Round two: Vera working some leg kicks. Andy charges in and Vera stands his ground. They're against the cage now. Vera with another nice takedown and he has Andy's back. He's landing punches from there. Andy spins around, but Vera stays on top. Now in a north south and Vera stands. Andy is up as well. Lazy kicks from Andy and he charges in. Vera makes him pay with a right hand. Nice body kick from Andy. Nice jabs from Vera. They're doing a lot of dancing and the crowd comes in with the boos. They're clinched again now. Nice head kick from Vera as they push out. He grabs for a choke, but lets it go. Nice jab from Andy. Another high kick from Vera. Vera throws a one two that misses and follows up with a hard leg kick as the round ends. I give it to Vera 10-9 because of the takedown and kicks. Andy is putting up a fight though. It's close with not a lot of action.
Round three: Nice uppercut from Vera to start the round. Andy throws some more lazy kicks, and then charges and they're clinched again. Some lazy knees from both fighters now. Vera picking up the pace with his now. The ref steps in and separates them. Andy charges again and they're right back into the clinch. A nice couple uppercuts from Andy. Andy looks for a takedown and Vera pushes away and they separate. Almost immediately back to the clinch and Vera is landing some big knees from here. -end-
Frank Edgar vs. Hermes Franca (155-pound limit)
Round one: Hermes kicks and Edgar gets an immediate takedown. Edgar stands and looks for some punches and gets right back to guard. Edgar is maintaining the top and landing punches while standing. Hermes closes the guard now and is trying to control him from the bottom, but Edgar pushes out and stands again. He lands a few kicks and throws a punch and is right back in his guard. Edgar is looking good so far. Hermes looks for an armbar out of no where. It looks like he has it deep, but Edgar escapes somehow. Right back into Hermes' guard landing punches. Nice up kick from Hermes and they're standing. They both land some strikes and Edgar gets another takedown. Edgar keeps landing shots and it looks like he's looking for side control, but goes right back to the guard. The round ends in that position and I give that round to Edgar 10-9.
Round two: Nice leg kick from Hermes. Edgar returns one of his own. Again from Hermes and Edgar charges with some punches. Hermes looks for another kick and Edgar secures the takedown again. He's throwing punches from here. Good ground and pound from Edgar. 4 or 5 unanswered lefts from Edgar and Hermes covers up. Edgar stands and lands a hard kick. Right back to his guard. Edgar takes Hermes' back momentarily, but goes right back to guard. Hermes appears to being trying to set up some submission attempts, but Edgar is controlling the fight. They get back to their feet and Edgar throws a nice high kick then gets another takedown. The round ends with some more ground and pound from Edgar. Definitely his round.
Round three: Hermes lands a nice overhand right and an upperctu, but Edgar shrugs it off. Hermes lands a big knee now. He's coming out aggressive. He throws another knee and Edgar turns it into a takedown. He takes the top and is in Hermes' guard. Hermes spins and stands and they're up. Both guys exchange kciks and Edgar gets another takedown. These takedowns and his control from the top are winning him this fight. Edgar has him pinned against the cage now and Hermes spins and stands. Edgar with an immediate knee and takedown. He's landing knees to the body from the ground. He has Herme's back, but Hermes stands back up. Again Edgar stays on him and gets the takedown. 90 percent of this fight has been Edgar on top on the ground. Hermes with a wild roll and escape attempt, but Edgar stays on him and keeps the top position. Hermes stands again and Edgar lands a kick. Hermes with a wild three punch combo and a big knee. Edgar looks stunned, but he shoots and gets a takedown. He holds on there for the last 10 seconds and the fight is over. Even with the early and late flurries from Hermes, I still give this round to Edgar on control and numerous takedowns.
Final result: Frank Edgar defeats Hermes Franca by unanimous decision.
-end-
Cain Velasquez vs. Jake O'Brien (265-pound limit)
