MMA Quick Quote: Urijah Faber vs Miguel Torres 'is going to happen'

miguel torres urijah faber

"I know me an Faber are going to fight in the future, it’s going to have to happen. The people would love to see it. I would love to do it. I know that he would too. It’s just a matter of the motivation of the paycheck. The WEC has the two best fighters at 135 and 145. They’re not going to want to put a superfight together for a while. They’re going to let me dominate my weight class and let (Faber) do his thing."

-- WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres speaks with FiveOuncesOfPain.com on the possibility of a blockbuster showdown with WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber sometime in the near future. Both men are arguably the best two fighters in their respective weight classes and a fight between the two is inevitable if the pair continue to clear out their respective divisions. Sooner rather than later, please.

no way…have you seen what a beast miguel is. Watch his last fight. I think that was probably one of the best fights i’ve seen in my entire life

Seriously not a dull moment in any of his WEC fights, I love watching him fight.

If ever there was a fight that needed to happen in the WEC.

by JV on Jul 8, 2008 11:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The big question is, what weight would they fight at. HOnestly, I don’t think the WEC would put the belts on the line because they wouldn’t want the same person to be champ in thier two best divisions.

When they do fight, I think that they should fight at 140 lbs and have it not be for a belt, but rather to find out who the best lb for lb fighter in the WEC is.

Crowds in Arkansas came for the lure of cage fighting and $1 beer, but police say what they got instead was men ripping each others’ clothes off and kissing — a stunt suspected of being orchestrated by Sacha Baron Cohen of “Borat” fame.

“We had a contract for cage fighting. We were deceived,” said Dwight Duncan, president and CEO of Four States Fair Grounds in Texarkana, where the first of two Arkansas fights raised suspicions last month.

Matt Labov, a Los Angeles-based publicist for Baron Cohen, said he had no comment Monday about the faked fights. One of Baron Cohen’s movies is due out next year.

The day after the June 5 Texarkana bout, Fort Smith’s convention center hosted “Blue Collar Brawlin.’” Fort Smith police Sgt. Adam Holland said organizers told him a character named “Straight Dave” would goad a planted audience member into the ring for a fight.

The two men would then wrestle, rip away some of their clothes and share a brief kiss reminiscent of one between Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell in the film “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.”

Producers said “there would be a romantic embrace,” Holland said. “They said it was kind of to essentially make fun, poke fun at wrestling — two guys rolling around on the floor, all sweaty.”

An elaborate array of mounted and handheld video cameras caught the crowd of 1,600’s reaction as the two men “went right up to the line” of the city’s morality laws, Holland said. The two men stripped down to their underwear, kissed and rubbed on each other, the sergeant said.

The audience, as well as local fighters drawn to take part in the show, became enraged. “It set the crowd off lobbing beers,” Holland said. “They had beers in plastic cups. Those things can get some distance on them actually.”

Kevin I lost a little over $1200 on the fight because of the odds….I bet $500, I look at it as what I am trying to win, not how much I would loose…know what I mean.
For example if the odds are the same in the rematch…I would bet $1000, but it would losse around $2,400…Know what I mean?

.
No John, it’s not how much you would have won, counted as a loss, it’s how much money you would have won.

If I put 10k on rampage but would have only won 3000, I didn’t lose 3000, I lost 10!

Cmon buddy, you’re smarter than this!!

by kevin on Jul 8, 2008 11:12 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I know how much it looses. I wrote it backwards. I was trying to say that I lost my $500 dollar bet, when in reality it cost me a little over $1,200….KNow what I mean? Bet $500 to loose $1,200

by JOhn on Jul 8, 2008 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol, no john, you bet 500 and lost 500.

by kevin on Jul 8, 2008 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what he means (i think) is that he bet 1200 to win 500. so therefore, he lost the 1200 he bet. (the danger of betting on favourites sadly)

by eightyproof on Jul 8, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, i bet $1,200 to win $500…wtf is the debate all about? Damn!

Urijah vs Miguel would be crazy match.. but looking at this match up today.. I will lean towards Urijah. 1 thing is for sure it would be must see fight.

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 11:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah THis fight Must Happen! Interesting to se eif they will eet at a catch weight or if Torres will have to Bulk up. It would be a freaking War that would probably go to a decision!

by JOhn on Jul 8, 2008 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Torres probably has about 1 inch on him in height, but Urijah cuts some weight to make 145. The two of them do not walk around anywhere near the same weight. Just look at the picture, they are almost even in height, but Torres has the muscle definition of a 10 year old boy and Faber is built better than Sherk. Someone that skinny going against Urijah, you would hope to have like a 4 inch hight adantage.

