UFC Quick Quote: Patrick Cote earns title shot with UFC 86 win over Ricardo Almeida

"The fight was boring. The reality is when there are two guys who are really good at different things, and guys who have different game plans, that’s sometimes what happens."
-- UFC President Dana White tells NBCSports.com that even though Patrick Cote's win over Ricardo Almeida last night was boring, it was good enough to earn him a future title shot against 185-pound killer, Anderson Silva. However, "The Predator" may have to take a ticket and wait in line -- Silva fights James Irvin in two weeks and there is speculation that Yushin Okami might be teed up for "The Spider" at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" on September 6.

Why not let him and Bisping go at it to decide who gets to lose to Anderson Silva. Neither of these guys are real contenders anyway…

Okami and Cote vs. Silva sound lame. I know Bisping is unproven at 185, but at least that would be interesting.

Are you kidding me. Cote has a better chance than anyone. Niether Silva or Cote go out of their way to take the fight to the ground. It will be a stand up war. If you think Silva will quickly KO Cote, think again. Cote has the best chin in MMA (yes better than Nogs, Nog stays awake, but he gets rocked). Cote doesn’t even flinch when he gets hit. On top of that , Cote is a master at not taking punishment. I don’t think I have ever seen a mark on his face, let alone a cut. It’s a dangerous fight for Cote, but it’s also dangerous for Silva, because Cote just has to touch his chin once and the fight could be over. No matter who wins, this fight will be fireworks.

Hm… Chris Leben vs. Michael Bisping… that kinda rings a bell.

I have come to the conclusion that pure the classic grappler vs. striker match ups should be outlawed in the UFC when the fighters are not well rounded and have to much on the line because time and time again we see those fights become boring! I liked the strategy early in the fight but as the fight went on we saw, 1 guy scared to punch because he was worried about being taken down, and the other fighter scared to strike because he was afraid of getting kO…Not very exciting if you ask me. When guys are not well rounded and there is a lot riding on the fight, I hope to NEVER again see a Grapper vs. Striker match up!
Most impressive fighter of the night, to me was Gleison Tibau!

Tibau lost. he looked good up till he got caught. i dont get this one. do you know something i dont? thats 2 losses in a row for him.
by b.w on Jul 6, 2008 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was impressed with Tibau because I never knew that he was only 24 years old! He fought stevenson who just fought for the lightweight title and was very much in the fight until he lost the mount trying to be Flashy with a mounted triangle. I guess I am so impressed with him because I never realized how big of a lightweight he is and for some strange reason I thought he was some old 34 year old man (looks old when he had the goofy curly hair), but he is only 24….This guy will be a problem in the future because his skills are there!

COTE WILL KO THE EXTREMELY OVER-RATED SPIDERMAN IN FIRST ROUNDER…. PERIOD!

HAHAH THIS IS A JOKE!!!! Im 100 per cent sure this very very average Cote would get tko’d in a round from Bisping? the guy has no super knock out power its a fantasy!

Most of cotes wins are by ko, i think Cote would walk through Bisping, Bisping is the most overated fighter in the Ufc, he fights nobodys. Leben will kill him.

I second that, Bisping would get mauled by cote.

I third that, Bisping is definitely an overrated fighter.

Here is a 5th, unless Michael Bisping becomes a world class wrestler and BJJ artist, and he does a flying gogoplata… I’m taking Cote.

Yeah, Cote with all his “Power” went to a decsion. Even Dana said the fight was boring. Cote is being put in front of Silva because it will be an easy win for Silva with Silva not getting hurt or picking up any injuries.
Silva wants to fight another 3 or 4 times this year and fighting Cote will bring in another payday for UFC and keep Silva fresh to fight again.
by UKmmaBOY on Jul 7, 2008 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would like to see Cote vs Bisping. Many people above are saying that Cote would whoop Bisping. However, these are some of the same people that say that Leben has no chance against Bisping.
NEWSFLASH: Leben has beaten Cote.
Bisping just came down from 205, but I still think that Cote would be the bigger fighter.
I say, give Okami his title shot finally.
Then have winner of Leben/Bisping fight Cote for the #1 contender spot.