Round one: Both guys land jabs and they clinch and go right to the ground. Cain getts on top and has side control. He's landing punches from there. Jake tries to maneuver out, but Cain maintains side control after briefly going to a north south. Cain traps his arm now and is landing a lot of shots. Jake can't get out Cain is landing punch after punch. The ref finally steps in and stops the fight. Jake was trying to get out, but it was clear it wasn't happening and the ref had to stop it.
Final result:Cain Velasquez defeats Jake O'Brien by TKO in the first round.
-end-
Anthony Johnson vs. Kevin Burns (170-pound limit)
Round one: Leg kick from Johnson. Burns answers with a right hand. Burns charges and there's a small exchange then a tie up. Both guys throw knees as they move around the cage in the clinch. Burns punches out and the separate. Jab from Johnson, but Burns lands a nice combo. Nice body kick from Burns, but Johnson answers with a leg kcik of his own. Another leg kick from Johnson. The ref said it was low, and it definitely was. Burns says he's good and they start fight back up. Big slam from Johnson!!! He's in Burns' guard now and Burns is controlling him nicely. Nice left hand from Johnson. Johnsons not doing much to improve his position, but he's being active now with punches. A couple elbows from Johnson and the ref steps in and stands them up. Johnson lands a kick and then a nice combination. Burns clinches and throws a few knees as the bell rings. Close round, but I'll give it to Johnson because of the takedown and activity.
Round two: Nice exchange and a leg kcik from Burns. Johnson lands a huge Knee!!!! He follows up with a big combo that sends Burns flying to the cage. Johnson charges with a flying knee and lands on the chest of Burns. Burns grabs him and is holding on for dear life. He looks to have recovered now, but Johnson is still landing big punches and leg kicks. Burns throws a leg kcik now and eats a big left. Both guys are working the jabs now. Burns keeps pushing the action, but keeps getting hit and kicked. Big knee to the body now for Johnson and Burns answers with a high kick that lands right on the money. Johnson now grabs and then gets a takedown. Both guys look to be recovering a little bit as Burns has Johnson in full guard. Johnson stands and lands a elbow and punch combo, then right back in guard. The ref stands them up with about 20 seconds left in the round. After a small exchange, the round ends with Johnson getting another takedown. If he didn't already have the round won, that secured it for him. Burns is holding his own though. Decent fight so far.
Round three: Big leg kick from both guys. Johsnon works the jab. But Burns keeps coming forward, landing punches of his own and kicks. Johnson shoots and scoops Burns up for another takedown. Right back into Burns' full guard and again not much happening from here. They get stood up again and right away Johnson shoots and gets another easy takedown. Nice palms strikes from Burns on the bottom. Again they get stood up. Big combo from Johnson but Burns steps forward and lands a big combo that scrapes Johnson's eye badly. Johnson immediately goes down and Burns looks confused. He pounces and the ref jumps in and waves the fight off. Johnson immediately complains, saying his eye was poked and that he wasn't knocked out, but the fight has already been stopped. Controversy, but it's over.
Final result: Kevin Burns defeats Anthony Johnson by TKO at 3:35 of Round 3
-end-
Jesse Taylor vs. CB Dollaway (185-pound limit)
Round one: Gloves tough and we're under way. Jesse shoots and CB stuffs. Jesse has CB against the cage. Sporadic knees and punches from Jesse. Knee from CB. CB tosses Jesse for a takedown, but Jesse gets top position. CB gets back to his feet and throws a big illegal knee to Jesse while he was on the ground. The ref warms CB but does not take a point. Jesse says he doesn't need a break and they start right back up. CB gets a takedown and gets a brief full mount before Jesse spins and give him his back. CB is looking for a rear naked choke. Jesse spins out and works for a good position. He pins CB against the cage and starts raining down punches. He stands for a moment and CB takes advantage and gets a dominate position. Rogan calls it Peruvian Necktie. Whatever it was, it was nasty and Jesse had to tap with a little more than a minute remaining.
Final result: CB Dollaway defeats Jesse Taylor by submission (choke) at 3:58 of Round 1

