UFC Quick Quote: Brandon Vera could stay at 205 after UFN 14 Reese Andy fight

" ...everybody's saying that my power looks and good and actually my kicks look faster and harder now. I was 212 (pounds) today at the end of practice ... I think it's working to an advantage. It's making me hungry and meaner.... I wouldn't mind staying at 205. It's all up to UFC in their grand scheme of things. We'll see what's going on and what they have in mind.... Talent-wise, man, the who's who of 205 in the world is in the UFC right now. It's ridiculous, it's a whole long laundry list of who's who. And the heavyweight division — you can pull, I think, maybe six guys out of the heavyweights. So yeah, I would say that 205 is way more stacked."
-- Former heavyweight contender Brandon Vera -- who will make his light heavyweight debut against Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19 -- tells the USA Today that he could remain in the 205-pound division if the organization sees fit. However, "The Truth" is still bitter about his loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85: "Bedlam" last month, which he and many others feel was stopped prematurely. He would like to avenge the loss at some point ... especially if Werdum is able to one day soon capture the heavyweight strap.

That makes me think.. I wonder if EliteXC can ever do any programming on ESPN seeing that CSB is thier parent company.

ABC is ESPN’s parent, not CBS. CBS is head of Showtime, MTV, BET and The WB.

Chase – Brandon Vera vs. Anderson Silva. What do you think? Tell you what, if that ever gets scheduled, I may find a way to attend. So far, the UFC hasn’t come very close to Maryland, with the exception of Jersey (UFC 78).

I like that fight, I’m not an Anderson Silva fan, But I love Vera, I would love to see the fight, If he could KO Vera, strait up flatline him, like franklin did to Quarry, I would actually finally be a Spider fan.

OOOOHH. I REALLY like that match up! Anderson vs Vera. Intersting…
The funny thing is is that you can take Anderson Silva and match him up with any of the Top 205ers and you are going to have an exciting, blockbuster fight.
But Vera is more of Muay Thai striker, which the majority of the top 205’er are not, which would make for a very interesting fight with The Spider

yeah it would be great, too bad its out of the question. Silva stated that he wants to stick with 185 lbs. So a realistic yet great match up would be:
Vera vs. Machida!

Copy/Paste from the USA Today interview:
“Q) In retrospect, what would you differently to demonstrate that you’re still in it?
A) I don’t know. I go over that a lot, too, Sergio. I’ve asked a couple of other guys.
When the referee was talking to me, I told him I’m okay three times and then he stopped the fight because he said he thought I said, “OK, stop the fight.”
I’m like, what the hell? That doesn’t make any sense. I’ve never heard “OK” be used as a safety word, ever.
What are other words could I have come up with? I’m fine? Everything’s hunky-dory? I’m super-fantastic? Like, what else could I have said besides, I’m okay? And I had to respond to him, I felt at the time, because he was talking to me. I had to make sure he knew I was still conscious.
Just horrible. "
LOL, I’m hunky dory!

hahahahahaaha…I like the Truth and I’m glad he smartened up. I think he had big goals and wanted to accomplish them, I remember his interview on a UFC fight night where he said he wanted to be the LWH and the HW champ at the smae time. I think he can be the LWH champ. I think this is a more natural weight and I really like his chances at this weight. His striking will be up there with the best in the weight class and he will be quick too.
by Shadyone33 on Jul 10, 2008 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I used to like him but now it seems like he’s all talk and no action. Finally after losing 2 in a row (even if that was a controversial stoppage, he wasn’t exactly winning either)he decides to try his luck in lhw. Which is fine but it now seems like he’s trying to justify going down in weight because that’s what Dana wants and that he wants to be in the division with all the talent rather than the fact that maybe the fighters at hw were just too big/overpowering for him to handle. Don’t get me wrong, he can still compete at hw but don’t think he’ll ever be near the top.

