Phil Baroni, Paul 'Semtex' Daley and Buzz Berry in action this weekend overseas

phil baroniThe United Kingdom will host to three pretty interesting fights this this Saturday, July 12, from two separate organizations.

Cage Rage welterweight champion, Paul "Semtex" Daley (17-6-2), will make his return to mixed martial arts after a brief five month, semi-retirement. He'll face undefeated and tough as nails Slovenian, Bojan "Zelva" Kosednar (6-0), at Cage Warriors: "Enter The Rough House 7."

Here's a quote from "Semtex" on his return being on a smaller stage than he's used to:

"I needed a fight. I needed something to bring about greater focus. I approached them [Cage Warriors]. They run a great show in my hometown, and a lot of my friends and family have never seen me fight live."

Cage Rage 27: "Step Up" will also produce two intriguing match-ups.

In the main event, Phil Baroni (10-10) will make his debut at 170 pounds against Scott Jansen (3-2). "The New York Badass" believes the move to welterweight will give him a better chance to capture a world title.

In the co-main event, feared British knockout artist Neil Grove (5-1) will go toe-to-toe in a rematch with Robert "Buzz" Berry (12-7) -- the last man to defeat UFC hall of famer, Ken Shamrock. The two fought back in December at Cage Rage 24, with Grove winning by technical knockout after Berry did not answer the bell for the second round.

Neither of these events will be aired in the United States.

However, Cage Rage 27: "Step Up" can be seen on Nuts TV in the U.K. starting at 9 p.m. local time. Nothing to fear though for the U.S. fans who won't be able to view these fights live -- MMAmania.com will bring you the results and quick thoughts sometime after their completion.

10-10 Phil Baroni is fighting? Mr .500? Damn, I may fly there to watch!

by the_mexicutioner on Jul 10, 2008 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah Baroni needs to make a move to far less experienced fighters with 25% the number of fights that he has had.

A move to smaller show where the talent is, well, so-so

We all know he cant hang with mid level fighters and above, so why not try and earn a win against smaller, less talented, fighters in small promotions????

by fightfan on Jul 10, 2008 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly. Why not? Phil Baroni, for the most part, has only fought on the big stage. His 2nd pro fight was in the UFC. After his stint in the UFC, he went right over to PRIDE and faced the same caliber of competition – the best at the time.

I’ve never been a big fan of Baroni, but surprisingly, I have never hated on him either. The man knows how to put on a show, especially when he trains for a fight.

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

VM, when u say Baroni, knows how to put on a show… I hope u mean when he’s fighting in the cage.. and not that low rent strip-0-gram performance he puts on! lol… personally I hate that guy, he cheapens MMA and turns it into WWE like he did on the Elite XC CBS debut.

by THORAZINE on Jul 10, 2008 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

THE UFC really needs to hurry up and sign Semtex! I absolutely LOVE watching his fights.

Since baroni is now trying his luck in the welterweight division, I owuld have loved to see Semtex DESTROY Baroni, butwhatever! Doesnt matter where Phil fights, until he corrects his conditioning problems, he will continue to make a fool of himself by loosing to smaller name fighters!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

agreed Semtex is the bomb..no pun intended.

by MoonUK on Jul 10, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

MoonUK, what does Semtex mean?

My logical guess, now, would be some sort of exploding device.

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

plastic explosive…..a favorite of the SAS…..and IRA in the 80’s.

by MoonUK on Jul 10, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks MoonUK! as much as I love the guy, I admittedly had no idea what the hell Semtex meant.

by john on Jul 10, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure Semtex has been used in some of the bond films!

by Nick J on Jul 10, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Its the British explosive of choice!

by MoonUK on Jul 10, 2008 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Only bond films I ever watched where the last one, and Die another day with Halle Berry….

by john on Jul 10, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

thats old. the newest one was Casino Royale with the new bond, Daniel Craig.. and it was one of the best of the series IMHO

James Bond could kick Fedors arse

by Nick J on Jul 10, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I got Casino Royale on my DVR just waiting to be watched…

I’ve only seen a handful of Paul Daley fights, but every one that I saw was great. The kid is a super athletic striker with KO power

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s also starting to get some takedown defense and abit of ground game from what I hear, which has always been his problem.

by MoonUK on Jul 10, 2008 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

MoonUk: I also have been hearing that his groundgame/takedown defense is improving. I hear that he has been working very hard on his ju jitsu. His stand up is top of the line, once his ground game and takedown defense catch up, he will be a MONSTER and he is young so I fully expect him to become a well rounded, dominant mma fighter!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he runs a Muay thai class about 100miles from me. Its open to the public and I’ve been meaning to get down there and show him my moves!?!?!

an its a can to pad your stats.