great, great card!!! everyone should tivo this and order the Afflication ppv to support mma. A year ago this would have never happened. Competition does make things better!!!

No thanks.
Sure, competition is great. But, if all of the best fighters fought in one organization, it would make things so much better. I don’t want to support a company that’s using the WAMMA belt. The last thing MMA needs is to turn into boxing.
I’ll watch the Fedor fight and the AA/Rothwell fight the next day online. Otherwise, the card is full of has-beens and mismatches.

nog is a so-called heavyweight champ!!! for starters, nobody ever beat barnett for the ufc belt, and he was only 24 yrs. old, lol. randy quit them holding the paper belt that barnett left behind, so nog’s belt is the 2x paper belt. and we all know where nog stands against fedor!
by deuce 4 on Jul 20, 2008 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the problem is that the ufc can not and will not hire every fighter in the world that deserves to fight in there.it would be great if they all fought for one promotion but guess what it will never happen, and not just because of the fighters the ufc is to blame for that too.the only way to make this a legit sport is to have outside rankings and determine a true world champ(or cross promote) and that is what wamma is trying to do.
by roy on Jul 10, 2008 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you said it well the ufc can not and it will not, but not only that they keep people for personal reasons out, nick diaz is one big example. as for the points they talked about, the under card is weak, but did you see the finaly of the last ultimate fighter or the last ufc whith ranpage and forest, if ufc remains as the only one on the top, you already saw mma become like boxing, shit you just saw the first championship fight that i remember, that was fix! forest dosent stand a chance if he’s not dana’s pet.

Daily News:
Anderson Silva’s Next title defense has been CONFIRMED and it will be against Okami. They hope its at UFC 88, but we wont know until we see how the fight with Irvin unfolds.
Looks like UFC 91 will take place in Portland!

More News:
The UK will soon be getting its own UFC ultimate figher series with Bisping as one coach.
Any guesses for the other? The Machine lol.

Oh yeah, I’d love Silva/Okami at UFC 88. Lets keep the division moving along. I love Anderson Silva and the fact that he is a real fighter and wants to compete at the highest level as often as possible.
QUICK QUESTION: If this is true, what would be the main event, Liddell/Evans or the title fight, Silva/Okami?
by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A co main event with it ending with Silva Okami
by Smokes on Jul 10, 2008 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Silva/Okami. Its a title with the #1 p4p.
by James S on Jul 10, 2008 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If real life were a video game, this would be just some kinda bonus stage for Silva. Okami wouldn’t stand a chance. The reason Okami is being fed to Silva is just to say that Silva has legitly “cleaned out” the division. This will just be a walk in the park for the Spider…
John, I was just wonderin’ about your comment where you said that the only legitimate contender right now to battle Fedor would be Barnett. I mean, I’m thinkin’ that Barnett wouldn’t stand a chance because he was KO’d by Rizzo and submitted by Cro-Cop, both far lesser fighters than Fedor. Could you enlighten me on this one please?
by TheNegation on Jul 11, 2008 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know what to do… I have never seen Fedor fight live before, other than that AA is becoming a boxer and the rest couldn’t cut it in the UFC…. Your thoughts?
by Robert on Jul 10, 2008 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
who could not cut it in the ufc?barnett who destroyed randy, lindland, sylvia, lil nog, fedor, sorbral please name witch ones could not cut it in the ufc.

By all means I’m not Pride vs UFC or UFC VS anybody… I love MMA and Affliction is the reason why WE have 2 great cards in one night. That being said…Sylvia’s contract was not going to be renewed to boring(1), AA turned into a boring snoze fest fighter, his fight with Werdum was the dullest fight I have ever seen!! Altough I still think he is a top 5 Heavy but UFC put him on the shelf then on the undercard because he got to you guessed it boring(2) Sorbral(3) lost 2 out of 3. Barnett good fighter. I have a feeling I will get the ithch and watch both at the last minute. Top Tier fighters who get paid alot of money need to bring the goods for the fans… Cro Cop anyone!!!!!!!

