Affliction issues more than 250 media passes for 'Banned' event on July 19

affliction banned
Affliction MMA spent literally millions of dollars to secure one of the most talent-laded fight cards ever put together for its inaugural "Banned" event set to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on July 19. To do so, it seems the upstart promotion has had to deprive its marketing department of the necessary funds it takes to sell a non-UFC event in the United States.

Or so it seems.

Television commercials have been scarce -- apparently the the clothing company-turned mixed martial arts promoter is banking on the star power of the athletes it has rounded up to take care of the PPV sales along with a heavy online advertising campaign.

There's also that massive billboard in Times Square.

This combination may have worked had it not been for Dana White and the UFC throwing together Ultimate Fight Night 14 on short notice. It takes place on the same night -- for free on Spike TV -- with arguably the most popular fighter on the planet right now, Anderson Silva.

I've seen plenty of ads for the UFC's show on July 19, but like I said, where's the Affliction hype machine been hiding?

Perhaps, however, Affliction is smarter than most give it credit.

Today, the company distributed a press release, stating that a record number of press passes have already been requested for "Banned" ... and we're still nearly two weeks out.

Is it possible that Affliction thinks a strong late push from the Internet, radio and television world will be enough to sell its top-notch product? Look at this article, for example -- we're already helping them market the event and they didn't have to spend a dime.

It's an interesting concept.

Why spend money on selling fights when you can take those dollars and invest them into a better product and let this glorious invention we call the Internet do it's thing?

Traditional marketing is still powerful. I'm not saying you don't need to push what you're selling, but this card is stacked, and the media seems to be fixated. Affliction might be right after all -- this thing might just sell itself.

We'll see come July 19 when the PPV buys and gate receipts trickle in.

As of right now, according to the press release, more than 250 media passes have already been requested from numerous media outlets in different countries, including Russia, Japan, Korea, Germany, England, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand.

It seems the UFC isn't the only show in town trying to take this sport global.

For those that have been living under a rock and are not aware of the ANIMAL that is Fedor Emeileinenko! Here is the best FEDOR highlight ever made….Enjoy (take notice the agility that he shows in this highlight, its truley amazing especially when u take into consideration that he is a heavyweight….Few of the top heavyweights in the world can do some of the things that he shows in this highlight! Enjoy its one of my favorites:

the best p4p fighter is fighting on July 19 and it’s not anderson silva. Most people don’t relize that silva weighs about 215 and fedor is 224.

by fred on Jul 10, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

fEDOR is the best until proven otherwise.

Silva has been finished by smaller men: Ryo Chonan and daju Takase….when was the last time Fedor lost a fight or a round? Not since joining PRIDE back in 2003..

I love Silva, but to me, Fedor is still the top dog until someone beats him.

by john on Jul 10, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

GENIUS! Spend the money on the fighters and they will martket themselves….I LOVE IT!!!

I would pay any price for this card, HONESTLY! If they said, its going to cost $150, I swear I would pay it without thinking twice.

This will feature one of the most relevant questions in mma history. We got to see how most of the pRIDE stars would do against the big guns of the UFC, but we never got to see what pride’s TOP DOG….“Fedor the GOD” would do against a legit UFC champion….We will find out in 9 days!

John in all honesty… there is no Pride vs UFC… just fighters who happen to be fighting in different organizations. It’s not like their coming in from another planet!!! I consider Anderson one of the best fighters ou there. Wether or not he is fighting in the UFC or not. It’s just a name. I think the UFC has the best talent in the world but it’s not like the UFC made or designed the fighters. Your thoughts. July 19th is going to be sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only attraction the press passes are going to bring is attention for the second event. I will be so surprised if they even break even on this one.

Im just too sceptical. I get the feeling that this is to push the clothing line, and up the brand value. I don’t think its going to go pass three shows, and i just don’t see it becoming an established event organization.

Still, Im going to enjoy the hell out of it while it lasts.

by chris on Jul 10, 2008 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I just don’t see how holding one MMA event that is hardly getting promoted would better sell thier T shirts. As it stands, only hardcore fans are buying the PPV, everyone of which, has already seen an Affliction shirt and know that you need to be on crack to spend $60 for a Tshirt.

I’ve heard radio spots on ESPN radio and there are commercials during Inside MMA and other HDNet MMA events.