That was an extremely close fight. They just kind of ended in stale mate. Cote was one of my picks so I’m happy I guess.
by c-war on Jul 6, 2008 11:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Round 1 – Almedia
Round 2 – was very close until Cote clipped Almeida at the end of the round. Round 2 – Cote
Round 3 – Almeida just quit. Then with 30 seconds left, he remember he was in a fight and actually SHOT in for a takedown and got it with ease. IF he did that earlier in the round, he could have gotten the win.
“One of your picks”? Where, in your free fantasy league??? No one cares, bet some cash if you are so sure of yourself.
by ViolentMike on Jul 7, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cote deserves his shot, he’s earned it, when bisping wins 5 in a row and beats an amazing fighter like Almeida than you can brag about how good your boyfriend bisping is, seriously why bring his name up he sucks and cote would destory him? Cote should be ahead of Okami for a shot, Cote should face Silva in Sept/Oct okami should face Leites or someone for his shot.
by Macho Bullshit on Jul 6, 2008 11:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree, just like Lyoto Machida not getting a title fight, Yushin Okami should not get one neither. He has only faced Evan Tanner and Jason Macdonald since his loss to Rich Franklin, and the Jason fight was one of the worst fights in the history of the UFC.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Jul 6, 2008 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But Machida still should get his title shot. I’m very disturbed about the ongoing trend in the UFC shuning guys who deserve title shots beceause they’re not big names. Guy like Machida, Okami and Jardine, who are all super tough competitors getting jipped out of title shots beceause they can’t sell ppv’s. As much as I love newly crowned light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (he’s one of my favorite fighters) there is absolutley no way I can justify him getting the shot at the title. Granted he is the champion now and he earned that title he probibly shouldn’t have been there. Guys like Keith Jardine who beat Forrest and beat Chuck Liddell probibly deserve that shot more. My point is Okami and Machida should get their title shots, they’ve earned it.
by DB on Jul 6, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Now I agree with the Lyoto Machida comment on how he should get a title shot, because he has earned it. He has defeated everybody in his way to get to that title. On the other hand, Yushin Okami has not done enough to warrant a title shot. He lost to Rich Franklin, defeated Jason MacDonald in a complete snore-fest and defeated a 2 year rusted Evan Tanner by TKO. Now, in all honesty, I think you have to win 3 straight or defeat a top 5 guy to be garnished a title shot, and Yushin has not done that.
Lyoto has won I think 5 straight in the UFC, and he defeated a top 5 guy in Tito Ortiz. He should be able to get the first title shot.
Forrest Griffin deserved the title shot, just because there was nobody else other than Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida that had notable winning streaks in that division. Also Forrest Griffin defeated the top ranked light heavyweight in Shogun Rua, injured or not. He defeated him, so he earned the chance to fight Rampage.

no one is underestimating keith even dana has stated that but with his inconsistantcies against agressive strikers like houston and wanderlei do not warrant a shot.
Machida aint gettin a shot because he just barely won against tito and im sry to say but tito aint top ten anymore, machida would have to beat at least a top 5 like rua, wandy, quintin, or chuck to get a legitiamate shot.
As for Okami he is getting his shot at ufc 88, although it is only being done to clear up a blemish on silvas mw record.
by Colin D on Jul 6, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okami deserves his title shot. He has beaten everyone they put in front of him with the exception of Franklin. He’s 6-1 in the UFC, not to mention that he holds a pervious DQ win over Anderson Silva. That makes for a good fight, because Silva will be looking to avenge his loss. Okami has a KO, TKO, and a submission in 3 of those wins. Sure, sometimes his fights can be boring, but he has proven that he can finish a fight. Okami deserves it.
Machida I feel like needs to win one more fight against a a Top guy. He has wins over Tito, Sokoudjou, and Nakamura, but he needs to fight a Jardine, Wandy, or a Shogun to get put in the title mix at 205. With the exception of Sokoudjou, Machida hasn’t finished any of his fights. He’s a classic Unanimous Decision. In order to get a shot at the 205 title, he has to either beat someone more established and in their prime, or start winning decisively.
by Cool Hand Chad on Jul 6, 2008 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well see, who has Yushin Okami defeated that is a top guy? Evan Tanner surely is not. The only person I can think of is Mike Swick at UFC 69 when both of them were top 5 middleweights at the time. Lyoto has defeated everybody the UFC has thrown at him as well, winning 5 straight, and he defeated a former champion and a top tier fighter. Yushin lost to a top tier fighter in Rich Franklin. So its kinda confusing when you say Lyoto does not deserve a title shot but Yushin does.

Boetsh vs James Lee

No way Silva loses to Okami. Okami beat Silva by DQ a few years ago when Okami refused to continue after an illegal kick. Silva was pissed because he thought Okami was just taking a cheap win. When they get in the cage Silva is going to torture Okami just to make a point.

The fact that you just dispelled all these amazing fights is insane to me.
Did the UFC take money out of your pocket or something? Did Dana White steal your girlfriend?
UFC 88 is definitely a stacked card that could potentially have some classics on there!
I’m with you Colin D, UFC 88 is going to be fucking crazy!

Overall, very disappointing to me because I don’t like the matchups. I would much rather see Franklin fight Henderson, preferably at 205. The implications would be much more interesting than Hamil and Palhares, who are further from a title shot than other contenders.