Edgar vs France has fight of the nite written all over it. Contrasting styles and two guys that like to go at it. Should be a good one.

Franca by submission early, Edgar coming off a loss is going to resort to his bread and butter and go for the takedowns, Franca submits him off his back, probably by triangle.

185 lbs.: Jesse Taylor (6-2) vs. CB Dollaway (6-1).
Who will lay on who longer?
I can’t wait!
Jesse Taylor just needs to have practiced an armbar for 3 months and he will win.

I dont remember a UFC event where I did not know so many of the names on the undercard!
Bobby O’shea: I also think that Edgar/Franca can very well end up being the fight of the night
by john on Jul 10, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It really doesn’t have much competition. I doubt the bonuses will be $60k apiece this time. I’m actually picking a pair of newcomers to be fight of the night.
Markham/Farber is Farber keeps it standing and Hart/Gugerty has potential to be exciting as well.
I mentioned in another thread, but where do you guys see the Edgar/Franca fight taking place? Mostly on the feet, or mostly with Edgar going for takedowns? I think Edgar will chose to stand at first to avoid Hermes’ groundgame but will eventually get cought with one of those clubbing right hooks that Hermes swings from his ankles.
by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
VM: I think Hermes wont mind standing with Edgar. In the stand up, Iw ould give the power advantage to Franca. U mentioned his clubbing hooks. As u kno he has some devestating knees as well. Sherk ate them, but not to many lightweights can eat those knees with out getting KO.
I think it will be mostly a stand up war, but then again Hermes like to mix it up and is great at Jits, so who knows

The only classes I actually care about are my international Business and Marketing classes because they are part of my major. All my other classes, I just try to get by, and this site is a college kids DREAM
Also, I dont live on Cambpus, I commute, so in between classes, I have nothing to do other than hit up the school library and get my mma fix!

I dont think I will like any of these fights except the main event. I have a feeling Edgar-Franca fight they will nullify each other. Vera will dispose of Reese too quickly. Taylor and Dolloway..as someone said earlier, who can lay on the longest? I hoping Velasquez will save the rest of this card with a brutal KO over Obrien.

I agree john, Edgar and Franca is going to be a Hell of a fight. The Silva Irvin fight is going to be too one sided to be a good fight. Anderson will win this fight in a dominant fashion either submission or a stoppage in the first or second round unless Irvin pulls out a miracle. Unless Anderson gets caught (Is highly unlikely) he wins this fight and it’s not even going to be close.

my picks are….
siva (how can i pick against a guy this good?)
vera (should be a great 205er hope he doesn’t prove me wrong)
franka(hard to pick this one but franka’s jits is damn good)
o brian (uggghhhh boring but he does know how to win)
johnson(crazy hand speed hits hard good sprawl)
and cb (uggghhhh lay in prays better than drunky drunk drunk.)
don’t know the guys on the undercard to well. ya’ll might not care about my picks but it’s fun to look back to see what your wrong and right about. and if i’m wrong then thats ok haha and i know i will pick a few of these fights wrong.

dude how can yall not think irvin isnt gonna win by knees in the clinch or a triangle choke as the spider cant handle the irvin stand up and shoots the double leg…yall are all noobs for not calling this
ha j/k
but i would love to see irvin win
if sylvia wins then thats awesome to because hes a fav of mine
if he wins here and beats okami then he still has to beat cote and then probablly bisping before a monstrous gsp fight

Were you watching him getting owned by Terry Martin in the 1st round? That is why I cannot pick Irvin to win this fight. He won’t catch Anderson with any real quick bam knock outs. Anderson is pretty illusive constantly moving on his feet. Good free fight regardless.

