Tim Sylvia: No secrets planned for Fedor Emelianenko Affliction fight

tim sylvia
Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia offered a peak at his strategy for his upcoming fight against Fedor Emelianenko during a conference call on Thursday.

"I don¹t think my game plans have ever been much of a secret," he said. "Stand up and brawl, defend the takedowns at all costs and try to knock him out."

The former UFC heavyweight champion took questions about the event, Fedor, his back and the long-term future of the sport.

"I think Affliction has signed seven of the top heavyweights in the world," Sylvia said. "Three of us are former UFC champions. Fedor is on the card and he gets to fight a top 10 fighter."

But his Russian opponent might spur more debate than any other man in MMA. Some think he's the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Others think he's just an overrated PRIDE fighter.

"He's beaten everybody they've thrown in front of him," Sylvia said. "How could he be overrated?"

And, of course, it wouldn¹t be an interview with the Maine-iac without some talk about how he's the man the fans love to hate.

"It doesn¹t bother me like people think it does," he said. "I'm a fighter and I love to fight."

Fedor is gonna make him tap early!

I kind of want Timmy to pull of the upset tho, just to do Randy’s legs!

Fedor will re-fracture Big Dumb Tim’s arm. I just hope Big Dumb Tim doesn’t win, otherwise he will wear that goofy ass WAMMA belt everywhere he goes.

I am itching for this event to come! It couldnt come soon enough….I would fast forward my entire weekend to get closer to this event if I could, and us College kids LOVE our weekends! lol

Schedule: Saturday NIght: Enjoy Affliction
Sunday: MMA filled day with the UFN event from the night before and a Action Packed DREAM event….what more could u ask for?

The week after, we are even fortunate enough that EliteXC is giving us real fights, instead of freakshows.

Great time to be a fan!

“Try to knock him out”

To bad he didnt use that gameplan in most of his ufc fites. Like against Vera, he used the “look like im humping you against the fence” technique for three rounds

by Bobby O'shea on Jul 10, 2008 3:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really hope your meant “fights” not “fites”

by shaze on Jul 10, 2008 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Still, “hump him against the fence” would have been a truly awesome comment to make.

Timmy is a tough fight but those big long arms can be lazy in retreat. I suspect Fedor will win in the 3rd but his face will be mangled.

If Fedor wins – what next for him???? That is an invitation for someone to educate me.

Arlovski for sure. The Russian against the Belarussian. Either that or like a grizzly bear or something.

by DonnyG on Jul 10, 2008 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It will more than likely be Andrei but if Randy is ready to fight in time there is no doubt they would put Arlovski on wait until Randy got his chance to be eaten alive by Fedor.

by Smokes on Jul 10, 2008 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think so Smokes. As much as I respect your opinion, I’m thinkin’ that if Couture does lose, he’ll do so with arms swingin’. He’s old enough not to be eaten alive. The veteran still has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

by TheNegation on Jul 11, 2008 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I think Randy is a very intelligent fighter, he is like the chess champ of fighting but his size and age do put him at a huge disadvantage against Fedor. Tim was a friend who probably has a huge amount of respect for Randy and bif’d that fight bad but Randy did have a tough time with Tim so thats why I say that. Besides I know the org is looking for Tim to lose to Fedor and then Arlovski or Randy to lose to Fedor because they want to say they have the champ, the guy who is the best in the world and better than the UFC. Randy could be that guy but Tim and Arlovski cannot cause of their losses.

by Smokes on Jul 11, 2008 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arlovski, Couture, maybe an IFL refugee.

by THORAZINE on Jul 10, 2008 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great quote from someone who has never been in a clinch against a cage. It’ll be nice to see fedor fight someone other than a middleweight or a freakshow. Too bad he pees himself everytime he thinks of fighting in a cage. The more retarded people that call tim gay or boring or whatever, the more I like tim, because he obviously doesnt care about those haters, who seem to care about him so much.

by MMAsubb on Jul 10, 2008 4:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed… Tim has beaten AA, Rico(prime) and Vera who still might be champ one day!! Tim is a good solid fighter.

by Robert on Jul 10, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wrong to both of you, Tim is a slouch. This is why nobody likes him. They all know the guy has the skills to trade with anyone at the HW level and even if he didn’t have the skills everyone knows his size is almost enough of an advantage. His problem is he fights not to lose instead of fighting to win. I can’t believe you say that about Fedor. It sounds like you don’t know much about the guy considering Japan would try to make him lose because they wanted a Japanese fighter to be champ. So he ends pretty much every fight he’s in. Look Tim couldn’t even beat a 40 year old man half his size don’t kid me.

