Dont know but he hasn’t been speaking to Rich Franklin. I predict Rhinosurgery for Irvin.

irvins a HW silva is a MW how isn’t he bigger? the guys like 240lbs walk around

by randy murders on Jul 8, 2008 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I know everyone loves Anderson, but you can’t give him the advantage in every single category. How can you not tell that Irvin is much bigger. I still expect Anderson to win, but I think it may be a bit closer than Silva’s recent fights.

by naturalshadow on Jul 8, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Irvin has mass over Silva, but their about the same in height. Silva may have more reach than Irvin. One intresting thing is out of 19 fights Irvin went to 2 decisions.. and Silva’s last decision win was in 2004..so I really doubt this fight is going the distance.

silva walks around above 200lbs, so he isnt that far off the weight. i still havent seen anyone who can dominate all aspects of this game like silva can.

The Spider is the most technical fighter I’ve ever seen, that will win him the fight.

by MikeD on Jul 9, 2008 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe they were the same drugs given to Forrest Griffen. We all saw Matt Sera KO GSP and just witnessed Forrest Griffen out point Rampage.

I’m sure EVERYONE saw that comming. I dunno fellas, Irving beating Anderson Silva isn’t beyond the realm of possiblities.

Given the underdogs of GSP vs Serra, Forrest vs Rampage, and Silva vs Irvin….of the three, I would personally think Irvin would have the best chance to win because Silva is moving up in weight.

by TABASCOsauce on Jul 8, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

TabascoSauce: I owuld have to agree about Irvin having the best chance but not because Silva is moving up in weight, simply because Irvin has more 1 punch KO capabilities than GSP and Serra!

Going against the trend – Irvin will win this fight. Not because I think it will happen, but this UFC is just too hard to predict. I might place some coin on Irvin and let it ride.

There is a reason why Anderson Silva is considered the best pound per pound fighter in the world today.

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 11:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree! Beside it being an Anderson Silva fight, the only thing that excites me about this fight is that its going to be a Muy Tai WAR. Irvin is what he is, a good striker, who can land the big shot capable of knocking out most opponents. Silva has never been KO, as a matter of fact, I have never even seen him get Rocked! Silva’s reach will be the difference and Irvin is on crack if he decides to clinch!

Silva is a strong dude, who is Huge for 185 lbs. He wont be undersized at all fighting at LHW. Basically Silva can do what ever he wants against who ever he wants!

IMO, he ha sthe best title reign in UFC history…much more impressive then Hughes’s title reign and better than Chucks because he beat tougher opponents then chuck.

Irvin has a punchers chance, which will make me bet a little bit of money on Irvin (like $20 dollars, in case he pulls off an upset it will win me about $140 dollars, its a good risk to throw away $20).

by JOhn on Jul 8, 2008 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he won’t be undersized? Are you serious? I believe he walks around at 215… name 5 people at LH that only cut 10 pounds

by kory klinger on Jul 8, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shut up already! Of course he will be a little lighter then Irvin but he wont be undersized to a point that it will make much of a difference. If u know anything about Silva you should know that he fought at 205 In Pride….In this case, Size doesnt matter! lol

by john on Jul 8, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just proving you’re a chump and the Sandman will deff have the weight advantage. Stop pretending like you know all in MMA.. don’t be mad you stunk at picking last events fights and lost a ton of money lol

by kory klinger on Jul 8, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

An undersized LHW would be someone that came into the fight weight 186 lbs. THAT is undersized. When you have to cut weight the night before weigh-ins, you are not so undersized.

And its not like Irvin is taller than him. They are the same hieght, and Silva will have the reach advantage. Come fight night, Irvin will not have more than a 5 lb weight advantage.

That is not undersized.

Hendo fighting Big Nog is undersized.

by ViolentMike on Jul 8, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty much every fighter cuts weight for a fight… most cut 10+ pounds… Silva won’t have to cut 10+ pounds.. Sandman will probably more likely be 5-10 pounds heavier come fight time.. don’t be a moron.. for a weight division that is undersized.. in a open weight fight like hendo vs nog there is no weight class so there is no undersized..

by kory on Jul 8, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How is he undersized for a weight divsion that he weighs more than????