i know u all r waiting to hear my picks so here i go-
giboo/blackburn = i pick giboo on a 5,000 bet
credeur/yarbrough = i got cale on a 7,500 bet
jt money/dollaway = i got dollaway on a 5,000 bet
johnson/burns = another rumble ko with 12,000 on the line
cain/jake obrian = my pick is blue balls o’brian with a 10,000 bet.
steroid franca/edgar = i got steroid boy on a 20,000 bet
vera/reese and silva/irvin are pointless to bet on so i will not bet.
my bookies odds r ridiculous and i would have to lay down way
too much just to get so little.
i wont bet on the underdogs either cause going up agianst silva and vera
r gauranteed losses. = money wasted.
i also have 2 parlay bets-
rumble/yarbrough/giboo with 15,000 put up
and
silva/o’brian/franca with 20,000 on the line.

The ref can only call what he see’s. It was out of view, and you can’t make a call like that based on a cry, even though it seemed like the right thing to do. Should have been a no-contest if not a DQ, if you ask me.

Comment on Johnson vs. Burns:
What is the point of a ref. warning a fighter not to poke another fighter in the eye, and then award him with a win for a fight he was losing after he incapicates the other fighter with an eye poke. Is cheating going to be condoned in the UFC. “F” it, just go back to the rules of UFC 1.
The referees should just take a point on the first infraction and disqualify on the second offense, otherwise no one will care what the referee says. These are supposed to be professionals. If you can’t controll your hands (4 times!) you should go back to the gym and practice closing your hands when you jab, not be rewarded for cheating!

I know it’s their first time out so I’ll cut em some slack. The camera angles feel way to much like boxing, and I love Mcarthy, but the dude looks lost. At the risk of sounding like a UFC hugger, they [UFC] really do put on a great show. Don’t crucify me just yet, I’m not talking about card vs card, just the actual production.

ChefDaddy: iI was thinking the same exact thing. Eventually Vera should and probably could cut down to middleweight. it will take some time because he needs to get accustomed to the 205 lb weight cut 1st because I have to believe that it affected his performance last night. He looked very sluggish! once he gets the weight cut to 205 down to a science, he should start working on cutting to middleweight were he could become a monster.

by JV on Jul 20, 2008 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think as long as machida is winning he won’t move up, but as soon as he (machida) looses he’ll move up and try to get the belt. Anderson is really respectful of his teammates, he will not go into machida’s territory as long as machida is being dominant. This thing DW said that he’d like to keep fighting at both mw and lhw is just hype unfortunately, as anderson already said the contrary.
by linx on Jul 20, 2008 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
jV and C-war: u guys are pretty knowledgable fans, which makes me not understand why you were giving me crap all week for trying to state the obvious which Anderson Silva proved last night: Irvin has NO BUSINEES being in the same cage as the spider. Anderson has had more fights at light heavyweight than he has had at middleweight and Irvin is barely a top 15 LHW fighter. Irvin would NEVER fight for a title in any division, while Silva could have a great chance at taking the LHW title if Machida wasnt in the title hunt already. LIke I said, it was a joke of a fight, a complete mismatch. I dont understand how so many regulars on this site, that know understand the fight game, even remotely thought that Irvin would have a chance with the Spider. Anderson was not a middleweight movin to LHW for the 1st time. He is a fighter who was a very goood LHW, dropped down to middleweight and became the most dominant middleweight fighter ever, and now moved back up to LHW. How did any of you honestly believe that it would be a fight! Another Dominating performance by the spider.
He didnt take any damage whatsoever, so we can all expect silva vs. Cote for the middleweight title at UFC 88 in Setember… Silva will pick Cote apart!

