so bj is going to face the winner of huerta/florian and then if he wins then he will face the winner of gsp/fitch?
what about thiago alves’ title shot?

That bloated f*ck needs to make weight to fight for a title. He needs at least one more fight to even be considered for a title fight. BJ Penn poses a serious threat to GSP. As much as I like GSP I would have to say that a fight between them two would be a toss up.

Hey sorry to be off topic – but ESPN is reporting that Andre Arlovski is going to be going to have his debut boxing match in September!

Off topic sorry….. Why would he do that? considering in IMO he has a very weak chin. Wouldn’t boxers be an even bigger threat to him?
by Robert on Jul 5, 2008 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Arlovski has a weak chin? Why because Tim Sylvia Ko’ed him once? r u kidding me?
His chin has held up countless times in mma against Heavyweights wearing 4 ounce gloves, and u r worried about him getting kO’ed against Boxers wearing pilows on their hands? Get a clue!
by john on Jul 5, 2008 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually Tim didn’t even KO him, he only knocked him down and that was with AA’s 240 lbs running in to meet Sylvia’s fist. When refering to AA and weak chins, worry about his opponents chin. His power makes all chins weak.

Alves had a title shot? He’s supposed to face Diego. If he can make weight and beat Diego, then he deserves a shot.

When did Alves have a title shot? Also, BJ deserves a rematch with GSP long before Alves deserves a fight with him. BJ would whup his *ss.

I think everyone saw this one coming a long time ago. That match would be FIRE!!! Imagine if at the same time you had whoever lhw champ is vs Andersson Silva.
History would be made twice in one night.
However I’m not sure how good for the sport title unification would be. I mean unless that fighter agrees to fight constantly it seems like we would have to wait long periods of time to see each belt being defended. Especially when you consider trainning and resting time
by Holdin_Ropes on Jul 4, 2008 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No worries, BJ will never win another belt as long as GSP and Anderson Silva are in the UFC. They will still be great fights and they should happen.
by Gord on Jul 5, 2008 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i will keep saying this, when bj has his cardio and his body in total control when he fights, there is no one that is better! not GSP, not anderson, not anybody! bj only beats himself with his lazyness to train and eat better at times. But how DOMINATING have we seen him be when he takes his fights seriously. And i will keep saying this…
Anderson silva is the one who still has more to prove imo and is the one out of the 3 (GSP,BJ) that hasnt fought those legendary fighters/fights (except hendo) to prove himself against yet. I dont consider rich (twice), marquardt and some of the guys hes fought (so far) to be that proven or legendary. But im a fan of anderson, so im hoping with some fights at 205 he can accomplish that because hes def an entertaining fighter. time will tell and we will start seeing if his domination is truly legit when he starts fighting the rampages, wandis, lyotos, lidells etc. first things first, and thats a showdown w/ the sandman!!!!

What leads you to believe this? Is it because GSP and Silva would RAPE Sherk in 1 or 2 rounds and BJ took 3 and only really looked DOMINANT in the last few seconds. What’s with all the IF’S with BJ fans? If GSP didn’t lose 2 fights he would be unbeaten. The truth is , GSP did lose 2 fights and BJ has been LAZY and INCONSISTANT, so PLEASE lose the IF’S. The only IF BJ fans should use is, IF BJ can beat GSP or Silva then they can say he is better.
by Gord on Jul 5, 2008 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you need to pay more attention to what we are saying. the ifs are exactly what we are talking about. the fact that “if” anderson were to fight better contenders, we would be ablr to see if hes legit or just a little overhyped w being praised as one of the best ever at this point.
by blah on Jul 6, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You mean like Pulver and Stevenson, or does Silva have to lose to guys like GSP and Hughes. If Tank Abbott didn’t suck and he was a great fighter he would be a champion. To say if BJ did this, this and this is pointless until he does it, because you could say if’s about anyone.

Read what NOgueira’s Website about Couture:
“Minotauro Nogueira became the first person to ever hold the heavyweight title in both Pride FC and the UFC.When comparing Nogueira, to whom many consider the greatest fighter of all time, there is no comparison. Randy Couture’s 16-8-0 record does not stand up with Nogueira’s considering Couture has half the amount of victories and double the amount of losses. Defeats against people like Mikhail Illoukhine, Valentijm Overeem and even Ricco Rodriguez are scars on Couture’s record which cannot be removed.” This is from Team Nogueira, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Minotauro
He is completely Right! Couture isnt half the heavyweight Legend that Nogeuira is! when u think about Couture, u think “UFC Legend”, when u think Nogueira, u think “MMA LEGEND” Thats the difference and its a really big 1. IMO its not even an argument that both Fedor and Nogueira are more accomplished heavyweighst than Couture and I do not think that Randy could beat either one of them!