I understand what you’re saying. Do you understand me?

We are both correct, neither are wrong.

by getrawbc on Jul 8, 2008 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha good try John but your boyfriend above says we are both right and then you say he “handled me”… really stupid.. can’t you think of anything intelligent to say? Use that GED buddy.

Anderson is undersized b/c an average 205 pound figher come fight time weighs more than what Anderson will come fight time…..period.. It’s not that hard to comprehend. I understand how you guys are trying to be 12 year olds and twist and turn it around to try to seem right, but you can’t be that stupid. By violent’s definition above then noone is undersized at all b/c they all make weight lol
lol

by kory on Jul 9, 2008 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am sorry Kory, but you lose. The fact that are throwing out the insults and name calling rather than logic shows there isn’t much for a thought process behind your argument. You can state Irvin cuts more, but that does not does not mean Silva is undersized. They are they same height and Silva has a greater reach advantage. They both weigh in at 205. The human body can only rehydrate ADEQUATELY over time and Irvin won’t get back to a weight that is far greater than the Spider.

Did you see Silva almost get KO’d by Travis Lutter??? Maybe you should actually watch that fight then post a comment…

by Arnold on Jul 8, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Almost doesn’t count.

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John’s comment said “as a matter of fact, I have never even seen him get Rocked!”

Silva was stunned and if Lutter wasn’t such and idiot he’d not let him get back up. So that is why his almost did count, because Silva was rocked.

by Arnold on Jul 8, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was taken down not knocked down. He was mounted and still didn’t get nailed with really solid shots. He certainly wasn’t stunned at any point.

by PJJ on Jul 9, 2008 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey, I am a fan of Silva, but no way in hell the fighters he has beaten as a champ are more impressive than the people Hughes and Liddell had beaten. I think liddell has probably faced the toughest opponents of anyone over his career.

by naturalshadow on Jul 8, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Liddell’s title reign consisted of wins over:

Vernon White
Randy Couture (twice)
Jeremy Horn
Babalu
Tito

Not a single one of which is ANYWHERE near the Top 10 LHW’s.

by ViolentMike on Jul 8, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, you’re right, none of them are in the top ten now. But, they were when chuck beat them (excluding White and Horn). And I agree with “naturalshadow”, chuck’s record as champion was awesome. As was Hughes’ – in fact, he is the best ufc champ ever.

Silva is dominant, and may become the best ufc champ ever, just not yet

by WADZ on Jul 8, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No WADZ: THey were top 10 in the UFC, there is a big difference than being top 10 when most of the big gunz were fighting in pRIDE.

The only top notch win for Chuck was the Randy fights, other than that not top 5 fighters, Babalu was his next biggest win (and I am a big fan of his), but he wasnt a topugh opponent like Hendo or Franklin were.

by john on Jul 8, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

franklin has been sorry as hell in his last 5 fights, wouldnt even count him as a top contender anymore…
1. crushed by silvas knees in 2 min
2. has jason macdonald mounted and complained when the bell rang that the fight shoulda been stopped, puss!
3. sparred with yushin okami for two rounds… got owned, mounted and almost submitted in the 3rd but still got a decision
4. ran away from silva for 2 rounds until getting KO’d
5. Owned by Travis Lutter round 1 and almost submitted, takes 4 minutes to finish lutter who is dead tired and standing right in front of him…

by brendan on Jul 8, 2008 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, the top ten in Pride were not the big guns of the lhw class, and I have no idea why that is not a dead issue. Quinton came over before the merger, and has so far been the only lhw from Pride to do real well. I am a big Silva fan, so I hope his beatdown of Jardine shows that he is back, but that is about it. If you look at the top 10 right now, most of the fighters originated in the UFC.