I’m thinking of guys that could beat Anderson Silva at 205. The only guys that come to mind are the Brazilian fighters…Wandy, Machida, Thiago Silva…Anderson Silva is on record saying he’s not gonna fight Machida.
Also…Brandon Vera…If you come to 205 like you did against Reese,I hope Anderson Silva eventually kicks your head in. I don’t care about weight cutting or being nervous to lose 3 in a row – you’re a professional fighter..and you looked like a b*tch. I was a huge fan of Vera…but the ‘truth’ about Vera…is that he’s all hype.

Vera seems to have “lost it”. Silva is the best P4P fighter in the world.

Silva is THE MAN! PERIOD! Though Irvin isn’t a top contender at 205 it was quite impressive to say the least. Watch out Forrest and any one else for that matter..

so what now? does that mean its cote vs anderson at 88? he will do the same again to cote and ko him quick one would think. theres nothing really left for 185 lbs unless wandy drop down.. silva is on a mean roll right now

Yup, silva vs. Cote will take pace at UFC 88 in September! I dont understand the guys on this site that want to see Anderson loose. What more can u ask for out of a UFC champion? He finishes everyone that gets into the Octagon with him. No one has even seen a 3rd round against him since he entered the UFC, yet people still hate on the man…I just dont get it. How many champions do u know, that fight this frequently while still remaining DOMINANT? He defended his title against Hendo in March. 4 months llater he moves up in weight on short notice and embarresses Irvin, then 2 months later he will drop back down to middleweight and defend his tite by picking patrik Cote apart! What more do u guys want out of a champion!
Thank GOd, that Silva doesnt speak Engish because if he did, he would be a coach on TUF for sure and it would hold up the title for 6 months! THis guys is probably the best champion that the UFC has ever had, yet there are still people on this site who hate on him, and root against him…. I ust dont get it!

Everybody loves a winner, bt everyone hates someone who wins too much. Example, everyone was happy when the Red Sox finally broke The Curse in ’04, but then they started spending tons of money to buy up the top players and keep winning the way the Yankees did, and now everyone hates the Sox.

I hope they tore Vera’s contract in half after that one, what a giant over-hyped, back peddling, fat hanging over elastic band, barely beating Reese Andy washed up greased up asian with less fighting ability then a dead cat under a car seat. With that said, Silva and Fedor are still the kings and Dana White can still suck my asshole for disrespecting Fedor. Irvin ate a big punch, Sylvia got choked out immediately and hopefully ended that moose shaped human beings career. What a fantastic Saturday everybody.

spider – eww that was as solid as a shot i’ve ever seen. it went snap right through his head like a speedbag. all bow down to the spider.
vera – after he won round 1 and part of round 2, it looked like he was just playing it safe. i’m glad to see him get a win but it would’ve been nice if he finished Andy. dude was ripe for a devastating finish.
franky edgar – lolol @ his strategy. TD. get up. TD. get up. TD
anthony johnson – so much for fighting Big Ant Nog. aww
meh, decent night of free fights. cheap thrills.

I think silva is an animal, but I am really starting to wonder if this shit is fixed. I mean come on 1 off balance punch to the mouth…..Currect me if i am wrong but havent his past knock outs since being in the ufc all been by fantastic combos, in my oppinon he didnt even hit him hard compared to how he hits when he is in a normal positin and not reaching and grabing someones foot. I dont know just seems too easy.
by jb on Jul 20, 2008 2:51 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Are you serious? That punch was right on the chin by the best striker in all of mma. Anyone woulda gone down from that. No one will ever beat Anderson Silva on the feet, he’s just in another league from everyone else.

jb, I don’t even know how to respond.
“his past knock outs since being in the ufc all been by fantastic combos” That’s because anderson is the best striker ever!!!
But you’re right, it was probably fixed, after the fight was over the doctors walked up to irvin and cut his face while he was on the ground to make it believable, irvin probably got paid mad cash for that :?