I know I’m kind of a jokester on here, so when I do actually analyze something it isn’t given too much weight. But I’VE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR AGES NOW!!! Couture is NOT the greatest fighter of all time. He is to be admired for his accomplishments, but he should never have received the title shot against Sylvia, especially after coming off back to back losses.
by chefdaddy on Jul 4, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
but then again, you cant consider nogueira to be really too far ahead of randy when he too has had some not so dominating fights. He SHOULD have lost against herring and was completely getting destroyed by tim until he got caught of course. randy did dominate tim on the other hand. i admire both though when nogueira gets on his rant about (no comparison), hes not fooling too many. FEDOR IS OBVIOUSLY TOPS though, especially if he beats timmy.
by blah on Jul 4, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Chefdaddy, I completely agree! THe order of the top 3 is actuall very simple, I dont see it as a debate at all!
1)Fedor (THe best)
2)Nog
3)Couture
I dont even thionk that this order can be argued against. Its pretty clear cut in my eyes. July 19th will further prove it!

I’d argue that Randy maybe isn’t even 3rd. I bet at least a couple of UFC LHW’s could beat Randy, never mind a fit Timmy, Big foot or Barnett.
by MoonUK on Jul 4, 2008 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Randy DOMINATED Tim in ALL areas of the fight. Nog was getting DESTROYED (contrary to your prediction john that Nog would out strike TIM)until the end. Fedor and Cro Cop was a fight that went to the decision and GG OWNED CC in ALL areas of the fight and Randy Beat GG. Nog and Fedor are better at submisions, Randy is better at MMA. Comparing these common opponents is all we have to go on. Don’t go by numbers, because Randy lost a lot of his fights when he was just a WRESTLER (you should know that) and 1/2 of Fedor’s wins are against UTTER CANS (0-1 0-3 you get the picture). What are you going to say when Tim beats Fedor. Fedor can’t take NO WHERE NEAR the beating Nog took and still stay standing.
by Gord on Jul 5, 2008 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In All HOnesty, I would even Rank Barnett ahead of Couture! I cant see Couture beating:
Fedor
Nog
Barnett
and maybe even Arlovski
Gord: What r u going to say when Fedor gives Sylvia the beating of his life? I will be $500 richer so it will work out just fine for me!
First of all, Nog always comes from behind to win, so whats your point about the Sylvia fight? Last I checked Randy dominated a hurt Tim Sylvia, and couldnt even finish him. On the other hand, Nog took Sylvia’s best shots, and Sylvia looked to fight the best fight he has fought in since the 2nd fight with Arlovski, and NOG STILL FINISHED THE FIGHT!
IMO, Randy is an OK heavyweight, he is a much better lilght heavyweihgt!
by john on Jul 5, 2008 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My point is, Tim hits HARD, Tim steadilly tagged Nog, Nog can take what no other human can and still stay awake. Fedor won’t be able to take what Nog did so he’s getting KOed. Ya Fedor has sick subs and he could very well catch Tim, but Tim could just as easily catch Fedor with strikes. It’s not going to be an easy fight for either of them. To say Fedor will run through Tim like nothing and it is a guarranteed win is not a very realistic prediction.

I said almost the same card about 2 months ago and got flamed!
But I seriously think the UFC will put on a stacked NTE card to match this Affliction card.
by MoonUK on Jul 4, 2008 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Terrible. Why are people so desperate to immediately see rematches? And two of them? Why would one want to see Chuck vs. Wandy again this soon? Yes, it was a great fight, but the Chuck vs. Shogun idea is much better. There are so many possibilities at LHW we wait for and want. And why the desire to see Jardine-Alexander II? Jardine-Forrest II if anything.
While it would be fun to see BJ/GSP on the NYE show, that would put the LW belt on hold again for too long. The winner of Huerta/Florian isn’t gonna come back that quickly to have things time out for both match-ups.
Noguiera-Mir
Hughes-Serra
Chuck-Shogun (hope they don’t give chuck his rematch vs ’Page this quickly either)
BJ-Florian/Huerta

Exactly. That would be absolutely unreal. Even though BJ is world class on the ground with his tremendous flexibility I think GSP could gnp his way to a win. His athleticism, strength and wrestling (which is second to none) would have to get the nod from me. Crazy fight nonetheless.
by Adam on Jul 4, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This would be awesome…I’m not going to get into the back and forth about what each fighter has done in each fight and weaknesses and all. I can’t view the video at work. Did BJ outline a timeframe as to when this fight would take place?
by Shadyone33 on Jul 4, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He thought around New Years. However, I can’t believe that he wants to fight the winner of Florian/Huerta, unless it is just to stay fresh. Neither one of them deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as BJ. I do think that GSP would give BJ all the ground and pound he could eat but it would be an amazing fight.

