Do you want to be a fucking fighter?

Quoteworthy:
"I'm looking for a well-rounded athletic fighter, but the most important thing to me is record. It's very frustrating in my job. I don't look for victims. I pride myself in making competitive matchups.... I don't care what happens in the gym. Lots of people do well in the gym. Going in the cage is a completely different thing, so I want to know how many fights do you have and who did you fight.... Did he beat up a bunch of guys who, this was their first fight? ... or did he beat up a bunch of guys who had multiple fights and this much experience?... (In early MMA) if you had somebody who didn't understand jiu-jitsu, you could beat them without being much of an athlete," Silva said. "Nowadays, everybody knows. There's no secret techniques. People know, and they cross-train. Being an athlete quite often is what makes the difference."
UFC matchmaker and vice president of talent relations, Joe Silva, on how to become a UFC fighter. Aspiring competitors take note. It isn't all about signing autographs and banging broads.

I really want to compete in the octagon, but I’m afraid of the long-term effects or damage that this sport could have on me. Like brain damage for example. Did you know that a single punche to the face with the magnitude of let’s say Serra, could cause my skull to recoil so fast and that will make my brain slosh in cerebral fluid and hit the back of my skull, then bounce back to the front of my skull, causing multiple trauma. I wouldn’t want that happenin’ to me…Daym!

I think for the most part, he does a good job and gies us good competitive fights..but fights like Cote vs Almeida shouldnt be happening this day in age..especially being considered a #1 contender match..1 dimensional vs 1 dimensional only works now if they are both the same “dimension”. in my opinion, which means nothing..oh well

I dont know Linx, i dont see either chuck or Rashad being one dimensional..Rashad can strike, chuck can wrestle…i dont see this fight being boring because neither of them are willing to engage (like the Cote/Almeida fight).. basically Rashad being undefeated earned him a shot at a big name, i think it was a spur of the moment thing when they set it up last time before chuck got hurt, now i think they just feel like they should go through with it anyway. If Shogun was coming off a win it would be him vs Chuck or Rashad I imagine

Joe Silva made a valid point. I still will question how they pick UFC fighters..who are contenders for the title. How the TUF guys..get special treatment. How a more deserving fighter gets bumped, because he less marketable..or doesn’t speak english. My wish is the that UFC brass.. give title shots to the most deserving fighter, regardless of MMA politics. Have a Anderson Silva type consistent title defense from all champs throughout the year. Keep current Champs off the TUF show. Stop BS’ing us fans.. we are not that retarted.

Valid points all.
But its obvious that MMA is still a bottom line business and you are going to get golden boys pushed ahead of less charismatic fighters.

The problem is, the more deserving fighter is an opinion. I don’t like immediate rematches. I think Forrest should fight Chuck if he gets by Rashad. Rampage should face Wandy for the next crack at the title. Everybody keeps saying Machida but in reality he beat a fighter who had a total of 4 fights and beat a very washed up Tito! Big deal! That’s my opinion but how do you know who really deserves it?
by Robert on Jul 11, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You select a panel of well informed and respect MMA people. Lay out the facts..
If I was on this panel.. With all the mixed reviews following the Page vs Forrest fight. An immediate rematch is needed.
Chuck after loosing in a non competitive fashion to Page and then dropping a decision to Jardine..following with a decision win over Wandy..now set up to face Rashad.
If you was to beat Rashad..have him fight one top tier LHW to then recieve a title shot.
I would like to see Chuck fight Lyoto Machida..but he and Forrest have shown no intrest in fighting him. Now wher does that leave us?? hummm…
The UFC is placing 2 of the top LHW contenders against non-contenders in their next match.
Once Shogun was unable to face Chuck. Chuck should of been giving an opponent that can beat him.. Such as a Lyoto..or Thiago Silva/ or even Brandon Vera. No.. the ufc gives him the easiest road back to a title shot. Just for the $$ value he has in a title fight picture.
To summarize : Page automatic rematch.
Then Lyoto is next in line / or when Chuck beats Rashad.. have him face Lyoto to decide who is next in line for a shot the UFC LHW gold.
by PhilQNY on Jul 11, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Phil: I completely Agree! Unfortunately Machida has already officially been screwed out of a fight because yesterday his manager gave an interview in which he stated that the UFC is saying Machida needs 1 more win before fighting for the title and the UFC has booked him to fight someone in October but they wont disclose who. A good friend friend of mine that occasionally gets a few inside scoops (living in Vegas) has heard that it will be Machida vs. THiago Silva.
This means that Wanderlei will fight Rampage and Chuck will get 1st crack at Forrests title as long as he can beat an over rated Rashad.
I dont like it as much as you, but I am afraid this is the reality. once again, the hardcore fans get screwed over again so that the UFC can appeal to the casual TUF nuthugger fans! Its SAD!, but atleast we will get some good match ups out of it, but Chuck does not deserve to fight for the title win or loose!
by john on Jul 11, 2008 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Again I think it’s a matter of opinion. Chuck knocks out Tito in a very noncompetitive fight last December. Machida beats Tito but almost gets caught in a submission in the process. Chuck beats Wandy in a 3 round war and Machida beats a fighter with a total of 4 fights. Rampage lost the fight in IMO, let him work his way back. Give Chuck another crack at the crown that he held for so long. I don’t see how that is that unfair. If they wanted to give Chuck an easy road back to the title why did he fight Wandy? And then have a scheduled fight with Shogun? Not exactly an easy road. I actually don’t watch the TUF show if that’s what you are saying about me. I just love MMA and I think Forrest vs Chuck and Wandy vs Rampage is not that way off. Your thoughts?
by Robert on Jul 11, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
On the button with that point, and I also think Chuck and Rashad is going to be a good fight. Everyone is always saying that Chuck is only a counter striker, thats b.s. He will counter strike but he sees an opening he brings it to whom ever his fighting, he will not let Rashad just sit back and pick his spots.
by Rubberman on Jul 11, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I still don’t quite understand how a fighter can turn down fights. I mean, Joe Silva should say, “Your next fight is a going to be against……” And you either say yes to it, or you don’t get a fight and a paycheck.
by chefdaddy on Jul 11, 2008 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ive always heard that chuck never even asked who he was fighting, just when. i have been all over this site saying that i think machida deserves it over chuck, but when i sit back and think about it, didnt chuck make 7 title defenses all together? 2 against randy, 2 against babalu, 2 against jacob (when he could still fight and 1 against gumby. im probably wrong on 1 of these, but thats pretty damn impresssive. im not a big chuck fan, but 7 defenses is unheard of in todays mma world. and it wasnt all against lesser competition like hugheses. and with consecutive wins over wandi and rashad (yet) i think im starting to change my mind on deserves what.
by b.w on Jul 12, 2008 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dana said the winner of Bisping vs Rashad gets put into the top 5. Wandy is already in the top 5, Chuck beats him and if he beats Rashad(tougher fight for Chuck then people think) WHY NOT GIVE HIM A TITLE SHOT. Machida is a good, hard to beat fighter, BUT who has beaten thats in the same class as Wandy?
by Robert on Jul 12, 2008 7:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jon Fitch is a prime example. He was going to be o TUF but got dumpted! And had to fight his way to the top with a 8-0 record while cote’s record is 5-4 and he is a title contender