by naturalshadow on Jul 8, 2008 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Franklin is something like 22-3 with his only losses to A. Silva (generally accepted as the top p4p fighter in the world) and Machida, who is undefeated and by all rights should be the No. 1 LHW contender.

by PW on Jul 9, 2008 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hes got a punchers chance. I havent seen silva take a shot right on the jaw yet. But im gonna have to take silva by KO.

by JRV on Jul 8, 2008 11:18 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A punchers chance is right. The size difference is only in body frame. I just think that Irvin has that 1 punch KO ability and Silva doesnt. That might be the desiding factor. But as far as overall game, Silva’s got Irvin beat.

Irvin looked like a changed man when he fought houston, we didnt get to see it but he looked like he was in awesome shape and ready to go. I wouldnt be surprised if he could pull this off, he might be the best striker silva has fought since coming on board.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chase.. why did say that!!!!!!!!!??? How don’t you like Anderson Silva? He is the cream of the crop of UFC Champions..Like how Matt Hughes gets that title " The greatest UFC WW Champ ever ".. Silva is going down in history as the " The greatest UFC MW champ ever "..Silva is a class act in and out the cage.. I find it to grasp any well informed MMAfan that would not like him..unless he/she had something personnal against him.

IDK, i guess i just don’t like him since I love Franklin, And Hendo, and he Beat franklins as, No problem, and he beat Hendo, But i think hendo would take him in a rematch, I just hate him becuase he’s to good, He’s like an MMA Robot.

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude..it’s one thing to disagree on the whole Page/Forrest Drama.. but when you put Anderson Silva’s name in thre mix..that is a deep water conversation with me. Now that you expressed how you’re a big Franklin/Henderson fan..I can understand..but damn man.. Silva is too good. he is too much of class. too good of an diplomat of the sport.. I would be in tears if he would ever lose. I want him to fight for like 5 yrs at least..beat everyone he faces and retire as Champ.

For the very “few” Silva haters/doubter’s.. Size will not be a factor in this fight. Anderson trains at Black House.. he trains with the Nog brothers..he trains with Lyoto Machida..and company.

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But he trains with them, He doesn’t fight them, thats like saying how Hughes trains with silvia, so hes strong enuff, But then, He wasn’t strong enuff to take down and handle Alves. I think silva will get beat, Or atleast i want him to, so he loses this best fighter in the world thing. He needs to give hendo his rematch, and hendo needs to go balls out like he did with rampage.

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

First of all Henderson will need to earn a rematch with Silva..no more freebies for the Henderson. to compare Hughes/Tim Syliva to Anderson/Nogs:Lyoto is not a good idea. Huhges is a one dimensional fighter..always was..always will be..he had a good run..but when faced Alves..it was a reminder that his bus left the station. Silva is a complete martial artist. He is in his prime and peaking/fighting at the best of his ability. Irvin granted is top notch striker..with good enough ground to be fighting in the UFC. Silva like Fedor/Penn has an aura about him..Can anyone be beat at anytime..yep. Can Irvin beat Silva yep. Will he “NO”. Irvin can say anything he wants..but when he is alone in the octagon with Anderson Silva.. That whole " I’m going to beat him in clinch idea " yeah sure. Silva will dismantle him RD1..and if Irvin has four leafed colver in his pocket..maybe ..just maybe he’ll fall asleep by the RD2.

Phil… don’t take Chase seriously. After reading his comments on GSP/Penn and now Anderson, he’s just not making any kind of sense. I think he’s just stirring the pot for conversation or something…

by DJ on Jul 8, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

DJ, Im putting out my actuall opinions, In a rematch, i call Benn Beating Gsp, And anderson silva, i don’t like, I don’t have to like the champ likeeveryone else, My favprite fights for everyweight class in the UFC are-

155-Benn
170-Kos
185-Franklin
205-Griffin who just became champ,
And HW is a messed up division now, So I have to say Lesnar, and i will support them over anyone else they fight, Unless it;s Franklin agianst Anderson 3 becuase He’d get beat agian :(

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Grr well DJ, I basicly said, That i think Benn would take GSP in a rematch, and that I just don’t like Anderson, becuase he’s beat all my favorite fights. and that i don’t have to take sides with all the champian fighters. My favorite guys for each weightclass in the ufc are 155-Benn,170-Kos,185-Franklin,205 Griffin, Heavyweight is an ugly division now, so I have to go with lesnar, for the fact that he was an NCAA westler and He’s huge, I favor wrestlers in fights.

