA who can make BJ Penn look like a little kid. Anyone noticing how NOBODY wants to fight Machida right now, but BJ fought and damn near beat him at 205?
Now that Penn is at the top of his game, he is the one guy that can beat GSP even when GSP has a great fight. I wouldn’t be so crazy as to guarantee a Penn victory, it would be the toughest possible match up for him as well (at 170). But it is THE fight in MMA at the moment. It’s one for the ages and both fighters know that their legacy is on the line with this one.
It will be a back and forth war, with Penn getting a shocking third round sub, IMO. If you don’t realize that BJ poses a major threat to GSP’s dominance then you are not paying close enough attention to reality.

Nobody can make bj look like a kid!
Gsp is the man too! FItch is a really strong contender and he for sure deserves his title shot! it will be a good fight.
Gsp is pure class! thats for sure.

GSP is getting all of this love for his past three performances like he has improved tremendously…I disagree. He beat a very green and still one dimensional Kos who lacks effective BJJ. He smoked a washed up Matt Hughes, who still lacks effective BJJ and beat a very outsized Matt Serra who should be a LW. Fitch is the closet thing to a pure MMA fighter that GSP will face until he faces BJ Penn..which I might add GSP lost a SPD, IMO. Fitch can beat him standing and on the ground. All of this GSP best P4P fighter talk will be laid to rest with him getting smashed and tapping.

Who said GSP was getting all this love for his last three fights? He has been getting love since way back in his TKO days. Just Americans don’t like him because he’s not from there. Also on a side note when someone doesn’t win a fight they lose, not loose. I haven’t seen anyone get that spelling right on here ever.

Everyone in all the forums I’ve posted in are getting there jollies off over GSP because he’s improved since his loss to Matt Serra. I don’t see it. He’s been fed hand selected opponents much like Liddell was fed grapplers during his LHW reign.
by xxbaxx816 on Jul 16, 2008 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You’re a tool. Koscheck was a top 4 UFC WW at the time of the fight (the top 4 being the champ (Serra), Hughes, and GSP himself). Who else could he have fought that’s not a grappler? Diego, Fitch, and Karo are all grapplers. Alves wasn’t worthy at the time. And then he took the Hughes fight on short notice to replace Serra, instead of sitting out or getting fed a can.
by Pat on Jul 16, 2008 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry, Pat but you sound like a noob. Just because Koscheck was in the top 4 doesn’t mean he possessed BJJ or is very well rounded. GSP hasn’t fought anybody with strong BJJ in a while. Matt Serra doesn’t count because he was greatly outsized and GSP’s BJJ could counter it for that fact. Hughes and Kos both can’t do ish off of their backs.
by xxbaxx816 on Jul 16, 2008 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You should ask yourself one question, why aren’t these 3 fighters (Kos Hughes serra),getting STEAMROLLED by anyone else if they are as green, washed up and outsized as you say they are? It is pretty obvious that GSP has improved tremendously and he seems to improve every fight.

Im prepared to bet some serious money that this will be a fight of the year nominee.
These two dogs are gonna go at it, it’ll have a bit of eveything, great kickboxing, technical explosive wrestling, slick submission flows, from two of the most mentally strong athletes in the fight game.
Even if every other fight on UFC 87 sucked I would still buy this PPV just for this fight.
by rhys on Jul 16, 2008 3:05 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Fitch was taken down pretty easily by Roan Carneiro when they fought… For that reason I think GSP will be able to get him on his back… From there we’ll see what Fitch’s ground game offers in return.
GSP always seems to do well against guys he is scared of (or respects heavily) so I can see him turning up the volume on this fight and winning in impressive fashion.
Jon Fitch is NO joke at all… I agree that he is GSP toughest match up to date, but I still think Koscheck is the wildcard in this whole equation. Josh annihilated Chris Lytle and is starting to show effective use of his outstanding wrestling. If he fought GSP again I think he would look to wrestle immediately.