Affliction may blow it’s whole load on this inaugural event with nothing left to interest anyone afterwards like a 16 year old boy losing his viginity with two bumps and a squirt. I hope, we the fans, aren’t going to be left with a sheer feeling of unsatisfaction by year’s end. I guess we’ll have to wait and see…..

by Nine Duce on Jul 9, 2008 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully, Affliction is planning on losing a little money with the intent of putting on such a great show that the money will come with later events. I have no desire for them to “two pump chump” on us. lol

by chefdaddy on Jul 10, 2008 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously, whoever thinks that Affliction is planning on making money on thier first event is insane. The UFC put on how many events, like 30 something, before being bought out by Zuffa. At that time, after having 30 some-odd events, THEY WERE STILL LOSING MONEY.

All start up comapany’s should expect to lose money at first, and that doesnt just go for MMA organizations.

whoa, Affliction is a serious business.

by Ro on Jul 9, 2008 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

Damn , would I would like to be the accountant for this show. I am so curious to know just how much they are spending on everything from fight salaries, marketing, ALL overhead!!!, etc, etc…..

I dont think that there is anyway they could even come close to breaking even?? Is there?? Even if they somehow sell 250,000(which is probably highly unlikely), that WILL NOT even cover fighter’s pay for ONE fight(Fedor-Sylvia).

Just curious to see how this promotion unfolds……and if they will eventually make money???

by fightfan on Jul 9, 2008 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

I am curious about this too. I want to know what the main event is paying out. I have seen speculations of a lot of money…I mean above UFC title money. I am hoping that they are willing to take a loss as I think is inevitable in this event to jump start their promotion. Who know, any input or inside tips give us some incite.

by halljam2 on Jul 9, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I am pretty sure that they are expecting a loss in their 1st show. They have some brilliant business minds working on this event and I doubt they are so Naive as to think that they wont loose money on the 1st show, everyone does!

We are just hearing a lot about affiliction because we are hard core fans. The main stream doesn’t even know that this event is taking place. The truth is if you ask people on the street who fedor is they would know. Chuck lidell yes, Randy couture probaly, fedor no. He is the best fighter now or ever but you still need to market him to the main stream.

All this crap about Casual fans not knopwing Fedor, I think is just BS! Ignorant sportcenter, which knows NOTHING about mma, even listed Fedor as 1 of the top 25 best athletes, only other fighter to make the list is Anderson Silva.

This myth that people dont know Fedor ios highly exagerated, and if they havent seen him fight, I am sure that they have heard the name andf the Myth because his name rings out through out the world! Casual fans know and LOVE Arlovski (more so than the hardcore fans), they will all know Sylvia as well as Babalu…They know Lindland from UFC and IFL….Rothwell has some juice, after fighting on TV for the IFL and dominating.

Affliction will be just fine and I cant wait to hear what the fight card is for the next show in October….October will be amazing:

Affliction v2nd card
UFC event Free on Spike (UFC 89)
UFC 90 from Chi town

by john on Jul 10, 2008 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I wish this were true but I don’t think it is. My friends, who have watched virtually every UFC event over the last three years could really care less about this card. They only know of Fedor because of me talking about him and they all hate Silvia, so there is really nothing that they want out of the main event. As far as the old school UFC guys they don’t know who they are either. I can almost sell it with Babalu and Arlovski but that is a stretch.

In short I’ll be buying the PPV and will be lucky if most of my friends will want to watch the Affliction show for free over the UFC event.

I don’t see this going well for affliction. Too bad.

I agree. John you can’t really think that the average american knows who fedor. I agree with dana’s cheap. They would know liddell but not fedor. I’m not taking anything away from fedor his is the best fighter ever but the casual fan just doesn’t know him that well.

DonnyG, your friends appear to simply be fans of the UFC, not MMA. Do they watch IFL or EliteXC?

Because if they were watching the UFC for 3 years, they should have definitely came across PRIDE FC on FSN while channel surfing.