The third MW champ will go down as the greatest, he’s beaten better guys than Chuck? You are all smoking crack,
Franklin is a great fighter and huge for MW, owning him twice is amazing. But Lutter and Marquart were glorified fish. As doon as Silva gets in with a decent wrestler with some jits, he’s freakin toast.

by Midion on Jul 8, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hummmmm…really. Well since he drugged up Leben.. he has fought Franklin (drugged) Lutter(Tapped) Nate M (Drugged) Franklin (Drugged again) Henderson (Drugged/Tapped)..not 1 fight going the distance. All were suppose to have great wrestling/ good bjj to nulify his Muay Thai clinch right.. So your once he fights someone fights a “decent” wreslter he’s toast. What do you think of Henderson’s Wrestling I think he has pretty good wreslting. Outside the fact American MMAfans are not the ones to glorify Non-american athletes..Silva IMO is the X factor.. if you understand MMA/Fighting..you should understand Silva is the greatest UFC MW Champ Ever!

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

None of them are good wrestlers, The MW Division has no great standout wrestler like 155 has Sherk, and 170 has Kos, 205-Hammil, and HW- lesnar, Middleweight is a bunch of strikers and alright wrestlers, Hendo is the best in MW, but didn’t fight smart.

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt is an outstanding grappler and he lost to silva. henderson is a phenomenal wrestler with decent jits and he lost. Are you expecting some unkown super human breed of John Smith and Gracie genes to come out take him down and submit him? The problem is the fight starts standing. The best grappler is about half as good after Silva hits him and stunns him.

by James S on Jul 8, 2008 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chase : you are making circles around the " Point ".. Anderson Silva is the best UFC MW Champ ever.. Why make excuses for Henderson, he had enough time to put together and enforce his game plan, as all Silva’s victims did. Your bias on your views and opinions of Silva.. When Silva druggs up Irvin.. what excuse will you put together to discredit Silva’s win??

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im not saying hendo is the mest in middle weight, i ment he was the best wrestler in midle weight. I neevr said he wasn’t the best champ ever at MW. he won’t beat Irvin. If he does, and it’s by a KO, and not a TKO, I’ll give him his credit, But still aways want the guy he’s fighting to win.

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forrest definitely had a chance against Rampage. For months before the fight, I said Forrest’s only way to win would be by decision – he would have to outwork Rampage from the outside. There were a good amount of people on here saying Forrest would win, and on UFC.com, the fans had it even right before the fight. Man, wish I could have gotten those odds because I would have only lost like 1/3 of what I actually did…

I am just surprised at how many people are PICING Irvin to win the fight. Can he? Sure, anyone has a punchers chance. But the advantage HAS to be to Anderson. That’s all. No hard feelings.

Plenty of people push forward but like the Fedor of old when you go to hit a guy and he keeps coming at you throwing precise bombs, you will back up. That’s the problem is that nobody can get Silva to play their game. Lutter had it close but he’s a bum so he lost it. Franklin is least off of all cause Silva is better at it than Franklin. Also I think Franklin and Hendo could easily dispatch a James Irvin I don’t see how Silva could not. James is not the greatest fighter he never learned how to fight safe and against Silva thats a dumb thing to do. Just wait for Okami, he’s the best bet of anyone to beat Silva at least for MW.

Okami will “NOT” beat Silva.. did you see what happened to Okami in their first fight.. Oh it was an illegal kick.. whatever.. Silva Ko’d him from his guard. No one at 185 currently will beat Silva.