Thanks for the info. I think it’ll be an incredible fight. I think that he’ll fight to keep fresh as well. Personally I didn’t like the situation that GSP was in where he fought in August and for a time he was waiting for the winner of Hughes/Serra. In my opinion even waiting until December was too long.

Does anyone else think this is a bit preemptive on BJ’s part? He has beat pulver and stevenson prior to the Sherk fight (which BJ looked great in don’t get me wrong, best cardio of his yet) but pulver/stevenson isnt exactly clearing out a weight class like silva has and LW is way more stacked than MW. I just don’t think BJ has the frame to bulk up like hendo or someone else of that build. I love to watch BJ fight, but if he goes up to fight GSP a second time, GSP will ragdoll his ass all over the cage.
by MMAsubb on Jul 4, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree totally. I don’t think he sould be talking about going up to MW after he cleans the LW and WW divisions, seeing how he LOST his LAST TWO fights at WW. Maybe win 2 in a row first, not LOSE 2 IN A ROW. GSP will knock him right back down to LW where he should stay. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see this fight, but BJ isn’t going anywhere past GSP.

Interesting fight… St.Pierre will wreck Penn though, 2nd round tko

Do you even know what overrated means. How in the hell can GSP be overrated. He fuc@en DESTROYED the ONLY 2 guys who ever beat him and he dominated 80% of his fights. It’s like he is undefeated. He has beaten EVERYONE HE HAS FOUGHT. What else can he do, short of getting a time machine and cleaning the Matt’s clocks the first time. Now BJ’s fans overrate him a bit, but he is still a great fighter and deserves to be rated as one of the best(just not above GSP untill he beats him).

out of shape BJ took an in-shape GSP to a split decision and sent him to the hospital. in-shape and newly dedicated BJ puts georgy boy away and finishes him, then sends him back to canada. BJ with both titles at the same time = priceless.
by bubba on Jul 4, 2008 4:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Keep dreaming. Why can’t BJ fans see the WHOLE picture. I noticed that BJ’s conditioning has improved ( at LW,although not proven he can keep it at WW ),but to say GSP was in shape that fight is rediculous. The eye poke GREATLY impaired his vision (which likely caused the broken nose) which GREATLY impaired his cardio. It doesn’t matter if BJ’s cardio is better. It will be NO WHERE NEAR GSP’s INSAIN cardio. GSP will gas BJ in 2 rounds now like he did Hughes and Serra. Some say GSP is afraid to strike now, I say he is smart, because he can take guys down and go FULL OUT for at least 2 rounds and NO ONE can handle that RIDDUM. When GSP takes BJ to the ground his gas tank will drain FAST!
by Gord on Jul 5, 2008 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bj has a tonne of good fighters for him at 155 you lost to GSP time to get over it you have business at 55 to deal with. Anderson Silvia may be moving up but he has to the most part cleaned out the division so Bj I say do the same thing first.
by Tim on Jul 4, 2008 4:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is absurd. Silva had to defend 4 times before being allowed to move up a class. Plus now he has to win a few at that class before a title shot. BJ just won the REAL belt from Sherk. I don’t care that hes a former champ, he has to climb the very crowded WW ladder after clearing out the LW division first. UFC hugs BJs nuts.
by EazyEismydad on Jul 4, 2008 5:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
A lot of people are forgetting the fact that BJ’s last two fights at 170 were losses (granted, they were losses to GSP and Hughes). If BJ wants a title shot at 170, he should win at least a couple fights against top contenders at 170 (like Alves, Kos, or Diego) before getting a title shot. (And the same should go for Alves, who was overweight in his win against Hughes.)

BJ/GSP has fight of the century written all over it. I know they’ve fought before and it was a good fight but Penn gassed like he did a lot back then so if he’s really into the cardio training like he says he is…then this would make it a totally different fight.