Anderson Silva is another league when compared to most of the fighters in all of MMA. I don’t understand why everyone keeps calling him the best p4p fighter in the world. IMO, he is THE BEST fighter in the world. Anyone disagree?

Haha.
I just can’t believe how hard it is to hit him and how easily he seems to hit others square on the button.
That said, Irvine didn’t seem to have much of a game plan after getting knocked down other than to cover up his face with a little peekaboo hole for Spider to feed him knuckle sandwiches. Sort of weird. He just buckled up and covered for dear life. Anyways, Spider vs Fedor would be awesome at 205. Fedor weighing in at 230, it would be easy for him.
by dave on Jul 20, 2008 4:36 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Silva would cut him up to be honest with you. I’m not even joking. The guy is insane! and yea, I saw Fedor’s hand speed tonight and him destroy Sylvia, quite impressive but it doesn’t even matter. Silva is just too f’n good.
by Anthony on Jul 20, 2008 5:02 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dude, silva is an amazing fighter, 1 of the best in the world, but lets be real, hOw can anyone expect the most dominant middleweight to beat the most dominant heavyweight? tHats just crazy talk and it woud never happen!
Do u guys really think Silva could beat Tim Sylvia? Doubt it! Is Siva better than Sylvia? absolutely….but there are weight casses for a reason and It would be silly to expect Silva to beat any of the top HW, that doesnt mmake him any less of a fighter, its just an unreasonable expectation. Silva could never beat:
sylvia
Fedor
Noguiera
Kongo
Alovski
Barnett
Weight classes are there for a reason. then why did Silva win last night? cause, he is A LHW who cuts to middlweight. He has had a vey successful career at LHW, but if you guys think he can start beating top hw’s than u guys are just crazy, especially the top dawg Fedor!

Wow, Anderson Silva stormed through Irvin with ridiculous ease. Made such light work of him, it was frightening how easy he made it look.
I kept drifting off to sleep while the rest of the card was on unfortunately. It gets shown live here on Setanta from 2am UK time so it’s hard not to. It wasnt til 4am when the main event was on. I miss the 9pm Sunday playback coverage on Bravo but for UFC 87, I think I’ll nap beforehand so I don’t snooze while it’s on. But luckily I woke up just in time to see Silva-Irvin and as Silva entered the ring, I didnt know whether he was shaking with nerves or was just so confident he thought he’d dance his way to the ring. Either way, he finished the fight in such comprehensive fashion. If you’d blinked, you’d have missed it. What a horrific cut that was under Irvin’s right eye. I really hope they get Anderson on a UK card soon. I’d love to see him fight live & in the flesh.
What was the rest of the card like? Good standard of fights? I’m going to try and watch Affliction on Bravo tonight. See what the competition’s like.

I don’t know who said Affliction highlights was going to be on Bravo tonight, but I think they’re wrong. Just checked the TV listings & no mention of it. Unless it’s a late scheduling change and it is on, I think it’s a shame. I was really hoping to see Fedor in action tonight.

Where are the fools that spent the entire last week attacking me for calling out the obvious, IRVIN has no BUsiness being in the same cage as the spider? But no, you all bashed me, and tried to idiotically convince me that Irvin was a worthy opponent. What a joke of a fight! thank God I ordered Affliction!
Big nIGHT OF BETTING FOr ME, I absolutely CRUSHED!
I only fight I lost all night was the Franca fight! Got my m,oney back that Forrest stole from me, and some!
Thanks god I ordered Affliction, because If I didnt and just sat in to watch that crappy UFN event, I would have been pissed!
All Hail King Fedor, best Heavyweight fighter EVER!!!!!!

Say what u guys want to about fighters, but can u please all stop with your idiotic theories about how Fedor and Silva’s fights are fixed? u sound really dumb and paranoid! They are both dominant and great fighters and last night they did what they always do….outclass there opponents. Because they make their fights look so easy, all it shows is how dominant they are as fighters, not that fights are fixed! So please stop with aLL THE STUPID THEORIES, U ARE CHEAPENING THE SPORT I LOVE!!!