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you, Okami will lose, unless he gets lucky, I see hendo beating him in a rematch, I just love hendo, I like it when it was like the thing they do before a UFC, I forgot what there called, and i think it was Couture that said he was like a Badass cowboy.

the Okami fight is gonna 5 full rounds.
Okami has a good chin, the guy is also strong and well rounded.
I just hope he gets his oppportunity

by PhilQNY on Jul 8, 2008 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anderson Silva is like the Zohan. He can kick you in the face while standing a foot in front of you. That is what happened in the Okami fight. From guard he kicked a guy, who was on his knees, in the face and knocked him out. That is unbeleivable.

Not being allowed to kick a guy in the face from your back is the dumbest rule in MMA.

by DonnyG on Jul 8, 2008 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okami is real that was an illegal shot..cuz he was trying to pass Anderson guard..and one point he kneeled in his guard at the same time Anderson shot his leg over and in his face. If Okami wasn’t on his knees.. it would of been legal.. but I agree with you.. if your dumb enough to allow someone to knock you out from their back..then you deserved to get knocked out.

Chase, I must say, the one thing I’m with you on is being a big Hendo fan!

Also, you’re referring to the “UFC Countdown” show. Couture also said that Dan has gorilla grip in his hands, meaning once he grabs onto you, you can’t get him off.

I’m not all biased VM, and yeah that was the show, i think someone said he was like a cowboy from the movies though. I just don’t think anyone can be classifed as the best fighter in the world, and It makes me mad that Some people call him that.

I don’t know why everyone thinks Silva jumping up in weight will be that big of a deal. Irvin won’t be taller or longer, just a little heavier. Silva might have a tough time with guys like Chuck, Wanderlei, Rampage, and now we need to include Forrest to that list. But Irvin still has a lot too prove and he will just end up being another one of Anderson’s brutal TKO victims.

by BNF on Jul 8, 2008 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Irvin is going to push the Spider more than any of his last couple of opponents as far as stand up goes. You guys will be surprised because Irvin throws with a lot of power and he has been training hardcore at Fairtex, Thailand. If I was Anderson, I would play him smart and take him to the ground. A Muay Thai exchange is exactly what Irvin wants and pretty much the only way he’ll win.

by bostonmmajunkie on Jul 8, 2008 11:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see size being a factor in this one. Irvin doesn’t look any bigger tha Silva to me. I think this fight might actually make it into the 2nd round but I think Silva will catch him at some point and it will be another tko for him.

by brac on Jul 8, 2008 11:58 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good call if you compare Franklin to Wandy you can clearly see Franklin is a big dude. I think that Franklin and Silva are probably decent sized LHW’s.

by Smokes on Jul 8, 2008 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well it sounds like Irvin is willing to stand and throw with Silva so it should be a very exciting fight for about 2 mins. It is hard to bet against Silva after his domination of the middleweight division but you never know in MMA.

Irvin is a great striker as well. This should be a really good fight and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sandman takes this one.

I can’t believe they offered this fight to 205 pounders other than Irvin. He seems like the perfect opponent here. The dude always puts on an entertaining slugfest. This interview certainly made it sound like he intended to do that again here. I think he’s going to go down hard, but he’ll go down swinging. Should be a fun free fight.

I think Irvin has a chance and I can’t wait to watch this video at home. Irvin is a solid striker and he can take a punch. I think he’s strong for a LHW…He did compete in HW division for a while in WEC (I know, not the UFC). I agree with the other posters…This will be a Muay Thai WAR!!!

I can see Irvin getting TKO’d on a kick. If he throws any lazy kicks he can get caught with a punch. He has a bad habit of dropping his hands a little when he throws leg kicks. I just hope that he’s fixed it. I meant to check out his training video on Youtube from Thailand but I forgot to last night. Otherwise I can see Irvin get in trouble if Silva wants to take it to the ground, if Silva doesn’t get it down quick Irvin will fill him in trying to get the takedown.

by Shadyone33 on Jul 8, 2008 12:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Irvin has balls of steal i give him that much.He is a hard worker always in good shape and can strike with power I reckon he has a good chance if he has a good game plan.I do think he is bigger than Silva as he has fought at HW in the past but don’t think this has much impact against Silva.