I would have liked to have seen Vera eventually face Brock Lesner. At least Vera would certainly find out if he is too small for heavyweight. haha
by naturalshadow on Jul 10, 2008 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
DrHarry, I actually think the opposite. I think that Vera has become much more down to earth since he returned from his 1 year lay off and Sylvia fight. When Vera first came onto the scene he was super cocky and after like his first UFC fight, during his post fight interview he said he was going to be the first ever HW and LHW champ. Wake up buddy, you just had 1 fight in the organization…. I thought that Brandon was much more arrogant and cocky back then than he is now. I seen a recent interview he did with Mauro Renallo and he was very cool and down to earth.
by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I remember those days. He may be more down to Earth but still needs more humility. Hopefully he does well in lhw.

MANIA.wow! i just saw my 1rst t.v. ads for affliction. they were pretty good. the ironic and very strange thing about them is where i saw them, on SPIKE t.v. during an UFN replay. i dont belive ive ever saw a channel run an ad for something that is in direct competion with them, and on the same night as well! that doesnt make any sense at all to me. i know that the ufc doesnt own spike, and that affliction probably paid alot to get them aired at this time, but how do you advertise someone who is in direct competiton with you. it could possibly take fans away from ufn 14 show, wich could hurt spike’s ratings. im sure their sponsers cant be too happy with this. nor dana white. whats your take on this!

I used to work for a cable company with marketing and Affliction may be using the local cable companies to advertise on certain channels targeted at certain age group or cohort.
For example, when I worked for mediacom during Iowa Hawkeye football games advertisement would air about Iowa State football and etc.

I saw those ads on Spike a week ago and I thought I was just tripping and no 1 else mentioned it…I guess it was true…I didnt understand why the were on spike but it was a pretty good comercial
As for Vera, he can have more success then at LHW then he could at HW, and if he fought at heavyweight he would fight B-level fighters, at 205 he can have big matchups with the top dogs and hang in there with most of them./
Vera vs. Machida!
by john on Jul 10, 2008 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but the interesting thing about that Kenny and Din fight was that at one point, Din makes a motion — a quick running motion — indicating that he thought Kenny was running from him.
If you watch the fight — like I did the second time, knowing that Din does that in the fight — you see that Kenny throws and lands (though they are blocked) several leg kicks and several head kicks — probably about 20-25. However, every time Din went to throw a leg kick or something, Kenny would change the angle and Din would pull back from the kick.
In other words, Kenny was throwing kicks all over the place, but Din wasn’t quick enough to land any on Kenny… so he accuses Kenny of running.
I’m not sticking up for Kenny — he’s not my favorite fighter — but just because you can’t figure another fighter out doesn’t mean they’re running. I felt the same way a bit in the Starns fight. Now, there’s no doubt Starn WAS running, but I still felt Nate should have gone for a takedown, tried to clinch and dirty box, or ANYTHING! If a guy is running, back him into the fence and MAKE him fight!
by Soups on Jul 10, 2008 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Din’s little running motion taunting Kenny and then blowing out his knee is karma at its finest.

Mr.FancyPants – Yeah, that sounds right. Going to the local cable companies directly allows them access to specific demographics. I missed Spike T.V. between 9PM and 11PM, so I don’t know what they had on tonight. (Usually watch while working out.) Didn’t see any Affliction ads after 11PM. But I’m not surprised. It’s a great idea, excellent, in fact. They’re targeting the best demographic.

BW, just a couple weeks ago when I was talking about Affliction and the fact that I have yet to see a commercial, I brought up the question of whether or not they’d be able to advertise on Spike since the UFC is affiliated with them. I had no idea whether or not.
I was saying it would be a good idea for them to run thier commercials on Spike during UFC events and also, even better, on CBS during the Kimbo/Thompson event.
So far I seen the commercial, but only on HDnet

I was very impressed by Anthony “Rumble” Johnson’s last performance (brutal KO of Tommy Speer) as well as Kevin Burns’s (who is a blue belt) submission of black belt Roan Carneiro. One of them is the real deal, and I’m about to find out who.
I’m also interested in the outcome of Jesse Taylor vs. CB Dollaway, although I don’t think the fight itself will be very good.