For those that have been living under a rock and are not aware of the ANIMAL that is Fedor Emeileinenko! Here is the best FEDOR highlight ever made….Enjoy (take notice the agility that he shows in this highlight, its truley amazing especially when u take into consideration that he is a heavyweight….Few of the top heavyweights in the world can do some of the things that he shows in this highlight! Enjoy its one of my favorites:

You sure thats not Dominic Lombardozzi?

by the_mexicutioner on Jul 10, 2008 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, they do look alike, dont they!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m tired of hearing about Baroni, he’s a shabby C level fighter, he ain’t never will be a WW champ more like WW chump, if he lose this fight i don’t wanna see or hear about him on any posts no more. he doesn’t deserve to be posted. Baroni is a fluke.

by Ro on Jul 10, 2008 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

You’re right. Its like writing pieces on Elvis Sinosic.

The King of Rock and Rumble is in the house!!!

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Good video, but Timmy is still gonna beat him.

by Rubberman on Jul 10, 2008 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

Baroni is not as cocky as he used to be, knowing he’s not as bad ass as he use to be. In his recent interviews he has been humble. He’s the underdog from now on. Kinda makes me want to root for him.

by Rubberman on Jul 10, 2008 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

after seeing Baroni’s last fite and Tanner at the tuf finale, i think we’re starting to see a growing trend of guys who are not only past there prime but should not be fighting period still trying to make it and having a hard time walking away from the sport. None of the mma orgs really care b/c these guys bring star power to there cards and can be used to make names for lesser known fighters, but as a fan of the sport its getting really sad to watch these guys fight when they clearly shouldnt be. For guys like Tanner its hard b/c they seem like genuinely good guys. For people like shamrock and baroni i dont feel as bad b/c they come off as tools, but you still dont want to see them get hurt.

by Bobby O'shea on Jul 10, 2008 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

I think Hughes may be added to that list shortly. I can see him beating Serra, but not any of the top guys in the UFC WW division.

by the_mexicutioner on Jul 10, 2008 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yea i forgot about hughes. nah i hope serra kicks his @$$ and send him back to the farm. I dont blame hughes getting older for his recent losses, i think its b/c he didnt evolve with the sport. the guy has no stand up whatesover and we’ve seen that he cant really do much off his back. One dimensional fighters cant make it anymore these days.

by Bobby O'shea on Jul 10, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

u can add Tito as well, but his goose has been cooked for some time now!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Phil Baroni vs Macho man randy savage… mmmmoooohhh yyyeeeaaaahhh

Bobby O’Shea – agree fully that it is sad to see some of the older guard not being able to leave the sport.

That is why you and I are going to co promote the GFL (Geriatric Fighting League). Its a fight to see who can empty their opponents piss bag first. Could even get Madonna as a ring girl.

by Billy Boy on Jul 10, 2008 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think that Matt Serra will never win another fight inside the UFC. You heard it here first folks.

by IhitU.uHITfloor on Jul 10, 2008 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

BARONI WINS VIA ENTRANCE. Opponent will lose consciouscness from fatigue before Baroni makes it to the cage!

by O damn he got caught on Jul 10, 2008 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

I’m loving all this Baroni bashing right here and I agree with everything it’s beeing said here. Baroni is not past his prime because he never had one.

by Cristiano from Brazil on Jul 10, 2008 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

Baroni reminds me of a real life version of Johnny Bravo. He is so cartoon like he cracks me up. I will say that he does have some exciting fights and a very solid chin. There is no other fighter that makes me laugh as much Baroni does, without even trying. For that reason alone I don’t mind him.