Hey we just saw Forrest beat Rampage with less tools than Irvin has against a guy the majority of us thought would walk through him.

Just hope its a war which it promises to be!

For those who say andersons chin has yet to be tested watch the franklin fights again. franklin landed 2 or 3 good shots and anderson just took them. just cause you havent seen him get rocked doesnt mean he hasnt been hit.

by doomdoom on Jul 8, 2008 12:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Franklin isn’t known for his Koing, expect for Nate Quarry Really, and one or 2 from him means nothing, and he’s my favorite at 185 and im saying this, One or 2 means nothing anyway if they don’t have serious knockout power. and I think Irvin Does. So he will test his chin, and the other way around also.

by Chase on Jul 8, 2008 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Silva will just put the pressure on irvin like he did to rich both times. Rich is a big guy too at 185. so its not like A.S will have any problems with that. but if it turns into a slugfest then i think its anyones game. though im sure Silvas Punches are going to connect way more than Irvin’s. he is a crisp striker and accurate as hell

by WickedAwesome on Jul 8, 2008 12:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Does anyone think that fighting at 205 will have any significant effect on Silva’s speed? If his strikes are a bit slower than usual due to his heavier weight at fight time, that could make a big difference in a pure striking battle.

by cmon on Jul 8, 2008 12:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Everyone said Forest didn’t stand a chance either. Irvin’s definitely got the tools, I just think Silva has more. Even if Silva’s speed is slowed down a bit, which I don’t think it will, his accuracy is what kills his opponents. Nearly every shot he throws lands in the right spot at the right time. If Irvin can avoid Silva’s clinch and block his high kicks, he has a chance standing. On the ground could be another story. I’ve never really seen what Irvin has on the ground, but we know Silva can take a beating (vs Lutter), keep going and then catch you.

by VNDK8 on Jul 8, 2008 12:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lutter has nowhere near the power of irvin, and he don’t have the gas he’s a bum

I agree. Regardless, if you take elbows the the head, no matter who they are being delivered by, it still hurts like hell and it didn’t seem to phase Silva.
I really don’t know who is going to win this fight and with the way fights have gone lately, I wouldn’t dare say the Silva will demolish Irvin. Irvin will be taking this fight VERY seriously. If he defeats Silva, he will move up the ladder quite a bit. Regardless of the fact that Silva is moving up a weight class, he is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

if they get in the clinch andersons gonna lose james is a MUCH stronger guy say what you want about how badass anderson is but james is the real deal and he’s different now and HEALTHY i see him taking this fight then showing thiago silva he got lucky, and getting his ass kicked by forrest in a title shot..

on a side note whats the deal with forrest’s opponents ending up with knee injuries (first bonnar, then shogun, then rampage, not sure about sinosic) i find that one funny

I’m all up for allowing everone have their say but come on mate, saying a bad word about Silva is like blogging suicide!

That being said i think Irvin is underated and this is a fantastic opportunity for him, he has heavy hands and this weekend has taught us, don’t write anyone off.

I train MMA and (believe me it aint gonna happen) if i made it to the big leagues i would want to fight the absolute best and be expected to loose. Perfect opportunity to leapfrog many in the pecking order, if you get knocked out… so what, so did everyone else!

However i can’t see anything other than Silva just picking him off in an exibition of striking.

Silva said in an interview that he’ll not compete at LHW, it’s probably only gonna be this time. Looks like it’s cool nowadays to hate the best guy. I don’t know what’s up with that. He’s been so dominant that some people will give gatekeepers like Irvin huge chance of winning this (Chase specially). Silva is not Houston Alexander or Terry Martin. He will surgically pick Irvin apart, like he did to everybody else in the UFC.