Standing, the edge goes to Miguel Torres and BJJ goes to Torres. Wrestling to Urijah. Faber would be able to dictate where the fight takes place. Torres could light him up with quick combinations on the feet, and Faber has newly found 1 punch KO power. Torres wouldn’t get submitted by anyone, so I won’t even consider that a possibility. I see this playing out as a 5 round war with Faber winning a super tight decision – mainly for having the top position, although, not inflicting much damage when he has it.

by ViolentMike on Jul 8, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Faber will dictate where the fight takes place alright. Hell dictate whether he’ll take a beating standing up or take a beating on the mat and finally hell dictate his own tap.

“1 punch ko power”, hardly. Miguel will see that right coming from miles away that pulver decided to block with his face that night.

You shouldn’t.. the UFC doesn’t feel bad given us UFC86.

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Man that could have went either way. I for one thought that the matchups were great and I was stoked for UFC86. But it turned out to be a boring night of fights for the most part. But Ufc in itself had nothing to do with the fact that the fights were not up to par. What can you say ,MMA is UNPREDICTABLE.It happens.
Go Forrest!!

I know dude..but I eyes were burning during UFC86..now that they have seen the outcome..outside them cock blocking Affliction..they owe us a free event on top of July 19th.

I would give this fight to Miguel he has fought guys 40 lbs bigger than him and whooped their ass when his ju jits wasn’t even at his best. This dude used to fight in bars at the age of 17.

by Uncle Tom on Jul 8, 2008 11:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The only thing is.. how many Urijah Faber’s has he fought. Miguel has whatit takes to beat him.. but I’m pretty sure he has yet face an opponent as likes of the California Kid.

Exactly Phil. Urijah is a freek of nature. But Miguel’s skill level is throug the roof!

Nice, I’ve been waiting for this. I just hope we get to see it live in Canada.

Someone at WEC get a deal with a canadian network…PLease and make it available in HD, we still dont get spike in HD here.

by Ro-J on Jul 8, 2008 12:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Who in the US gets Spike in HD? They haven’t offered it in my area on Comcast, Dish Network, or ATT yet. Don’t know about Direct TV but I’d guess not.

I have Spike HD on Directv. But WEC is on Versus, which I also get in HD. Life is good.

by john on Jul 8, 2008 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

VS in HD.. not so much, i wasn’t impressed with their HD programming, the WEC cards in HD don’t like any better really than the ones on regular vs.

by kitsunex on Jul 9, 2008 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, the difference between HD and regular TV is worth it for sure. I HATE having to watch channels that aren’t HD.

faber would kill him.. miguels never faces somebody HALF as good as urijah.. he just absolutely demolished who was thought to be the top 145 lb fighter in the world in jens pulver, miguel has fought who? NOBODY’S nobody on this planet will submit urijah and miguel would be way outta his league in this one with standup

by randy murders on Jul 8, 2008 12:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Pulver is not all that great either. So Faber beating him really didnt say much for me. Him and Miguel IMO would be the hardest fight Faber has ever fought.

by TrueMMa on Jul 8, 2008 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know man, Jeff Curran is a pretty tough guy and Faber also fought Tyson Griffin. I know he lost, but Tyson is a harder fight then Miguel, IMO.

Tyson is sick as hell.

by TrueMMa on Jul 8, 2008 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude your backwards. Did you see the eye of the last guy that stood with him? SHUT COMPLETELY for the win! Did you notice the heel hook dude had on Torres and the look in torres’s face? Torres looked like I will NEVER tap your gonna have to break something of mine before I break something of yours but I WILL NOT TAP!!!

As for the pulver fight that wasn’t the lil evil that was suppossed to show up that night he didn’t look focused he looked lost. He mentioned something about a miscarage scare or something I’m sure was weighing heavy on him.

Faber hasn’t really fought TOP competition, no disrespect to his opponents but really the only time he got tested he lost. I thought Jeff Curran should have pulled it off he was on Fabers back forever.

Torres completely manhandled Beebe and he’s no slouch. Maeda came to fight too but Miguel spotted that eye and zerod in on it and pumped it up with blood. Torres in WEC has been close to perfect, giving Maeda props for bringin it. But more props for the beutifull display of Muay Thai and jiu jitsu everytime to Torres love to see him fight, exciting everytime im jumping screaming girl telling me shhh shh calm down calm down it’s just a fight we have neighbors.

by bayareasrick on Jul 9, 2008 6:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that Torres will have that 135 belt for years. I dont see ANYONE, period beating him. He is an animal. I have heard stories about him from peers of his, about hour long sparring seesions, fighting guys 50-100 lbs bigger than him, ETC, ETC. I heard some absolutely sick stories involving him

You how big the egos are of fighters. If you got people like Bonnar and others in Chicago saying the kid is a bad mo fo. You know it is true.

and I think that Faber would give him a run, but I think that Torres would win. I would love to see that one!!!!I would love to see Torres challenge even bigger guys in bigger weight classes. That would be funny to see a bantamweight beating up on a WW or MW….LOL!!