I say what about the systems where you do not really have any full contact tourneys or any compititions at all, what if there is a guy that is a great fighter and he knows he is good from everyday life situations or from sparing with friends in other systems that do have full contact tourneys. Say buddy takes wing chun or kali or Krav Maga os some forms of Karate, Kung fu, Capoeira what ever; say buddy is confident and experience to know he can give an take a beating and has enough pride to suck it up and go out there and bang it out till the end no matter what happens. I think it would make the sport more interesting and exciting to see more martial arts systems compete Id be like “wow look at this guy hes studied shaolin kung fu for 3-4 and has been training some BJJ”, I think that would increase the popularity, I know for a fact that if there was a guy that is a wing chun practition fighting on UFC on the next payperview I would be calling all my buddies from my wing chun class and would be ordering it for sure.
by Tyson Harris on Jul 12, 2008 1:03 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That’s kind of how the UFC started out, system versus system, to see which one was better. (They were put on by the Gracie’s to prove BJJ was better, as well.) Eventually, it was found that no ONE style was the best, but rather taking the best things from each one made for a more formidable fighter. In general, BJJ, Thai kickboxing, boxing and wrestling are the main ones fighters focus on.

All the UFC does is put Chuck in against grapplers with limited striking ability. I’m sick of it. I give him credit for the win against Silva but that’s about it. He will beat lay and pray evans easily and get his title shot.

hey bighoss, since when was Randy Couture limited at anything.
I just hope shogun comes back in top shape. Everyone is saying Evans is a bum, but I thought he fought forrest( I’m not sure). They said the same thing about Jardine. My problem with the UFC is they didn’t let Rampage defend the belt enough. He went 10 month without fighting and the ring rust was evident. No champion should ever go 10 months without fighting, It isn’t fair to the fans or the other fighters. Especially when the Ufc labels LHW the most hotly contested division. If it is that hotly contested don’t make us wait 10 months for a title fight.
by CLETIS on Jul 13, 2008 2:58 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Got a little mixed up on Sugar Evans past,He didn’t fight Forrest, he beat Jardine who beat forrest, and had a draw with Tito. I know Tito doesn’t strike fear into a lot of fighters anymore but He has beaten some quality fighters and I dont remember him losing to any bums. I don’t really know how good the guy Evans is, but he should be better than he’s ever been. Training and experience go a long way. I mean Who thought a couple years ago that Forrest would ever be champion. I always liked him as a fighter but I had no idea he could take it to Rampage like he did. I think Rampage is one of the best fighters out there. We need to give Rashad a chance, and if he beats chuck he deserves a shot at the title. If chuck beats him, give him a shot. Everyones dissin on Chuck like they already forgot he beat Wandy. I know Rampage has beaten him two times. but Wandy beat rampage two times. different styles produce different outcomes.