Exactly. Anderson basically gave up the first round to test and feel Hendo out. When the bell sounded Hendo was winded going back to his corner. Silva came out 2nd RD all business. He was one step ahead of Dan the whole time like a python circling his prey.

Irvin needs to stay where he is at. LHW. He can try to move down to MW..but with the same arguement that he has for Silva moving up..can be referred to him moving down.. For him. While I will agree that Silva is stronger than he looks, there is no way he is as strong as Irvin. Also while 20lbs might not seem like much to us its a big difference to an athlete who has his body conditioned to fight at 185. I’m not saying Silva will be slow by any means, just slower than usual.

I’m not a pro athlete by any stretch, but when I was still in the Army I was about 20-25lbs lighter than I am now(200-220). I can feel a big difference in my speed and quickness when it comes to participating in athletics.

Just my 2 cents…

by sooper822 on Jul 8, 2008 2:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good post Sooper I agree with you on that. If he stays close to his walk around weight for this fight and doesn’t try to cut a little it will affect his quickness.

I think he shouldn’t weigh in over 200 lbs. otherwise it could sacrifice his quickness. We all know that has been his bread and butter the last couple of years.

Ok ok Silva is the man at 185 well known it’s also well known he walks around at 193-195 because he stays there. The sandman before the alexander fight was walking around at 243 so it’s simple math someone cutting 40 lbs vs. someone going up 10. Silva will be in better shape as he will only have to increase his cardio. And yes I said cardio no one has taken him deep into a fight and even though I don’t see Irvin doing it still to keep your level of game up at 12lbs higher will be a challenge although by far the best fighter. something to think about.

I wish they would just have an open weight Grand Prix fight and then we wouldn’t have to stipulate who the best pound-for-pound fighter was. Those were my favorite fights to watch in Pride.

Ultimately, there is no perfect fighter in the world. Aa of yet at least. Odds are that if you keep on fighting, eventually you will lose. Now I know Silva’s odds are significantly higher than other UFC fighters odds, but I think this fight has potential for an upset.

My prediction : No way is it gonna go 3 rounds; no way are we going to see another Flying Scissors Heel Hook that submits Silva; but maybe…just maybe we will see Irvin win by KO. Silva is way too small for 205. Now 185 down to 170, thats practical. But the jump 205 is different b/c he’s messing with a whole different type of punching power. You never see 185 lbs.ers have knockouts like 205 lbs.ers

by DaneJa260 on Jul 8, 2008 3:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Open wieght tourney’s are the greatest. However, it doesn’t necessarily tell you who the best lb for lb fighter is. For example, Urijah Faber vs Brock Lesnar. If they fought, Brock Lesnar would squoosh him into a bug. But that does not mean that Lesnar is a better lb for lb fighter than Faber.

by ViolentMike on Jul 8, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True. Let me reword that. It would determine who is the best fighter in the world. Forget I even mentioned lb. for lb. That will never be decided. Its purely opinionated and the weight factor will always leave room for speculation.

Watching Cro Cop vs. Wanderlei was one of my favorite fights from Pride. Having a Grand Prix tournament every year would only make the UFC even better. Well that and head kicks to a downed opponent. I enjoy watching the Brazilians and Europeans displaying their soccer skills in MMA.

by MMA040 on Jul 8, 2008 4:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think this fight will be determined by Silva’s weight cut. Will he be the same fighter at whatever weight he decides?
Will he come in at 186 making his final cut like a MW fight? That makes this fight much like an open-weight GP fight.
Will he cut a couple of lbs from his walk-around weight to 205?
Will he cut all but the last 24 hour water cut and come in around 195-198?

He still has to defend his MW belt in a few months. This isn’t even a catch-weight. Silva is going to fight a true 205er.
I suspect he will train for a MW fight, but just won’t make the final cut. That may be a plus…imagine not having to do the last 24!