I wouldn’t be too surprised now to see the UFC sign Fedor. Now that Lorenzo Fertitta is on board to try and grow the UFC brand internationally, there might be more motivation (and superior negotiating skill) to do so. Fedor’s contract situations are always murky. I may be wrong, but I don’t think that Fedor has a contract with Affliction specifically. In order to help penetrate internationally, I can see a scenario whereby Lorenzo decides to go for Fedor (sign him to a 3 fight contract) and have him fight Couture in his first fight. It seems to me that it would be a lot smarter (and cheaper) than having to counterprogram every time there is an Affliction card (if indeed there is another one). There is no doubt that Fedor is a great fighter. However, IMHO dominating Sylvia does not automatically make him the top P4P fighter. P4P fighter is an unproveable and nebulous concept anyways. On the other hand, perhaps the Fertiita’s realize that although Fedor is a great fighter (arguable one of the best) he is not really marketable and can’t sell PPVs? Interesting time to be a MMA fan.
by Muscle Dolphin on Jul 20, 2008 10:30 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dominating sylvia doesnt make him a top fighter! What makes h im a tp fighter is that he has dominated EVERYone he has ever faced! Syvia, Cro Cop (in his prime), nogueira twice, Hearing, Coleman (twice), Fujita, TK, Randleman…. Dominating everyone he has ever faced is what makes him a top fighter.
All that is left for him to prove is that he can dominate Couture, Barnett, and Arlovski, which Affliction will pprobably give us a chance to see. IMO the toughest opponent left for Fedor would be Barnett, then Arlovski and then Couture. i think he will beat Randy with ease! Both Arlovski and Barnett have a better chance against the Russian than Couture does!
Muscle Dolphin: I think that Fedor has 2 fights left on his deal with Affliction. I know for a fact that his brother Aleks signed a 3 fight contract with Affliction so I am pretty sure that Fedor has done the same! Fedor without a doubt will compete at Afflictions next 2 shows, the next 1 being in October and then Febuary, so the next time that the UFC will have a chance to try to sign him will be around March, but If Affliction keeps growing, I dont think that he will leave Affliction. As long as they keep growing from show to show, I expect to see him re-sign with Affliction!

I think the big gunz all performed last night for Affliction! I dont know how successful there event was last night, but I am pretty sure that the next event will be a much bigger success. Arlovski is a GOD in the eyes of millions of American fans. His fans were still loya to him through many boring fights against Werdum, cruz and O’brien. Now that all his fans know that the Pitbull of old is BACK, they will all be dying to see him compete at Afflictions next show. This will really help sell pay per views for Affliction next time around.
Also, Fedor isnt that famous in America, but after America learns about how he dominated a very tough Former UFC champion sylvia last night, they will all start becoming Fedor fans and it will help sell more pay per views for the next show.
I also expect Tito to sign with Affliction. Why in the world Tito has so many fans, I just dont understand. he is a bum, but he sells pay per views, as good as anyone. I think he will fight at Afflictions second show (probably against Babalu)and it will really help sell pay per views.
Also, If Couture wins his court case, he will fight Fedor in Afflictions 2nd show, that alone will sell Millions of pay per views. I realyl believe that Afliction has a great chance of surviving, last night was a pretty great start for a new companies 1st show.
My predictions for Affliction 2:
Fedor vs. Couture (main event for the Wamma title)
Barnett vs. Arlovski
Tito vs Babalu or Tito vs. Nogueira
I think Affliction wil be here to stay!

Fedor showed the world he is the best fighter on Earth and Anderson Silva proved that he could dominate the the 205 lb. division. I can’t wait to see Fedor run through Cotoure like a Mac Truck. I really have no interest in seeing Silva fight at 185 ever again. What the mma world deserves is a fight between Fedor and the Spider at 205.