The whole “winner of Cote vs Almeida gets a title shot” is ridiculous. I’m a Cote fan and picked him to win the fight, but neither of these guys is ready or deserving just yet. As far as the title fight goes, Cote is going to get ruined by Silvas knees. Almeida would have made for the better fight just cause his jits is so good. But, he’d eventually get ruined as well.
I say, get the Silva vs Okami rematch taken care of. If (when) Anderson comes out on top, throw Bisping in there at him. It’s not like Bisping isn’t ready. He’s got plenty of fights under his belt, and he’s the next best 185’er in the UFC. Quit throwin chumps like Leben his way and let him test himself with Silva, Franklin at the very least.
And I agree Colin, UFC 88 is looking to be real good. Lot of good fighters. I havent seen anything about Silva vs Okami goin down on that card though. I’d like to see Hendo get a better fight than Pahares, and apparently so does he. I really would like to see Hendo vs Rampage again. That was a great fight. Winner gets a title shot.

if bisping can get past leben put him against winner of henderson/palhares for immediate title shot, cote is not ready unless silva looses to okami or gets fucked up in the irvin fight.
by Colin D on Jul 6, 2008 2:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I say Bisping still has not earned that right to get a title shot. I think the winner of this fight should get the Henderson/Palhares winner as you stated, or they get Rich Franklin if he defeats Matt Hamill and drops back down. Also remember Nate Quarry still has no opponent, and he had a very good win over Kalib Starnes and Pete Sell.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Jul 6, 2008 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont think Cote should get a title shot right now, as there are a few people in line in front of him that warrant a title shot first. Henderson being one. But I think Bisping should get the first crack after Okami. Bisping has done nothing but be impressive. his only loss was to Evans at 205, and that was a split decision. Bisping beats Leben. Give him a shot. Winner of that one fights Hendo. Put Cote up against one of the above who lost a fight to Anderson (Bisping, Okami, or whoever) if he continues to win, give him his shot. But, he’s not ready just yet.
And, good chin or not, Patrick Cote would get demolished in Anderson clinch. Bisping and Hendo are the only guys I see that even have a shot at beating Anderson, and if Wanderlei comes down, frick, there’s a war.
by Craig on Jul 6, 2008 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bisping would get owned by Henderson. No question about it. But I think Leben knocks out Bisping anyway.
by Cool Hand Chad on Jul 6, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
See you started off good untill you said Bisping should get a crack after Yushin if he defeats Leben. Michael Bisping has only fought 1 top tier fighter and that was Rashad Evans and he lost. He should of lost to Hamill, but we will leave it at that. When you fight fighters like Charles McCarthy, Elvis Sinosic, Eric Schafer, Josh Haynes, Jason Day, you should be able to beat them. But he has not done enough nor fought top competition at all. If he defeats Leben, good for him, he defeat a top 10 middleweight. But he needs a top 5 middleweight to get that shot. Cote defeated Ricardo Almeida, who was a top 5 middleweight fighter before last night. Now Cote has moved into that number 5 spot. Scott Smith, Drew McFedries, Kendall Grove (Top 10 Middleweight UFC WISE) and Ricardo Almeida (Top 5 UFC Middleweight) so I think Cote has got that right to fight the champ next.

Get off Bisping’s nuts. Almeida was a top 5 fighter in the middleweight division before his loss to Patrick Cote. Cote is now a top 5 middleweight fighter, and actually has fought tough competition unlike Michael Bisping who should be 0-2 in his “tough” competition. I mean seriously, Charles McCarthy? Elvis Sinosic? Jason Day? SERIOUSLY? At least Cote has defeated a top 5 fighter.

I’m glad for Patrick, but I think he’s gonna get smoked. I think in time he’d maybe have a chance, but I think they’re feeding him to Anderson when he’s not ready. He should fight someone else before he fights for a title, not because he doesn’t deserve it, but because Patrick keeps improving and he could use an extra fight to develop his skills.
I wonder if it’ll be like Rocky IV though. St. Pierre corners Cote and watches him get smoked and then St. Pierre fights Silva to avenge him…
If he dies…he dies.

cote has no chance. he isnt lean, he has his right hand but angainst silva, that isnt enough. they should have given cote bisping, bisping seems to be the best looking at 185 to knock silva off. he is looking promising and with a few more fights, he will be ready. i know bisping has only had 2 fights at 185 but he has ripped through his first 2 opponents. cote/okami against silva no chance!

This Bisping praise is utterly DISGUSTING! Bisping, is a weasel, who looked good against guys like Day and McCarthy that aren’t even TUF tryout material. Bisping did OK against Rashad…because RASHAD BLOWS! (Sorry I forgot about those incredible victories over Sean Salmon and an amateur giant Brad Imes…sarcasm*)…Ive met Bisping in real life at the MGM. Ever notice how hes listed at 6’2? He’d be lucky to crack 5’10 1/2 seriously…all his opponents except Evans coem out listed shorter and yet tower him by 2-4 inches!?? Don’t sleep or hate on Leben….He whooped Cote, he whooped a “once” dangerous Terry Martin and Alessio Sakara showing a GREAT chin. No, Leben is not a world beater but he is definately top 5 MW. Bisping will break his little fists on Lebens giant dome. Lebens beard alone makes him a viable contender to everyone not named Anderson Silva or Dan Henderson.