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see how this is going to work out? How much does the UFC spend on advertising? Maybe that is the extra amount that they are giving to the fighters. Plus, what about people endorsing Affliction? If they are making the UFC put out more events and they are having good fights, then I think that Affliction is awesome.

by RyanHobbs on Jul 9, 2008 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

Several people on here have mentioned similar things to this, but a LOT of people that I know who follow the UFC have absolutely no idea about this event, or even who some of the fighters are. Rather sad.

by chefdaddy on Jul 9, 2008 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

I completely agree. I was just on the phone with a friend that I turned on to MMA last year when we were roommates. He wanted to talk about the Forrest – Rampage fight. He mentioned the free Fight Night coming up on Spike and I told him about how Affliction had a big event the same night – he had no idea. On top of that no interest when he could watch UFC for free. Like it has been said all along in these threads the casual MMA fan has no idea this event is even taking place – and even when they find out they are planning to watch UFC.

Hey KEVIN! Here’s an idea for your morning post. I have seen a great deal of complaints on the current “10 point must system”. John has said that Pride’s system was better, but I simply don’t know the difference. How about an analysis of those two systems pros and cons, with recommended changes for the betterment of MMA? This is a discussion for everyone, as the Griffin/Rampage fight seems to have brought the systems flaws more into the open. Have at it guys.

by chefdaddy on Jul 9, 2008 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

Chefdaddy: Pride system judged the fight as a whole. UFC system judges it by rounds!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

That was a far shorter discussion than what I had hoped to inspire. LMFAO!

by chefdaddy on Jul 10, 2008 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Chefdaddy: For starters: I just feel like the UFC scoring system puts way to much emphasis on takedowns and Octagon control.

Takedowns: Why in the world should a fighter get points for taking the fight to the ground? Isn’t being in top position enough of a reward? Too many times I have seen fighters “steal a round” with a BS takedown, but then do nothing with the top position (For example Chuck vs. Wandy). Another example: Say Werdum or Nogueira get taken down, why the hell should their opponents get point for take the fight down into their world? Fighters like Nog, Werdum, Almeida have no problem being in guard, so why should there opponents earn point for taking them down to the ground where the ground is where they want to be anyway? Only takedowns that should count for points should be Slams….why? because the do damage. 1st and for most these are FIGHTS, which to me, means that DAMAGE should be the most important criteria. Fighters now a days train extensively in both stand up and the ground game, so why in the world should a fighter recieve points for taking the fight down? They should be awarded points for what the do after the fights on the ground.

by john on Jul 10, 2008 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Octogan Control: Another BS criteria! There are many different styles of fighting in the UFC and counter punching is 1 of them. Many top fighters are counterpunchers not known for pressing the pace, like Machida and even the beloved Chuck Liddell. These guys like to sit back, often retreating while waiting for an opponent to attack and leave himself open to counterstriking. THat is there style! Counter punchers are always going to be at a disadvantage in the Octagon Control department and I do not feel that is fair or an accurate criteria of judging the fights. Some say that the UFC implemented the Octagon control so that fighters would keep attacking and provide more action in a fight…I say BS!!

Pride had a much better way of ensuring action packed fights….When fighters didnt stay busy during a fight, they were slapped with Yellow cards….which caused the fighter to loose 10% of his purse….HIt them where it hurts (financially) and thats the best way to ensure action packed fights. Why should the guy who attacks more get awarded points? If he is attacking more, he is already at an advantage because he has more opportunities to land shots….why give the guy points on top of that?

Counterpunchers will always be at a disadvantage until this criteria is changed…and fighters should not have to chgange there styles because of the scoring system….the scoring system should change to adopt their styles!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Ju jitsi: Ju Jitsu is not judged the same in a fight. It has no consistancy and changes from fight to fight depending who the judges are. Submission attempts are just as important as strikes but are often over looked when a fight goes to a decision.

Take for example the Almeida/Cote fight: The 3rd judge (a woman) gave the 1st round to Cote…what a joke that was, Almeida was attempting submissions left and right in the 1st round and Cote did relatively nothing, so how can anyone in their right mind award the round to Cote? THat was a complete joke. I still had Cote winning the fight, but thats not the point, say Almeida would have won the 3rd round, he would have been screwed out of a win because the judge had him loosing the 1st round. regardless of if a decision is correct, we have to ensure that EACH judges scores everysingle round accurately and consistently. Judges need to have some kind of convention and sit down and talk about how they will score the ju jitsu aspect of fights, because it changes from fight to fight, and from judge to judge and that is SO UNFAIR to the fighters.

Ultimately, there are many ways the UFC scoring system could improve. In my eyes, th most important criteria should be damage and fights should be either completely judged as a whole (like PRIDE) or if the UFC has to keep the 10 point scoring round by round system, then after the 3 rounds are scored, extra points should be awarded for the fight as a whole.