Irvin got an awesome knockout but that doesn’t make him that dangerous IMO. Houston Alexander had his highlight reel against jardine but he turned out to be a bum in this division. Irvin will have a long night if all he does is keep on looking for that single punch. It’s very difficult to get into Anderson’s reach to throw a big bomb like this (he’s never been hit hard by anyone).

for real irvin has never beat anyone with cred.

i like Silva but i would like to see Irvin win.

I don’t see size being too big a factor. I think I saw something somewhere about James considering moving down to 185 so there can’t be too much of a size disparity.

thats the only attitude to have, cause 9 chances out of 10 the spider eats him alive

irvins right hand is going to end this hype train just like he ended houston alexanders

Difference, Anderson has a chin, Houston does not. I see the Sandman sleeping by the second.

I’m speculating Silva will win. Though I’m kind of hoping Irvin does better than most expect him to, at least to mix things up a little. On the other hand if Irvin surprised everyone with a win we may never see silva take on Lidell, Shogun or some other LHW’s. Mostly I just want to see a good war instead of a one sided ass kicking.

Dang man did you guys see Anderson’s fight with LW Mach Sakarai? Sakarai is a beast, I gained so much respect for him in that fight. The dude is awesome. Off subject I know.

I dunno bout u guys, but I want to see Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida fight. They both seem unbeatable. Lets see it!

by RyanHobbs on Jul 8, 2008 10:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would love to see that fight. Personally, I think Anderson would wipe the floor with Machida. The only real advantage that Machida seems to have against his competitors is speed, and Anderson would take that right away.

Me too. It would be the most technical striking match in MMA history. However, they train together and have said that they would never fight each other…

Irvin will knock Silva out. Have you forgotten the Chonan and Takase fights??? Silva is beatable, and he will soon feel the sting of Irvin’s flying knee or superman punch.

Silva will get embarrassed against Irvin. You will see.

by Surfbum on Jul 8, 2008 11:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

you are crazy ok he WAS beatable but in dont think he is anymore you think irvin can win via flying scisor heel hook or get anderson silva in a triangle i dont think so cmon dude none is even rocked silva

by jow32 on Jul 8, 2008 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Takase fight was just strange, Silva looked off that day, but that Chonan fight was probably the best sub win I have ever seen.

by naturalshadow on Jul 9, 2008 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He will get beat sooner or later and its going to be at 205.

by alex on Jul 8, 2008 11:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Silva already said in an interview that he does not plan to continue fighting at 205. He’s only doing because Dana and the UFC needed him to do so, so they could compete with Affliction, and even if he stayed at 205 he also said that he would never face Lyoto Machida, they are buddies and training partners. So this will be a one time for him. That’s too bad because he could have a lot of awesome fights as a LHW.

by Cristiano from Brazil on Jul 9, 2008 1:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you there, i don’t like him, but soon he will run out of fights at 185, then he would have to go to 205, unless some one in 185 he hasn’t fought yet has his number.

IRVIN IS DREAMING IF HE THINKS HE IS GOING TO WIN THIS FIGHT IN THE CLINCH. HAHA IF HE GETS IN THE CLINCH, SILVA WILL WIN THIS FIGHT. IRVIN, KEEP THE CLINCH OUT OF YOUR GAME PLAN. YOUR CRAZY IF THATS THE APPROACH YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE INTO THE FIGHT. WATCH SOME OF SILVA’S FIGHTS.. SILVA’S CLINCH = DEATH

FLYING SCISSOR HEEL HOOK…. SILVA MUST NOT BE HAPPY WITH HIS PAYDAYS SINCE HE IS CALLING OUT ROY JONES. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE PURSES FOR THE GRIFFIN RAMPAGE FIGHT.. I THOUGHT THEY WOULD BOTH AT LEAST GET A CHIP.. BUT THEY BOTH GOT WELL BELOW 500K.. KIDS, TRAIN FOR BOXING. YOU MAY HATE THE SPORT, BUT THE PAYDAYS KICK UFC ASS. AND THE UNDERCARD GUYS PURSES WERE COMICAL..