Rumble is on te rise, thats for sure. After he whoops up on his opponent next weekend, I would like to see Rumble face a top 10 guy, not a top 5 just yet, but a top 10 fighter, to see how much is skill and how much is athleticism.

Haha, this coming from the guy who said he’d be the first guy in the UFC to hold belts in two different weight classes at the same time. HW and LHW.
I’m a pretty big Vera fan, but always thought he was a little bit too full of himself. I do like watching him fight. I think the move will only make his fights that much better. He kind of gets pushed around at HW.
by Punk Rock Scott on Jul 10, 2008 1:31 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I have always thought that Brandon Vera was highly overrated in the heavyweight division. What really made me dislike him was that there was always a reason for his loss. First the broken hand(well, this is legit) and then the controversial stoppage. I’ll admit it was stopped early, but damn, his ass just ate 20 punches and wasn’t doing much to get out of mount. I thought it was kind of lame that fans protested the stoppage and took the thunder out of Werdum’s victory. With that said, I think Vera will do really well at LHW. I think he will have the strength and reach advantage that will give fighters problems.
By the way, can anyone point me to a good MMA discussion forum that isn’t filled with dummies? Sherdog forums is filled with idiots.
by Chris W on Jul 10, 2008 2:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Werdum DOSEN’T deserve any thunder. The ref beat Vera (he didn’t have a scatch on him), Werdum didn’t. That would be like the ref jumping in when Vera rocked Werdum , and saying thats it, you’ve had enough. Actually that wouldn’t even be as bad, because Werdum was at least rocked , Vera was completely FINE. His ass DIDN’T eat 20 punches, his GLOVES did, it’s called INTELIGENTLY DEFENDING YOURSELF.

So we should crucify him for setting high Goals?
I have no problem with the statement he made, I dont think he will ever acheive it, but as a fighter you have to think that way.
by john on Jul 10, 2008 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But you don’t say it in the octagon, with the current LHW champ in the crowd, after your first UFC win. I mean, he was only 5-0 at the time. That’s not even close to as good of a record as Nate Loughran (8-0) or Johnny Rees (10-0) who both make thier octagon debut’s on July 19th. Would you think that the winner of that fight can justify grabbing the mic and claiming that they will be the first ever MW and WW champ at the same time?

He was a nobody at the time, what do u expect? U call people out to get attention, I dont like it but I get it! Everyone does it…look at Sokoudjou, he does it all the time…. Its definetly not a good enough reason to hate on the guy….He has been a class act since coming back, and I think he has been humbled, so I for one am cutting the guy a break….His attitude doesnt bother me, his last 2 performances are what bothers me…. I would prefer to see him fight like he us3ed to and talk all the smack in the world, then fight like he has recently and be a class act.

205’s better for him, there’s more exciting fighters to fight in LHW than HW division. i don’t agree with Vera still compete in HW, there’s alot of monsterous HWs which could give Vera a tough time to reach for HW title shot, waste of time and contract. the fights will be more exciting if he compete with 205 fighters. i’d like to see him take on Wandy, Spider, Sandman, Forrest, Iceman, Rampage (Vera trains with Rampage, likely not happen but hopefully)and more.

If Anderson Silva made the announcement today that he was staying at 205, where would he be ranked at this moment?
I think he is instantly Top 5.
JuggaloMike, for your list, Thiago Silva is too high. He is Top 10 but not Top 5 in my opinion, simply because he has yet to beat anyone of signifigance. I’m a Chuck hater and I’d have him higher than 7. Wanderlei Silva would have to be ranked higher than Thiago and Vera as well.

The question was where would people rank Vera… to compare placing Vera with placing the best P4P fighter on the planet is crazy. Vera is a middle of the pack HW moving down a division. Anderson is a pure bred destruction machine who would garner a unique placement in any division he moved to.

Not to mention the other “Big Boys” hes either tapped out Ko’d…Vera can hang with the HW’s just got back on the road with 2 losses right off the bat.