In my eyes, fights should be judged as a whole and the biggest criteria should be damage. Thats what a fight is! who can inflict the most damage onto their opponent through out the fight! If I had it my way, the fighter that takes the most beating through out the 15 minutes should lOOSE!!!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

THAT"S what I was looking for! lol. Great breakdown. With the way you describe, Pride’s way seems far more logical. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Anytime Cheffdaddy!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Awww, I wish I looked at this thread earlier. Great write ups John

ANd chefdaddy, basically how PRIDE’s scoring worked was each judge was given a piece of paper. At the end of the fight, they write down the name of the fighter that they think won the fight. It gets no simply than that.

For example, I hate when there is a SUPER close fight and the judges just barely give the first two rounds to fighter A. I am referring to one of those fights like Forrest/Bonnar I that was next to impossible to score. That means that going into the 3rd and final round, fighter B has no chance at winning a decision, even though the fight is completely even to that point. In that 3rd Round, even if fighter B drops fighter A and nearly finshes the fight and gets a 10-8 round, he STILL can’t win. Best case would be a draw. That’s not right. In my opinion, fighter B should win the decision

by ViolentMike on Jul 10, 2008 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

VM: EXACTLY!!!! that is exactly why the scoring system stinks! Best point I have read on this site all day!

by john on Jul 10, 2008 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Its safe to say that no matter how the scoring system works, when you leave it to judges you leave yourself open to get screwed big time….Rampage/Ninja…Mezger/Arona…different organization, same BS judging. Lets agree that there is no “perfect” measure of scoring in a fight because everyone sees it differently and leaving it to the judges is never safe.

Where’s AA in the picture?

Yea, I dont think they are planning on making a profit on this event. They know they are going to eat some of the cost and maybe use this first event to build exposure into the mainstream MMA scene.

It’s a super stacked card but my question is where are they going to go from here? They need more fighters and they need someone marketable like Tito. Yes, Tito isnt the fighter he use to be but people know Tito and right now its who casual fans KNOW.

by hayden_deacon on Jul 9, 2008 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

Giving out media passes has nothing to do with the selling of PPVs nor is it in any shape of form “out of the ordinary”. I’d put my money on Lorenzo Fertitta over Tom Antencio any day of the week. This card is only interesting to us hardcore types. Fedor and Tim Sylvia are marketing duds.

by Muscle Dolphin on Jul 9, 2008 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

I hope they do well, as this card is great and very promising for future mma events, however i can’t see them getting a big ppv buy rate, especially with Anderson Silva fighting on a card on free tv.

Fedor is not going help get big buyrates, his bout against lindland did only 20,000 buys if i recall correctly. They’ve spent a ridiculous amount on the fighters, yet it would probably have been better spent on advertising.

I’m predicting low ppv buyrates due to lack of interest from casual fans, hope i’m wrong.

Things have a way of working out… if two promotions can co-exist with healthy lineups and exciting fights, it will be all the better for the fans. If not, one will just fizzle out leaving the other to shine.

I have yet to see any mention of the show outside of mma websites. Hell of a marketing strategy…..

They should have scrapped Megadeath and bought more commercials. For one, does anyone listen to Megadeath? For two, Dana White is going to act like a marketing genius after everyone tunes in for UFN 14 because they actually know it’s taking place and how to see it. Lack of commercials is going to kill them.

I agree with the MegaDeath statement. Do they really think that they will get more PPV buys by having MegaDeath perform a couple of songs?? MAYBE, seven guys in their mid 30’s with hair down to their butt-cracks would order it for that reason alone.

They should have definitly used the MegaDeath money to advertise more.

I know that I’ll be twisting one up during that part of the telecast.

Anderson Silva is the most popular fighter on the planet? Ridiculous statement considering almost no one outside of hardcore to medium level fans of mma know who he is.

The problem here is that this card is not even close to as good as people are making it out to be. Almost every match involves someone who was released from the UFC for some reason or other, many of the fighters are past their time, and the main event involves a past-UFC fighter who generally makes for pretty boring fights and his opponent is supposedly the best HW but he hasn’t fought a real fight in years.

Every single fight on this card could easily end in round 1 as a savage mismatch or every match could go the distance in a boring fight. Either outcome is not good for the fans.