by Smokes on Jul 10, 2008 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy also finished Gonzaga who must experts still have as a top 10 heavyweight. I have nothing against Fedor, he is amazing!! but Tim I beleive is underated as a fighter, wether u find him boring or not. I wouldn’t be surprised if he beat anybody.

by Robert on Jul 10, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tim is dangerous for sure…moreso when he’s roided up.

by RobH86 on Jul 11, 2008 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Robert I know what your saying but Tim is more like Arlovski now although I stand to say Arlovski is the more skilled of the two. Tim is a slouch now and has fallen on using his size as an advantage. He used to be a beast and a very scary competitor like how he tore cabbage apart or he didn’t tap to Mir or how he stood with Arlovski all three of their fights the guy has the potential to be the best HW in the world and there is no doubt in my mind that he could beat Fedor but only if he fought to win instead of fighting not to lose.

by Smokes on Jul 11, 2008 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

smokes i usually agree with you man, I’m just saying, Fedor has been dodging real opponents SINCE the real pride days, and the cage as well. Hey bro, dont get me wrong i LOVE watching fedor, been with him the whole way. but this aint boxing, he better keep fighting top talent if he wants to keep the pound for pound best fighter spot, cuz in my opinion its anderson at 185. and to make people CRAZY i think miguel torres is #2 PfP

by MMAsubb on Jul 12, 2008 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

On paper this is the most interesting HW fight I can remember in quite a while. I see Fedor catching Tim in an arm bar in the late first or second round. Fedor will almost definetely fight Randy in September or December – by then I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) Randy’s contractual obligations with the UFC are up. I really am rooting for Fedor in this fight, just because if he loses it would take a lot of the interest out of a fight w/Randy later this year.

by efisher on Jul 10, 2008 4:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

by mrfancypants on Jul 10, 2008 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I second that motion… Fedor not losing is good for MMA because it builds interest for future fights… I’m speaking about myself! I don’t really care what the public thinks. We have been doing fine without MMA getting to main stream, why should we care now?

by Robert on Jul 10, 2008 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

because if it wasn’t mainstream, these guys would still be making a couple hundred dollars per fight and all the top competition would be doing other things because they couldn’t pay the bills.

by Smokes on Jul 11, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i hope tim wins.the only reason randy even want a fight with fedor is he is unbeaten.if…..when tim beats him randy win lose all interest in fighting him and all the fedor nuthuggers will either (1) make up some bs excuse or (2) turn coat on his azz or (3) both.mark my words

by jdawg on Jul 10, 2008 4:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

tim is the most boring fighter known! hes the shaq of mma. without his size advantage he sux!!! machida is boring as well, but it’s a bit different. we all know that big timmy can’t be elusive, lol!

by slaughter time on Jul 10, 2008 5:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Your are terribly wrong if you think Fedor will just walk in and get KO’d. That is hihgly unlikely. I think Fedor will armbar Tim lightnening quick in the 1st ir 2nd round.

However, Tim does have the ability to win, I just dont see him winning though.

by Chadx23 on Jul 10, 2008 5:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

tim can’t finish a fight and fedor will not let it go that far! i hope this is the last time we see the overgrown clumsy ass giant!

my bad on the double posts.

by slaughter time on Jul 10, 2008 5:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You guys don’t give Tim enough credit at all. If he can, and there are good chances he will be able to, stay on his feet, then Tim is a strong favorite due to his reach and cleaner striking skills. I feel bad for Randy, but I think Tim is going to win and Randy will either retire or take one last fight in the UFC with Nog.

by Bruiser on Jul 10, 2008 8:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

All the newbs think Fedor is god. They’re going to be awfully disappointed when Tim K’s Fedor TFO… and reality kicks the newbs teeth down their throat. Tim by vicious KO.

I like the part of the article above that says, Fedor is just an overated pride fighter and I agree. Timmy is going show this.

What if Randy does get to fight Fedor and beats him? Will this somehow alter the course of MMA history? I’m just expecting the unexpected you know…

by TheNegation on Jul 11, 2008 1:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder what Tim will weigh-in at? Is there an upper restriction on the HW division like in the UFC. If not he could be 285-290lbs, especially if he’s ’roided up again to get back the aggression lol.

by RobH86 on Jul 11, 2008 11:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fedor has already started rumors he may be injured. That way if he loses (not looses), he has his shogun. I mean his excuse.