Faber would take Torres, I would give Torres a chance to win or KO Faber for the last 2 rounds though, but the 1st 3 are Fabers.

by THORAZINE on Jul 8, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Faber is the man!! Sactown!!! Faber just has to watch to not get caught in Torres’ many submissions, but I don’t think so.

by bayareasrick on Jul 9, 2008 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Faber is one of my favorite fighters too. I just think that Torres would sub him or out cardio him and maybe even KO him late in fight.

Torres
Faber
Penn
GSP
A Silva
ANY Silva, except Asseurio
Fedor(sorry, the HW out there now are all, well, ugh!!)

What a SUPER-FIGHT that would be, WOW!!! I give it to Torres, that dude is badass, and has some sick jits too!! He has all the tools to beat Faber and his time is approaching fast. Miguel has been fighting for a long time, and people now are just starting to see his many talents. This kid is the real deal, and will be around for a long, long time, beating Faber will just be a part of his legacy.

by BIGMIG on Jul 8, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed.

by bayareasrick on Jul 9, 2008 6:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Urijah Faber has defeated a Jitsu ace in Jeff Curran, Urijah Faber has defeated a stand up king in Jens Pulver, Urijah Faber can out wrestle anybody in the 145 division right now.

I personally do not think Torres could defeat him because Faber will be too big for Torres, but I think it would be a great fight.

Now there is a fighter that has dropped weight to 145, and who I want to see fight Urijah is Din Thomas… now I think that would be a great fight.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Jul 8, 2008 5:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Curran should have pulled it off, jeff lost Faber didn’t win. Lil evil was no where in the building that night. Torres beats bigger guys too you aint know. Faber v Din whatever compared to this fight your trippin.

by bayareasrick on Jul 9, 2008 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WHAT? Jens looked great in that fight and earned MAD respect from all MMA fans.

by ViolentMike on Jul 9, 2008 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He already had my respect but if you see older Pulver fights you know lil evil wasn’t in the building. He just let Faber throw that mile long right and blocked it with his face and Pulver never got going really. I was dissapointed in Pulvers performance to be honest but im still a Pulver fan for sure.

by bayareasrick on Jul 9, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah u said it bigmig. THat is a super fight i cannot wait for. I give it to torress also becuz if u saw his last couple fights, they were perfection. But it can go either way. Standing up wise i don’t know. I don’t think miguel could get urijah to the ground becuz of urijah’s size and wrestling ability. So i can’t really decide the winner, it just has to happen

by hamsterwheel on Jul 8, 2008 6:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Torres will MT him until Faber goes for take down and once it’s on the ground submission time done deal.

This is off topic. I’ve read this forum a long time but never posted. I’m petty new to following MMA. I’ve got a fairly extensive wrestling background but just got into watching MMA a couple years ago. My question is – I notice a lot of you guys bet on UFC matches. Do you do this through a bookie? Or, are their websites. I’ve always been leary of using websites to place bets. I wouldn’t mind throwing $25-$50 on some fights just make it interesting. Any info would help.
Thx

I don’t see how faber could take this one. Standing up faber will get killed by torres’s vicious Muay Thai. Let’s say faber goes for a take down I think it will get stuffed. Torres’s jits is top shelf on his back or on top.

Lets say Faber gets a takedown. Any little if any damage done by Faber will be paid right back with interest by Torres the guy never stops working. If it stays on the ground I see Faber getting tapped beautifully.

“newly found 1 punch KO power” are you refering to that right hand you can see coming from a mile away that he was doing with Pulver that Pulver was blocking with his face and still didn’t 1 punch KO a damn thing with? Not impressed I hope he tries that with Torres LOL.

I actually used to like Faber but he thinks he’s better than he is. Torres is hands down my favorite fighter in the WEC and he knows how good he is, THE BEST.

“super mullet and dirty mustache” comment by Faber during Torres fight, some nerve with his buttchin and “Bo Derek braids” description by announcer during Fabers fight LOL. I hope Torres bust Fabers buttchin right down the middle and FAKER looked so FAKE and ridiculous with those braids I doubt he’ll rock that EVER again.

Miguel Torres is the uncrowned #1 p4p fighter in the world! yea i said it, over anderson, gsp, penn, urijah, forrest,or even fedor! The man is unbeleivable and fighting in the quickest most faced passed division in mma. i beleive he will never lose at 135 and will be a dominate champ at 145 in the future also. in a fight beetween him and urijah faber his jiu-jitsu,stand-up, cardio, and unbeleivable determination to win would for sure break urijah the longer the fight went. Miguel is 34-1 and hes beat the one dude who beat him. And that guy won by decision. He is impossible to finish and urijah could never do it. Torres by 3rd or 4th round sub or ko for sure!!
